I really love her simple. Like you said, less is more. When you have it together, you really don’t need all that extra extra. It’s nice for what it’s for, but when she’s natural like this, I really dig that.

Honestly based off of this clip I think her acting skills have improved. Granted it’s a known fact that she is not a good actor but I give credit when its due.

Regarding the song in the clip I think that she did a good job. Could someone else have given a better or more soulful rendention? Of course. But from a marketing standpoint it makes sense to have her in this role. Etta James was in fact a singer so why not just use a short wig to have Beyonce look the part.

With Jeffrfey Wright and Gabrielle Unioin acting in it…… I think that over all this movie will be nice and I plan on going to see it.

I dont think their was much acting in this clip, just singing and we already know she can do that. She gave emotion while singing in the clip though, so I guess thats a plus!

From the clip it looks like Etta and Leonard Chess had some kind of relationship.

The movie looks really interesting and im excited to hear the music!

Wow, I’m actually proud of her. Can’t wait to see the movie. I’m not going to lie though, it seems like dream girls part II. But I believe I can still enjoy it. I’m not going to call her an actress until she does good in a film that doesn’t require her singing.

Well it doesn’t really showcase her acting ability, we all know Bey can sing so Iam sure what the question is really asking. I am going to see this movie, but in amm honesty her last album I am Sasha Fierce was the worst of the three. I think Bey needs to rethink and retool but the Beyoncites will buy and defend to the end so be it. I love her previous work and look forward to another great African American dominated-cast film, its been a good year for black cast films.

I really wish Faith Evans would have gotten this role. Even in the stills Beyonce looks like Faith more than Etta James. I know Faith isn’t the best attress either, but on the strength that her life is soo similar to Etta James I know she could of killed it! Addictions, bad husbands and all. Faith Evans even looks like Etta to me. Oh well, Beyonce can sing…..I just dont think she was giving me a stellar Acting performance. Something about her just never seems natural on screen. She can give you emotion, buts its always constipated emotion. Plus her timing is always off

This movie is nothing like Dreamgirls. It’s about the start of Rock n’ Roll. Bey has just a small part in the movie, in the 2nd hour. Bey was the correct choice for Etta for the look and for the persona. Personally I thought Bey was a great choice for the role. I think she’s a good actress. I don’t see why people think otherwise but everyone is entitled to their opinion. People said Barbara Streisand couldn’t act and she should only sing, and she’s an ICON. I guess Bey is on her way!

Great clip. I think Bey should fire her stylist Ty. I love Bey but I could dress Bey way better than what he is doing. But I think her loyalty to him (I think he’s her cousin) prevents her from doing just that. I like her over the top & sexy.

Bey sang that song, yes she did!!!, so much so that it made me you tube Etta James music and now I am on a mission to find some cds by Etta James, the woman was genius. I had forgotten how good her music is. I remember when Mommy would play some of her music, it stirred up memories, but I was’nt old enough to appreciate the raw talent nor grasp the meaning of the songs of Ms Etta James.

HOW CAN YALL JUDGE HER ACTING SKILLS ONLY 30 SECONDS. YOU KNOW I NEVER DEFENDER HER IN THE ACTING BUT SHE WAS GREAT. SHE HAS BEEN GETTING RAVING REVIEWS AND EVERYONE I TALKED TO AT THE AFTER PARTY WAS TALKING ABOUT HER. AND AS FAR AS THE CLIP GOES SHE CAN ACT.

IN THE PICS SHE LOOKS GORGEOUS AND ANYWAY DREAMGIRLS HAS NOTINH ON THIS MOVE EXPECIALLY THE SCENE WHEN SHE WAS IN THE DINER IS THE HIGHTLIGHT OF THE MOVIE. DONT JUDGE GO SEE IT, READ THE REVIEWS

She did really good in that clip and of course she tore that song to pieces.
I’m eager to see a scene without singing though so I can really be able to judge her acting.

But, there has been a lot of critics stirring up some Oscar buzz.
And that’s a fact. *Google It*

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - “Cadillac Records” comes from Sony Music Film, so it’s no surprise that the project is more a soundtrack in search of a movie than a film about the pre-eminent blues record label of the ’50s and ’60s and the fabulous artists who passed through its Chicago recording studio.

Nevertheless, writer-director Darnell Martin has assembled a stellar cast to impersonate these artists both as characters and musicians. That starts with executive producer Beyonce Knowles, who performs dynamic versions of Etta James classics and delivers the dramatic goods as the troubled and badly addicted young woman who lives the blues she sings.

Cadillac Records Movie

Cadillac Records would have benefited from a more determined focus on the historical backdrop, and less on distracting, far from subtle episodic detours into raw, fitful sentimentality. But the music is simply irresistible and makes up for any unpolished narrative flaws. And stealing the show, so to speak are Beyonce’s mesmerizing Etta James - coming full-throated circle for the performer upstaged by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, Eamonn Walker’s stunning Howlin’ Wolf impression, and without question, Mos Def’s hilariously irreverent reprisal of rock ‘n roll’s young rabble-rouser founding father extraordinaire, Chuck Berry.

Cadillac Records
3/4 stars

Cadillac Records has a lot of potential for Oscar season. It had everything Walk the Line had, only multiply that by five. We are not talking about one story, but stories centered around about five top blues artists from the fifties period.

Some people would say it’s about Leonard Chess, since “Chess Records” gave out Cadillacs to its artists. That is probably why the movie is called Cadillac Records. The movie seems to center on Muddy Waters, before also exploring the careers of Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, and Chuck Berry.

In the beginning it started out well. But when some of the musicians were supposed to be playing, the camera focused on the actors’ faces, then it cut to a close-up of fingers on guitar, and no wide shots, meaning that not all actors were actually playing the instruments. Even in a movie like School of Rock, they got kids that could play their instruments! However, that became a non-issue after Beyonce as Etta James became part of the movie. She was emotionally moving in this movie and I would be surprised if she wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.

The music in this movie was especially good, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a whole new generation of “kids” came to love these old blues artists because of the attention brought to them by this movie.

Beyonce is such a great singer! But I believe her best showcase of her acting ability will come in the movie “Obsessed” in February where she does no singing just acting only! Now, that’s the movie I’m waiting for…………

55.

YaChi

Friday, November 28, 2008 /

The singing was ok, buy the original is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Beyonce has range, but she doesn’t utlize it or doesn’t know how. Screaming is not showing range. With a song like that you have to put in emotion. It just can’t be about the voice. IMO, she didn’t have it. Oh well, chica make that paper.

I do have to agree with others though. If she wants to be taken seriously as an actress, she has got to move away from these singing roles. Yes, she can sing, we know that. She can’t act and that takes lessons. I don’t think she has the patience for acting. Working on an album, tours, promotion takes a lot of physical work. Acting takes a lot of hard mental and emotional work. I don’t think she has the ability to do it. Hell, she may not want to do it, but this talk of an Oscar needs to be let go. I mean seriously.

Obviously its supid stans who must be under 20 if you say you like Beyonce’s voice more than ETTA JAMES>>>???? Are you effin’ CRAZY that damn song is like the classic love song. beyonce’s thin voice can’t really handle that song but of course stans are brainwashed into believing that she can “sang” hell no, Etta “sangs” Beyonce “sings” big difference!!! LMAO And Beyonce can’t act to save her life, she is awful, unatural, and completely robotic, how many takes did she do to cry on cue? hahahaaaaa! I bet it took 20 times to get it right. There is no way she will EVER see an Oscar in her lifetime unless they pay off the oscar committee!! Faith Evans has more life experience and a better voice and should have been chosen for the role, beyonce needs to hang it up.

That pant suit she had on makes her look 35, she is really aging fast, plus the ponytail is so played, I guess that’s all they can come up with since the hump hair was talked about so badly and you all know she reads this blog !! lol

People really need to get a grip..more reviews will come in the week of the release (next week) but the review or two I’ve seen where people have gone on and on about her acting, it seems that they were just shocked that she wasn’t bad. They’re singing her praises because she did well to their surprise…well, that’s what actors do…they act! People need to put this in context. When you praise Beyonce for “shocking” or “disalarming” you, you’re praising her for doing what actors do - act! She needs to be judged by her performance and not by what you expected of her…that’s what an actress does, she gets the part because she is good and awards because she is phenomenal. SMH
But, having said that, the truth is in the reviews that have come out several people have been less than over the moon..one said she would get people in seats and that’s it…another said the fact that everytime she opened her mouth to sing you heard Beyonce it threw you off…
More than that why did the director skip this press conference???

If Whoopi Goldberg couldnt win an Oscar for The Color Purple, if Angela Bassett couldn’t win an Oscar for What’s Love Got to Do With It?, if Diana Ross couldn’t win an Oscar for Lady Sings The Blues, if Jennifer Lopez couldn’t win an Oscar for Selena WHY SHOULD SHE? She has the audacity to sit up there telling people that she wants to win an Oscar before 30…….can you name me any other respectable actress that has said that? She doesn’t act or she doesn’t want to win an Oscar because she LOVES to act the way she loves to sing…..she wants to win an Oscar because in all honesty it is the greatest award you can win. I don’t understand how people get to practice their acting skills in big budget mainstream movies? I understand that Beyonce is a big name talent and has box office appeal, but I find it ironic that the movie discusses the color barrier in the 60’s and how black stars couldn’t crossover, regardless of how talented they are because of they didn’t appeal to a white audience all why using the a black pop star in a lead role, because a talented black actress wouldn’t be able to cross the movie over. It’s the height of irony and it just shows we haven’t gotten very far at all.

She’s not a great actress, but neither is Scarlett Johansen or Jennifer Lopez and a whole bunch of other people…so at the end of the day it is what it is.

Beyonce in ‘Cadillac Records’: the EW First Look

Nov 25, 2008, 01:41 PM | by Margeaux Watson
Categories: Film, Music

Last night, I attended a media screening of Cadillac Records in New York while my colleague Carrie Bell was on the scene at the movie’s star-studded L.A. premiere at the Egyptian Theater, followed by an after-party at Les Deux. I had been dying to see the film ever since Beyonce Knowles landed the role of R&B legend and ex-heroin addict Etta James. The movie, which follows Chicago-based Chess Records in the 1950s and ’60s, also stars Adrien Brody as label founder Leonard Chess, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, and Mos Def as Chuck Berry. Working with those guys clearly inspired B to step up her acting game. She doesn’t appear on screen until the second hour of the movie, but it’s worth the wait, as this is her finest cinematic performance to date. Tortured, tragic, and playfully profane, she inhabits the role with fiery conviction, though it’s certainly the most sanitized depiction of a junkie I’ve ever seen (Trainspotting this is not). The only major drawback to her performance is that she lacks the pained vocal chops to convincingly pull off James’ songs or make them her own like Diana Ross did with Billie Holiday’s standards in 1972’s Lady Sings the Blues. Each time she covers classics like “At Last” and “Trust In Me,” you hear Beyonce, not Etta. Apparently, James agrees. Last night when Carrie asked her how she felt about Beyonce’s portrayal, she replied, “She did her thing. She sings good, but I don’t think she sings as good as me.” True that, diva.

