NEWS: AIDS Activists Rally In Front Of White House
Friday, November 21, 2008

A man wears a hat inscribed with the word ‘hope’ with the Barack Obama presidential campaign’s trademark logo of the rising sun as about 1,000 people from cities such as New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, gather to challenge President-elect Barack Obama to put an end to the AIDS epidemic in the United States and around the world at a rally in McPhearson Square on Thursday in Washington, DC.
The demonstrators marched to the White House and called on Obama to help people living with HIV and AIDS gain access to affordable housing, Medicare and Medicaid, and to increase funding for needle exchange and other prevention programs.

So if you catch HIV from probably being slutty and dirty, sleeping with random ass people and using random ass dirty needles… You expect cheaper housing cause you were out doing wrong and got sick from it? Getting the medication you need to take care of yourself is WHAT should be the issue and most all states even have their own programs to assist with that… I don’t think it’s the governments responsibility to GIVE you CHEAP housing cause you want it? Take your pills, eat right and then go get a job… While their out there protesting they need to be filling out applications…
That’s foolish!

This is a sad case when u have to resort to march to dc to talk about aids. And for those out there, an innocent individual can get aids such as babies born with it, a wife who was monogamous, rape victims and so and so. A cure could of been found by now. Let’s use this as an opportunity to get the economy boosted again.

The biggest challenge to stopping the AIDS Epidemic is individual behavior. I know not everybody gets it that way but I am not talking about the exception, I am talking about the rule. As stated, needle exchange is behavioral. Alot of the activities, voluntary unprotected sex, drug abuse( sharing needles), promiscuity, choosing not to get tested( can do that at the health dept., doctors office, order kits, etc), high risk sex acts, and any other activity that spreads disease whether that be syphyllis, gonorrhea, hepatitis, etc. its transmitted the same way because its blood and body fluids. My point is that as long as you have other venereal diseases and abortions( abortions means unprotected sex), you will have HIV/AIDS. The key factor is personal responsibility and behavioral change. Innocent people like unsuspecting spouses/partners and a small percentage of blood transfusion recipients and children have had to suffer consequences of this disease as well as other STDs. Not only do you have to fund a needle exchange program but also a community awareness and motivational education to change attitudes and behaviors. You can hand out condoms but people have to use them each time, not here and there and get tested not only for youself, but for others around you. I mean just think about a man that has multiple baby mommas. This means there is multiple unprotected sex going on, the same sex that puts all those people involved, children and all, at risk for STD, including HIV/AIDS transmission. If you notice, there has been a shift compared to back in the day when multiple baby mommas from the same guy was prevalent. What changed that? Child support laws that motivated some to stop the behavior of recklessly spreading sperm around. In a hyper sex society where anything goes, it will become more difficult. Now, its normal for middle schoolers to date and have sex because of attitude change/shift that said it was nothing wrong with it. (Attitude motivates behavior). Kids dressing provocatively and early dating will have consequences of increased sex added to the pool, not to mention adults that illegally leap into the pool. This needs to be deterred ASAP. If adults can’t get it together, then what are we expecting for these kids?!

question.. Yes! I voted for Obama to make many changes in the country, and restore our rapport with other nations..But is it me, or does everyone and their mother think that Obama is gonna have time to reconstruction every aspect of out lives.
God helps those who help themselves!
Everyone is looking for ‘change’, and it will happen, but be realistic, we all can’t get what we want.. Obama is probably looking at this and telling his advisers to write that issue down, and we can get to it after the Economy, Education and Troop Withdrawal..

Statistics are not always acurate. A sample of 100 in one area does not speak for 14 million people. White folks don’t go 2 clinics, they go 2 doctors and therefore doctors have 2 honor patient doctor privacy when it comes to medical conditions.

I feel Obama and his “change” message…is going to make him have a harder time in office than anyone else. Everyone knows the President can do everything they promise…it just can’t happen…Obama is only there four 4 years…and for people to be looking for everything thing in America to be “A Glorious New Day” is just crazy. I see a lot of upset people 4 years from now…crying “He didn’t keep his promise!”

