Say no more…….

Rock and roll has always been characterized by colorful characters, doing things like marrying their 13-year-old cousins or eating live bats onstage. And the people employed by Chess Records in the early 1950s, one of the first labels to bring black musicians to the mainstream, were as colorful as any. With Cadillac Records, writer-director Darnell Martin has done himself a key favor by hiring equally dynamic actors to play these early movers and shakers, from Jeffrey Wright’s laconic Muddy Waters to Mos Def’s twitchy, charming take on Chuck Berry. Martin’s serviceable direction and plodding story might have been saved by this cadre of talent had he not handed over a key role, and at least two full-fledged musical numbers, to one of the highest-paid bad actresses working today– one who also happens to have an executive producer credit.

Playing the troubled Etta James during a period of heavy addiction and depression, Beyoncé emotes and cries and seduces at all the right moments, but her character obscures what should have been the heart of the film. Muddy Waters, who was the first artist signed to Chess Records by his business partner and friend Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody), deserved to be the main character here, and you can’t help but feel the movie was driven off the rails by its biggest star.

What’s there before Beyoncé takes over is good, though serviceable and a bit amateurish in the way average biopics can be. Narrating from the present for no particular reason, Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer) tells how Waters, a sharecropper, left Mississippi for Chicago and teamed up with harmonica prodigy Little Walter (Columbus Short), a young man with an explosive temper and a penchant for anything that could get you in trouble. Chess moves from bar owner to record label impresario with Waters and Little Walter as his talent, and soon they’re making hits on black radio stations and even doing tours in the South. The movie’s title comes from Chess’s habit of buying his talent Cadillacs when they hit it big, as opposed to royalty checks. It’s one of Chess’s many shoddy business practices that doesn’t really amount to anything in Martin’s meandering script.

It’s not until Berry, with his duckwalking and country-western affectations, signs on to Chess that the label really blossoms, creating hits with white and black audiences alike. With fame comes its perils for pretty much everyone involved, including Waters’ multiple affairs behind the back of “his girl” (Gabrielle Union), Berry’s arrest and Little Walter’s multiple meltdowns. And that’s even before Etta James show up to tell Chess about her absent father, famed pool shark Minnesota Fats, and seduce him on the floor of her sad, empty house.

It’s hard to make the decadence-and-decline story of rock and roll feel new, and even though the figures in Cadillac Records are singing different songs, the tune is pretty much the same. The good parts mostly lie in the performances– Brody and Wright have an easy, sparring rapport, and Wright, Def and Short are all stellar in their vastly different roles. Including his endearing performance in this year’s Be Kind Rewind, Mos Def is becoming one of my favorite actors to simply spend time with onscreen. Wright, always good in smaller roles, would probably be getting all the attention here with his chameleonic performance, had a certain superstar not, quite literally, taken away the spotlight.

It’s unfair to blame all of Cadillac Records’ failings on Beyoncé, given the draggy pace of the script and the movie’s general unwillingness to deviate from general music biz stereotypes. But the movie might have retained its shaggy charm, and been able to make up for its many flaws, had it not morphed into yet another star turn for an actress who has yet to prove any real charisma onscreen.

Well I can say one thing about Bey, she hasn’t gone Hollywood and changed her teeth. They look healthy and natural. When your grill looks TOO PERFECT, they look fake as hell. Unlike so many other celebs rocking those huge horse-like porcelain veneers (Keyshia Cole, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Oprah, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Eddie Murphy, hell even Too Short jumped on the bandwagon) this chick kept that part of her “real”.

As for her reviews, when it was reported early on that her performance may be Oscar worthy it was based solely on her acting coach’s statement. Critics knew this, media outlets knew this but they were counting on the public’s being so swept up in the utter unbelievability of it all that it would never be questioned. So, while many were surprised, after seeing the film, that she didn’t perform horribly, it still amounts to little more than what is required of a real actress when she auditions for a role. It a sham, a campaign, orchestrated by Beyonce’s people… She will not win an Oscar…if she is even nominated, in fact, it will be to boost ratings. I knew the reviews would eventually turn realistic…and more of that is to come unless Papa Knowles can do a bit of “negotiating”…

bey is my girl and I think the movie will be fine. I think an Oscar may be pushing it because I haven’t seen much depth to her on screen yet. Actually JHud and Jaimee Foxx got lucky and won oscars because they both suck. JHud was so overrated I guess she wasn’t up against anybody for real. That’s a lie cause I liked Devil wears Prada Merryl Streep and errbody knows that she should have won. She was a one hit wonder. I sometimes wonder if Beyonce is envious of the fact that she got the oscar. Anywho, Beyonce sings better, looks better and is a real performer in every sense. perhaps with some lessons she will be the talent in competition for the oscar one day. Actually I was wrong about her nomination,it wasn’t the exact award but if this will be telltale as in those nominated were also nominated for Oscars, I’d predict she’s going to be one of the two or three who don’t make the “final ballot”…the other actresses are phenomenal. I think Penelope Cruz will win…I’ve been hearing about that performance for months.

