CL EXCLUSIVE: URSULA ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS - VOL. 3
Tuesday, January 27, 2009

This past September, we had you submit questions to celebrity hair stylist Ursula Stephen. Ursula read your questions and comments - here is part three of our feature with more answers and tips from the stylist…

Just wanna say thank you for your continued support and well wishes! I know its been a while since you’ve heard from me - the past few weeks have been craaazy!!!
As some of you loyal Concreteloop/ASK URSULA readers may already know, I had a fabulous birthday party in NYC. It was an amazing turn out. Great people, music, food, and the vibe was nothing but love! Special thanks to Michelle Williams for hosting, and to FHI Heat, Mizani, and Uptown magazine for sponsoring! Shout out to Melka (Mizani), Krystal Thorpe (Epiphany Agency), Troy Monaco, Toni and the rest of the team - Xtra special thanks to my CL fam for holdin’ me down in 2008.
Then it was off to LA for the AMA’s, which was so much fun and star studded! Bitter sweet, as this is the last award show of 2008 but getting Rihanna ready was pretty exciting! I love how we did a flirty fun look for the red carpet and then flipped it to her edgy style for the performance. Props to her stylist, Mariel Haenn. Who designed that sick bustier!- what’s good!
Then it was back to NY to work this new girl group called Elektrik Red. They are dope! And are definitely not your average. They have great chemistry, they’re edgy, and each one’s style is signifant. Love, love ,love them. They performed for the first time together in NY. The showcase was packed and left the guys standing with their tongues hanging out in disbelief. I wish them all the best, and I am excited to be a part of their project.
BTW: Whoever says dreams don’t come true, is a “hater” (lol)! I was driving down Sunset Blvd. and saw my FIRST Gucci ad featuring Rihanna - I’m really proud of this one! It’s for the GUCCI Tattoo Heart Campaign for UNICEF
A lot of you have been asking about artists choosing shorter styles, and just to comment on noticeable similarities like length; Michelle Williams has a short cut similar to Rihanna’s but Rih’s is styled much edgier with a international rockstar feel, while Michelle’s is sophisticated and cut to fall perfectly accentuating her face and bone structure with longer length bangs.
Before I get to your questions, I just wanted to say that I know I haven’t given product names, however, as a stylist I work with different products and I will suggest them to you based on my personal experience, that doesn’t mean that it will work for you, but I will give you key ingredients to look for. - Ursula…
Q: I recently cut my hair, in hopes of having it grow stronger and more healthy, and it was doing fine until I used a semi-permanent color. It was really cute in the beginning, but now it went from a ruby rage to a goldish-brown and its breaking off extremely bad. I brought some Nubian Silk products but I don’t know if its right for my hair, What do you suggest to get my hair growing and stronger?
A: First, with semi-permanent color they gradually fade with every shampoo, to keep the vibrance of the color, you want to have it redone or change the color. If you decide not to have the color redone, then use a leave-in conditioner that’s creamy and will substitute for the effect that the semi-permanent color had on the hair, which is coating the hair and giving it muscle.
Q: HELP, HELP!!! Hi Ursula, I’m in dire need of help, my hair is extremely damaged. I have very dry, thin, uneven hair, with many split ends. Also my scalp tends to be dry. I’ve tried an array of products with no success. However I’ve noticed that when i do cut my hair it grows back quickly. So, what would you suggest I use, or do?
A: Your hair is uneven and splitting because of the lack of regular trims. To start, get a good trim and remove the excess split ends and then make sure you keep up with trims. Also, invest in a deep conditioner.
Q: I am Black, White, Native American, and Indian, so I have long, thick, very curly hair. I usually use gel and hairspray in the front to slick it down and put it into a ponytail. Then, I use mousse and hairspray on the actual ponytail. By the end of the day, my hair is a lot bigger on the sides and shorter than it had been when I first put the mousse in it. My question to you is how can I ever wear it out if I can hardly wear it in a ponytail without it getting poofy by the end of the day? Thanks!
A: Number one, all the products you mentioned that you use all have alcohol, which is a big no, no especially at the rate you are using them. There are two really great products that are on the market right now, that are great for naturally curly hair, one is Miss Jessie’s, the other is Mixed Chics. Good Luck!
Q: Hi Usula, my name’s Mia and I’m trying to grow my hair longer. I have very curly hair and I’m natural but I was wondering how do you grow your hair longer. I’ve read about putting your hair in buns to make it grow, but do you know if this is true? Also, do you know any no heat styling techniques to get wavy hair? Thank you!
A: To achieve a wavy look with a heat styling tool-take a small section of the hair and using a big barrell curling iron, curl in a spiral motion and pull the curl out before the hair cools with your fingers.
Q: I’m 16 and I’ve been getting my hair chemically relaxed since I was about 4 or 5, once every two or so months. I deep condition and straighten (witha heat protectant spray) about once or twice a week. I have issues with dandruff and shedding and I’m looking for a product or treatment to fix the two. Also, I’m wondering if there’s any way to get a loose wave similar to that of a person with “good” hair without cutting off all my hair or causing extreme damage?
A: A shampoo with peppermint will help with dandruff. It will open up the pores and promote circulation in your scalp. Try Dr. Miracle’s shampoo or Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo.
Thanks to all the readers who submitted questions, and keep checking back for more with Ursula on Concreteloop! Don’t forget to keep submitting, she’s always looking out!