Lord have mercy, the man isn’t even in office yet, and people are demanding that he fix the world. It isn’t going to happen. He’s not God. The HIV/AIDS epidemic can be halted when people change their behavior (someone up top said it correctly). Obama can’t do anything about that. It’s about personal responsibility.

I totally agree with most of people’s responses on this board. After reading about the March in DC, my initial thoughts were “he’s not in office yet”, “how the heck people expect him to solve the AIDs epidemic when he is facing an uphill battle with the economy, troop withdrawal of Iraq war and oil dependency”, and “unrealistic expectations for him to solve every problems in the US when as Bill Cosby stated it starts with the family and/or the individual”. People change is coming but not everything can be solved in four years. We have to change our own lives, not hoping the government can change our lives for us.

I still don’t understand what “paying for their housing” will do to stop AIDS. AIDS did not come out from the blue. Things had to be done to pass it along and everyone on this post so far has been saying key things. I never understand why married couples think that just because you are legally married, it means that you never have to get tested. In my personal opinion people that are infected with AIDS should not have children, they should adopt. I’m not trying to be mean, but it just seems selfish to have a child that has a strong possibility of being born with the disease. My heart sincerely goes out to those who were born with it because they didn’t ask for it or were the least bit careless to catch it. The thing is there are many programs out there because I taught a program in highschool. Problem is people don’t show up so those programs are deemed unsucessful so they receive less funding.

Some people on this board are incredibly ignorant!
There not asking Obama to stop aids, there asking him to increase funding for the millions of people in this country living with AIDS, who, because of they’re condition, need special assistance. There also asking for increase funding for AIDS prevention. If we can go do that in other countries, we certainly can do that right here!
And considering HIV and AIDS has devastated the black community and black people voted for Obama at like 90%+, it shouldn’t be surprising that black people, in addition to other people have demands. If white women were dying at the rates black women are from AIDS, I would asure you that this would have been a key campaign issue. It’s not a lot to as the President to devote some much needed resources to a national epidemic.
If you think that it’s okay to just vote for Obama and not ask anything of him once he’s elected then your sadly mistaken. We have to make demands of Obama, just like everyone else. Black people will miss a great opportunity if we just sit back for for years, while the rest of the country demands what they want. I supported Obama, I campaign for him for a full year, knocking on doors in multiple states. But I have enough sense to know that the campaign is over, now it’s time for use as voters to do what every other group of people does in this country - MAKE DEMANDS.

# 17 hit it right on the head. i was disgusted reading this. why are so many black folks expecting obama to swoop down with a big black cape and fix all of the black community’s issues just b/c he’s a man of color? how ignorant! finding a cure would be great. learning more about this disease would be progressive…just as with any other life threatening disease such a breast cancer. but the difference is breast cancer is not avoidable. AIDS is 100% avoidable. yes, there are rape victims and spouses who cheat….but outside of being raped, you STILL have a responsibility to take care of your health. i am married and i STILL get tested. trust yourself…and be responsible!

Wow people really.
While we are at it lets ask him to cure cancer, build a giant room so that we can legalize drugs and people can do their drugs in peace. HOW about a free snow cone everyday for everyone. Lets spead the love.
Leave Obama alone, he is going to have a hard enough time trying to make that tax plan work.
Be real people AIDS is a community program. We as a people need to teach our young girls and boys about condoms and being with one person. The Importance of waiting for the right persons.
Dont you all see we are responisble for this. We running around here praising all of P Diddy’s babymammas, taking advice for Don Magic, superhead writing books. This is were the spead of Aids comes from. Let march on that. Lets march on low self esteem and drug dealers. I understand they are acking for a plan close to what New York has, but I dont think it is working. Lets not go globlal with a plan that is not proven.
I know its asking a lot to look out side yourelf and say hey what can I do to help prevent this.
Just a question, Why march on Washington when Obama lives in Chicago. Somebody for got to tell those folks that Obama is not inharge until 20 January. Bless they heart.

