Runway and Designer favorite, Chanel Iman covers the newest issue of Page Six Magazine. The 18 year-old model talks boyfriends, tattoos, Tyra Banks and how it’s hard to book some jobs because of the way she looks.
Peep some snippets:
On her frustrations at the difficulties that models of color face in the industry:
“It’s not just black girls. It’s ethnic girls in general: Brazilian girls, Hispanic. You really don’t see a lot of Asians either. A lot of designers think that if every girl on the runway looks exactly alike, then people will come to the shows and buy the clothes because they won’t be focusing on the models….It’s not even just runway either… us ethnic girls should be getting a lot of the covers too! I would love to be on half of the campaigns these [white] girls are booking, all looking exactly alike. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”
On rumors she has been involved with Kanye West, rapper Tyga, and singer-producer Ryan Leslie:
“I’m young and I’m dating. But I’m not gonna say any names. There are special people in my life but nothing serious. Just having a man in general is a job! I have one job; I can’t have a second. I’m the type of girl that if I have a man, I want to be a good girl-friend and be there for them and take care of them.”On her close relationship with Tyra Banks:
“She keeps it real. She tells it like it is. She’s really been a great mentor for me.”

4000 WORDS – your telling me lol. its like that even the UK.i guess some asians dont know how to get seen or out there.
CHARMAINE – I like how you said blacks and asians are as one,the same people. But is that info true?? lol. im intrigued.Being indian/sikh myself.so i like this post,
LMAO 37. true though.
Why do black people act like there’s no Black models so thats the worst, Its ALL ETHNICITIES. We have our legends in the international scene but there could be more. However ,unless you see a fashion show in Tokyo or Shanghai, thats where you’ll find Asian models, how many times has India won Ms World, What makes them different from Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, Bar Rafaeli ( yeah i know she’s Israeli) etc that they cant be projected in that way if it’s only the ‘clothes that matter’
And you’re telling me Gisele Bunchen and Adriana Lima being Brazilian makes them ‘ethnic’ in the colour sense when someone rightly said that there are tons of black and Hispanic people living in Brazil compared to those of European descent.
I feel a bit daft for being excited about that Vogue Italia issue. Just get a bunch of them in a magazine and then what….
The only designer who really use ethnic models that I’ve seen is Kimora Lee Simmons. I’d laugh if the modelling industry started including different ethnicites for the ‘Obama effect’.
She’s a Beautyful black woman. She reminds me of cassie a lot.Lol people that pick out the models are either girls or gay men..datz why they so damn skinney! Men and gay/woman have different opinions on”beauty”. nd lol @ #37
At first glance I would have said something negative. After reading the post I have much respect for her. What she said is real, I wish you could have seen the Montel William show the other day on females who hate their race. It was serious and very sad. This post confirms what some of the females mentioned on the show!
Chanel Iman is cool and super thin like most models these days. What bugs me is when they have toothpicks with either implants or “chicken cutlets” in the Victoria’s Secret catalogs. Faking like they really need the curvy clothes and undies until their flatness is revealed in the fashion show. It’s an insult to real women with real curves (t & a) that they refuse to find someone or a few that can actually fit the clothes without pinning. I miss the 80′s girls like Cindy, Tatiana, Christy, Naomi and the 90′s pre-grunge girls like Tyra and Niki Taylor. These magazines annoy me by promoting the bobblehead aesthetic with models like Gemma Ward and faux curvy Brazilian types like Gisele, when you have Jourdan Dunn, Arlenis Sosa, and Lakshmi Denon available.
