♫ ALBUM REVIEW: BRANDY - HUMAN

Monday, December 8, 2008

brandy1.jpg

Brandy, who has been on hiatus for four years, is finally releasing her new album, Human on Tuesday, December 9th via Epic Records.

LISTEN UP:
♫ BRANDY - PIANO MAN
♫ BRANDY - A CAPELLA (SOMETHING’S MISSING)
♫ BRANDY - 1ST & LOVE

Brandy has been a muse for two of the most amazing producers of our time, so when it was announced that she was making a splash back onto the scene with a new album, I was pleasantly surprised. Her first single, “♫ Right Here (Departed)” dropped in August and featured Brandy and her signature vocals, but I had to admit that I was a little concerned about the direction of the song and the overall album.

I was eager to hear more from the project, especially to find that Brandy was reuniting with long time friend and collaborator, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Their chemistry is absolutely undeniable, which is why he took the reigns on more than half of the album this time around (Brandy hadn’t worked with Rodney since Full Moon in 2002). Although a couple of tracks from Toby Gad (on the titled track, “Human”), and Surf Club’s Hit Boy (”1st & Love”) are sprinkled throughout the album, Brandy confidently shows her musical ear and the importance of cohesion on an album.

Human, Brandy’s fifth studio album, is full of mid-tempos that really display Brandy’s ability vocally. I think that most of the material was crafted for Brandy to flex her vocal muscles, and finds her at her most open and free. Coming from Afrodisiac, I was expecting some more up-tempo tracks, and admittedly, at first, Human dragged a bit for me, but the pace of the album has surely caught up with me after playing it a few more times. What really rings is the fact that Brandy recorded material that was really true for her. This album is a testament to all that she’s been through over the past few years, and I respect that about her.

Check out this video of the making of Human!

My favorite tracks include the beautiful “A Capella (Something’s Missing),” which is nothing short of a masterpiece (Brandy uses her voice as in instrument and is backed by no track, just her own pipes), the album’s opening cut, “The Definition,” as well as “Piano Man,” “Shattered Heart,” and of course, the album’s closing track, the Natasha Bedingfield-assisted “Fall.”

Brandy definitely marks a lot of points in my life that I can distinctly remember. I always loved Brandy’s first album - some of those first songs that Brandy recorded were classics. Then, with her second album, Never Say Never, I remember that being the first album my mom sent me while I was away at summer camp. 2002’s Full Moon has some of the most feel-good songs on it, and Afrodisiac brings me back to the summer when I moved into my first apartment. Brandy has one of the most amazing voices, vocal arrangements and adlibs of any artist of our time. Her voice just does something to me; it transcends barriers.

I have the album, and it is great! My favorites are “The Definition”, “Piano Man”, “Camouflage”, “Human”, and of course fall. I like it because it shows growth, maturity, and you can tell she was not looking for a whats hot sound. That is what is missing from RnB, true music and true artist. She needs no extras, and shaking and taking off all her clothes (lol) to sell music and pick up fans. I love Brandy!

Brandy’s best album was the one w/ Angel in Disguise on it, Sitting on top of the world, etc. I hope this album is like that one and then I’ll buy it.

Wow Brian is def a FAN! But I can’t hate, I am too. I will def support the project.
It took me a while to warm up to Brandy actually, but I def support her as an artist nowadays.

And to #5, that comment is SO not necessary.

I think this will be a good album. If you watch the video you will understand that Brandy is not trying to put out something to make you go to the club and dance. She is putting out something that you can relate to and hear it 5 years from now and still like the song. The is what is wrong with music today it is just made for that particular time. You cannot picture hearing these songs 5 years from now and liking it. It is just something to make you dance or shake your head in the car. People do not even listen to the voice or the words anymore. I am just glad that Brandy stayed true to the type of music that she desired to put out and she was not just concerned about how many units she sells, but about putting music out there that she can be proud of. I will be getting a copy tomorrow.

@Kahlil, she’ll need something else to get the sales through the roof, we are living in hard times, though all of us might not be effected.