Wow, you’re smart…I didn’t even think of that! It is rather ironic!
I’m still wondering about the director…is something up? The movie hasn’t gotten great reviews…People have called the director’s method into question and have said things like certain characters “saved it”…I don’t know…as I said, the bulk of the reviews will come out this week, so… but it looks like the film is going to get ok to bad reviews.

I meant Variety, not Vanity Fair and here it is. And the critic did write her performance was “soulful” but in summing the whole thing up in the introduction, he says merely Beyonce “will put bottoms in seats” while calling Jeffrey Wright’s perfomance “unforgettable”……

Approaching the blues with the enthusiasm of an overcaffeinated brass band, helmer Darnell Martin nonetheless makes some kind of music with the percolating ’50s biopic “Cadillac Records” — mostly because she mines a righteous, mythic sensibility out of the story of Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters and the birth of the Chicago blues. Jeffrey Wright’s Waters is unforgettable, Eamonn Walker gives an unnerving performance as rival bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, and Beyonce Knowles’ Etta James should put bottoms in seats.
The second feature this year to focus on the same musicians, “Cadillac Records” takes a far broader approach than Jerry Zaks’ “Who Do You Love,”‘ which concentrated more on the conflicted character of Chess than on the artists he hired, promoted, profited from and, some say, exploited. In “Cadillac Records,” Adrien Brody cuts an appropriately oily figure as the man who founded Chess Records in 1956, while Wright delivers a performance of eloquent, simmering dignity as Waters — the first Chess star, one of the great vocalists in American music and the dramatic engine of Martin’s film.

Working off her own well-researched screenplay, Martin goes so far as to have Chess’ path crossed by shadowy, muttering figures. “I’ve lost daughters to bluesmen,” they warn him outside the black nightclub he plans to open. “It’s a dangerous business you in.” No kidding: At the Club Macambo, where Chess starts booking local talent, the so-called Headhunters barge in — Waters, harmonica virtuoso Little Walter (Columbus Short) and guitarist Jimmy Rogers (Kevin Mambo). They take over the stage, fists are thrown and someone pulls a gun. Chess does the smart, politic thing and hires the invaders.

He also starts recording Waters, whose “I Can’t Be Satisfied” puts them all on the map. Bookending narration provided by Cedric the Entertainer, seriously miscast as the great songwriter Willie Dixon, tells the story of Chess’ expansion, his paying off of disc jockeys, his fostering of the unstable Little Walter, Waters’ marriage to steady, long-suffering Geneva Wade (Gabrielle Union), the clash between Waters and Howlin’ Wolf (by all accounts one of the most ferocious blues performers ever — and Walker makes you believe it), and the eventual signing of the troubled James (Knowles), whose “At Last” becomes one of the label’s real crossover hits.

One suspects Martin is a convert, one who might have come to the blues unconvinced but came away a fire-and-brimstone evangelist for the music and its people — which is good, because an overfamiliarity with the minutiae might have strangled what is, on a very basic level, a solid story. Most of the details are right-on in “Cadillac Records,” though the director’s efforts to sell it sometimes steers the film into mawkish or hokey territory.

Where it’s dead serious, though, is as a racial parable that couldn’t be timelier. Chess Records was a mixed marriage — the owner was a Polish immigrant, his artists were African-American, and much of the America they inhabited was hostile to any such arrangement. This all comes to a head after Chess signs Chuck Berry (a dryly funny Mos Def), whose hybridized pop sound had some promoters thinking he was a white country singer.

Berry is the guy who puts Chess over the top; as someone says, they’re not sure what he’s playing, but it’s not the blues. But it sells, and it bridges the racial divide: In a scene duplicated in “Who Do You Love,” the velvet ropes separating whites and blacks at a Berry concert are toppled by the audience. That Martin later has Knowles reprise the entire racial psychology of America through James and her seemingly insoluble identity problems, by contrast, is overkill; Knowles gives a soulful portrayal, but her part of the movie seems to exist in another dimension entirely.

As Waters’ self-destructive protege, Short brings blood and soul to a classic role — a kind of prince of the blues who eventually becomes torn over whether to revere the king or dethrone him.

The music — most of it performed by the actors themselves — has a real richness to it, if not quite the muscle of the Chess records themselves. Recording sessions are shot like live concerts; the club gigs feel sweaty and smoky. And Def’s Berry performances succeed in capturing what it felt like when the blues had a baby and they named it rock ‘n’ roll.

Cadillac Records Movie Review

By Prairie Miller

Race and rhythm come together in the rousing tribute to the roots of US music for the masses and the rise of the Chess label, at the turbulent convergence of blues, rock ‘n roll and Jim Crow, in Cadillac Records. But in a situation of the wild beat being just a little too electrifying for its own good, Cadillac Records is a case of the music upstaging the melodrama.

Written and directed by Darnell Martin (I Like It Like That) - billed as the first African American woman to make a movie for a Hollywood studio - Cadillac Records chronicles the birth of Chicago blues and the subsequent impetus to the breakout popular recorded music in the 1950s. And, a concurrent racial and musical cross-pollination that was rock ‘n roll.

Darnell gets the sounds just right, miraculously from actors making their own music. But the storytelling is another matter, a distracting weakness not helped by doing on screen explanatory damage control via voiceovers by Cedric The Entertainer, as barely realized blues musician and songwriter Willie Dixon. And as key dramatic sequences are more often than not described rather than enacted, or conveyed as over the top whining rather than emotionally compelling, the weaker, shrill narrative rhythms of the story fail to harmonize and pale in comparison to the music.

Adrien Brody is Leonard Chess in Cadillac Records, a Jewish immigrant and Chicago nightclub owner turned music promoter who was a key figure in integrating what was once known shamefully as ‘race music.’ A shrewd wheeler dealer businessman, Chess is unaware when he recruits struggling, uprooted Mississippi sharecropper street musician Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), that his proposed financial arrangement with this genius guitarist would be historic.

As the Chess music business expands from recording to radio and the experimental explosive sounds evolve with the addition of Howlin’ Wolf (Eamonn Walker), Little Walter (Columbus Short) and Etta James (Beyonce Knowles), the nation is taken by musical storm. And racial barriers seem to come tumbling down with segregated mental mindsets and government decrees lagging far behind, though not without terror and tragedy in its wake.

The Big Picture
Patrick Goldstein on the collision of entertainment, media and pop culture

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in Chicago, home of two great baseball teams, a host of colorful politicians and the best blues in the world. Back in the day, you weren’t anyone in the blues world unless you were signed to Chess Records, the label that made stars out of a generation of rough and tumble musicians, notably Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf.

So when I was at the recent Toronto Film Festival, I made a point of seeing “Who Do You Love,” which stars Alessandro Nivola and Jon Abrahams as Leonard and Phil Chess, two hard-nosed immigrant entrepreneurs who ended up creating Chess Records, the 1950s record label that popularized urban blues and later, with the arrival of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, ushered in a brash new form of rock ‘n’ roll that was adopted by the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and thousands of other young white rock artists.

After the screening, I ran into a film executive, who whispered in my ear, “Do you know that there’s another one?” Puzzled, I said, “Another what?” He laughed. “Another movie about Chess Records.”

I really thought he was joking, but it’s true. Against all odds and sound commercial judgment, the same crazy movie business that once made two asteroid movies and two movies about Truman Capote has now made two movies about the obscure icons of 1950s Chicago blues. What are the odds?

The second Chess film, made by Sony BMG Films, is “Cadillac Records,” which will be released Dec. 5 through Sony’s TriStar Pictures. Produced by Sofia Sondervan and Andy Lack, Sony BMG’s former chairman (who just took a new job running Bloomberg’s multimedia operations), the film has considerably more star power than its rival, featuring Beyonce Knowles as Chess’ top songstress, Etta James; Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess; Mos Def as Chuck Berry; and Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters.

It’s probably a misnomer to call the two pictures rivals, since “Who Do You Love,” despite earning some good notices in Toronto, remains a long shot to land a theatrical release. “Cadillac Records” will be out in 800 theaters, with a Beyonce single and a soundtrack to help attract attention. Still, the question remains–what are the odds of two 1950s blues movies being made at the same time?

The answer, as always, is that making a movie isn’t exactly a rational decision–passion trumps pragmatism. Neither film came out of today’s increasingly timid studio system, which wouldn’t dream of risking any loot on such obscure subject matter. “Cadillac Records” was championed by Lack, the former head of NBC News who ran Sony Music before being kicked upstairs after its BMG merger. According to Sondervan, Lack’s family is from the Mississippi Delta, where he grew up listening to the blues, which gave him a strong interest in the story. “Who Do You Love” was financed by Jonathan Mitchell, a wealthy real estate developer with a love for the blues and directed by Jerry Zaks, who remembers singing to R&B records as a boy in his family basement.

“I was always drawn to black music,” recalls Zaks, a four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway theater director. “When I was in fifth grade, I was convinced I was Marvin Gaye. I’d put on the records I loved, everything from Gaye and Johnny Nash to Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley, and sing to the records in front of the mirror. I think that music had a powerful impact on a whole generation of kids.”

But those kids are all nearing retirement age today and not especially regular moviegoers. So who’s going to turn out for these films? When I asked Sondervan what made her think a blues movie could make a dent in today’s marketplace, she offered an honest answer. “I don’t really know,” she said. “All I know is that Beyonce has a huge young following and a lot of people will come see the movie just because she’s in it.” She added that Beyonce has designed a clothing line of dresses inspired by the fashions in the film that are being launched later this fall at Bloomingdale’s. “All the young people we’ve shown the film to really loved it,” she says. “The blues is coming back. It’s getting played at a lot of trendy restaurants, so there’s a lot of new awareness out there.”

