♫ NEW MUSIC: LIL’ WAYNE - “PROM QUEEN”
Monday, January 26, 2009

(LINK UPDATED!)
Lil’ Wayne makes more and more steps towards becoming a more crossover artist. Although he’s done a pretty good job of doing that with his last album, Tha Carter III, Wayne goes for a more edgy, rock feel on his new single, “Prom Queen”. He garnered his first #1 single with the sing-songy “Lollipop,” and hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
“Prom Queen” finds Lil’ Wayne with that same delivery, but actually, with a bit more singing, and still tinged with autotune. I can’t say that I’m mad at him. The track is Wayne’s first single from his upcoming album, The Rebirth, which is said to take a more rock direction. I should have seen this coming when Wayne starting rocking skinnies and vests, fedoras and getting all these piercings. I believe the female vocalist at the end is Shanell, who we have featured in our artist spotlight section, and is on tour with Wayne right now.

did he burp in the middle of the song? IDK i like the idea of musicians trying different things but Wayne should learn from Kanye. Something about a rapper giving up the skills of rhyming for easy lyrical content it seems watered down and sell out. They need to stop thinking that they are a brand by selling their name and not their talent. Tina Turner is the only artist i know that has done different genres sucessfully. If he wants to do this he needs to come harder, there is a difference between rap and rock. Rock has been around much longer and the fans have seen it all so the ones who truely know rock knows that this sucks……but i’m not one of those people so go wayne!….?

@15 no I wont be playing this garbage in my car tomorrow and because I have ears I will not be buying this rubbish that is the worst crap I may have ever heard! Any why support a rapper who claims to be all “hood” and “street” but the minute he gets a paycheck he sells out! This man or thing shall i say, clearly has no passion or love for hip-hop, he only cares about money! I hate artists like him, in fact people like him are the cause of the industry’s current dramatic demise! There is pretty much no or little talent in the buisness right now and thats because people only care about money, not about what they are portraying!
Run DMC pulled off the rock thing, but they had genuine passion for making hip-hop mainstream, they didn’t sell out, they kept making amazing music and proving that hip-hop wasn’t just for the streets its for all people.I have absolutely no respect for wayne as an artist and will never buy into the hype.

Yo I’m learning that there are some real ignorant and closed minded people in the world. Whether you like Wayne or not, you gotta understand that this guy is an artist. He’s creative. This is so out of the box for a rapper from New Orleans. So limiting this artist to one genre of music is ignorant and unfair. This guy has a brand on his eyebrow that says ‘I AM MUSIC’. Don’t limit this guy to rap and hate on him because he’s trying something different. if anything, I applaud Wayne for stepping out and doing something totally out of the box and unexpected. AND I dig the song!

To the average hip hop fan who luvs lil wayne will pick this shiii up and run with it, because they give wayne the benefit of the doubt…”Oh, he’s being creative” or “he is a true artist for switching genre’s”. Well, this is horrible…sorry. I can see why he is expanding his music, basically it is a smart move but this shii is wack. I mean c’mon. It is the least bit creative. It sounds dumb and he sounds mentally challenged.
i appreciate good rock, hip-hop, indie, classical, reggae…If your gonna step outside your box wayne…YOUR GONNA HAVE TO COME HARDER.!!!!!!

There’s a difference between an artist experimenting with new sounds (Kanye) and an artist using a gimmick to try and sell albums (Lil’ Wayne).
He ain’t experimenting with shit other than autotune.
He don’t play an instrument (regardless of him pretending to play guitar), he can’t sing for shit so he uses autotune to cover that up, and he don’t produce.
So what exactly is Lil’ Wayne experimenting with here?
He ain’t doing a damn thing other than trying to build on the current wave of hipster shit going on and appeal to the white audience to sell more records.
Everything Wayne does is contrived and fake, from his clothing style to his so-called blood affiliation, to his “experimentation” with music.
He wasn’t on none of this tight pants wearing rock star shit before the hipster movement started.
He saw that shit catching on and decided to switch off to that before any of those artists could make a name for themselves in the mainstream.
Wayne gets no respect artistically or personally around here.

All they need to do is a remix f/ Cold Play or one of these other white groups that everyone loves so much and it will get crossover. It aint great but it has potential.

crap is not art. crap is not art. crap is not rock n roll. crap is not alternative.
some of you will accept someone farting on a track when you like then. nothing about this screams top 40. the song itself maybe but not the way it’s performed here.
you can tell kanye and wayne no matter what they do they will never sell more than 3 million. 50 did the same ole same ole and did 15 million world wide. they know him in countries you will never perform in. the crap you 2 put out will not get you close

…i’m not a huge fan of what Lil’ Wayne has become over the years. I appreciate his artistry from…hmmmm…10 years ago when you could tell he was SERIOUSLY hungry and loved his craft.
At this point, it’s really all about him swimming with the current and shitt’n out stuff that will get ate up on Top 40 radio. Regardless of personal opinion, this song will get played on the radio [hmmm, doubt it'll get played much on Hip Hop/R&B stations] 10 billion times a day once it impacts.
Surprisingly, I like the song…for all the superficial reasons. But, it doesn’t stop me from noticing that this is huge bait for [an attempted] broader crossover success.
