MICHELLE OBAMA’S INAUGURAL GOWN - WHAT WILL SHE WEAR?

Monday, December 8, 2008

So many choices yet, so little time. With the biggest event of 2009 happening next month, Michelle Obama has a tough decision to make before she evens moves to the White House - what will she wear at the historical Inaugural ball? (President elect Barack Obama already made his…he’ll be wearing a Hart Schaffner Marx tuxedo).

Her decision maybe a bit harder since designers from left to right have been sketching up ideas for the future first lady. Everyone from Marc Jacobs, Oscar De La Renta, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Chanel have presented WWD.com with their gown ideas. Check out a couple of the sketches and take your pick for Mrs. Obama…what do you think she should wear?

Wow, I’m torn between Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera (not Caroline).

Props to Oscar de la Renta for including the girls in his sketches. I am disappointed in Tracy Reese’s design.

Definitely the black Chanel dress..classic and regal just like the Michelle.

She should contact Barack’s family in Kenya and have an African designer sketch her gown with cultural significance. After all…its only a dress for one night that someone will make a fortune off of. May as well give someone new a break and deflect all the fashion attention away from Euro ‘ish!

On second thought, I love the Monique Lhuillier dress for the occasion.

@ # 13 (Meat) - I have to disagree. The last thing Michelle needs to do is show up in something reminiscent of kente cloth. I do, however, agree with your suggestion of her giving a new designer a chance to showcase their work (much like Halle did at the Oscars). But then again, after viewing all 40 sketches, the competition is stiff and may be too much for a newbie. In the end, I’m sure she’ll make the right choice.

These are the nicest ones on here!!

Here’s the breakdown!!
CHRISTIAN LACROIX 1 : She’s the future lady, not a drag queen
CHRISTIAN LACROIX 2: The sketches are more realistic given the fact that the inauguration will be held outside, and she sure won’t be freezing her ass out in the cold. Adore the knee lenght blue coat with the accent of fur on the arms and collar.
BETSEY JOHNSON: Do not hate!!! It’s betsey and that’s what she does.
ZAC POSEN: Zac has more of a youthful vibe. Hence Rihanna always wearing his designs. Maybe for the girls but not suitable for the future first lady.
RACHEL ROY: Rachel has great individual pieces, but lacks fullgown experience.
NICOLE MILLER: Love Nicole Miller and love the dress and will probably be the chosen one, given the garment history of michelle. She loves colours and simplicity.
RODARTE: The house just had an amazing s/s 09 line and this sketch is wonderful. I would love for michelle and the girls to walk down in matching dresses. How cute!!!
TRACY REESE: The dress looks like it’s from a cheap department/retail store.

@ #20. (Big M) - I’m sure that there are African designers who understand the subtilties of American/Euro frail. “Kente cloth” is only a fragment of the fashion choices in Kenya and Nigeria. Let’s face it…America voted for CHANGE, but so far, all we’ve gotten is more of the Clintons and Kennedy’s! Real change should spur fashion markets throughout the world rather than just China, Japan and Italy.

Where’s the BOLD change? The designers who have set the standards, have also manipulated it! After all, the clothes don’t make the woman, the woman makes the clothes. Who said the Obama’s have to be transparent when it comes to culture? Why can’t they embrace the love of Africa the way that past first families have embraced St. Patrick, cornbeef and kilts?

Okay, I give up…you’re correct! America is: Chanel, Marc Jacob, Nike, Disney, Sony, Wal Mart, Timberlakes, Sean John, Rocawear, Baby Phat, Bud and Coors…CNN, NBC, Microsoft, Guess, Louis Vuitton, Polo, Cambridge, Levi and Oscar De La Renta. All of our heros.

My favorite is a tie b/w the Monique Lhillier gown and the Diane Von Furstenburg. Close third is Michael Kors. If she is feeling Couture, she should definitely do the Christian Lacroix! Either way, the First Lady is going to be fierce!

Monday, December 8, 2008 /

This is a dress overload, I like Marc Jacobs and possibly Rachel Roy dress. The other dresses are way over the top!

56.