Epitome of ignorance - there would be nothing to FIX if people could understand the power of prevention, protection and avoidance. To me this is a self inflicting disease, and for the most part preventable. Leave the drugs and risky behavior alone - and watch the problem mend itself. The same energy put into angry marches should be the same energy with which a person should uphold certain standards in their life so as to avoid this and other diseases. Of course there are those that have not “asked” for the situation they may find themselves in, such as children infected through birth, others infected by transfusion, however for those who ignore the fact that there exist consequences to certain actions, and then demand someone else to provide the remedy - give me a break. I don’t understand.

People are setting themselves up for disappointment with their unrealistic expectations, and setting President - ELECT Obama up for failure in their eyes.
If they marched on the White House, they should have been expressing their concerns to President Bush. He still has about 2 months left.

I completely agree with all those who state that Obama cannot put an end to the AIDS epidemic b/c he cannot stop personal behavior. It’s so true that the man doesn’t even live in the White House yet, but everyone wants him to start his job. Are we aware that President BUSH is still the current president. Folks need to be easy and wait for January 20th. The AIDS epidemic is horrible, especially the fact that it is hitting the Black/minority community so hard. However, we as a people need to be responsible. Take every precaution that you can to protect yourself, and get tested. One man can’t make you become responsible for doing right to take care of yourself.

How can he put an end to the “epidemic?” I mean, I know he’s been called the Messiah but the man cannot wave a magic wand and alleviate all the ills of the world. The only cure to this epidemic is through education and awareness. Obama is not God, he cannot be omnipresent in everyone’s lives to pull a guy off a chick and slap a condom on his dick. He cannot go into the alleys and the crack houses and pull the needles out of the arms of the addicts. Even though I am aware of certain instances in Africa where women are raped by guys who are infected with the disease, but Obama can only continue to fund the AIDS programs and hopefully come up with a cure for the disease. The first law of nature is self preservation, so people need to stop deferring to other people to help them in cases when only they can help themselves.

I don’t want to hear none of this “unrealistic expectation” b.s. from black people now that their god was elected and he will have to back up his propaganda. I can’t wait until we get knee deep into this and people’s real feelings start to emerge. That’s when idiots will be forced to recede into the background. His emblem is the “rising sun” because he is an adherent to the the worship of the sun god like all people in America; and the world for that matter, are, that being Osiris, Zeus, Baal, Molech, etc. Whatever name you want to call him. When those of our people that celebrate Christmas a little over a month from now celebrate it, it will be in honor of the re-emergence of the sun after the winter solstice on Dec. 21. The emblem has nothing to do with “hope”, other than the “hope” that Satan gives the American people that they can continue to lie to themselves.

Y’all need to show some compassion! And, you know who I’m talking about. Everyone should be allowed to have hope and ask for whatever their dire heart desires. It’s called hope! Not demand or threat! The gay people are asking for the right to call themselves married, but all they can do is hope. Obama will hear their cry and do what he can. Many of those infected with AIDS are gay! The disease has distroyed their bodies, but not their minds and souls. There is a way to care for the sick and destitude.
When the diciples asked Christ to send the mulitude away, He had compassion on them and told the diciples to bring Him the 3 fish and 5 loaves. Those diciples went from being advisors to becoming waiters for 5000 people! That’s the miracle of HOPE! You don’t put limits on anothers mans faith. If they believe the government can help, God can move mountains.
Have compassion on these poor soul! And remember…”cept for the grace of God, there go…who?” You know it! It’s time to step outside of the box and say, YES WE CAN! Here’s the deal: We need to have faith that God will bless our nation, now that we have a leader of faith. Naw, naw, naw, not God damn America…GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Can youl see what drives him? He has the opposite of hope and faith! He has fear! His obsession relies on destruction and doom! Never an encouraging word!