Hhmm. Like I said, making movies isn’t always a rational decision. Will Beyonce fans want to see her as a troubled ’50s blues diva? Angelina Jolie fans do show up when she’s trading gunfire with Brad Pitt, but they didn’t bother to come when she played Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart.” And George Clooney fans, who loved him in “Oceans Eleven,” turned up their noses at “Leatherheads” and “The Good German.”

Music biopics have a pretty spotty track record. Taylor Hackford’s “Ray” was a surprise hit (though it was also independently financed outside the studio system). But “She’s Not There,” Todd Haynes’ impressionistic Bob Dylan biopic, never found an audience, despite a raft of rave reviews. Even “Dreamgirls,” the Bill Condon film loosely based on the Supremes, was a box-office disappointment.

The real challenge for films that re-create the lives of real characters is–how true to life are they? Sony hasn’t screened “Cadillac Records” yet, but the person who knows the story best of all–Leonard’s son, Marshall Chess, who served as a technical consultant on both projects–says both movies took some dramatic liberties with many of the characters’ personal lives. Which film took the most liberties? Which actor came the closest to capturing his real-life character? And which movie ended up cutting Chuck Berry entirely out of the story? We’ll have Part 2 of our post up soon, so stay tuned.

I forgot to add. People campaign for oscars. You should never read a review and not look at it skeptically. Beyonce and her team have already started the campaigning for this Oscar, this is why we heard about the “Oscar buzz” before the movie had even wrapped.

Beyonce has made it very clear that she wants to be and ICON and unfortunately her definition of ICON is raking up awards. But my definition of and Icon is a person that can truly inspire people and actually leaves a mark of on history that is undeniable. With multiple albums under her belt, Beyonce still doesn’t have a “I Will Always Love You” or a “Vogue” or a “Thriller” or even an “At Last”. It’s not because she doesn’t have the talent, but it because she so obsessed with strategy, she’s never had the opportunity to be an actual artist. No matter how many awards she racks up and international tours she does, there are still people who don’t know a single song of hers or who she even is. While some find her ambition admirable, I find it embarrassing. It sounds really stupid to talk about wanting an Oscar before 30 as if it’s something you just apply for and pick up, versus wanting a challenging role that leaves and impression on people. The reward should be in the role itself, the Oscar should just be the icing on the cake. I find it so unbecoming when stars look for their “oscar roles”. That’s the difference between a star and an artist.

Beyonce’s performance surprised the hell out of me… especially the scene when she’s in the restaurant. Phenomenal! Golden Globe? Yes. Oscar? Maybe.

Yes. Overall the movie is fine… there are some really good performances: Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Columbus Short, Mos Def… but BEYONCE = wonderful! No more cute, innocent shell to hide behind. And not another bland singing role! Her performance in Cadillac Records made Dreamgirls look like The Muppets!!!

It was an advanced screening… there are several scenes between Adrien & Beyonce that surpass typical displays of love in the film… you have to see it for yourself.

(About the heroin scene) Now I don’t want to give too much away… but it’s more so the after effects… she’s just a supporting character, so the movie isn’t focused on her.

I tell you this is a performance I’ve been waiting for from Beyonce. No Carmen or Fighting Temptations or Dreamgirls or Austin Powers or Pink Panther. A really flawed, real character/singer. And she pulls it off!

“Cadillac Records,” a sleeper musical from Sony/Tri Star about the early days of Chess Records and the mainstream emergence of such blues artists as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Etta James, had SAG nominating committee members whooping it up at the Fine Arts on Sunday, applauding performances by Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Columbus Short and others. Costar and producer Beyonce couldn’t make the Q&A, as she was performing at the AMAs that evening. The execs behind the entertaining picture are hoping for some serious love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. in its Golden Globe comedy/musical categories. Beyonce as Etta James, Mos Def as Berry, Wright as Muddy Waters, Eammon Walker as Howlin’ Wolf and newcomer Columbus Short as L’il Walter tear up the screen and deliver sizzling performances that merit the attention. Beyonce shows “Dreamgirls” was no fluke. She’s the real triple threat: singer, dancer, actress.

Beyonce did a great job signing, but I know alot of people will compare her to James singing this song. Look, no one can sing it like Etta because it takes a certain type of pain to sing this song to the ground. Like James originally commented, Beyonce is a choir girl next to her. When she says choir girl, she is not saying anything about her singing voice, but her lifestyle. I can see an improvement in her acting, but I did enjoy what I saw.

I was suprised that Gabrielle Union had some tramatic scene’s and carried them and might as well be in a catergory of a Golden Globe nomination. Beyonce rocked the hous, no more said Beyonce’s performance was mesmerizing.

Another brilliant comment that I agree with completely! I always thought it was incredibly pretentious to have an Oscar win as your goal when you’re a non-actress. Even actresses who have studied, acted and honed their craft for years don’t do as much…Weird. As I said initially, I think Beyonce is getting praise because she wasn’t bad…what I’ve seen in the previews is a bunch of overacting and really random contrived emotion…because, I’m sure, she thinks biopic + heroin addled star + self mutilation + tons of emotion on display usually equals Oscar.

This goes to show money will get you any role you want and damn near anything you want period. But it will not get you raw talent. And that’s what she doesn’t have. Singing or acting, she doesn’t have it. She looks nice and she shakes her ass all the time that’s what’s carrying her. Its time to hang it up grandma!

for goodness sake, just STFU. i swear some of ya’ll need to be thanking beyonce for giving ya’ll something to talk about EVERYDAY. honestly, what would ya’ll do if beyonce suddenly left the scene? ya’ll would be bored out of your minds. instead of sitting at an office working, people are on here hating on bee. instead of concentrating on something ele, people are on here hating on bee. we get it, you don’t like her, but how can you say what you THINK of the movie when you have yet to see the movie? forget i even asked, it’s hateration at it’s finest. i will never for the life of me get why people who don’t like beyonce come into her posts and waste so much energy on her. posting 10 different times when we got the gist the first time? it’s people like you who keep her on top because the more you hate and the more comment she gets, the higher she ranks when forbes puts out those powerful celeb list. those are based on web hits too you know? if you don’t like her, her music, her acting, SIMPLY IGNORE HER. it’s almost as if it’s hard for some of ya’ll to comprehend that. she got ya’ll minds bent and ya’ll don’t even know it. wasting your precious time writing thesis statements…..SMDH

also, some of ya’ll would NEVER give her props. she could find the cure for HIV and some of ya’ll would STILL find something wrong with her. i guess when you have so much hate in your heart, it’s hard to spread likeness, not even love, to someone else.

i will wait to judge the movie when i go see it. i will not let anybody’s opinion of bee or acting influence MY own opinion.

GIVE IT UP 73 AND 75, EVERYONE KNOWS YOU ARE NOT ME, I HAVE AN AVATAR NOW REMEMBER…..LOL….BUT POST ON….LOL

IT’S HARD TO SPEAK ON THIS POST, THAT LOUSY ACTING SPOKE FOR ITSELF! JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER ACTRESS WHO COMES TO MIND COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB. PEOPLE SAY, OH, IT’S JUST A SMALL CLIP, HOW CAN YOU JUDGE HER ACTING ABILITIES IN THAT SMALL CLIP…WELL FROM WHAT I HEAR, SHE’S ONLY IN THE LAST 30 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE, WHICH MEANS SHE DON’T HAVE THAT MANY SCENES….IF YOU CAN’T ROCK THE FEW SMALL SCENES YOU ARE IN, THEN YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS IN THE MOVIE…..IN ACTING CLASS, THEY TEACH YOU HOW TO BECOME A PERSON IN ONE LINE, ONE WORD……SHE DIDN’T DO THAT FOR ME…IT LOOKED LIKE BEYONCE TRYING TOO HARD ONCE AGAIN….IN THAT SMALL SCENE, SHE SHOULD HAVE ROCKED IT….

BEYONCE IS JUST A POOR ACTRESS, HORRIBLE TO SAY THE LEAST. SHE CANNOT ACT, PERIOD! I THINK THE REVIEWS MIGHT BE A SIGH OF RELIEF FROM THE CRITICS WHO THOUGHT SHE WOULD DO BETTER, BUT ONCE AGAINS SHE FAILS AS AN ACTRESS IN MY BOOK, THEREFORE, I WILL NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE….I’LL GET THE BOOTLEG DVD TO WATCH GABBY.

I DUNNO, SHE’S GOT ANOTHER MOVIE COMING OUT, MAYBE SHE’LL SHOW SOME ACTUALLY ACTING ABILITIES AND/OR SOME RANGE….SHE’S JUST HORRIBLE……AT SOME POINT, PUTTING HER IN THESE FILMS WILL BACKFIRE, AND MOVIE EXECUTIVES WILL SEE THAT “GIVING” HER THESE ROLES IS NOT PROFITABLE FOR THEM SINCE SHE WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO BRING IN THE BLACK AUDIENCE….NO FOOL WOULD PUT HER IN THESE FILMS FOR HER GENUINE ACTING ABILITIES (I MEAN EVEN THE PROFESSIONAL CRITICS REALIZE SHE CAN’T ACT), AND YOU KNOW IT’S SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HOW MANY NO BRAIN IDIOT-LIKE FOOLS SHE CAN DRAW TO THE THEATRE FOR OTHER REASONS, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HER ACTING…..IT’S JUST RIDICULOUS, AND IT’S A SAD TIMES FOR REAL BONAFIDE HOLLYWOOD BLACK ACTRESSES.

I agree! Although I saw the film recently and she was better than I’d initially believed her to be… But she wasn’t all that and just as you - and Beyonce - pointed out, simply a “mad black woman”…But the irony (or hypocrisy) here is Beyonce is just that…from the previews, her character is essentially the angry black woman with an attitude.
I think this should be very interesting because if Beyonce gets nominated for her extended music video, she’ll be up against Taraji… That should be fun to watch…has it ever happened?

Friday, November 28, 2008 /

Ok, I love Beyonce with all my heart and I am a dear fan…credit is due to her vocal talent. Of course she can blow and show great emotion for a song, it is what she does for a living. But the acting, and I’ve seen other clips besides this one that shows her acting on this movie, it’s just not up to par. Beyonce if you do read this, I’m sorry, but it is the honest to God trueth.

I think that she should start to choose roles that have NO singing in it at all. Get use to acting all the way. It is a serious craft. Most likely she will be nominated for the Globe and Oscar and that is because she is Beyonce and she’s said she wants it and she knows people. But it is not deserving just yet. She has a long way to go. However, I will go see the movie because once again I am a true fan. But just because I’m a fan doesn’t mean I have to like every single thing she puts out. I’m a supporter.