Lis

Monday, December 8, 2008 /

My take, is that she will go timeless, but elegant. Which is that of either, Oscar, Chanel, Herrera or even Badgley Miscka. Lacroix is too “diva”, Jacobs and Von Furstenberg are too dynamic enough and Zac Posen is too about the design of the DRESS and couture-Michelle will get lost in that look. Kors, Monique and Tahari are more fitting for Oscars’. Rachel Roy’s is nice, but more fitting for stiff, socialite cocktail parties. Tracey’s piece would be a great choice for Michelle too, plus with her being an upcomiing black designer, this would put her on the map the way Rachel Roy did on Oprah.

I’m sure Michelle will still look fabulous, and I can’t wait! *

You guys have a point, now that I think about it. I think Oscar is probably the best choice since someone over there DID take the time to consider how the girls with coordinate with Mom’s look. Most of the others convey, “lead singer” looks, or A-list actress.

64.

Virginia Slimm

Monday, December 8, 2008 /

I’m mad at some of these gowns for being so “extra” looking…but I’m even more mad at the way they’re trying to draw this women’s face!! WTF was Betsy Johnson, Christian Lacroix and Zac Posen thinking?? LMAO! All 3 of those would be OUT if I was her.

66.

@ #57. (Lis) - Cornrows and kente garb are such a limited expression of African fashion. I wish I could take some of y’all to visit the homeland so you could see first hand for yourselves and not just rely on what you’ve seen through American media.

I hope we don’t spend the next eight years being afraid to rock the boat of the past 43 presidents. [43 X 8 = 344 years.] That’s almost five generations and we’re just going to try and blend in!

67.

Meat

Phillyfashionista - LMAO, you are so right about the faces! They made her look like “Evil Sheera” from the southside. Oscar De La Renta is the only one who got it right or at least came close! I don’t mind the softer images, but Lacroix must have used one of the Saturday Night Live artist. hehe!

@Meat,

I’m waving my fist-pick in the air for you! lol

First of all, you “pro-black” types kill me! This is about to become an iconic moment for whatever she chooses and it’s not about reppin’ the motherland. Also, FYI, I’ve been to East Africa TWICE and I live in a city where Africans are not only prevalent, but just as diverse as well. Michelle doesn’t need to be draped head-to-toe in native garb to show just how culturally-conscious she is. She’s our First Lady, not just blacks but for ALL AMERICANS. As in the words of Michael Kor’s from Project Runway, “LIGHTEN UP, IT’S JUST FASHION!!!!!!” lol

I see Philly and I share some of the same views. I’ve checked out the other sketches on the WWD site also. Her face in some of the sketches ARE jacked-up! lol

I’m still almost appauled at Betsey still. Why not just stick Michelle in a tutu and have her turn a cartwheel after they walk across the stage. Also, I very surprised to not see any contributions from another fave designer of mine, Christian Dior……well, John Galliano. Maybe he’s busy with his Fall 2010 collection to help. :)

@Lis,

You must have been in East Africa back in the 50s, because “the motherland” is reppin more than native garb. BTW, what’s wrong with cultural-conscious! You “anti-cultrual” types give me the blues. And, just because Atlanta is running over with Africans, don’t think that you have the market cornered on deversity. People of color help put the Obamas in the white house, just like we did with the Clintons and Carters. If “it’s just fashion”, let’s spread the wealth. And, in the words of Slanky Payne from the Projects, “EUROPEANS AIN’T THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN STITCH AND HEM!!!!!” lol!

Rev Wright is a good man who is a product of his environment and the 1960’s, where speaking out against the system was the norm for black and white people.

He is a hero for speaking the truth, but white rascist who are desperate to have the truth silenced him, and did their best to make him look ridiculous. they want their black leaders to totally disown their own people before they will give them power. Barack should have the power to address many problems in the black community, as president. By disassociating himself it made white rascist feel comfortable enought with him that he WOULD BE THEIR PRESIDENT and voted for him as a reward. Which means that they expect Barack to do for EVERYONE EXCEPT BLACK PEOPLE. AND THAT WE SHOULD HAVE TAXATION WITH NO REPRESENTATION.

