I live in the Bay Area and I am glad that this story is getting national tv coverage. It is so wrong what that officer did to that young man. I’m glad to see people out there and demonstrating.

That a shame how we still do not have no rights. I cried to here this. Like damn shawn bell and i forgot the other guy that got shot 50 times through the door. Add them shot up 100 times and now this. We will never get justice that why we need to get on are job and fight back. Yes and what was crazy is one of the videos I saw an officer was ranting and raving about a “brand new” cop car being completely vandalized. I’m like HELLO are you serious?! A man was just MURDERED in cold blood and you’re talking about a damn cop car?! To bad one of the cops wasn’t in the car at the time it was vandalized.

Also, the cop responsible for the shooting quit the day he was to be questioned. He didn’t appear to turn in his resignation; he had his attorney do it on his behalf. The cop is also in “protective custody” due to threats made on his life. Are you serious? He drew his weapon, shoots a man execution style and now HE’S in protective custody! They need to let that a$$ loose so they can get a hold of his a$$!!!

This whole thing was just completely uncalled for. This is the time camera phones and internet can possibly make a difference…though a sad situation, they can’t deny the footage of that video! It’s not just a figment of our imagination that cops do this to us black people.

Update on Fruitvale BART Protest

As I write this there are no less than 6 helicopters circling overhead in downtown Oakland. On the first day of the 10th year since Amadou Diallo was brutally gunned down by police in New York City, Oscar Grant was fatally shot in the back by a BART police officer, and the event was caught on video.

As I write this, rumors are flying and media is fanning the riot flames - car and trash fires, police in riot gear and tanks, restaurant windows being smashed, tear gas and rubber bullets being used. We won’t know the full picture till the night is over and the smoke clears, but the story of the successful nonviolent protest earlier this evening has been overshadowed by this angry chaos.

What is absolutely clear is that folks are furious about the murder of Oscar Grant, furious that a week has passed with no statement or acknowledgment of what happened. What is clear is that we currently don’t have community accountability over our police here in Oakland. In this bubble of progress we are hampered by the same brutal power dynamics that plague the rest of the nation. Racially driven policing that allows the use of lethal weapons in the pursuit of justice is a failed model.

What we need:

- we need police to be accountable when they participate in brutality against us. In this situation, BART police should have issued a statement acknowledging what we all saw, including an apology from Johannes Mehserle, the officer who pulled his gun and shot Grant in the back. There also needs to be a transparent process for the officers involved to be charged and held accountable for what happened. Otherwise, this is just another brick in the wall between police and the communities they are paid to protect.

- we need community justice processes that allow us to address moments of tension and unrest without the lethal presence of police. In Detroit, Ron Scott and others are working actively on Peace Zones, where the community comes together to assess community crises and mete out restorative steps for the guilty party. They are not the only ones piloting this model.

- In addition, if police hope to gain our respect and trust in their process, they need to commit to disarming themselves of lethal weapons immediately, and learn the skills of negotiation and community engagement. There is a BART board meeting TOMORROW Thursday, Jan. 8, 9 a.m., at the Kaiser Center, Third Floor - they need to hear our voices.

- We need ongoing supported focus on police brutality and accountability, even as we develop our own peace zones. It’s no longer sufficient to get furious when a civilian is killed by police, and maintain that fury until the officers are acquitted or resign. For the past 10 years it has been nearly impossible to get sustained support for this kind of work from the foundation world, so as organizers we have to sustain this work in other more community-based ways. I definitely want to shout out The Gathering, who have picked up this unpopular issue as it relates to juvenile justice, with the commitment of Harry Belafonte - they are joining the Oakland community for actions next week. I have also heard that Uhuru will be hosting a meeting tomorrow evening to discuss accountability and healing.

- we need to express our gratitude to groups like Community Justice Network for Youth (CJNY), who identified the gaping hole that exists in the non-profit and organizing community of Oakland in terms of police accountability work. CJNY stepped up in a major way for today’s nonviolent action, but they can’t maintain this effort on their own. Bay Area groups who focus their work on young people of color, this political moment needs you.