As long as we keep treating AIDS as a “victim” disease, people will continue to act irresponsibly and spread it and pass it along to innocent victims like children.
Sorry, but HIV/AIDS is not a disease that afflicts people arbitrarily. You have to put yourself in the position to receive the virus, period.
It is not fair for taxpayers to have to now subsidize your LIFE because you made irresponsible decisions. And please, the majority of black women with HIV/AIDS did not catch it from their DL husbands, as so many of you like to believe. It is because they continue to sleep with men who are high-risk (ex offenders) and do not have enough self-esteem to insist their partners use condoms.
As for the IV drug users- GTFOH with this clean needle program. Why should I pay for you to get high responsibly?
Ugh, I am so sick of these moochers. I feel genuine compassion for folks but please do not DEMAND that you be given anything. Be happy you live in America where you have access to programs and research. Be happy that you are still alive to march at all. Lol, you always meet the demand when it comes to filling the effeminate n*gger demographic. My encouragement is for the Word of the Lord to come to fruition through his Christ and the resurrection of my people from this worm-like state, not the continuance of caucasian domination over the other nations of the earth and what comes with that. “Prophecies” are in the scripture due to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they don’t come from men and I’ve never prophesied on “elections” that don’t exist. I said that Hillary would become president. If they put this dude forth and pitted him against an 80 year old devil and a bimbo from Alaska that can’t put two sentences together and you negroes still couldn’t get a black president, you all would’ve killed yourselves. Now, you must believe that I’m a prophet because you keep making that statement of “prophesy”, lol. What I said concerning Christmas is history, not prophecy. As for all the black church, hair slicked back, cheap suit negro nonsense, keep it to yourself please. You don’t know who the saints are, nor what the Lord has promised them. Their is no redemption for America, nor what it has done to our people and the other races. Any black person that thinks that the Lord will “bless America” is dealing with Satan because that is the god of America. This is why you are now behind Obama’s stance on hom*sexual “civil unions” when you projected yourself as staunchly against hom*sexuality (allegedly) in the past (Luke 6:39).
As usual in the black community, the inmates run the damn asylum. America is on the brink of collapse, there is no salvation for what is occurring and idiots like yourself will be forced to bite your tongue as this thing progresses because you will have to concede a series of actualities as these “dreams” are washed away by reality. All you weak black men that cheer for Obama so that you can agree with the black woman will see how things progress when you predicate your outlook based on emotionalism. It’s gonna be one “Obama is not a miracle worker!!! Give him a break!!!” after another as his b.s. gets exposed. Even the damn Arabs called him out as a “house negro”, lol. If CL made a post on that, I must’ve missed it. America is 10 trillion dollars in debt and the dollar is about to be done away with. The 700 billion dollar stimulus package is akin to giving a dying man morphine, not a cure, because it will cause drastic inflation of a paper money system that already is in shambles. The auto industry is finished. All Obama can do and must do is serve the will of the state of Israel and start more wars. They want to do all these things on Obama’s watch so the stipulation can be made that it is all the negro’s fault.

Then you claimed that I couldn’t handle a twelve year old version of you because you were mentally and spiritually molested by the church system that your mother subjected you to? You had no response to the information I brought out concerning the “religion” that perverted your soul, and obviously still reverberates to this very day based on your idiocy. This is why I can’t take you dudes seriously. You can’t explain anything in a scholarly manner. Everything is emotion. Don’t worry about whether or not I have children. It’s effeminate for a man to be concerned about another man’s personal business. Worry about your child. If blacks did that, they wouldn’t need Obama to raise their children for them. One last thing as well. The KKK at it’s highest levels, as it is nothing but masonry and satanism, has adherents in all branches of the government and many presidents i.e. Woodrow Wilson, were and are members. A dumb negro like yourself doesn’t know the half, so don’t spew b.s. please. Brother I know you have alot invested in this economy, as a hedge fund analyst if I remember correctly, but it’s finished. Trust me. Black people will be forced to do what they should’ve been doing all along, which is drop the light-skinned versus dark-skinned, crip vs. blood, man vs. woman nonsense and stand together.