LOOK AT YOUR TAX BILLS RECEIPTS FOR EVERYTHING YOU BUY FROM FOOD, TO CLOTHING, TO CARS TO HOUSES, AND ALL THE LICENSES/REGISTRATION FEES YOU PAY. ALL OF THAT MONEY SHOULD BE IN YOUR OWN POCKET IF THE GOVT ISN’T GOING TO GIVE YOU HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT. THAT’S WHY WE PAY TAXES. UNFORTUNATELY A GOOD AMOUNT OF OUR TAX DOLLARS GO TO PAY HOOKERS, LIMOS, PLANES, CORPORATE WELFARE AND TO THE RICH. MOST OF IT GOES TO THEM.

TIME WILL TELL IF BARACK WILL REACH DOWN AND HELP THE MOST HURTING PEOPLE IN THE LAND - BLACK PEOPLE. WE VOTED HIM IN AND WE CAN VOTE HIM OUT.

When you do your 1040 tax return notice how much federal and state taxes are taken out of your check. It is enormous. Then just sit down and add up all the taxes you paid since you been working and shopping, etc. When you buy a car you pay about $800 to $1000 in taxes just for that. Every time you spend $100 at the grocery store shopping you pay the govt $7. If you make $40,000/year and own a home, chances are you pay about $10,000 or more every year in taxes. Over a 10 year period when the stock market was good, if you had invested $10,000 for 10 years you might be close to being a millionaire. Instead you give your money to the govt and when you ask for help when you get laid off they make you feel like a freeloader!!!! WAKE UP!

If blacks aren’t going to get govt help when we need it, WE SHOULD REFUSE TO PAY THESE TAXES.

I WANT MY TAXES TO GO TO HELP MY BLACK PEOPLE, AND MYSELF IF I NEED IT.

Definately the Oscar de la Renta one! It’s so elegant, yet not too over the top. And judging by Michelle’s style of clothing, I’m sure that’s what she’ll go with. The kids look cute in that one too.

Marc Jacobs, Nicole Miller, Diane Von, Michael Kors, Monique Lhuillier, Elie and Badgley could all work but I’m loving the Oscar De La Renta gown (nice sketch too) but if it’s gonna be really cold then the white Chanel Suit would be a lovely choice also. The Christian Lacroix gowns are too over the top, not feeling them.

I like the Monique Lhuillier design.

It manages to be dramatic and encompass the grandeur associated with a high society ball, but it still manages to portray an elegant and clean aesthetic.

I like the fact that two of the designers on here are black. Rachel Roy (Dame Dash’s wife) I just finished viewing her Spring 09 collection….It’s nice but to pricey and she is not up there yet…secondly Tracy Reese, in which I am not feeling her designs at all. However, it would be nice if she went with an American Designer, but both of my picks are unfortunately Haute Couture, Christain Lacroix, but if she went all out american, then Marc Jacobs would be the “American” choice first up and then Oscar De La Renta, because of the lovely designs for the girls!.

Speaking of Michelle Obama and her girls –what do suppose she’d do if it were her girls that a white social studies teacher bound bu their hands and feet and then told them to crawl on the floor? That is exactly what happened to two 13-year-old 7th graders in White Plains, N.Y. The teacher was conducting a history lesson on American slaves and bound the girls with duct tape. I am amazed at how many reporters, columnists and bloggers have gone out of their way to protect the teacher, commenting that she just could not have meant any racism, that she must have had good intentions, she was just naive and misled in this particular lesson on slavery. Oh Puleeze!

I believe there was indeed racism, but even if there was not intended racism, this teacher should be fired for her stupidity! How could any responsible adult, let alone a teacher with whom we entrust our children, not realize that this was inapproprite and hurtful. If I had a child in her classroom, I would yank her out of there until the teacher was fired and replaced. And if the teacher is merely moved to another school, it will not be acceptable. That’s what the Catholic Church has done for decades — move pedophile priests to new parishes, only to defile more children.

Ethic Soup blog has a good article on this subject. To read and comment, go to:

Michelle not from Kenya, so I don’t know about the African look, although if it’s done right it COULD look like something. For the Euros, I’ll go with Chanel, the Mischka dude, or maybe Oscan De La Renta, although Oscar’s dress has a bit too much clevage for this type of event. My favorite is the Chanel. It would look awesome on her.

