MINI ROUNDUP: WANDA SYKES COMES OUT / KATT WILLIAMS MENTAL HEALTH IN QUESTION

Monday, November 17, 2008

More than a week after voters in California, Arizona and Florida passed ballot initiatives outlawing same-sex marriage, thousands of people across the country protested the bans in simultaneous rallies Saturday.

Joining in on the demonstrations was Comedian Wanda Sykes. She surprised the organizers of the gay rights rally in Las Vegas this weekend by coming out publicly as a lesbian for the first time. Peep the video above..

KATT WILLIAMS MENTAL HEALTH IN QUESTION

Speaking of Comedians, Katt Williams, 37, was reportedly taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation after visiting family members in Sumter, South Carolina on, Friday (Nov. 14), according to The Sumter Item. Before that, the actor and comedian had run-ins with both city and county law enforcement which stirred from a call to police early that morning.

Sumter Police say officers responded to a call in reference to suspicious behavior by Williams at a local hotel. Williams reportedly showed up to the hotel in a bathrobe with a towel wrapper around his head inquiring about a room. Williams later left after asking for directions which police made no arrest at that time due to no crime being broken.

Williams later appeared on the doorsteps of attorney Garryl Deas’s office around 9:00 AM who Williams sought to hire because he said police were quote “attempting to violate his rights.” Williams went on talking to the attorney until around 9:30 about his entertainment career and rumors that he had perished in a plane crash. At that time, the attorney had to leave for a court appearance, which Williams asked at that point, could he wait in the office til the attorney returned, which Deas said he could.

Deas later returned around 10:30 a.m. to find Williams still waiting, but now Williams’ behavior had changed. “His demeanor was a little troubled,” Deas said stating the actor seemed “disoriented.” This was the time when family or close friends showed up seeking to have the comedian committed, Deas said.

Continuining his eratic behavior, Deas says Williams began “speaking gibberish,” saying “that he doesn’t trust anyone anymore” and everyone has turned against him.

Williams was later transported to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

@ Judah eveything you said was ridiculous and thus further proving my point of the lack of tolerance and compassion people have for their fellow human. Who’s doing the burning and stoning? God? No, figuratively we are. We don’t live in a medieval society were people can burn and stone others in the name of God….thank God. But we are still “throwing stones” at people because they are different from us. How does God feel about that? You better be absolutely FREE of sin before you make that assessment.
Um prop 8 does more than “call attention the issue of gay marriage” it indeed ELIMINATES HOMOSEXUALS the RIGHT to marry…did you read the ballot?

And about ALL top entertainers and whatnot getting their status because of their sexual orientation…smh…that’s when i knew you were ridiculous. Where are you getting your info from? LOL

@montgomerypoet
“we would not be able to populate the world if everyone were gay let’s just be real”

…really? because being gay is contagious and EVERYONE will become gay if it is legal….let’s be real. That was stupid.

And as far as “oh then we’re gonna start allowing beastiality to happen…” Seriously people, do you think the animals can sign a consent form to be married? All homosexuals want is to be married. We are denying people that when there are far more crucial things to be concerned about.

War? Economy? Violence?
Noooo what’s important is that we stop people from getting married….smh

Romans 1:24-27

1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies among themselves.

1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

1:26 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged the natural sexual relations for unnatural ones,

1:27 and likewise the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed in their passions for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

i’m done with it….take from it what you will - i’m out

Im kinda on the fence about the the whole gay marriage thing.
I think that whether people choose to be gay or not, let them be. They are not hurting anyone by choosing to have relations with the same sex or anything. In that sense i feel, hey, why not let them get married too. But then people say that that destoys the “sanctity” of marriage. But alot of things have had their sanctity destroyed. Shoot, people have destroyed the sanctity of church and for alot of churches its all about making money, i mean, have you seen the houses that all these “preachers” live in? and the kind of cars they drive? Even heterosexual marriage doesn’t have its sanctity anymore. Divorce rates are off the roof, and people act like it aint no thing. Its not a big deal to anyone anymore, you can get married today and get divorced next week.
Anyhoo, at the same time, why do homosexuals care so much about marriage? Isn’t a civil union enough? I mean, you love the person and your gonna live with them no matter what, so why do you need marriage to make anything “official”, just move in together and live your lives, marriage is just an outward symbol, and really doesn’t even mean as much as people think. Point is, gay people won’t die if they don’t get married, they can still love each other as much as they want, regardless of whether or not they have metal bands on their fingers.

How are homosexuals are being denied the ability to love one another?

How is marriage a human right, and on that basis, what does marriage accomplish that a civil union doesn’t?

Was this public confession from Wanda NEW information? I mean c’mon! We all knew it just like we do bout Latifah! If they choose to keep it private, let that be what that is!