To say Jamie was lucky youmust no nothing about Ray Charles, Jamie became his reflextion; voice, talent, manerism, and blindness! Even if Ray came natural to Jamie, the performance was on point.

Beyonce is just not an actor and nothing she does will ever change that.
She obviously wants to win an Oscar because she can then claim to be a rammy award winner and an Oscar winner, what’s next? BROADWAY, then she’ll want a Tony award as well. BUT, she is not qualified for those awards, and those awards should only go to actors who have turned out authentic performances on stage and on film. That in itself disqualifies Beyonce….

No one has to worry about bey ever getting an Oscar because black people do not win unless they do something that is truly outstanding, and sometimes that still doesn’t happen. JHUD won because she was an unknown who did not even have her own CD out, so no one really knew her, lets face it she lost on American Idol, so she was truly unmined talent and they could justify giving her that award on raw talent and a performance that launched her acting career. She was real and overshadowed Beyonce completely in that movie. You believed her.

Beyonce is trying to prove herself in this film because Jennifer Hudson blew her away in Dreamgirls with her singing AND acting. JHud got an OSCAR because she did BOTH superbly!! I can’t blame Beyonce for trying though. Even though she can sing, dance, is sexy, has almost every man sweat’n her, is a threat to the back-in-the-day hot female singers, i.e. Janet, Toni B., ect., and is married to one of the top hip-hop mongules of the decade—not being recognized, let alone not winning an Oscar for Dreamgirls, just done left old Bee gasping. Obviously with all she has to offer, losing that one thing was just like not having nothing at all. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I saw the look on Bee’s face when she wasn’t recognized for Dreamgirls and didn’t win the Oscar to an overweight, less attractive JHud. Bee is my girl, but she has to learn that all things were not added unto her. If she doesn’t, she will become Diana Ross’ed and you see how that has worked out for Ms. Ross.

That comment about bey being like diana ross is so true, but beyonce doesn’t believe the truth about herself. He earned respect but from the first time he acted in a tv show and in movies he showed he possessed an aptitude to be a good actor, beyonce has never shown such instinct as someone else mentioned in this topic.

I hope CL does a review of Britney’s CD. I think her CD may be good and it will be my first time buying her cd. I like the special on MTV about her. I think it’s sad that she is followed the way she is. I like how she is setting the record straight and being honest about what happened.

Well, she was nominated for the award Jennifer was before her long string of wins and eventual Oscar triumph so maybe she will be nominated. I’ve read there’s nothing to get too excited about this year in the supporting actress category so maybe she will be nominated. But to say she’ll win is to say the Oscars won’t get enough of their buzz factor from nominating, posthumously, Heath Ledger. Unless, of course, they opt to drag Beyonce to the winner’s circle. Weaving together the life stories of some of America’s musical legends, the director Darnell Martin chronicles the rise and fall of Chess Records, the great Chicago blues label of the fifties and sixties. Adrien Brody stars in the vague and underwritten role of the company’s co-founder, Leonard Chess. His climactic scenes with Beyoncé Knowles (who plays the troubled singer Etta James) are unconvincing and overly dramatic. But, before it all unravels, the movie highlights inspired performances that bring to life the soulful—and undisciplined—ways of some of the greatest bluesmen and early rockers. With Jeffrey Wright, who is brilliantly seductive as Muddy Waters; Columbus Short, as Little Walter; Cedric the Entertainer, as the songwriter Willie Dixon; a joyous Mos Def as Chuck Berry; and, in a small but unforgettable performance, Eamonn Walker, as Howlin’ Wolf.

I think from this small clip she did good. I would have to see the whole movie to say if she did bad or not. Some of this people judge without seeing anything. I think she came a long way from austin power’s cause MAN the acting is bad in that. I think she did good in Dream girls. Better than JHud….I personaly don’t think J-hud can act. ^^Well, Halle Berry claimed she wanted a Grammy after she won the Oscar. I didn’t see anyone jumping down her throat about that. Jennifer Hudson won one on her first try. I didn’t see anyone up in arms over her winning one before the likes of Angela Bassett or Will Smith. IMO, Jennifer didn’t deserve her award. Her performance was good but not great. Besides had she not been in the Supporting Actress category (when she was clearly the star and lead actress), she would have definitely loss to Helen Mirren. Thus, marketing Beyonce as the star of the film benefitted Jennifer.

There is nothing wrong with Beyonce being ambitious. How long ago was it exactly that she said she wanted to win an Oscar before 30? She has stated many times that she believes she still has a long way to go. She has done everything in music. Why not try acting? I don’t see anyone downing Alicia Keys for trying her hand at acting.

I hope Beyonce continues to act and improve just to prove all her naysayers wrong. Some people are sad to want this girl to give up her dreams. Here is a suggestion: If you don’t like her acting, don’t watch it, don’t support it. It’s just that simple.