I would suggest CHIP FIELDS as an acting coach. She was very helpful with me and other actors including celebrities in Los Angeles.

Me No Likey Stans is telling the truth. I will not say that Beyonce does not care about black actresses, but I will say that she like many others on this board are ignorant to the struggle of black actresses. How would singers like it if just anyone could come along when they felt like it and sang a song without an respect for their craft. I love Beyonce, but we need to understand why black women are grossly under represented in Hollywood. Why? We keep giving parts to the same two black women, and then wonder why there’s little or no star power. This role should have gone to an unknown. Now, you want to talk about how white actors keeping star power within certain circles..okay. Nikki Blanki (excuse the spelling) was an unknown, and she acted in Hair. Then, she began to get other acting jobs, but she started as an unknown. If we continue to allow Beyonce, and other people who are already famous to play every role designed for black women, well, how will unknown black women who are true to their craft make a living?

Beyonce is a singer and I cannot recall her claiming to be an actress. The producers know that she has more box office appeal than many other lesser known, but probably better, black actresses i.e folks will pay to see Beyone - that’s why she got the part. Its not all show - there is also the matter of business. If great acting was the one and only concern , then Merril Streep would have been a better choice . Good to see a black woman stepping up and getting her share instead of sitting in the backgound complaining.

For her to be convincing she needs to do a non-singing role and get intense acting lessons, this sh** is nothing, anybody can play Etta. This movie isn’t soley about Etta they way i’ts hyped up to be, it’s no “Lady Sings the Blues” that’s for sure!!

The Oscar is a serious serious award..JHUD was much better than beyonce can ever dream to be in Dreamgirls. Jennifer, no matter how much she portrayed the angry black woman, she was believable.. Beyonce is seriously not believable as an actress..she is very fake and comes across like she it “acting” on screen, its supposed to be natural and you are supposed to believe the character is authentic, beyonce looks like beyonce in a wig playing etta james, you never get lost in her performance, she just doesn’t have the chops. Matthew Knowles can’t buy her an icon status and surely can’t buy her an oscar. She’ll never win one simply because of this juevenille campaign she’s been going on talking about winning an oscar before 30, no serious actor who knows a dime’s worth about the movie business would ever utter such foolishness…its the kiss of death to her chances of ever winning. To top it off, she can’t act, womp womp womp. Sit down beyonce, just watch Gabby get the nomination! LOL

196.

Why you gotta be anonymous??

Friday, November 28, 2008 /

@ MoMo # 71….I honestly agree 100% because you’ve really made valid points. Beyonce plays it safe with the roles that involves her singing. This movie is about Etta but I hear ‘Beyonce’ all up and thru it. The sole purpose of playing a role is for the audience to actually believe you are that character that you’re portraying. I shouldn’t look at the screen and ’see’ Beyonce, I should see ‘Etta’ for that is the character she is trying to portray. And yeah if Whoopi, Angela, Diana, hell even Jenny from the block didn’t get one of them Oscars, the reality of it is Beyonce is dam sure not deserving of one even if she does a good job. She should just get a pat on the back and call it a day. So in other words she needs some epsom salt for that big ass head of hers cause its kinda on swoll. And the truth shall set you free…

She is obsessed with trying to prove to the world that she is the best at everything. She is really a jack of all trades and a master of none, this is her downfall, Beyonce is not a Good actress, not a great actress, not even an okay actress, the truth hurts but the truth is Diana Ross was a damn good actress, beyonce is so sub par it isn’t even funny. Being overly dramatic and crying at the drop of a dime, being a stereotypical drug addict singer is not going to cut it. She’s not doing anything that hasn’t already been done, and done better by others! this chick is just a manufactured idiot whose family gasses up her head to believe that she should be an ICON and an OSCAR winner, even though she isn’t worthy of it. I hope she retires soon because she is an embarrassment to black people. Begging to sing at the inauguration, begging to be an icon, begging for an oscar, this is how you can tell she’s not qualified for any of these lofty awards and accomplishments, Greatness does not need to self-promote. The people will bestow upon you status of an ICON without you trying to force them too, the oscar committe will bestow an oscar upon you if and when you prove yourself worthy. How DUMB of beyonce to say she wants an Oscar before 30…what if you don’t do a role worthy of one??? YOU still believe you should have one based on your age and ambition vs. it being based on your acting ability??? She is on DUMD @ss that should be kept from speaking in public. Home Schooled??? Yes it actually shows. Such a loser, beyonce.

Beyonce backlash is coming, she was built up to be much bigger than she really is and now people are tearing her down little by little. She is horrible in movies and this is no different. She really should stop trying to force feed the public her awful acting. I will not go see this movie because it is the same ol’ same ol’. Beyonce is a tacky, uneducated woman with no depth and no talent in the acting department. Her dad, if he truly was in her corner and not only in it for money would sit her down and tell her the truth. Her acting sucks. Holding a press conference when you have zero talent in acting is pointless. It won’t get you an Oscar, just wait for those nominations to be released, you have to be the biggest fool if you think Beyonce’s name will be on the list. I mean seriously people. Hollywood does not just give away Oscars to black people because someone says they were good in a movie (and beyonce was not good) it’s much more political. Beyonce is not causing the stir that JHUD caused and this movie will not garner half the attention that Dreamgirls did, its a wrap for Beyonce’s acting career. She is terrible.

The movie was made by Sony BMG, that is Beyonce’s record company, that makes it easier for her to get roles. Also her new movie obsessed is produced by her father, who else would he put in the movie? She can sing but she is not that great of an actress. I know you stans love her, but actors don’t win Ocars for improving, they win for being amazing period. I’m sure Beyonce improved, but she is at the end of the movie, why would she get an oscar, even supporting actors have a bigger air time. I feel this would be like DreamGirls, they play her best scenes and they hype her up, and i get dissappointed. I will wait for more reviews, before I fully decide. Watching movies are quite expensive these days.

Bey BIGGEST fan

Saturday, November 29, 2008 /

Bey, I love u girl, but acting is just not for you. Please stop it, you are making a fool of yourself. First you are running around with a split personality trying to be something you’re not, now you are trying to pretend your way into Oscarville. Just because JHUD got one, and she was barely known, does not mean you are destined to get one just because you’ve been in the singing game for 12 years. The difference is that JHUD can actually hold her own and it was a part that was made for her. She became Effie, you did not become Dena, just like you have not become Etta or anyone else you’ve played. You are always just beyonce in a wig. Girl, just stop it, you can’t have an Oscar just because you want one before you turn 30. Plus, isn’t it too late anyway? Gabby said you two have been friends since you were teens. It’s a bit late to get an Oscar before 30 because you know Gabby is like 36 so that means if you two were friends since teens, then you must be well into your thirties as well.
Just stick to singing and come out with your real age because everyone can see you are NOT 27, but we still love you, girl those laugh lines and beginning of crows feet by the eyes are telling your age. Just sing Bey, but leave acting alone because you are making yourself look really bad.

signed,

The Honest Critic

Saturday, November 29, 2008 /

She sounds good singing the song, but her voice does Etta James no justice to be honest and if you know anything about Etta’s voice she had a very deep undertone voice and Beyonce has a more high pitched voice. Not to say Beyonce didn’t sound great, but her part was portraying Etta. Anyways people movie making now is all about business. The sad part about casting black actresses is that they are not bringing in enough money unless it’s like Queen Latifah. The movie business has gone down hill. BEyonce was chosen for this part simply because her camp funded some of this movie and because of her name. HEr acting coach should be fired because part of going into character is losing your actual Accent and she never succeeds in doing so which is why people don’t take her acting seriously. Her body language sucks too. Look at Halle in Dorothy Dandridge, Jamie in Ray, or Angela Bassett in Tina Turner. Those people transformed to a point where you forgot who they actually were in real life. Look at Jeffrey Wright who can do almost any character whether it be black, hispanic, nerdy, or mean. This movie was about money people.

I think I’m more interested in seeing a part of Etta James’ life play out on screen, since I listen to her more than I listen to Beyonce or any other mianstream artist. I was especially tuned because she was singing one of my faves. “All I Could Do was Cry” and I know that song inside out and thought that there were parts where Beyonce put her own vocal inflections on the song, but other than that she did good. She’s quite slimmer than Etta was even back in those days though.
Another thing is this film is about Chess Records, so it’s not just about Beyonce and Etta James. Eamonn Walker as Howlin’ Wolf who was the epitome of the New Orleans blues musician or Mos Def as Chuck Berry, everyone know the infamous “duck walk” whether you know it’s origin on not. I think this one will be a hit with the older crowd.

Beyonce has no natural talent in terms of singing she has no feeling when she sings that is why people say she can’t sing because like everything else she does it’s over the top and not in a good way. She was trained and that’s fine but the girl has no tone.
See her performance from the other morning I think it was the Today show. She doesn’t really sound good live. Her voice is thin and full of tin. She was a little pageant girl and that’s all she’ll ever be. IF you like that buy it it’s all a matter of taste and authenticity.
IT’s not for me

B is a beautiful, hard working woman with nice vocals who seems to put her all into what she does. However, I have very strong opinions regarding her ability to act (don’t call me hater.. get a dictionary and expand your vocabulary). I think she is improving but to call her a great actress is a bit of a stretch. I had a problem with her singing these songs in her real voice. She should have lip-synced to Etta’s voice. Really. Their voices are not similar.. at all! Etta has a much deeper, richer register. I am sure she will put forth a decent effort in this movie but I feel bad for actresses like Angela Bassett. Angela is a TALENT! Sometimes I refuse to watch the Oscar’s because they really did her a disservice by not giving her the Best Actress for her portrayal of Tina Turner. And it is a bit fishy that B gets roles in movies where she is either financing or producing or being promoted to put buts in the seats.

I and other critics will respect her acting ability more if she goes through real auditions against other actresses. Takes on a non-singing role. Changes her ACCENT. I’m sorry but watching her speak on screen.. is the same as her interviews. See Angela in What’s Love.. Kerry Washington in Last King of Scotland. Sophie Okenedo (British Actress) in Hotel Rwanda and Secret Life of Bees. I am curious to see handles playing EARTHA KITT. Can she change her voice to get that distinct purr and pseudo-European accent that Kitt has? We shall see.