I really love the versatality in Rihanna’s hair. Michelle’s hair is full of life, not boring. Keep up the good work. I’m not a specialist or anything, but I believe the key to good hair is to not put weave on a consistant basis (basically, don’t rely on it) your hair needs to breathe.

I would love to see more sisters giving more information on how sisters should and COULD rock there natural hair…we definately need more images of our sisters rocking there God given tresses, and more info on how to care for our strong thick hair……tooo many magazine covers and images display our sisters in weaves, relaxers and straight hair when majority if not 95% of all African American women have been blessed with kinky/curly hair. Are younger sisters are feeling as if there kinky or curly hair is bad and ugly especially since it is not categorize as beautiful hair. Such folly.
If magazines, commericials and more hairstylist put more effort in time into showing our sisters that Natural hair is beautiful and can be worn versatile without the chemicals and harsh heat applied I believe the epidemic of weaves and relaxers wouldnt be as in HIGH demand as it is today. That is why I congratulate sisters like Carols Daughter and Shelley Davis for promoting natural products for sisters with natural hair.

Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Shampoo IS THE BOMB!!!!!! Ursula hit it on the money with that one! If you have dry scalp, and have dandruff problems, this shampoo is a miracle worker!!!! Man, i’m telling you, it makes your scalp feel so clean and itch free it isn’t even funny! What dandruff? It costs more than like a Head N’ Shoulders, but well worth it! I have very long, thick hair and suffer from dry scalp, and that shampoo is the ish honey!

@Choosey
Im not Ursula but I can sure answer that question for ya….
stop rocking with weaves&relaxers (which are in my opinion not healthy at all for our hair) and allow your natural hair to breathe…and watch how strong beautiful full and healthy your hair takes off with a good regimen and daily care.
Also, a good diet, exercise, vitamins and 8glasses of water a day will help promote strong healthy and yes LONG hair. Alot of our sisters do not believe there hair can grow long but that is completely false, with motivation and patience your hair can truly grow as long as your heart desires.

AT #7, I DEFINITELY FEEL WHAT UR SAYING IN EVERY WAY. HOWEVER, NOT EVERYONE IS THE SAME. MY HAIR IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER. WHEN NOT RELAXED, IT LITERALLY IS LIKE A BRILLO/STEEL WOOL PAD, AND I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! I LITERALLY CANNOT GET A COMB THRU MY HAIR IF IT’S NOT RELAXED, THEREFORE IT’S ALMOST LIKE I NEEEEED A RELAXER!! AND I AGREE WITH WHOEVER SAID UR SCALP NEEDS TO BREATHE…. I FEEL THAT IF I LEAVE IT NATURAL, IT’S SO KINKY THAT HARDLY ANY AIR CAN GET THRU TO MY SCALP. IT’S THAT SERIOUS. BUT I’VE CUT MY HAIR REALLY SHORT & IT’S RELAXED SO I’M DOING GOOD FOR NOW…..
I WANT URSULA TO TALK ABOUT PETROLEUM & MINERAL OIL IN CERTAIN PRODUCTS, CUZ THE PROS & CONS SEEM TO CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT (BUT FOR NOW, I STAY AWAY FROM THEM).

