MAG COVERS: CHANEL IMAN COVERS PAGE SIX
Thursday, January 22, 2009

Runway and Designer favorite, Chanel Iman covers the newest issue of Page Six Magazine. The 18 year-old model talks boyfriends, tattoos, Tyra Banks and how it’s hard to book some jobs because of the way she looks.
Peep some snippets:
On her frustrations at the difficulties that models of color face in the industry:
“It’s not just black girls. It’s ethnic girls in general: Brazilian girls, Hispanic. You really don’t see a lot of Asians either. A lot of designers think that if every girl on the runway looks exactly alike, then people will come to the shows and buy the clothes because they won’t be focusing on the models….It’s not even just runway either… us ethnic girls should be getting a lot of the covers too! I would love to be on half of the campaigns these [white] girls are booking, all looking exactly alike. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”
On rumors she has been involved with Kanye West, rapper Tyga, and singer-producer Ryan Leslie:
“I’m young and I’m dating. But I’m not gonna say any names. There are special people in my life but nothing serious. Just having a man in general is a job! I have one job; I can’t have a second. I’m the type of girl that if I have a man, I want to be a good girl-friend and be there for them and take care of them.”On her close relationship with Tyra Banks:
“She keeps it real. She tells it like it is. She’s really been a great mentor for me.”

I like Chanel…I understand where she is coming from. This world is so fixated on one standard of beauty but we have a LARGE amount of beautiful women with different ethnic backgrounds. They are full of sh*t when they say “they want the crowd to focus on clothing” NO, women of color will just OWN the runway and the magazine covers…but oh no, White America doesn’t want that. It’s just a way to keep brainwashing people. Color will outshine the blandness of White.

I’m glad Ms. Chanel Iman made it clear that ALL ethnic models have trouble in the business, not just blacks. The fashion world doesn’t accept anything with color to it. It’s such a shame. Some of the most beautiful people in the world have a lot of color to them.
As for the boys: A good personality is really all anyone needs to find a man. Chanel is 18 with an excellent career so, the boys can wait until she’s ready. If she’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, they’ll still be there when her boobs sag. Trust me.

She’s pretty.
I think Black women(especially darker skinned) have it harder, unfortunately, because there is a standard of beauty. White and Hispanic Brazilians and Spanish women are more likely to fall into that standard of beauty that society has. But she’s right, you don’t see many Asians as well, but then again, how many Asian aspire to be models?

She is a cute girl. I am glad she made it clear that ALL non-white models aren’t getting enough exposure. It is not just black women with a paucity of modelling work, what about the Chinese women, Indian women, Middle Eastern women, non-white Hispanic women?? As far as black models, we’ve had Iman, Naomi and Tyra who made it big (plus a few others from the past), but what about all those other ethnic groups? For instance, look how many Miss World titles India has one, and even all the beautiful actresses in the Bollywood movie industry — NOT ONE Indian model has broken into the western fashion world.

Work it Chanel! She’s doing a great job and I hope she has a long career. And Jourdann Dunn was on the cover of Vogue and CL didn’t post that?
Anyhoo thre is a lot of truth in what chanel said, the modelling industry use the whole “we need the clothes to stand out” excuse so they can avoid using ethnic models. And even when “hispanics” make it they are often of pure european descent like Gisele, she calls herself brazilian (fair enough to her ) but she’s actually German! Most hispanic, arab and even black models look sooo white that you would never even know they were ethnic! Its sad.
And what @12 said is sooo true! Why hasn’t an Indian girl become a supermodel already? Racism is still alive in some professions, its pathetic!

It`s true that asians have a hard time in the modeling industry too.But asians, and black people are one and the same people.Recently,DNA experts went to China to test the blood of asians and see where they come from and they discovered that asians have black blood and come from blacks. Now you might think that blacks and asians don`t look alike, but this is not true, asians come from a group of black people in Africa, called the Khoisan, and the Khoisan have slanted eyes and yellow skin, they passed these physical features down to all asians today, when they walked out of Africa about 40,OOO years ago and founded and populated China and all of Asia.

@18..
Basically he said that he only believes in Jesus as an ‘Icon’. He would never put his life in Jesus’ hands because he feels that he needs to take ‘responsibily of his own success and actions’. He said he doesn’t believe in a religion because he thinks people only talk about Heaven because they don’t like the ‘thought’ of never seeing someone who has passed away ever again. And they use it as an excuse. He mentioned that is father had told him to get saved because he wouldn’t want to see him burning in hell and he [Kanye] basically said ‘whatever’ he doesn’t believe in that Heaven/Hell thing.
He doesn’t belive that ‘only Christians, or those who give their life to christ’ can be the only ones to go to ‘Heaven’. Basically, anybody of any religion can.
**But I’m like you dumb ass cavemen looking shit, why would God allow you to enter the gates of Heaven if you practiced a religion agaisn’t believing in Him? He was just rambling on and on about how he just doesn’t believe in it. I know not everyone is a Christian but he was just dissing it. I was just wondering, WHY HE WOULD EVEN SAY THAT IN TIMES LIKE THIS? WHEN JESUS IS THE ONLY ONE TO TURN TO? I’m surprised at him, I thought he was a smarter man. I guess not. I an’t stand him anymore.