Loving her new cd…Brandy always delivers, whether the public catches on or not. I just love that she has something to say that is worth hearing. Her songs have real meaning to them and that’s what a true artist is, IMO. I got the bootleg, but I will definitely be getting a real copy tomorrow!!! Gotta support great artists or we will be forever subjected to the mediocrity that is so abundant these days!

Great review, Brian. I completely agree with you when you spoke on Brandy being one of the best vocalist of our time; that’s undeniable. Although “Human” is a cohesive album and an overall “good” album, it leaves me a little cold in the subject department. I know there are only so many things you can talk about in any song but, for me, “Human” drowned me in love. With songs like “Warm it up” (With Love), “The Definition” (which was previously titled “The Definition Of Love”) and “1st & Love”, I found myself wanting a little more as far as the content. Then too, “Human” is supposed to be a representation of Brandy’s life over the past few years so, I assume that’s where she was in her life. Still, she could’ve substituted a few of those “love” songs with an uptempo or two just to get it some variety.

Brian,
Thanks for this very honest review….I love human and Brandy and have for about the last 15 years. I love her for putting out honest music. And much like you, Her albums have taken me through pivital moments in my young life. HUMAN if nothing else is simply a SOLID “BRANDY” album. And again i agree that ‘Her voice just does something to me; it transcends barriers!’ Only a chosen few of us really get that….but thats b/c we’re special ;-)

It’s does seem to drag a bit, I needed some up-tempo. I honest liked Afrodisiac better (that album was sooooooooooo good), but none the less Brandy is a singer and I can’t wait to her the entire album. Good job B-rocka

This album is great. I really love the songs especially Right Here(Departed). At first I wasn’t really feeling the song. Then something tragic happened in my life and the song speaks to me. What she says in that song is the same thing the person who passed would have said to me. I am also feeling Piano Man and Warm It Up With Love. I will be buying this album.

I like the album, I just recently listened to it. Thank God for album previews these days you know. But this cd will remind how pleasant it was to hear her soft voice on a long drive home. There are a lot of slow songs on the album, which can be a bit of a drag for some. But given what she has been through within the past few years, that can pass. All of her songs are personal and heartfelt, which can be hard to find in a lot of pop/r&b albums these days. Key tracks are “Human,” and “Don’t Shatter My Heart.” If you still have a heart for those 90s R&B artists, you won’t be disappointed with Brandy. Go cop it yo!

Thanks to the internet and albums being leaked I had this album now for like 3 weeks and it’s the bomb i mean the music may not be all that………but unlike Beyonce (with her wack as album!) I can deal with Brandy with slow joins like the ones on this album because her voice takes you away from listening to her music. Her vocals and how the way she arrange them on this album is OFF THE FRIGGIN’ HOOK! I love it…….i wasn’t too crazy about it when i first heard it but after a few times listening i fell in love. Yes kill the game Brandy………….show Ms. Knowles how REAL singing is suppose to be done and not over sanged! Copp this album! Please everyone! You’ll hear what i’m talking about!

Re: No, 42

Actually, in terms of vocal styling and technique you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that is as vocally versatile as Brandy.

The problem is, that we have been conditioned (esp. African Americans) to believe that the best singers are those with the most octave range. But there is a whole host of great singers that would not fit that bill. In terms of rifting, vocal texture, and being able to sing several genre’s yet remain unique — Brandy stands in that category all alone.

This Sound is Exactly what Brandy was going for. She has something to sing about her life has been full of turmoil the last couple of years and its her ReIntroduction back on the music scene. After all she has dealt with she would’nt try and come back out with a Club Banga, cuz She’s much 2 sincere 4 that. Yall should save some of those Xpectations 4 the next album. Anbody that is familiar with Brandy and her music could tell you that She NEVER repeats sounds from a previous album, she actually shows growth. You get a different Brandy on each album, but its really her showing her versatility as an artist.

Couldn’t agree more. Brandy is definitely one of THE best vocalists of our time. I feel vocally she is the MOST creative singer out there.. yes..even over Beyonce or Christina.
She has vocal creativity like NO other.
I have always loved Brandy.. never been a stan, but I can definitely appreciate her undeniable talent.