YEAH #9, I HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT THAT SHAMPOO TOO… I’MMA HAVE TO BUY THAT ONE. ALSO, I HEARD THAT IF U BUY NAME-BRAND SHAMPOOS LIKE THAT, YOU SHOULD GO TO AN ACTUAL SALON TO BUY IT, AS OPPOSED TO A DRUG STORE. WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW IS THAT IT COSTS WAYYY LESS TO BUY AT A SALON & IS GUARANTEED TO BE THE REAL INGREDIENTS FROM THE MANUFACTURER WHEREAS THE DRUGSTORE BRAND COULD HAVE TAMPERED WITH & MIGHT NOT BE THE INGREDIENTS U SEE ON THE BOTTLE. SOUNDS CRAZY BUT TRUE.

Hi, you’re thinking you are supposed to run comb through your natural hair like you do when it’s relaxed or straigtened because you have never been taught how to care for natural hair. This was learning curve for me too (natural for 5 years). MOST, I say MOST women with natural hair DO NOT run a comb through it their hair when it is time to style it, and believe me their is NOTHING wrong about that. They comb their hair out when they condition it maybe once or twice a week. Most styles are achieved by finger styling, ect. Their are plenty of prodcuts out there for you no matter how brillo paddish YOU THINK your hair is. Like Ursula said Miss Jessie’s have great products, and there are great natural hair websites that you can learn from, afrobella.com, being one.

@ AMI, NO BOO… NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT RUNNING A COMB THRU UR HAIR LIKE IT’S RELAXED/STRAIGHTENED! THERE OBVIOUSLY IS A DIFFERENCE. BUT WHEN UR HAIR IS SO HARD TO MANAGE THAT U CAN’T EVEN UNTANGLE IT & IT IS LITERALLY IN KNOTS AFTER A REGULAR WASH W/ A GENTLE SHAMPOO, DETANGLER & CONDITIONER, TELL ME WHAT UR SUPPOSED TO DO? PLEASE, I KNOW ALL ABOUT TAKING CARE OF MY HAIR (UNLIKE MANY) & MY HAIR IS HEALTHY & BEAUTIFUL. IT’S VERY THICK & GROWING NICELY SO I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS. I THINK UR MISUNDERSTOOD, THINKING THAT ALL KINKY/AFRICAN HAIR IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME… THEREFORE THINKING NO ONE NEEDS RELAXERS.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT GRADES OF KINKY… NOT ALL BLACK HAIR IS SIMPLY CATEGORIZED IN “GOOD HAIR” & “KINKY HAIR”. I DO, HOWEVER, SEE WHERE WOMEN GO WRONG & OVERDOSE ON THE USE OF CHEMICAL STRAIGHTENERS THOUGH.

um this is not a question more like an oppinion
i think rihanna needs to relax her hair because you can tell the difference between the weave and her natural hair and its not looking hot. Rihanna looks like a HAM and i think you should help her work on her hair care drama.

A very GOOD hair vitamin I take is CALIF/NATURAL 30 tablets. I usually get them from Wal-Mart but apparently they are catching on and sell out very quickly. Now I get them from their website, http://www.californianatural.net. They cost around $5.00 a bottle but what I LOVE is you only take ONE A DAY. Most hair & nail vitamins you gotta take at least 3 a day…Does anyone else take these?

Ive actually gone through the phase of stop getting relaxers. It’s def a rough process, even 2 the point where i needed a perm, but I stuck it out. In the end I have healthy hair, chemical free, and its really long. Continue to get trims(yes they work) and use a deep condition at least every two weeks.
Another product that works 4 me is motions cpr that works the first time lol true story

I went natural almost 2 years ago and have never looked back. Of course not all women feel they should do the same and thats fine. But I thnk black women need to educate themselves on the use of relaxers, if you know how dangerous they are but are willing to take precautions to care for your hair and have it professionally done then good for you.
I do agree with number 7, but since magazines wont represent curly//afro haired women as we are, I just dont read them! I find sites like longhair care forum, and motowngirl to be very inspirational for women of all hair types- and their free and have great advice unlike magazines.