The reason B is getting so much flack for her Oscar comment is because she does not deserve one. Sorry. She is a wonderful singer and performer but an Oscar? Let us step away from the ledge. Has she given us a performance to be even put in the same league as Whoopi? Charlize Theron (did you see her in Monster.. my goodness)? Cate Blanchett? Judi Dench? Penelope Cruz? Angela? Catherine Zeta Jones? Meryl Streep? This is the level she must be at and to say you want to win an Oscar before you are 30 shows that she thinks she is capable of being at this level and she us shown us no such thing.

I reserve my opinion until B gives us a performance worthy of such talk. A transforming role. Like Ray did for Jamie Fox. Or Effie did for J Hud. Say what you want about whether J Hud deserved it.. the woman became that role and blew everyone else in the movie out of the water (save for Eddie Murphy).

Here, is an article dealing with people that are really contending for the Oscars.
http://seattlepi.nwsource...s/389578_oscarbuzz28.html
I recommend that you all try to see these movies and the actors and actresses. This is the level B must achieve. I will watch Cadillac Records and wish Beyonce all the best and hope she is honing this wonderful craft that not only entertains but brings life to the screen.

For the poster who said she don’t have natural singing talent, she couldn’t do the things with her voice without having a great voice. Her voice is not thin at all. It is richer than people really but it is not as thick as say Etta’s. Even if her voice is thin, “thinned” voiced singers can’t do what Beyonce does with her voice. Ask Ciara or Janet or Rihanna or Mya or Keri or Ashanti to sing like this. They can’t.

Beyonce can sing anything at any tempo and almost any genre. People want to criticize her acting, okay. That’s fair game. She’s not bad but she is not great. I agree with that. But when it comes to the art of being a vocalist, she is the best female vocalist of her age group whether y’all like it or not.

241.

Sara

Saturday, November 29, 2008 /

@ 227 If Beyonce wants to be taken as a serious actress she must be compared to other great actresses and she is not on their level. She chose this profession so she will be crtiqued. Just like at work they critique me constantly and I have supervisors who don’t think I deserve the job. And sit down talking about some of you can’t do half the things Beyonce does, does she have a college degree nope she doesn’t. So why are you comparing us.

Point of the matter is Beyonce is a great singer and that is why she get props. But with acting she is way outta her league. She is not even respected in the movie industry. And it is clear her stans are delusional talking about she will win an Oscar, Will Smith hasn’t won an Oscar yet, and look at all the great movies he has done. Halle Berry acted for years before she won an Oscar. What makes you think Beyonce wearing a wig, not changing her accent, singing is going to win an Oscar? Also Angelina Jolie will be in best actress category, you want to compare her role in the Changeling to Beyonce’s role, please get real. Most of the reviews are saying the movie is more about a great soundtrack than the history so there you go.

First off, this part should had gone to Jill Scott (if she would slim down a bit for the part). Jill has done superb in her latest roles and unlike Beyonce, Jill writes her own songs/music, so she is a natural actress. This is a gift for artist who are gifted in writing their own stuff: Lauren Hill, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott even Erykah Badu, Macy Gray (all have done well in acting unlike Beyonce)…etc.

Beyonce does not really write her own stuff. It is always co-written. She is shallow as an artist, especially when it comes to acting…it shows so much. I am still taken back that she never called Jennifer Hudson, after all Jennifer has said in regards to looking up to Beyonce/Destiny Child etc. She owed her better than this. I honestly feel that because of her film coming up, she wanted to down play Jennifer Hudson’s plight, because she is still salty/overshadowed by Jennifer’s talent as an established Oscar “actress”/singer. I feel that some people should stick to one thing, and clearly that is singing hooks Mrs. Knowles-Carter.

Beyonce honestly needed to take a year off and work on her leaving her mark in the industry with a sound/style that we can remember her by….her first album was exactly that, and she should had stayed in that path, instead of making garbage music in reference to the last two albums. I can honestly say that there is nothing “signature” about Beyonce, Mary J., we can coin her as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Alicia Keys, is the new Stevie Wonder of soul of our generation, Jill Scott/Erykah Badu are Neo Soul Queens, etc….all I can say for Beyonce, is that she is the Queen of Pop music, and even this is a far stretch…there is a fakeness about her off stage, that transcends in everything she does and say when she is not on stage. SMDH!!!

Beyonce is just not an actress, her fans will love anything she does and they can’t be objective about her because they are all going to fall at her feet and worship no matter how horrible she is. She’s a good singer, not a great one. She’s an awful actress, and there is nothing to save her from that. No amount of coaching can help her. She is innately a fake person who is not in touch with her true self. Everything she does is an “act”. Every interview, performance, and every sound bite coming from her is nothing more than an “act”. It’s called the Beyonce act. So asking her to stop and drop her defenses, become vulnerable to a character, and become someone other than “Beyonce, the act” she has no idea how to do it. She is totally lost because all she has done all her life is learn how to “be beyonce”. She was taught how to imitate the greats from 9 years old in her bootcamp that her dad held. She isn’t capable of being anything except the pageant queen, a rehearsed wanna be diva. Too bad bey, it takes real authenticity as a person, real vulnerability, not fakeness to become a GREAT actress worthy of an Oscar. That is something Beyonce does not possess, and its very probable that she never will…

Be Honest

Saturday, November 29, 2008 /

Actually it takes some natural instinct to become an actor. I don’t see that in beyonce. I have seen the film and previous films she has starred in, and it simply isn’t there. She is awkward, too animated, doesn’t connect with her role and sometimes embarrassingly expressive when it is not called for. Beyonce doesn’t even understand her characters most of the time. For example in DreamGirls, she could not really relate to Dena, and she definitely can’t relate to Etta and has no understanding of the motivation of the characters she plays. She has no perspective and it shows of film. She can’t be a great actress when she doesn’t even understand the craft. It takes real emotional connection and understanding of the characters experience in order to accurately relay that on film. Somewhere within herself she will have to find common ground with her character, truly become the character before she will ever be seen as a serious actress. Take a look at Halle playing that crack head in Jungle Fevor, many people failed to realize that it was her. Why? Because she was no longer Halle, she became that crack head and did not bathe for 5 days in order to get into that grimey feel of living foul. Can beyonce ever really love acting enough to study and dedicate herself in this way? Or is she simply taking roles to get that almighty Oscar? She has no love for this craft, and without it she will never receive the accolades such as Oscar. If she has no real love for acting, she will never become a great actress, its just that simple.

I mean the more comments I read, it is clear that beyonce isn’t fooling anyone. I think she and her dad are so out of touch (this seems to happen when you become uber rich lol) with the public, that they really believe that she can say stupid things like “I want an Oscar before I turn 30″ and they actually believe that she will get one even though both of them know she can’t act!!! lol I think that they are so hung up in being ambitious and going after awards and recogniton until they have ultimately forgot one small detail : BEYONCE CAN’T ACT!!!! lol You can dress her up in 10 different wigs, hold press conferences, big her up but the simple fact remains, you still have a chick who can’t act, no matter how many roles she “buys”. Sorry, but you all are not going to pull the wool over the public’s eyes. Sean Combs in Monster’s Ball, or in Raisin in the Sun, now those were some pretty good performances, but he didn’t think he was about to pick up an Oscar. It’s hard work, you don’t just jump up in a movie with a wig on and proclaim you want an oscar before 30, it sound like you are nothing more than a dense idiot. Look at the truly talented actors such as Angela Bassett uhh hello beyonce, you are not on her level. What makes you think YOU should have an Oscar before 30 when a truly tlaented person such as Angela is yet to get one, even after she poured her blood sweat and tears into her role as Tina Turner!!!???! That really p!sses me off. Beyonce has no respect for those who actually have real acting ability, she just wants the award even though she has no talent in acting WHATSOEVER!!! keep it real, she is no actor, and is a disgrace to singers and rappers who actually hold talent in these areas. Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, JHUD actually have talent, show some damn humility beyonce!!! Your money can’t and won’t buy you an Oscar. Diana Ross killed that movie Lady sings the Blues and she doesn’t have an Oscar, she acts circles around this bimbo beyonce!! Go sit your lame butt down beyonce, you are such a fool!!

MORE ESSAYS! EVERYONE IS HARPING ON “I WANT TO WIN AN OSCAR BEFORE I TURN 30″ BEYONCE HAS BEEN SAYING THIS IN PUBLIC SINCE SHE WAS 18 YRS OLD. SHE HAS SAID SHE DON’T THINK SHE WILL, BUT SHE WOULD STILL LIKE TO WIN ONE IN HER LIFETIME. DO ANY OF YOU PUT LIMITS ON YOUR LIFE OR DO YOU STRIVE TO BE THE BEST AT WHATEVER YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO? EVERY ACTOR OR ACTRESS WANTS TO WIN AN OSCAR, JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T HEAR THEM SAY IT DOESN’T MAKE IT ANY LESS TRUE.

@257, not only is about her wanting an Oscar before 30, but the bish can’t act. lets not overlook that fact. If she actually had talent in that area, no one would care if she said she wanted one before 30, however it is downright silly for her to say this as though she actually has some damn talent as an actress. Call me crazy but I’d rather her say that she wants to learn how to actually ACT and validate herself as a well established actress before turning 30 because to this day she has YET to do that. Baby steps Beyonce, first actually get some acting chops before saying you want an Oscar. It’s absurd for her to say that, its like putting the cart before the horse!! Stans wake up, if you want to argue about something like this, be mad at beyonce for making dumb comments… she sounds foolish. Period.

So Beyonce wants to join the ranks of Denzel Washington, Sidney Portier, Halle Berry, Whoopi Golberg, etc. BWAHAAAA! Come on, Beyonce?? Win an Oscar???
Yes every actor wants to win an oscar. key word being “actor” beyonce is the furthest from being a real actress. Buying up roles and putting yourself in them does not make one Oscar worthy. Sitting a blonde wig on top of your head, while speaking and singing with your same old thick texas country drawl is not acting. Real actors who have studied, and auditioned and worked their butts off should be insulted by this empty headed chick trying to come up and talk her way into winning an oscar even though she doesn’t deserve one. Let’s be honest, beyonce just wants to add “actress” “oscar winner” to her list of bragging rights. She doesn’t want it for the right reasons. She’s still mad that Jhud beat her out of what was supposed to be her vehicle to winning an oscar (dreamgirls). This is an ego thing for beyonce and her stans who love to use her accomplishments on web blogs as arguments to make themselves feel better, just as they do with the forbes list crap, as if that actually makes her more of a valid artist. not. anyway, this is why she’ll never get one. her intentions are wrong and she doesn’t have the ability to do a role that will ever get her an oscar nomination, let alone an oscar win. no way.

i hate that old lady pant suit on beyonce, plus her thighs are too big for it, the pants are too tight, the hair is really wrong too. wtf is up with her style lately. she looks so blah and plain. her makeup is barely there. In all honesty she looks much better doing a full on glam look, she needs more makeup and the lacefront in order to look truly beautiful. She is not a natural beauty at all. this less is more looks exposes all of her flaws.