#55 Judah… two days in a row I agree with your points below not that it matters lol….. I don’t think people know that this is why each President meets the Pope it’s more then a blessing they are getting and that this country is run by FreeMasons… Approximately 2 of every 3 U. S. Presidents are Known as being Freemasons or to be Closely Associated with Freemasonry.

…I’m confused. How does anyone expect one person to end this crisis? Doesn’t it
…start with the people that are engaging in unsafe sexual behavior? I get
…the point of the rally but this is not a White House issue first and foremost. It’s
…an individual issue to start with. Everything cannot be solved by the government.
…Sometimes people need to handle their own business and take responsibility for
…their own actions. Before we even get to the point where we need the gov’t to
…step in an take action people should be making better choices. Not saying that
—everyone who has AIDS got it from unsafe sex, nor am I saying they don’t
…deserve hlep. But folks are always acting like even though the gov’t didn’t create
…a “personal” problem, they’re supposed to fix it. This is why all of the high
…expectations folks have for Obama will not come to pass. Also, why not call on
…Bush? His ass is still the President. Let’s not forget that.

Obama isn’t God!!! This country won’t turn around in a few months, stop expecting too much and stop expecting the impossible!! Then when he can’t do anything about it, people will say he has failed as a president, well, people are failing by overexpecting shit.

The Pope is the Master Witch. All world leaders MUST bow down to this man as you already know. The people make me laugh honestly. The Pope is the alleged just the leader of the Catholic religion. There is no other leader of any other religion on earth that is viewed and greeted with such official esteem as this man worldwide. This is because he is the leader of the world and he speaks directly to Satan. The world leaders view him as their “spiritual advisor”. Now, his headquarters, the Vatican, is an official “city-state” thathas it’s own flag, currency etc. This is because it is the capital of the world, spiritually speaking, as London is the financial capital and Washington D.C. is the military capital. They are all city-states. It’s a whole other topic that goes into the scriptures and history so that can be for another time.

What do they expect Obama, who’s not even president yet, to do about The Aids epidemic, besides to help find a cure for it. It’s not the president’s fault when people are constantly having unprotected sex, sharing needles, and all of those other types of things. Those people really looked stupid for marching to the White House for Obama to change the Aids epidemic and he’s not even there yet.

Wow! Some of the comments on here are ridiculous! These people aren’t dumb. Of course they know Obama isn’t in office. Just like all rallies, they’re marching to gain attention from those who can make changes and for RECOGNITION! They’re not asking for him to make “aids disappear” as a lot of you so simply put it. They are making demands, which all citizens have a right to do! Aids is a huge problem in the black community. Just like Obama promised, they want to be sure that their voices are heard in advocating for CHANGE. Aids prevention programs, prices of medication, research for better treatments, and etc are all things that can help in decreasing the number of HIV/AIDS cases each year.
Though I’m not trying to promote the usage of drugs, if the safe needle exchange system helps in preventing this terrible disease from being spread to low self-esteem/promiscuous girls/boys, ignorant teens, married couples, gay, lesbians, whomever, then I am all for it!!!!

wow there is allot of ignorance in the comments….. I’m sure there are protesting to bring an awareness to an issue that is effecting allot of people in the black community, in fact allot of community just black folks more. just because you have tested doesn’t mean you don’t have HIV.
*** You Get HIV from having Unprotected Sex
and as you can see from the Maury show… etc that there all allot folk not even thinking about condoms…. it’s really sad.
HIV doesn’t have a look, and it can live your body for 10 years before you even show a symptom. so yes this disease needs to be stop.. those with it do need some help.
and stop making it like it’s their fault they contracted the virus … having unprotected sex is the it’s spread. let’s not be so judgemental , we (black folks) are the most effected by this disease, and allot of folks simply ignore it… one day we all will be extinct, because of ignorance.