I’m concerned about Katt though. That’s my boy! My prayers go out to him because he’s at the prime of his career and it appears to be shattering before his eyes. AND, he has kids to worry about in the process!

@ #65 - directions??

Following an arduous 300 shows and an 18-month touring schedule that left him incredibly fatigued, Katt felt compelled to be with his family in an effort to deal with his stress. While doing so, he is under a doctor’s care.

As this is a private and personal matter, we hope the media will respect his family’s request for privacy.

with a civil union
-couples aren’t recognized as being married in another state, whereas married couples are throughout the country.
-american citizens cannot marry their non-american partners, and said partner cannot be a legal citizen, whereas with actual marriage, that is allowed.
-civil union couples do not received tax breaks, joint-tax returns, etc. that the gov’t fiscally supports in heterosexual couples. they do not receive family discounts or insurance breaks, whereas heterosexual couples do.
-if a partner is sick, the other partner is not allowed to make medical decisions or collect social security should their partner die, whereas heterosexual couples have that right.
-marriage is universal, civil unions are not.

and as far as human rights. i stand by that. if any HUMAN BEING wants to marry their loved one…why can’t they? they are being denied.

they are being denied to confirm their love through legal marriage. thus people are denying their desired act of love.

Why are black people so homophobic? Let’s ask this question: Who willingly would “decide” to be gay if they know the reprecussions? African Americans are always talking about equality, equality, equality…it needs to be equality for all people. Then all of sudden everyone’s a Christian when this topic comes up. Ridiculous!

Y’all need to calm down with those comments about being gay is a choice, and living a gay lifestyle is a choice. It’s NOT a choice, and a gay person living a “gay” lifestyle is just them giving themselves a chance to not conform to society, and to live how they wanna live. Straight people have that privilege to live their life without being discriminated against, so why can’t they?

Good 4 Wanda. Shame on ppl who believe in taking rights from others. It wasn’t too long ago that we were just second class citizens and didn’t have that many rights ourselves. I recall hearing some1 say “God hates the sin, not the sinner.” and if that’s the case, hate homosexuality all you want, but don’t deny the rights of the sinner. Peace:)

Oh and I feel bad for Kat. The minority communities were taught that only “Jesus” can help them. Well guess what… that’s a great security blanket but only YOU can take responsibility to get help and get better. God can give you that support BUT he can’t make you go to the PSYCHOLOGIST for the help needed.

I hope Kat sees this, thinks it over and decides to get help because it sound bi-polar or schizophrenic.

I’m so sick and tired of people using the “the Bible says it’s wrong” and “it’s against my religion” excuses because quite frankly there are a lot of things the Bible says are wrong and I’m sure you enjoy them a lot. Do you eat shrimp, mussels and scallops??? Well, in the Bible the third dietary law sates you can’t eat shelled fish. Ta-Dah! Should we stone you to death? I’m pretty sure it also says you should not wear clothes made out of different fabrics at the same time? Is that against your religion also? I guess god will punish you on your Judgement day. Don’t just pick out certain things you want to use to justify your intolerance and refer to the Bible as the law you live by. ***** hypocrites. One of the main lessons Jesus taught is also not to judge people, unless you’re oh-so-perfect. So please don’t insult people’s intelligence with dumb statements like that.

Honestly I think that Obama will propose that the idea of civil unions be updated to where gay couples can have the same basic human rights such as tax breaks and shared accounts, hospital visits and major choices, etc. I could’ve sworn I heard him say this. He said he believed that marriage is a sacred union between man and woman, but civil unions should allow more as basic human rights. So if he were to update this and give the same rights as human, will there next be a fight over the fact that the same word of “marriage” is not being shared?

Also you can’t knock people that live by their religions. That’s what religion was intended for. You live by your word. Do all people do it. No, each will be judged accordingly. There’s so many different religions that oppose homosexuality and many of them are in this country so you can’t just blame it on one religion and one culture. There are many people who voted for prop 8 that voted yes because they live their lives according to their word, not that you are inhuman. On the other hand there are people voting yes for other reasons.

You are not suppose to judge.

And to those who wanna say “don’t point out my sin when you commit sin too” you are so right, but don’t use someone else’s sin to justify yours. At the end of the day you go to your judgement day alone and review YOUR life not anyone else’s

WOW!! I am so shocked after reading all of these comments! I can’t believe people are saying that homosexuality is a choice!! If it is a choice why would people want to put themselves in the minority and suffer the criticism and backlash? I think homosexuals should be allowed to marry. put yourself in their shoes, if straight people couldn’t marry we would be protesting our asses off! And i know some people are going to comment that the bible says it’s wrong and etc but seriously open your minds!! If everyone still had the mindset that people had 100’s of years ago, humanity would not have advanced. Women would have less rights, black people would have less rights, divorce would be illegal, etc!! GET WITH THE TIMES!!