Honestly @ #22 (even though we’re way off subject) I believe that this was taken out of context. I know Kanye seems like that arrogant, know-it-all asshole, but it doesn’t make any sense. First he’s saying he doesn’t believe in Heaven or Hell, but then it says “He doesn’t believe that only Christians, or those who give their life to Christ can be the only ones to go to ‘Heaven’….. it’s like OK, which one is it???
Pick one & stick with it.
I’m sorry, i just don’t believe that that’s what was said.

@ 12 and 20. We do have an Indian girl who is doing quite well for herself. She’s been in Vogue and she fronts three ad campaigns this season. Lakshmi Menon, get into her.
Anyway, I love Chanel Iman! My favorite model and she only scored ONE measly ass campaign this season, DKNY Jeans….WTF!? You should see these pale/blank faced models and how much work they get. Go look through an issue of Vogue and see the Ads. All white All the time. It’s ridiculous. And, half the time, they aren’t even cute. They just be white and they get work.
What pisses me off the most is that White-Brazilians run the industry and it makes no sense. Brazil is home to more Black people than the United States. Yet, somehow, EVERY single famous model from Brazil is white?
It’s getting really old really quickly………

@32, Agree. Have noticed. In this economy I think we have even greater power w/boycotting and issuing complaints b/c money is green and many of these indulgences like magazine subscriptions have noticed a decrease in business. Black is Golden and these companies need to recognize that.

The more u think about it, the more u kinda realise the all-black edition of Italian Vogue was indeed just tokenistic. Regardless of how well it sold, Vogue still seems like it merely throw a bone out to black models and were like “here’s ‘your’ exposure, now get lost because we’re preparing for Kate Moss & Co next month.”
Whenever the next fashion week is in whatever city (London? Paris? Milan? NYC?) let’s see if anything has genuinley changed. It is an untested myth that non-white models don’t sell. To be honest, fashion isn’t even that high on my life agenda (I like stylish clothes and shoes but I never shop in excess just pick out selected items) but it is commonsense that fashion is enjoyed internationally not just in North America and Europe. The industry should reflect that!

Love the cover. Love her. I’m glad she is keeping it real and speaking the truth. I’m going to get that magazine & let my daughter read it. Her dream is to be a model and i want her to know that its not all glitz & glam. The modeling industry is tuff–especially high fashion modeling. The models are so super thin and there are a high absence of models of color on the runway.

I like the modles of the 90’s, at least the girls had meat on their bones and curves, (cindy crawford would be considered fat by today’s standards). Now this annorexic look has gone too far and it’s not flattering at all.

I totally relate to iman. i can emphaise with her.Being born to indian mother and father.an indian heritage and sikh faith.from pretty modern family.even in the UK there is just white models that are present that fixate to the size zero perfection.which really needs to stop.Theirs wrong with models of different size.its more relatable then something that is illusion.colour is beautiful and like obama says change has come.so some whites dont like even to this day.but the words changing.I’m quite sure there will be more ethnic models.i hope.I like Iman shes different.unique in a sense of mind. She’s stepping it up,im havent heard of her much, but ima sure do my research.

Why do black people act like there’s no Black models so thats the worst, Its ALL ETHNICITIES. We have our legends in the international scene but there could be more. However ,unless you see a fashion show in Tokyo or Shanghai, thats where you’ll find Asian models, how many times has India won Ms World, What makes them different from Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, Bar Rafaeli ( yeah i know she’s Israeli) etc that they cant be projected in that way if it’s only the ‘clothes that matter’
And you’re telling me Gisele Bunchen and Adriana Lima being Brazilian makes them ‘ethnic’ in the colour sense when someone rightly said that there are tons of black and Hispanic people living in Brazil compared to those of European descent.
I feel a bit daft for being excited about that Vogue Italia issue. Just get a bunch of them in a magazine and then what….
The only designer who really use ethnic models that I’ve seen is Kimora Lee Simmons. I’d laugh if the modelling industry started including different ethnicites for the ‘Obama effect’.

Chanel Iman is cool and super thin like most models these days. What bugs me is when they have toothpicks with either implants or “chicken cutlets” in the Victoria’s Secret catalogs. Faking like they really need the curvy clothes and undies until their flatness is revealed in the fashion show. It’s an insult to real women with real curves (t & a) that they refuse to find someone or a few that can actually fit the clothes without pinning. I miss the 80’s girls like Cindy, Tatiana, Christy, Naomi and the 90’s pre-grunge girls like Tyra and Niki Taylor. These magazines annoy me by promoting the bobblehead aesthetic with models like Gemma Ward and faux curvy Brazilian types like Gisele, when you have Jourdan Dunn, Arlenis Sosa, and Lakshmi Denon available.