- And I know I am biased by the perspective of working at The Ruckus Society, but we need to engage in the deep training and skill development around pulling off large scale strategic direct actions. There are ways to pull together mass actions in a short time period that gain media, build the power of our positions, and help the community to see and understand the situation and how they can get involved. Over the past few months organizers from directly impacted communities - Bay Area immigrant youth and a multi-racial LGBTQ coalition - have successfully shut down the ICE headquarters building and protested Prop 8 in downtown San Francisco using affinity groups, action teams, brilliant blockading tactics, and police and media liaisons. Those actions were planned and pulled off in VERY short amounts of time, and Ruckus is definitely not the only group that does this sort of skill building. Most importantly, in terms of tonight’s events, there are also ways to de-escalate situations, even when people who aren’t directly impacted by oppression start losing their composure.

We know how to do this, and must apply that knowledge, or risk losing all credibility in terms of our demands for peace.

At this moment, as Mayor Ron Dellums meets with protesters, and the Oakland Police Department hold a long overdue press conference, we must not sink to the reactive and chaotic level of Officer Mehserle. This is our moment to unite behind a nonviolent call for transparency, accountability and justice from Oakland Police Department. We must model the community we wish to be.

This is just so sad to hear, I’m glad the community is coming together to stand up for this fallen young man, who now has a fatherless child. I don’t understand what the big threat to the officers were, even if Mr. Grant was a little hard to compose, there were officer holding him down by this point, so to shoot him was what icing on the cake? Then there is suppose to be some type of issue where it was said the officer was reaching for his taser and grabbed his gun instead. I’m no gun totting professional but the way you use a taser and shoot a gun are done two different ways. It’s murder - and possibly criminal charges for whoever held Grant down. They may get off.. if they “didn’t know the officer was going to shoot him”. The shooter is going to prison, if not - it’s definitely a consipiracy.

I was at the protest yesterday at the BART station and I feel that the only way for the demonstrations to stop is if the BART police admit that the shooting of Grant was wrong and the officer who did it faces jail time. I was always ride bart and sometimes the officers do take advantage of the power that they have and harass certain people, and i think that this was just another case of the bart police abusing their power. And instead of the officers who did this quitting he should have been fired and he does deserve to pay for what he did which for alot of people in Oakland that mean going to jail.

It is very sad that this has happened. Our young black boys are dying by the people who suppose to be protecting us. About a month ago, this happened to a young football player in Mississippi. Mississippians were too scared to protest. I have a son in high school and I am very scared for him. I am always talking to him about how our race is becoming extinct because our black men are in jail ( some for poor choices/injustice for some) or dead. I try to talk to him about making the right choices and try not to get caught up in a situation. Every time I go to the mall, I see young black males (14-18) in handcuffs. That makes me cry everytime. If this continues to happen,what would happen to our race in ten years? Women need men to reproduce! Guess what, there will be no men. Then ,there will be no us. That is what they want. That is why they are killing so many of our young men! We use to be the second largest race in America,but now we have moved to number three.

I am from the Bay Area and I’m glad that this story is getting national attention (the last two officer involved shootings where the victim died didn’t get much attention, Oakland has had three separate officers kill three separate people in the last 17 months).

Side Note: I wish those who are protesting would not burn and vandalise innocent businesses and cars they shouldn’t take their frustrations out on the public, this is not the public’s fault.

I think BART and the City messed this up, they had no intentions on questioning the officer last week they waited for a public outcry and now they want to speak to him, but he know he might face charges so he isn’t willing to talk anymore (last week he was).

I can agree with you that BART police spend more time doing stuff that isn’t in their job discription. I ride BART at least three times a week into SF and all I see is them standing at the ticket slots making sure nobody sneek on the trains, they need to be riding the trains to curve some of the crimes that take place on them. Almost everytime I get on BART something jumping off.

I do not want to see any more sucides or sucide attemps, I hate seeing the kids fighting eachother, I hate when people play loud music like everybody want to hear that after they been at school and work all day, I could go on and on. BART police need to do the stuff they paid to do.

#39 you are so right. Black on black crime is more common than white on black crime but look what gets national attention, Oscar Grant whom I’m going to assume was no saint. His family claims he had a troubled past so my imagination runs wild with assumptions. I’m sure he fit the typical profile of a young black male mixed with the wrong crowd which I’m sure did not end with the birth of his daughter. I shouldn’t bother mentioning what I think of him and similar young males who barely contribute anything positive to society. He was bad mouthing the police officer and being uncooperative and unfortunately had his life cut short by a most likely racist cop who should pay the ultimate price for what he did. Even though I’m sure I would not have approved of this young man’s life, I believe he could have changed and probably did some great things. I don’t believe he changed his ways like his family said because if he did he might have been here today. Instead he was handcuffed for getting in some mischief( still making assumptions, I don’t know the entire story).