Maybe there needs to be another hairstylist with a section because all of the females mentioned above has weaves(or wigs, extentions etc) in their hair…Answering questions about natural haircare and your clients don’t even rock their own hair is very backwards…I prefer to read answers from a HAIRCARE PROFESSIONAL and not a Stylist(there’s a big difference)

@ CREAMY. I UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM .MY HAIR HAS BEEN ANIGHTMARE TO DEAL WITH MY WHOLE LIFE. I HAVE EXTREMELY TIGHT CURLS, MY HAIR IS VERY COILY AND KINKY AND TRUST ME, I’VE BROKEN MORE COMBS THAN I CAN COUNT. BUT RELAXERS JUST AREN’T GOOD FOR AFRO HAIR. I’VE BEEN NATURAL FOR 4 YEARS NOW AND I’VE DEFINATELKY HAD TIMES OF TEMPTAION WHEN I JUST WANTED TO RELAX MY HAIR BUT I FOUND SO MANY GREAT NATURAL PRODUCTS AND CONDITIONING TECHNIQUES THAT MADE MY BRILLO PAD HAIR FEEL LIKE BUTTER (NO LIE), TRY SHEA BUUTER, JOJOBA OIL, OLIVE OIL AND SHAMPOOS THAT DON’T CONTAIN SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (IT STRIPS YOUR HAIR OF ITS NATURAL OILS) , LIKE DR BRONNER MAGIC SOAPS. ANOTHER AMAZING PRODUCT IS AMLA & OLIVE HEAVY CREAM FROM QHEMET BIOLOGICS- IT’S A MIRACLE WORKER FOR NATURAL HAIR. AND CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION!!!!! MAYBE YOU PREFER THE APPEARANCE OF STRAIGHT HAIR, IF SO- TO EACH HIS OWN. BUT YOUR NATURAL HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL AND THERE ARE GREAT PRODUCTS OUT THERE YOU JUST HAVE TO FIND THEM. ALSO IF YOU CAN FIND A SALON THAT DOES STEAM TREATMENTS THAT WILL HELP SOOOOO MUCH. STEAM DEEP CONDITIONAING MY HAIR HAIR MAKES IT FEEL LIKE BUTTER SO INCREDIBLY SOFT. MY HAIRDRESSER STEAMS MY HAIR WITH A GOATS MILK CONDITIONER. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
NATURAL SISTERS -THERE’S HOPE OUT THERE!!!!!

ChicDCChick:
Maybe I can help with that question. I’ve had natural hair for about 14 years now. Honestly, natural hair is soooo versatile, but you have to play with it and do little experiments to know what your hair type is capable of. I have thick and kinky hair. First things first, make sure that you only comb your hair when it’s wet and/or has conditioner in it. I only comb my hair (gently…no yanking) when I’m in the shower and I’ve applied conditioner. Then I use a wide-toothed comb to make sure that the conditioner is evenly distributed from the hair root to the tips. When it comes to styling, I generally only style my hair while it’s wet. So, fresh out of the shower I get out my shea butter, coconut oil and a rat-tail comb and I start parting my hair into 1-2 inch sections. From their I apply oil from the root to tip of each section. I either double-strand-twist it, braid it or put my hair into bantu knots. Then I let it dry. Once it’s completely dry (I usually let it dry overnight), I carefully take out the braids, twists or knots and finger comb them into place. With the double strand twists you get an effect that looks like waves (but there will be some shrinkage as your hair dries, depending on it’s texture, but the curls will be defined). With the braids, you get a wilder hair-do and it looks like a curly texture. With the bantu knots, you get curls that look like those old-fashioned 40s waves. I would suggest practicing with these methods before wearing them out…as you may not like it or need to perfect your technique. Remember, NO COMBING!!! Just use your fingers. The beauty of these curls is that they’ll last at least for two days if you make sure to cover your head with scarf each night.
Also, every now and then, when I want a change or after I’ve straighted my hair with a pressing comb so that I can get a trim, I will try these same methods (double strand twists or bantu knots) on my dry, straight hair. You get a totally different effect that’s so pretty. Go to this site: motowngirl.com. Lots of resources and info. I knew a lot about how to style my hair from trial and error, but this site offers awesome ideas for styles and homemade hair care recipes.
Honestly, I feel that there is so much versatility to natural hair: wear it kinky, wear it straight, wear it to the side, wear it curly. I never enjoyed this sort of freedom with chemically processed hair. And though some people say that they’re hair is not manageable without chemicals, even if you don’t stick with it, I urge you to observe at least once, the texture of your natural hair. I have that brillo-pad hair that many of y’all lament and let me tell you, it’s so much healthier and longer than it’s ever been and I’ve learned to really love all of me, even the parts that society says are not beautiful or that need to be altered.