I heard Columbus Short KILLS his character (in a good way) and Mos Def gives an awesome performance. As far as Beyonce’s performance, I heard her singing is on point but her acting is overkill. I also heard that she’s gets unecessary camera time (like they just added scenes so she could be on camera) which is understandable because I’m sure they’re counting on her to fill seats. This also might have something to do with the fact that she produced the film, giving her more control…giving her more of a chance to show her acting “abilities”. Reviews are up. Overall they’re pretty much saying the music is great, but if you’ve seen Ray, Dreamgirls, The Temptations…etc, this movie isn’t worth your $20. On a better note I heard “Milk” is amazing.

I really don’t believe anyone is jealous of beyonce @271….She’s just not the best actress and people can see that. I know that she is trying but her voice grates on my nerves, and it doesn’t even resemble anything close to Etta James. That is the distracting thing about this movie. It just seems like a forced attempt to make beyonce seem like a real actress, but the movie would have been much better with an unknown. To tell the truth…..bey can’t do Etta’s songs or life experience any kind of justice. It takes a real actor to pull this off and bey doesn’t. The movie wasn’t worth my time.

More bad acting and more B movie type of perfomance for Knowles. NO more than Beyonce hitting glory notes to pay homage to herself, she she damn sure wasn’t singing like Etta. More self-promo for the media whore Beyonce Knowles. At this point its like Beyonce overkill. Can she please just go sit down somewhere. Just too much Beyonce lately and this movie is going to flop so will Obsessed. Just pitiful.

On a positive note, Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody save the movie. Etta should demand a movie based solely on her life and ask for a REAL actor to play her, definitely not Beyonce.

Say no more…….

Rock and roll has always been characterized by colorful characters, doing things like marrying their 13-year-old cousins or eating live bats onstage. And the people employed by Chess Records in the early 1950s, one of the first labels to bring black musicians to the mainstream, were as colorful as any. With Cadillac Records, writer-director Darnell Martin has done himself a key favor by hiring equally dynamic actors to play these early movers and shakers, from Jeffrey Wright’s laconic Muddy Waters to Mos Def’s twitchy, charming take on Chuck Berry. Martin’s serviceable direction and plodding story might have been saved by this cadre of talent had he not handed over a key role, and at least two full-fledged musical numbers, to one of the highest-paid bad actresses working today– one who also happens to have an executive producer credit.

Playing the troubled Etta James during a period of heavy addiction and depression, Beyoncé emotes and cries and seduces at all the right moments, but her character obscures what should have been the heart of the film. Muddy Waters, who was the first artist signed to Chess Records by his business partner and friend Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody), deserved to be the main character here, and you can’t help but feel the movie was driven off the rails by its biggest star.

What’s there before Beyoncé takes over is good, though serviceable and a bit amateurish in the way average biopics can be. Narrating from the present for no particular reason, Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer) tells how Waters, a sharecropper, left Mississippi for Chicago and teamed up with harmonica prodigy Little Walter (Columbus Short), a young man with an explosive temper and a penchant for anything that could get you in trouble. Chess moves from bar owner to record label impresario with Waters and Little Walter as his talent, and soon they’re making hits on black radio stations and even doing tours in the South. The movie’s title comes from Chess’s habit of buying his talent Cadillacs when they hit it big, as opposed to royalty checks. It’s one of Chess’s many shoddy business practices that doesn’t really amount to anything in Martin’s meandering script.

It’s not until Berry, with his duckwalking and country-western affectations, signs on to Chess that the label really blossoms, creating hits with white and black audiences alike. With fame comes its perils for pretty much everyone involved, including Waters’ multiple affairs behind the back of “his girl” (Gabrielle Union), Berry’s arrest and Little Walter’s multiple meltdowns. And that’s even before Etta James show up to tell Chess about her absent father, famed pool shark Minnesota Fats, and seduce him on the floor of her sad, empty house.

It’s hard to make the decadence-and-decline story of rock and roll feel new, and even though the figures in Cadillac Records are singing different songs, the tune is pretty much the same. The good parts mostly lie in the performances– Brody and Wright have an easy, sparring rapport, and Wright, Def and Short are all stellar in their vastly different roles. Including his endearing performance in this year’s Be Kind Rewind, Mos Def is becoming one of my favorite actors to simply spend time with onscreen. Wright, always good in smaller roles, would probably be getting all the attention here with his chameleonic performance, had a certain superstar not, quite literally, taken away the spotlight.

It’s unfair to blame all of Cadillac Records’ failings on Beyoncé, given the draggy pace of the script and the movie’s general unwillingness to deviate from general music biz stereotypes. But the movie might have retained its shaggy charm, and been able to make up for its many flaws, had it not morphed into yet another star turn for an actress who has yet to prove any real charisma onscreen.

Well I can say one thing about Bey, she hasn’t gone Hollywood and changed her teeth. They look healthy and natural. When your grill looks TOO PERFECT, they look fake as hell. Unlike so many other celebs rocking those huge horse-like porcelain veneers (Keyshia Cole, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Oprah, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Eddie Murphy, hell even Too Short jumped on the bandwagon) this chick kept that part of her “real”.

Ahh she was also nominated for the exact award for Dreamgirls lol
As for her reviews, when it was reported early on that her performance may be Oscar worthy it was based solely on her acting coach’s statement. Critics knew this, media outlets knew this but they were counting on the public’s being so swept up in the utter unbelievability of it all that it would never be questioned. So, while many were surprised, after seeing the film, that she didn’t perform horribly, it still amounts to little more than what is required of a real actress when she auditions for a role. It a sham, a campaign, orchestrated by Beyonce’s people… She will not win an Oscar…if she is even nominated, in fact, it will be to boost ratings. I knew the reviews would eventually turn realistic…and more of that is to come unless Papa Knowles can do a bit of “negotiating”…

bey is my girl and I think the movie will be fine. I think an Oscar may be pushing it because I haven’t seen much depth to her on screen yet. Actually JHud and Jaimee Foxx got lucky and won oscars because they both suck. JHud was so overrated I guess she wasn’t up against anybody for real. That’s a lie cause I liked Devil wears Prada Merryl Streep and errbody knows that she should have won. She was a one hit wonder. I sometimes wonder if Beyonce is envious of the fact that she got the oscar. Anywho, Beyonce sings better, looks better and is a real performer in every sense. perhaps with some lessons she will be the talent in competition for the oscar one day. I have yet to see the movie so maybe after I see it I will have a different opinion. I was wondering though, when she was talking in the white boy’s face did her breath smell like rump. Well you know I’ve heard the rumors. Also heard Janet’s breath smells like onions all the time too.

Beyonce is just not an actor and nothing she does will ever change that.
She obviously wants to win an Oscar because she can then claim to be a rammy award winner and an Oscar winner, what’s next? BROADWAY, then she’ll want a Tony award as well. BUT, she is not qualified for those awards, and those awards should only go to actors who have turned out authentic performances on stage and on film. That in itself disqualifies Beyonce….

No one has to worry about bey ever getting an Oscar because black people do not win unless they do something that is truly outstanding, and sometimes that still doesn’t happen. JHUD won because she was an unknown who did not even have her own CD out, so no one really knew her, lets face it she lost on American Idol, so she was truly unmined talent and they could justify giving her that award on raw talent and a performance that launched her acting career. She was real and overshadowed Beyonce completely in that movie. You believed her.

Beyonce is a pop star, barbie blonde headed, rump shaker, the Oscar committe is not about to cheapen the award by giving it to her LMAO. Only stans can dream. If they give Beyonce an Oscar, they might as well have given Mariah Carey one for Glitter LOL. It simply won’t happen. EVER.

I watch a show called Psych and their Christmas episode that this pretty brown skinned black girl in it who could actually act, and I thought to myself “where are all the black actresses”? Why arent black actresses given a chance? Im not blaming the Knowles family because its the industry but I do blame the fact that they are not trying to put other blacks on, I guess blacks that will take the shine. I just want to see actresses other than S. Lathan, G. Union, H. Berry, and Beyonce.

YOUR LAST SENTENCE IS JUST TOO LOGICAL FOR SOME. I AM A FAN OF HER MUSIC BUT, I AM NOT GOING TO HAVE A WAR OF WORDS OVER SOMEONE I DON’T KNOW PERSONALLY. SHE IS A HELLUVA ENTERTAINER, AND SINGER, I GIVE HER PROPS FOR THAT. SHE IS WORKING ON HER ACTING, SHE CAN ONLY GET BETTER WITH PRACTICE. I JUST DON’T GET THE LOGIC IN TELLING SOMEONE TO GIVE UP ON THEIR DREAMS. SHE’S LIVING HERS EVERYDAY, I ONLY WISH SOME OF THE NEGATIVE NAYSAYERS IN HERE DO THE SAME. BEYONCE HAS SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN, SHE THANKS GOD THAT SHE CAN WAKE UP EVERYDAY TO DO WHAT SHE LOVES. HE CONTINUES TO BLESS HER.

Beyonce is trying to prove herself in this film because Jennifer Hudson blew her away in Dreamgirls with her singing AND acting. JHud got an OSCAR because she did BOTH superbly!! I can’t blame Beyonce for trying though. Even though she can sing, dance, is sexy, has almost every man sweat’n her, is a threat to the back-in-the-day hot female singers, i.e. Janet, Toni B., ect., and is married to one of the top hip-hop mongules of the decade—not being recognized, let alone not winning an Oscar for Dreamgirls, just done left old Bee gasping. Obviously with all she has to offer, losing that one thing was just like not having nothing at all. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I saw the look on Bee’s face when she wasn’t recognized for Dreamgirls and didn’t win the Oscar to an overweight, less attractive JHud. Bee is my girl, but she has to learn that all things were not added unto her. If she doesn’t, she will become Diana Ross’ed and you see how that has worked out for Ms. Ross.
Please don’t be like that, Bee.