@ #86 DISGUSTED: Thanks for the info.Your first point doesn’t add up (a marriage would have to hold), unless civil unions aren’t federally observed. If your second and third points hold true, then gays are definitely discriminated against, and it is not right. But my impression is that civil unions account for your third and fourth points. I disagree with you on the notion of human right. If marriage was an (unconstrained) human right, people like R Kelly would have a field day. I see the marriage issue as night and day.You want to enter an institution, but you don’t meet the definition of that institution. It’s as silly as gays that attend church adamantly to worship with a book that condemns them. Do they believe they are incorrigible sinners (which would make sense) or that their god is a liar (which wouldn’t)?

Comparing the plight of homosexuals to what blacks have, and continue to suffer is laughable at best. A white homosexual can easily be the governor of New Jersey, or host a popular TV show. Blacks are discriminated against by institution and legacy. My point is that if you are black, you face the wrath of discrimination the moment you draw your first breadth. Before you even know the meaning of “choice.” Your unborn children will have a burden to cash soon as they get here by virtue of having a black lineage — regardless of their orientation.

Onto Wanda. How can she claim to be a choiceless lesbian with any credulity if she was married to a man? Pure ridiculous. Either it was a choice, or she is not a lesbian.

IMHO, homosexuality is a sexual aberration. Just like nymphomania, pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, etc. However, it is perfectly legal when enacted by two consenting adult citizens. What I don’t get is why a gay person who intrinsically self-selects out of the procreation process (if indeed it’s not by choice) would want to adopt a kid when a strong provision for adoption is that the children be raised in a stable environment; at least one that approximates social normalcy.

Finally, people (including the bible thumpers) need to quit foaming at the mouth. No one can make a rational argument with a skewed ideology. One would have to subscribe to your belief system for your opinion to be remotely valid. Also, this isn’t purely a question of homophobia. If one reads the nuanced bill, they would realize that one can be homophobic and vote against Prop 8, and vice-versa.

If you think some people are not born gay, you people are sadly misinformed. As a nurse, I have seen many patients who were born with both organs and have the doctor choose the sex for them at birth. Just because a person has female organs does not mean that person is a female on the gentic level. For goodness sakes, people are born with genetic birth defects every second. Does anyone honestly believe that genetic abnormalities causing complex chemical imbalances like schizophrenia, sociopathic disorders and confusion about sex identity does not occur. Logical conclusion, many mistakes happen at bith, why would this not be one of the many. Lets not conclude that people are not born that way, because some are. Does that change the argument.

You know, marriage everywhere has a religious basis. Most, if not all, requires that it is for one man and one woman and do not condone homosexuality. You would think gays would not want to be associated with anything with a religious basis. Don’t bring up that crap about blacks because the Bible does not say that blacks are sin and all slaves were not black! But it does say homosexuality and the infeminate are sin and that man that lie with man and woman with woman is an abomination against his word and how we were created. Gays are are trying to force their lifestyles on people to accept it as natural. There is nothing natural about having sex with intestines and rectums!!! There I said it and there it is!Need to stop sugar coating it and call it what it is. Gays want special treatment for their sin. Why is it okay for gays to get health benefits for their “partners” and straight people can’t insure their boyfriends/girlfriends. Gays want to be rewarded for their choices to have immoral sex. Don’t care what you say, how you try to tweak it, and rationalize it, it is a choice. It is a choice to act on that lust. Just like it is a choice to lie, steal, molest, gossip, commit adultery, murder, and any other sin. You can deny the Bible all you want but open your eyes and you will see prophecies that were told in the Bible that has and is coming true!! We will all answer to a God that told you it was wrong, and the Supreme court, you mommy and daddy, your protestors, your “partner” will not be able to help you because they will have to answer for themselves. We all have to turn away from our sins and believe on what God did on the cross and believe his word and we will be saved. I really believe the problem lies with condoning other sins like adultery and fornication as normal, like in Hollywood, teenage pregnancy and abortion as okay. When you start tearing away at morals in any form, you open the floodgates for all of it to move to center stage and there are consequences to all of it. We are tearing away at the legal age limit for consensual sex with the advent of teacher/child relationships that recieve a slap on the risk, and not to mention R Kelly and his bull. We have accepted child sexualization in clothing and shoes and other areas that were once sacred ground. Trust that the polygamist are coming next, there are already talks of a reality show and rumors of Akon being a polygamist. Beastiality will be next and every other person who will ride on the coat tails of gays to force society to accept their immoral choices.

Mind your own house. If gays want to marry, fuck it let them be miserable with the rest of the married couples of the country, its a tax credit yaw, let’s not get it twisted. Married couples have a higher standard deduction than single, and even HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD. If they want to adopt, hell, let them adopt. You would rather kids stay in foster care or in otherwise unhealthy environments when there are healthy, economically, psychologically stable adults who happen to be gay who can offer a good home and love ready and willing to do so for these children.