Can’t remember who mentioned it, but I’m annoyed too that people are still on this “good hair/bad hair” nonsense. They were just talking about this on the radio yesterday. Good hair is HEALTHY hair…whether it’s kinky, straight, short, long, etc. I understand that as black women, we want to be able to manage our hair, but we need to learn how to take care of it first. I had to learn this the hard way. As a teenager, I was one of those girls who had to have my relaxer every two months…I also wanted to have color in my hair. As a result, my hair suffered temendously. We don’t realize that these are CHEMICALS and repeat use only causes the hair to break down even more. At one point, I basically had to start over and cut all my hair off. I went natural for almost 2 years and now my hair is past my shoulders and healthier than its been in YEARS. But natural doesn’t mean that you can’t wear your hair straight if you want to. You need to train your hair….deep conditioning and flat ironing it will give the exact same look and feel as a relaxer if you use the right products and styling tools (love my Kera Care and my CHI). Again, I know everyone’s hair is different and I’m not saying don’t EVER relax it or color it, but you should have it done professionally and follow up with weekly/bimonthly visits so that you get the proper treatment and conditioning. I get so annoyed when I hear our women wonder why their hair won’t grow or why it’s breaking off…the concept isn’t difficult to grasp: Take care of your hair and it will grow!

@31 Try these tips for getting curl definition:
1. Wet your hair every morning, I find my hair has more definition when wet. Don’t comb it everyday, in fact I comb mine sometimes once a week, maybe twice
2. Only comb it when its wet or damp from ends to roots.
3. And find a good moisturising/curl defining product like shea butter by organics or for curl definition fantasia IC gel with sparkalites.

What you need to focus on–URSLA– is how many in the industry are not into promoting healthy hair. There are hair stylists, hair dressers, and beauticians, but no matter how you say it many lack the professionalism, patience and respect for black hair to teach clients how to take care of their hair. And that would include hood shops to the most shi shi shops. I have been to them all and rarely hear them talk about hair care, it most cases the standard discussion is about styling which is a shame. We can educate ourselves on almost anything we should do the same regarding our hair.

OK girls.. Since we are all trying to achieve the same thing (I think) Why don’t we LIST the products we think work for our hair! Nothing is as good as testimony right?
good sites and products:
Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Shampoo- good for dandruff
Calif/ natural hair tablets.. sold at Walmart for 5.00, 30 tablets or go to http://www.californianatural.net.
http://www.longhaircareforum.com
22: motions cpr
get regular TRIMS and deep condition biweekly (i like weekly deep conditioning myself)
27: DR BRONNER MAGIC SOAPS
AMLA & OLIVE HEAVY CREAM FROM QHEMET BIOLOGICS, look into hair shops that do steam treatments
38: shea butter and coconut oil fresh out the shower
39: Kera Care and CHI
40: shea butter by organics or for curl definition fantasia IC gel with sparkalites.
http://www.motowngirl.com
(i’ll add) Curl FX Gel (purple top yellow skinny bottle) makes my natural hair feel super soft and defines curls well!
————————-
I’ve had natural hair for about 14 years.. and I let the wrong person get a hold of my shoulder length hair (I used to go to the beautician to get it pressed straight) and she Completely F@#$ my hair up within 3 sittings, so I cut it all off and started over. I’m pissed, but I know next time to stick with my regular beautician. Actually it may have been a blessing in disguise though, because I’ve always wanted to see what I look like with a short crop.
Much Love to all my sisters on CL. Don’t be afraid of WHAT GOD GAVE YOU! Natural is the way to go! Try it.. You Just Might get your life back because of it.. never be afraid to work out, swim, get caught in the rain.. It’s AWESOME Girls!

It seems to be working but I noticed that when I wash my hair the next time around, it sheds. I have really thick hair. So am I on the right track???

Hi Ursula! I cut my hair last spring, trying to copy Rihanna. my hair has grown back to like a short bob, but the sides seem to be shorter than the middle. But that would be because of the cut, right? Also, the back of my hair, in the middle, it seems like there’s a little bit of hair. I know protein, and healthy eating, is supposed to help hair grow, and I’m also trying to take some 1000 mcg Biotin. Also, I noticed that I developed a dry, dandruff scalp. Help! I would like to grow my hair back longer and healthier!

@#48,
LOLOL I know. Couldn’t she just say “Thich Curly/Wavy Hair”. Black people are capable of having loose curly hair too. She just sounds so stupid.
-Angel should have ommitted that question.