The vast majority of people that replied to this thread have no idea what the current HIV/AIDS epidemic is and they have no idea the problems that are involved. Please educate yourselves, folks. Of course we (I was at the rally) do not expect Obama to end AIDS. This rally occurs annually. Typically we protest the President’s policies but this year we ignored the President (Bush) and looked towards the future President and supported him for the HIV/AIDS policies that he proposed. You misunderstood the point of the rally if you thought it was more than that. Obama will not be able to end AIDS but there are some key policies that can be changed or implemented that would significantly change the face of the epidemic. I’m talking about education, prevention, outreach programs. FACT: The majority of people spreading HIV, don’t know they have it. We need to reach out to these folks and get them treatment. This isn’t about who is right and worng. This is about reaching out to a sick, marginalized community and helping them.

See, brother, your mind is in a bag and the leaders of your cult take it where ever they want. One thing I must give you credit for is that you have a good memory. You remember my occupation and everything..lol. Brother, I do not know how many times I have to explain my position to you. This is your approach, you disregard everything I say and resort to trivialism. I am not for this country or for this government; what I stand for is a united Black front, from a Black nationalism stand point. A race of people is like an individual man; until it uses its own talent, takes pride in its own history, expresses its own culture, affirms its own selfhood, it can never fulfill itself. Me supporting Barack Obama is not about this presidency or any goverment office. This is about unity. Getting behind a Black man and elevating him high enough so the world can see (for what ever it is worth) that their perception of Black people, lacking intellect, leadership qualities and good family oriented values, were ill-conceived. You keep on saying I have no response to your questions. What questions?

I am from a county where African American women make up 75% of new AIDS/HIV cases. Most of the women where I’m from contract it through un-protected sex. I do not agree with giving people “affordable housing” for making bad decisions. I do agree with making healthcare and medcine affordable to them.
I wouldn’t feel so bad with having more prevention programs, but this is 2008 most people (including young adults) know how HIV/AIDS in contracted, they just don’t believe it can happen to them. I am torn with this topic because I know so many people living and who have died from these dieases, but I believe this is a perosnal issue and not and Obama issue. What do people expect him to do bust in on people having sex and say, are you using a condom? when is the last time you’ve been tested?, are you using a clean needle?

The thing that I find so frustrating is that these people are wasting time with rallies when they should DO something to further their cause. I agree with a lot of the comments about HIV/AIDS being an epidemic that flourishes because the vast majority of “victims” do not exhibit personal responsibility. However I cannot support the “victims” who only attend rallies and whine to try to get benefits for their condition. Instead of standing around like monkeys waving signs, create a proposal and an ACTUAL PLAN OF ACTION toward a solution. Then take it to the drug companies and get the sponsorship of your state senators/congressmen. It’s not fair to the American taxpayers to complain about an issue and beg for handouts but not put in the legwork to find the answer to your problem. It’s called Sweat Equity. God helps those who helps themselves. The election of President Obama should represent a motivating force to everyone who has an issue that they want him to tackle. Instead of stomping your feet in front of the White House, put on your thinking cap and brainstorm how you can get what you want. I guarantee that 90% of the time the solution will more effectively be found in the private sector and local communities NOT with the government.
@ #65: It’s funny - silly people who take part in rallies seem to hope that protests and ostentatious public displays will put a spotlight on their particular cause. However it often has the opposite effect. There tends to be a backlash AGAINST the issue (as indicated by the reponse on this forum). Just like the folks who are protesting the passing of Proposition 8 against gay marriage in California. It’s about as effective as campaigning for McCain now that the election is over. I suggest channeling your energy into an effective course of action. Good luck!

The people here waving signs represent over 100 organizations that helped organize and sponsor this rally. These organizations are mostly non-profits and they all actively work to creat policy change. This is an annual rally to bring awareness to the issues that we spend all year working with. If you think rallies are not effective, tell that to the Obama transition team that sent a representative to speak to the crowd. She announced that the team would be sitting down with representatives of the major organizations involved to help identify the major policy issues that can be changed. We have plans, we have ideas and we are voicing them and they will now be heard. This is why we do what we do.