317, It’s crazy because you listed the people you were tired of seeing and I was thinking who is s.lathan, I hear the name often, but I knew nothing about her, hmm an interesting bio, didn’t know she did “family matters”and”moesha”and so I knew a bit more about gabby, but checked her out and seen she did “sister, sister” I may be hella late, but that’s what ya comment set off… ps. bey just setting a goal… Oscar before 30… Hey, Will set a goal, biggest actor in the world… WOW! his dream is now a reality, congrats Will. Maybe one day Bey, anythings possible, Will had to earn respect too, he continued to work his butt off and looks like you are doing the same.:)

326.

Opinion

Sunday, November 30, 2008 /

That comment about bey being like diana ross is so true, but beyonce doesn’t believe the truth about herself. She really thinks that just because she wants an oscar someone should make it happen by buying her the right role and fooling the public into thinking she really deserves one. I think most sane people know the truth, beyonce hasn’t done a damn thing to deserve an Oscar and thats just the truth.

@325, difference between Will and Beyonce is that Will is actually talented in that area. He earned respect but from the first time he acted in a tv show and in movies he showed he possessed an aptitude to be a good actor, beyonce has never shown such instinct as someone else mentioned in this topic.

Beyonce is just horrible and not talented at all when it comes to acting. She should accept the talent God gave her and just stop making herself look stupid.

Well, she was nominated for the award Jennifer was before her long string of wins and eventual Oscar triumph so maybe she will be nominated. I’ve read there’s nothing to get too excited about this year in the supporting actress category so maybe she will be nominated. But to say she’ll win is to say the Oscars won’t get enough of their buzz factor from nominating, posthumously, Heath Ledger. Unless, of course, they opt to drag Beyonce to the winner’s circle. It’s just so funny to me. lol

Do you think if beyonce’s work wasnt recognized, do you think they would nominate her for golden globes? you better watch, she is already having a nom for best supporting actress for her role I saw that on internet.

People who say she can already sing thats all, Im sorry but you are blind, she is singin which is already impressive cuz she is hittin those notes and doing it like Etta and even better, but there is interpretation behind all this and she pulls off that, im sorry but i cant see a lot of singers doing that right now; I must congrat her for her that, the pain and emotion are amazing;

Now if she wins an award maybe, golden globe or oscar or whatever, I wouldnt be surprised at all; remember jennifer hudson role in DG, everything is possible, jhud role, every black woman could do that im sorry, the way she actin with a coach every black female can do the same, can have that attitude, the only thing she was really good at was her scene of ‘and im telling you’, but she did it so well for me, her oscar is based on that scene seriously, and if interpretation really counts like this, Beyoncé got a real chance to win and ill be proud of her because she keeps growing as an actress.

MORE NEGATIVE REVIEWS FOR BEYONCE

Monday, December 1, 2008 /

Weaving together the life stories of some of America’s musical legends, the director Darnell Martin chronicles the rise and fall of Chess Records, the great Chicago blues label of the fifties and sixties. Adrien Brody stars in the vague and underwritten role of the company’s co-founder, Leonard Chess. His climactic scenes with Beyoncé Knowles (who plays the troubled singer Etta James) are unconvincing and overly dramatic. But, before it all unravels, the movie highlights inspired performances that bring to life the soulful—and undisciplined—ways of some of the greatest bluesmen and early rockers. With Jeffrey Wright, who is brilliantly seductive as Muddy Waters; Columbus Short, as Little Walter; Cedric the Entertainer, as the songwriter Willie Dixon; a joyous Mos Def as Chuck Berry; and, in a small but unforgettable performance, Eamonn Walker, as Howlin’ Wolf.

It’s from the New Yorker

First of all to all those who said Beyonce’ never claimed to be a actress well um she said she wants a Oscar people… they don’t give those to singers.. ans second she only wants one because it’s the highest award a actor-actress can get yet another notch under her belt for the Knowles’ machine it has nothing to do with her passion for acting. So I don’t think her bad reviews are just “hating” its the fact that real actresses work hard and bust their asses for years but then here comes Bey who is clearly out of her league talking this Oscar shit I mean damn Angela B. don’t even have a damn Oscar what freaking nerve!!!!!

I think from this small clip she did good. I would have to see the whole movie to say if she did bad or not. Some of this people judge without seeing anything. I think she came a long way from austin power’s cause MAN the acting is bad in that. I think she did good in Dream girls. Better than JHud….I personaly don’t think J-hud can act. But that is another topic. I love her suit in the pics, every woman needs a good suit.

^^Well, Halle Berry claimed she wanted a Grammy after she won the Oscar. I didn’t see anyone jumping down her throat about that. Jennifer Hudson won one on her first try. I didn’t see anyone up in arms over her winning one before the likes of Angela Bassett or Will Smith. IMO, Jennifer didn’t deserve her award. Her performance was good but not great. Besides had she not been in the Supporting Actress category (when she was clearly the star and lead actress), she would have definitely loss to Helen Mirren. Thus, marketing Beyonce as the star of the film benefitted Jennifer.

There is nothing wrong with Beyonce being ambitious. How long ago was it exactly that she said she wanted to win an Oscar before 30? She has stated many times that she believes she still has a long way to go. She has done everything in music. Why not try acting? I don’t see anyone downing Alicia Keys for trying her hand at acting.

I hope Beyonce continues to act and improve just to prove all her naysayers wrong. Some people are sad to want this girl to give up her dreams. Here is a suggestion: If you don’t like her acting, don’t watch it, don’t support it. It’s just that simple.

And Beyonce’s album actually sold 482,000 not 241,000 like someone claimed. Each double disc counted as 1. It doesn’t satisfy the qualifications of a standard double disc. SMH. Anything to bring this chick down. Sad.

First of all, Beyonce and her dad are Executive Producers of the movie which means she wasn’t cast for the part, they paid for her to be the lead role of this movie. Wow. It is amazing to read all of the hateful remarks on this site. A site that is meant for black entertainment at that. It is just crazy to me how we tear our own down like this. We even have people wishing the best for Angelina, naming Meryl, and other white actresses, simply to down Beyonce. That’s just crazy, because you don’t see this anywhere else. Regardless if you like Beyonce’s singing or not…though I believe she did WONDERFUL in this clip, it is a shame the way you tear her down so. Believe it or not, singing and voice interpretation is a major part of acting, and conveying a message, so for her to powerfully portray Etta songs is a big deal, just ask any musical theatre major, or critic. Instead of giving a black woman praise for realizing her Dreams, and setting major goals for herself, you laugh at her and tear her down. You go and find the worst reviews possible (ignoring all of the positive ones, that are in great number), just to say “I told you so Beyonce”. I would hate to see how you are in real life towards friends, because this is DISGUSTING. She is blessed to be able to realize her dreams, and to pursue acting because this truly comes from her heart, regardless if you want to see the movie. Imagine if this were you up here and someone were tearing you down, and ripping you to pieces, without even seeing your whole interpretation of the role, ignoring the positive about you, and WAITING for your downfall. It wouldn’t be that funny then.

All of Beyonce’s costars have PRAISED her work. It’s a shame that instead of uplifting our own, we continue to tear them down. Instead lifting up other races because it’s meant for them to be that high. It’s meant for them to get Oscars even as little kids…because that’s who it’s for. How is it laughable that Beyonce would want one by 30, even when the youngest in Hollywood was barely a preteen when they won an Oscar. Why is it funny when there have been white actresses to win Supporting nods being in a movie less than ten minutes? But it’s funny when someone who is a black singer wants to realize their dreams and put hardwork into a role. It’s funny that they would love to be rewarded for their work?? We have got to do better, because it’s truly sickening the way some of you act. It takes more energy to HATE than to LOVE, or wish someone the best. It’s a shame, and I would think that on Concreteloop people would have a different outlook.

God Bless Beyonce in everything that she wishes to pursue. More people should want to realize their Dreams and push for the stars, and to reach the top. REGARDLESS of who tells them otherwise. Think about it people.

Also take note of this. Some of you are talking about how Beyonce took roles from black actresses and is doing a disservice to those in Hollywood. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? You can’t be. Yes Beyonce Executive Produced the movie, which is a big deal. The producers of the movie FINANCE the film, allowing the story to be made, because of the huge financial undertaking of creating a Hollywood film. Beyonce made way for so many black actors and actresses to take part in this film, along with other producers. Also there is a BLACK DIRECTOR Darnell Martin, who is making this film. This give a black director spotlight, in a Hollywood that is ruled by WHITE MALE directors. This is amazing for a black woman to be able to direct a movie of this large magnitude. Not only that white folk have been financing their own movies, helping out there daughters, sons, mothers for years, but when black people finance movies, and help out other blacks it’s a major problem. Because it’s Beyonce. Other major stars have produced their movies as well. Including the Angelinas, Brads, and Meryls. Without producing the movie can’t be made.

The movie Cadillac Records is a great way to show the historic nature of Chess Records and what it meant to the music industry as a whole. A lot of people don’t know about this story, and the fact that all of these wonderful actors and actresses are able to showcase their talents is an amazing thing. People get mad at Beyonce, but then it’s ok for Gabrielle Union to be in dozens of movies that you claim other black actresses could have, even when she had no formal training in acting before starting, just as Beyonce. I don’t hear you up here complaining about how the Brads and Angelina’s garner a lot of major movie roles, but Suzie Q from Julliard can’t break into a major role. It’s about star power either way, so why hate on Beyonce for being able to get cast in a movie, by working hard and proving she should be there. Why hate on our own? But I can’t hate on her or other actors, because they are doing what they love to do, in order to make their way in this world. I applaud the Beyonce’s, Gabby’s, and Darnell Martin’s of this world, for realizing their dreams, and portraying blacks, positively in Hollywood. The more we support us, and movies like these we will continue to see more black films in Hollywood greenlighted. Without support these stories will be left untold.

I hope I added logic in this thread, because in the midst of hating, others clearly have forgotten the historic nature of this film. God Bless Beyonce, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Columbus Short, Adrian Brody, Mos Def, Darnell Martin, and the hundreds of others who were able to work on this movie, make bread for themselves and their families, and who were able to realize their dreams. I will support this film on Dec. 5th, and others should to.

Stop the Hate in 08!!

