People are going back and forth about the reviews. If you have read a review from last week then it is a bunch of BS. No critics give reviews until the week of the release. So far I haven’t heard any Oscar talks from anybody, but stans, Papa Knowles, and Beyonce. I haven’t seen any critics talk about an Oscar Worthy performance. If you have seen credited critics talk about that then please post the site so I can read the review.

All of the reviews I have read so far have said similar things. They talk about how great the soundtrack is and said Beyonce’s singing is great in the film. They also talk about how great Jeffrey Wright and Mos Def are in the film.

They also say that it seems like Water’s wife (Gabrielle Union’s character) was downplayed in the movie and how she should’ve had a bigger role since Water’s wife cared for his illegitimate child. They were also upset that the other Chess brother was not included in the movie at all when he played a huge part in Chess Records. Lastly they said that it seemed as though this movie was made to only have a big part around Etta James when she didn’t have a huge role in Chess Records besides being an artist and sleeping with the Boss.

Critics gave the directors and producers lackluster reviews because the essence of the story of Chess Records was lost around singing and outshining.

When I tell you Toccara looks a hot mess with that white makeup on and them panty hoes and sandles OMG somebody call the fashion police and have her arrested. Its a crime to look that bad….Now she just looks like a pin up doll.

Bey on the other hand looks amazing as usual with Steve Urkel on her arms..Well at least he got money!

Let’s face it this movie turned from a movie about Chess Records to a vehicle that Beyonce is now using to further her acting career. Heck this isn’t even about Etta James, but about Beyonce playing Etta James. Which is a shame since Ms. James is alive and well and still singing the hell out of her songs. Anyway, the fact that Beyonce is the executive producer translates she helped financed the film. Critics aren’t going to give true honest reviews of Beyonce’s work because basically she help pay for it.

And as much as Gabby gets on my nerves it does suck that a LEADING actress is barely showcased when in fact her character was more relevant to the Chess Records story. Which shows how paying for a film will get you press and recognition.

PS. I love Adrien Brody and his appreciation for the sistas in some of his acting roles…lol

@126, I know right, all credible critics give reviews the week before movie release date. So all the ones before seem like they were orchesterated by the Knowles camp, especially since they seem to focus more on Beyonce although she is not the lead. Same thing happened with DreamGirls.

Did you see the review, that said “you want her to come and sing “At Last” and then after that I was ready for her to leave” I couldn’t stop laughing.