Why do I keep seeing comments about black on black crime like it’s some how parallel to a public service worker, who is supposed to help ensue justice, decides that he’s gonna abuse his power and take an innocent man’s life. If oscar was asian, red, blue, indian, or green, his life that was so senselessy and abruptly taken away is cause worthy to start a riot, be angry and upset and most importantly HAVE SYMPATHY over. I don’t know what happened to my last post, but my point was they let anybody on the Oakland Police and BART Police. I’ve seen the BART police exam ( I know people who took the test) they don’t take the highest scores they just take a passing score (70% you can guess and get that). Then I read what you have to do once you pass the test part, there is no real/intence police training at least it wasn’t the last time I read the job discription.

I always thought that BART police where real officers assigned to the BART, but I later found out that they wern’t. Oakland will let anybody on their Police force and this was happens. Unqualified people with extremely poor jundgement leading to tragedy.

for anyone to act as if this tragedy is no big deal b/c we have alot of black on black murders, to me you are just as stupid as the police officer that had the nerve to shoot another human being ( and killed him) that obviously posed no threat. To make the situation even sader the murdering cop did it in front God knows how many witnesses as if he is untouchable . I’m not a violent person but I do believe we have a every right to be pissed off. God forbid one of our male loved ones become next.

It makes me sick to my stomach to hear these Black store owners condemning the protest just because they’ve had a few windows busted out on their storefront. Negroes please, don’t you have insurance? A man has lost his life, a mother a son, a child a father and all you care about is a f*cking building. I urge the people of San Francisco to continue to wreak havoc on the city. There is nothing wrong with rioting and busting out a few windows and torching houses. We have to let these crackers know that we have relieved them of their authority. We are taking matters into our own hands because the Black man cannot get justice in the courts.

Either black people must make a commitment to do something that will work; which they won’t do because of various reasons, or be quiet, recede back into the matrix, and try to do things that will not offend master like the majority of these slaves do.

Listen, you are obviously not Black (if you are, then God help you) so you do not share the same sensitivities as a Black person. If a white man had shot and killed a Jew, it would have been just as bad but I would not show any interest in it because frankly, my interest lies with Black people. A few years ago in NY a Hasidic Jew was blocking traffic and a patrol car was responding to an emergency. They must have yelled at him and roughed him up a few times. The Jewish community did not like that one of their own was “talked down to” by the cops. They came out in full force and blocked the street. No one batted an eye or said the Jews were over-reacting. Now a Black man was executed in broad daylight and WE are taking things too far? We should point fingers at ourselves and say “yes we deserved to be killed by the police?” Are you kidding me? Hell no! It is critical for white people to know that the days of singing “we shall overcome” are days of the pass. We are a different breed. We are not handcuff by the non-violent, love your enemy approach. We do not pray for our enemy. We pray that God kill him, or that God will help us kill him.

I have lived in Oakland All my life and I use the BART system occasionally to get around. And now when the train passes the FRUITVALE Station my heart is stricken with great sadness. I can’t help but look at the platform and think that a organization that was established to “protect” & serve the community took a young mans life. It’s been reported that he was really getting his life together and was an active member of his local church. I just want to express my Condolences to his family and friends and that I lift them in prayer!

This my first time hearing about this. This is crazy, what is this world coming too when cops are shooting innocent people. I just don’t get it. I see no reason for it. I really hope that they start dealing with these police when they do kill or injure innocent people. They need to put through the same thing as murders that aren’t cops. Jail time, or life in prision. Cause it just doesn’t make any sense. SMH @ some of the cops….

Well sis, what do you want me to say? I can only say what I feel. When you read the comments concerning this issue, they are all over the place. All over the damn spectrum. Black people have been broken down to a level of infancy. This is not an issue that can be solved or resolved by appealing to the same government that sponsors the oppression. I agree that the so-called white man has been hardened just like pharoah and the scriptures speak on that, but if black people are going to take a violent route, then be violent with a purpose. You don’t burn your own, burn theirs. Don’t walk up in a cop’s face. Kill the cop. If you’re going to be carnal, go all out with your carnality.