I think that people will never get to see beyonce the actress if she keeps doing roles in which she sings…..one thing that is kinda annoying is her voice….and she cant seem to shake that country twang she got…..her acting im sure will get better and better and she gets older and learns more …but as of right now. its the same watery eye….look…oscar…no….they give her too much credit for delivering great vocals in a role and not for the actual acting in the films….so i was expecting an actual clip of just plain ol acting…but it seens like we wont be gettin any of those anytime soon because they only prove that her acting is mediocre….and nothing to write home about….i love b, but the sooner she releases a good movie without singing in it at all or even a song on a soundtrack the better and faster people will look at her as a actor…..

Columbus Short gets some amusing moments as volatile harmonica player Little Walter, but Gabrielle Union gets too little to do as Waters’ initially supportive but ultimately put-upon wife (yet another cliche in this type of movie, for those of you keeping score at home).

And Beyonce Knowles doesn’t seem to have splurged on acting lessons since her wooden turn in “Dreamgirls.” From the second she enters the film as the tempestuous James, you want to see her sing “At Last,” then get out. No amount of wigs and padding can transform her.

@376, Kanye is a mess, i’m about to sign a petition for him to shut up. He probably trying to make up for what he said about Rihanna making Beyonce step her game up. Somethings fishy. Also how can Beyonce be better than Tina, when all Bey’s crazy performances mimic Tina.

I am tired of Kanye West always talking, if he wants to change the world he should start singing songs that make a difference in people’s lives not “heartless”. I have never seen an artist give himself so much props.

How can Beyonce be better than the original. Clearly a blind man can see she jacked Tina, Diana, J-LO, Britney, Rhianna, Kyle M. ( she had the glove first), Janet and Michael at last Britney notes that she likes things about Janet. I have seen the before and after pictures of Beyonce jacking other artists. I love CL but what I like about other blogs is that they post the good and the bad about entertainers. CL rarely post the bad things about Kanye or Beyonce I know Angel is one of the biggest fans of Kanye but he is not perfect and neither is Beyonce.

I’ve read several bad reviews of Beyonce’s acting this morning. Well, three to be exact. And I’d have to say I agree with them. So that’s my answer to the question, CL. As for Kanye supposedly saying she’s better than Tina lol That’s like saying eggs are too good to come from dirty chickens. Kanye is seriously trying to make up for that Rihanna statement…the funny thing is he didn’t even have to make it. I’ve got this crazy idea that he likes to boost people up who are inferior to him (musically) so as to secure his own standing as one of the more artistic black acts right now… He’s got a habit of doing it…

I think we have pretty much come to the concensus that Beyonce cannot act. Its okay, not everyone is meant to do everything. What would help her longevity would be to perfect her song writing skills and stick to singing and dancing. Really. Over extending yourself to every area of the industry leads to watered down crap and its a slap in the face to the real actors and actresses out there. back in the days you needed to be a triple threat (sing, dance, act) but the difference was you came up doing ALL THREE in the movies. You didnt sing, decide to dance and then move on to acting. you honed your craft evenly and it worked out better in the end. To fix your eyes on a prize like an Oscar without seriously working on your acting is disrespectful to the ones who been puttin in their dues since day one. Do an indie film, some plays. Show me Beyonce in a broadway musical and THEN I’ll believe she can truly act (3 or 4 shows a day, 5 nights out the week for 2 months+ is no joke!). Until then I’ll respect her as a singer/entertainer but she holds no weight when it comes to her acting chops. None.

Mos Def on the other hand? I’ll plunk down my $10.50 to see him play Chuck Berry in a heartbeat. THATS a distinguished actor right there.

I will like to say that I love Beyonce, I believe that she is a great performer and singer. Acting is not her thing but thats ok. We as a whole has allowed society to look pass all of the other blacks actress that can do a better job than B. I feel that she took that and ran with it because we let what the world thinks is beautiful dictate what we watch, what we do, what we pay for and so on. We have made these stars famous, blew up their heads and so they think that they can dabble in anything and we will buy it, and we do. I don’t hate on the girl, I listen to her music but never watch her movies because I know she can;t act. So why waste my money.. I saw Dreamgils only because JHud was in it. Trust, B is a beautiful girl but when was the last time you saw a really good actress on TV who was ugly, thats because society won’t let it. We have to teach the new genaration that beauty is within or else we are gonna be filled with a world of low self -esteemed children. So I am not hating on B, hell you get in where you fit in but I would like for people to know that we have to change the way we think and look at ourselves, love what we have, and if you want what she has then go out and get it.

All this talk about whether Beyonce should get an Oscar or not while Jeffrey Wright is not even mentioned. Beyonce purchased this movie with Jay-Z’s money; as executive producer, naturally, she would put herself in a role that she thinks will snag an Oscar because she has admitted that she wants one so badly. But Jeffrey Wright is the an actor that everyone should be talking about because Wright has played so many, many disparate characters believably and perfectly. He was Martin Luther King; he was Basquiat; he was the “Spanish” guy in Shaft; he was in the recent James Bond thriller and countless others where he always excelled. Why he never received an Oscar or was even nominated is beyond me. I wish there was as much talk about him instead of Beyonce so that, maybe, just this once, the Academy would take note and think positively about him. I agree with the previous post that said that if Beyonce wins an Oscar, the Academy should be ashamed of itself because there are far too many black actors and actresses who never received this award and now, just because Beyonce or Sasha Fierce or whoever she is this week has decided that she wants this award that it should automatically be given to her. Instead, Beyonce should spend her Oscar publicity money on some grammar lessons and elocution/diction sessions . Public speaking is not her forte and it pains me to listen to her being interviewed on any talk show. Lastly, this has nothing to do with any of the above but her sister, Solange, who sings beautifully and has a fantastic album, still grates my nerves by pushing herself into a recent hair commercial with Beyonce. Why are they trying so hard to push both Beyonce and Solange down our throats? Yes, Solange’s singing is fine but do we HAVE to see her in commercials for hair products that neither she nor Beyonce seem to have any use for.

It’s ashame how many people are on here pushing for beyonce to receive an Oscar. I think its’ because people dont really realize what the Oscars are for. You cannot continue to play singers and think its Oscar worthy. People are suprised Beyonce did a good job in this movie(havent seen it but)she played this role many of times. She’s always a singer. Golden, you better preach. By Beyonce helping to executive produce this movie, we got to see Jeffrey Wright in one of his few leading roles. We got to see Columbus Short and Gabrielle Union have substantial supporting dramatic roles. We got to see Eamonn Walker and Mos Def showcase their talents. A black female director Darnell Martin was able to helm a major studio release. We got a story about black history and how the blues help create rock-and-roll, R&B and hip hop.

Just so you know Beyonce has had to audtion for all her movies roles prior to this one, maybe with the exception of Pink Panther. Darnell only wanted Beyonce to play the Etta role, and she wrote it with Beyonce in mind. So by Beyonce helping to produce this movie, she help a lot of black talent in front and behind the camera get work.

Beyonce was like 18 when she said that she wanted to win an Oscar by 30. She said it once, and she said that she know that she might not get one. But it was just a goal. When did it become a bad thing to have goals in your life. Please I’ve heard plenty of actors and actresses saying that they dreamed about what it would be like to win an Oscar one day. So anybody that pursues that profession wants to win that award. That’s a lie that every actor and actress have had extensive training. So do and some don’t. A lot of the more famous actors and actresses haven’t had that much formal training like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Will Smith, Keira Knightley, etc….They’ve gotten better by doing a lot of movies. That’s their training ground. Beyonce has only did 5 movies so far, that’s not a lot of movies. She seems to care about acting, and she puts a serious effort behind it. I personally feel that she’s a good actress, and she’s going to keep working to hone her abilities even more.

See some black people got a screwed up mentality. We shouldn’t be rooting against our own. We should be supportive in each other endeavors. We got enough of people of other races rooting against us and trying to suppress us from achieving.

Some of you up here praising white actresses like Angelina Jolie. Talking about how she was so great in Girl Interrupted, when she was playing somebody with a mental illness. Back then, she was crazy french-kissing her brother and walking around with vials of blood around her neck. Maybe it wasn’t hard for her to play a crazy woman based on her antics. Oh wow, how many times has she played a tough woman in movies, yet you don’t care about her stretching herself in every role.

I guess some of you agree with how she stole another woman’s husband. I don’t see you all questioning her morals, yet you’ve the nerve to call Beyonce some nasty names.

If black people don’t stop with this crab-in-the-barrel mentality we are going to have a hard time progressing in this society, and every group in society is going to past us by because we’re too busy focusing on how to tear each other down.

Some black people make me ashame at how we hate on one another when we should be uplfitiing one another. I thought the movie was superb. I really felt that Beyonce, Jeffrey and Columbus deserve Oscar nominations. Yet the media is so busy pumping up Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, Nixon/Frost, etc…The excellent movie Cadillac Records gets basically ignored.

I know some of you were talking about Dreamgirls wasn’t all that great, but do you really think Little Miss Sunshine was better and deserved the Best Picture nod more? White people and others will surely look out for themselves. We better get on our game.

406.

Lena

Saturday, December 27, 2008 /

Beyonce is a good actress. She just needs the right role for her acting to come through. Because it’s more than about acting, you need a good part and good direction. I think that was nonsense Beyonce got upstaged by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. Beyonce played the role that she was given, and she was a very good Deena.

Effie White is the lead character in Dreamgirls’ broadway play and movie, and Jennifer got to shine more in the movie because of that. Also, the fact that she had the most memorable song from the original play.

But look at any of Beyonce’s earlier roles like Carmen, Goldmember and The Fighting Temptations she works to hold up her part of the bargain as an actress. She doesn’t try to skate by.

Beyonce is contnuing to blossom as an actress, and she was remarkable as Etta.

I really like Beyonce singing and acting, I really think she did a great job in the movie Fighting Temp, Carmen, etc…..and Yes!!!! the girl can sing I think with more time she can become a great actress. I give her credit because she does not give up on her dreams no matter what people say…….She is making it happen and I believe that she is going to be playing in a lot more movies. ……..And I do not know people keep talking about her wigs and her pieces……Performer have been wearing wigs wig from back in the day like the Supremes, and many other groups, they do not have time to keep doing their hair for every show…..and not for nothing she is not the only performer wearing a hair pieces……their are performer in every race black, white, etc. that are wearing hair pieces on a regular that is what the entertainment business do. And not for nothing she be rocking her wigs/hair pieces, that girl is so pretty that anything she wear on her hear is going to look beautiful………..And to all women out there if you want to wear a wig/hair piece and it make you look good and feel, hell wear it….:) GOD BLESS BEYONCE FOR BEING A YOUNG UP COMING SISTER THAT IS DOING THE DAM THING