And Beyonce’s album actually sold 482,000 not 241,000 like someone claimed. Each double disc counted as 1. It doesn’t satisfy the qualifications of a standard double disc. SMH. Anything to bring this chick down. Sad.

Bey did a good job, but I think Jill Scott would have blown the heck out that song. I think Jill Scott would have emulated Etta with more soul, more heart and feelings. Everyone was not meant to act. This is a talent that Beyonce just doesnt have right now. You’ve got to have heart. It seems to me that she’s pushing to do it all, but everyone has limits….We’re only human.

First of all, Beyonce and her dad are Executive Producers of the movie which means she wasn’t cast for the part, they paid for her to be the lead role of this movie. Second of all, all she has do do was think of Jennifer winning the Oscar and the tears just flowed. Third of all, they have enough money to pay for all the great review they want.

Wow. It is amazing to read all of the hateful remarks on this site. A site that is meant for black entertainment at that. It is just crazy to me how we tear our own down like this. We even have people wishing the best for Angelina, naming Meryl, and other white actresses, simply to down Beyonce. That’s just crazy, because you don’t see this anywhere else. Regardless if you like Beyonce’s singing or not…though I believe she did WONDERFUL in this clip, it is a shame the way you tear her down so. Believe it or not, singing and voice interpretation is a major part of acting, and conveying a message, so for her to powerfully portray Etta songs is a big deal, just ask any musical theatre major, or critic. Instead of giving a black woman praise for realizing her Dreams, and setting major goals for herself, you laugh at her and tear her down. You go and find the worst reviews possible (ignoring all of the positive ones, that are in great number), just to say “I told you so Beyonce”. I would hate to see how you are in real life towards friends, because this is DISGUSTING. She is blessed to be able to realize her dreams, and to pursue acting because this truly comes from her heart, regardless if you want to see the movie. Imagine if this were you up here and someone were tearing you down, and ripping you to pieces, without even seeing your whole interpretation of the role, ignoring the positive about you, and WAITING for your downfall. It wouldn’t be that funny then.

All of Beyonce’s costars have PRAISED her work. It’s a shame that instead of uplifting our own, we continue to tear them down. Instead lifting up other races because it’s meant for them to be that high. It’s meant for them to get Oscars even as little kids…because that’s who it’s for. How is it laughable that Beyonce would want one by 30, even when the youngest in Hollywood was barely a preteen when they won an Oscar. Why is it funny when there have been white actresses to win Supporting nods being in a movie less than ten minutes? But it’s funny when someone who is a black singer wants to realize their dreams and put hardwork into a role. It’s funny that they would love to be rewarded for their work?? Also take note of this. Some of you are talking about how Beyonce took roles from black actresses and is doing a disservice to those in Hollywood. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? You can’t be. Yes Beyonce Executive Produced the movie, which is a big deal. The producers of the movie FINANCE the film, allowing the story to be made, because of the huge financial undertaking of creating a Hollywood film. Beyonce made way for so many black actors and actresses to take part in this film, along with other producers. Also there is a BLACK DIRECTOR Darnell Martin, who is making this film. This give a black director spotlight, in a Hollywood that is ruled by WHITE MALE directors. This is amazing for a black woman to be able to direct a movie of this large magnitude. Not only that white folk have been financing their own movies, helping out there daughters, sons, mothers for years, but when black people finance movies, and help out other blacks it’s a major problem. Because it’s Beyonce. Other major stars have produced their movies as well. Including the Angelinas, Brads, and Meryls. Without producing the movie can’t be made.

The movie Cadillac Records is a great way to show the historic nature of Chess Records and what it meant to the music industry as a whole. A lot of people don’t know about this story, and the fact that all of these wonderful actors and actresses are able to showcase their talents is an amazing thing. People get mad at Beyonce, but then it’s ok for Gabrielle Union to be in dozens of movies that you claim other black actresses could have, even when she had no formal training in acting before starting, just as Beyonce. I don’t hear you up here complaining about how the Brads and Angelina’s garner a lot of major movie roles, but Suzie Q from Julliard can’t break into a major role. It’s about star power either way, so why hate on Beyonce for being able to get cast in a movie, by working hard and proving she should be there. Why hate on our own? But I can’t hate on her or other actors, because they are doing what they love to do, in order to make their way in this world. I applaud the Beyonce’s, Gabby’s, and Darnell Martin’s of this world, for realizing their dreams, and portraying blacks, positively in Hollywood. The more we support us, and movies like these we will continue to see more black films in Hollywood greenlighted. Without support these stories will be left untold.

I hope I added logic in this thread, because in the midst of hating, others clearly have forgotten the historic nature of this film. God Bless Beyonce, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Columbus Short, Adrian Brody, Mos Def, Darnell Martin, and the hundreds of others who were able to work on this movie, make bread for themselves and their families, and who were able to realize their dreams.