Rachel Roy’s design sucks…so plain. I could’ve drawn that myself.

120. KYS,

The suggestion is that she get sketches from other parts of the world. Kenya just happens to be where her husband’s father was born. A strong connection to Africa! As for the “African look”…what exactly is that? I think most of you have no idea about the talented designers in the fashion world beyond Europe. Everything in Africa is not made from Kenta cloth.

I bet you would not want to see her jewelry made in Africa either, when in fact…that’s where most diamonds come from…not Italy! Africa has more to offer that you think and its about time that we stop giving all our money to Coach, Louis, Dune, Chanel, and Prada.

Asians and Mexicans circulated their money many times within their own communities before it goes to Boston, Ohio, and finally to Germany or Europe. Blacks get paid and put their money right back into the hands of the…oppressor. We don’t produce any fashions except when or name is used for marketing purposes. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters all rely on Nike to produce their brands.

I’m sorry, there are already enough Marc Jacob and Chanel gowns showcased from past first ladies. Forget Oscar and Furstenburg. Just look at the last names of all these designers…Herrera, Tahari, Lacroix, Rodarte, LHuiller, Mischka, Renta and Posen! Where’s are the Washingtons, Chinyeres, Okafors, and Jones?

123. HALCYONC,

Here’s my point…! Basically, the manufacture (Reebok) uses Venus’s name to market their product. She, Micheal and Tiger don’t produce the line. Eleven is made by Reebok, so she get a small percentage of the sale.

The person who designs the first ladies gown will reap great benefits…far beyond someone using their name. Anyhow, I don’t claim to know the fashion industry like you ladies, but I know the business world and if you’re not producing…you’re consuming! We’re on the consumer end of everything we use. When will we become producers.

In America, we’re consumers for their food, clothes, homes, cars, insurance, water and power. Everything we need to survive, we buy from someone without Afro- connections. You can buy Chinese food, tacos and pizza in every hood in America. We eat food from other cultures, but they don’t touch ours. We wear their clothes, but our designers can only sketch “GARB”!

@133. HALCYONC,

In a sense…Reebok and Eleven are competitors. They strive for the same market share. Bottomline though, Reebok can’t lose! And, like you said, Venus’s designs aren’t doing well. Just like Michael and Tiger Wood products will never exceed the original Nike gear. Its the same manopoly that Marc Jacob and Chanel’nem have on the fashion world.

At it’s most basic level, looking to Africa may be the only way for black Americans to think outside of the box. Otherwise, we’re sold…hook, line and sinker.

The Kente cloth is from GHANA not Kenya or Nigeria.

Why the fuss over what she wears, focus on the bigger picture people!.Your President is Black!

A Ghanaian Sista

137.

Meat

Wednesday, December 10, 2008 /

@136. Malaika, Is it true a Ghanaian sista can make love all night? lol!

Anyhow Sis, I was not the one who prescribed Kente cloth to Kenya or Nigeria! That was Lis or somebody else. I only wish that Michelle would consider sketches and designs from Africa. From anywhere or anybody of color from the motherland. I know the stereotype on African fashion. It is more than the cultural limitations that most Americans have.

You asked why the fuss? The big fuss is that “change” in the US will be faught on every front. Even though we have a black President, he will be controlled and challenged everytime he or Michelle opens their mouths. You’re right, this is a small matter, so why status quo?

Michelle was all but arrested when she said she was proud of this country for the first time in her life. Before that, I didn’t know pride in the country was a law! She got real quiet after that…for months. Likewise, Jeremiah Wright had to chill from preaching the gospel. America and Europe have a way of manipulating everything.

Now, as a Ghana woman you should know, just because a leader is black, don’t mean he has the peoples interest at heart. And please don’t forget, a black President and First Lady is just a deposit on the cure for America. We still have to discuss the down-payment, principle, interest, closing and insurance…! And, late fees!

Y’all just don’t know how much America has contributed to the world’s problems. Its like Jeremiah said…Naw, Naw, Naw!
