POLITICS: OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL PORTRAIT / OBAMA’S LETTER TO DAUGHTERS / BUSH’S FAREWELL / BURRIS SWORN IN

Check out the official presidential portrait of President-elect Barack Obama. It’s the first time the portrait has been taken with a digital camera.

In other Obama news, according to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, Obama will allow gays to serve openly in the military by overturning the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The pronouncement came in an exchange with members of the public who sent in questions and were answered on YouTube.

“Thadeus of Lansing, Mich., asks, ‘Is the new administration going to get rid of the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy?’” said Gibbs, looking into the camera. “Thadeus, you don’t hear a politician give a one-word answer much. But it’s, ‘Yes.’”

OBAMA’S LETTER TO DAUGHTERS

The Obama family graces the cover of the January 18 issue of Parade Magazine.

In the magazine, Barack Obama reveals in an emotional letter his hopes and dreams for daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, as well as every child in this nation.

In the letter titled, “Letter To My Daughters,” Obama writes:

“I want for you to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.” [Read the letter in its entirety.]

BUSH’S FAREWELL

Before handing the reins to Barack Obama, George W. Bush delivered a final farewell speech as president in the East Room of the White House on Thursday.

Bush called Obama’s inauguration a moment for national “hope and pride” but warned Americans against any let-up in the war on terrorism.

BURRIS SWORN IN

U.S. Senator Roland Burris raises his right hand as wife Berlean looks on while Vice President Dick Cheney swears him into the Senate at a ceremony in the Old Senate Chamber at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday in Washington.

Burris was appointed by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

That portrait is nice. I went to Barack’s website looking for things to buy, some of his stuff is expensive. I can’t wait to get my copy of Parade this Sunday. Welcome Jr. Sen. Roland Burris.

  6. The Secret Life of Me

Hmmm interesting @ “don’t ask , don’t tell” change in the military. I wonder if that was something that Obama answered and thought thru or if he just answered on the spot. Good for them though!

That letter to his daughter was excellent. It was in language they could understand and it was very touching. Love it! This is a First Family that many people can relate toor at the very least set their own family value level at this standard or better!

I like Bush now that his Presidency is in it’s last days! lol..

  7. Nothing But Love

Bush…PLEASE!!!! just cut the crap and leave already, and i hope you’ve made everything nice and tidy for when Obama moves in.

Awe…. Obama’s letter to his daughters is so sweet.

*****has done in the last few years

  12. Pinkflame1983

I heart the Obama’s. I see he toned down his swexy for the portrait.

BTW: I don’t hate Bush or think he’s a bad person. He’s just not so bright.

Something about Burris doesn’t feel right.

  13. Pinkflame1983

@ 5 I just bought a bunch of stuff and if wasn’t that expensive if you don’t buy the designer items, but it is 2-4 weeks for delivery.

  14. Mel A

I didnt watch Bush’s farewell and dont care to listen to what he has to say. As far as I’m concerned Mr. Obama is our president.

  15. Lovely letter Mr. President. You have AMERICA on your side, and “Yes We Did!”
I got my collection of magazines and this is a wonderful thing to see. My hope is that America just gives this man some time to get America back on track.

Bush can go kick rocks. He’s moving to a rich neighborhood in Dallas near SMU. Folks should go toilet paper his crib and chunk some eggs at it!!

Burris looks like he want t retire. Can’t blame him for that crocked Blacojvich (sp?) guy. But they said he could only take the seat if he promises not to run in 2010. Not much time to even have the seat, oh well.

  16. candyso

Man change is comming but not for the better. Dont ask dont tell is just gonna open the door for more drama.

Bush did screw up the economy it was clinton.

Wake up america caue we havent seen NOTHING yet

  17. cedes

    lmfaoo@ 1
    lets give bush a break
the poor man was a puppet in office, all the control was Cheney’s and the people surrounding him.
His popularity percentage will go up, like his fathers did.
thats what usually happens to ex presidents.

Obama, time to get to work!
No more cover magazines and celebrity treatment.
Next week, we start to watch you, and the criticism begins
    LETS DOO THIS!!!
    LOL.

  29. D-Most

    DUKESMAN2000-

Let’s take a break from the usual ignorance! Clearly we are embarking on something much bigger than any of us could have ever imagined; so let’s not debase the moment not even a little, by raising the middle finger!!

    Get ya Grown Man On!!!

  30. Israel

@29 “we are embarking on something much bigger than any of us could have ever imagined”

Have some self=esteem about yourself goodness. In what way is “this” bigger than us?

  31. CREOLEQUEEN

lmao…. #9 THAT IS SO TRUE!… GIRL HE’S BEEN IN THE CAMERAS LIKE CRAZY… TIMES UP.. U HAD 8 YRS..NOW U MESS OVER US… A CHANGE HAS COME… THANK GOD FOR OBAMA

  32. KIDDO

The Letter to his daughters is what we basically tell our children all the time, is that
we simply want them to do and be better than us, so that they can give their children more and so on and so on. Each generation Should be better than the next. So let’s all stand behind this man and hope and pray WE all can make a change.

  33. Hollywood Blackout

    ****MY PRESIDENT IS BLACK!!

****But why did they airbrush Mrs. O to make her look like she’s Barack’s complexion?

  34. WestNDNbeauty

My President looks great. Oh yeah….HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY GIRL AALIYAH…REST IN ETERNAL PEACE!

  35. Chanizzle

Can’t wait, Obamanation 4 days. If my racist school isn’t showing it, I’m leaving.
    I love Obama!
Dubya, To da left, to da left, everything you own in a box to da left!
Peace out, sorry we can’t say we’ll miss you.

  36. Mika

And yet you still sound STUPID!

  37. Mika

And yet you still sound stupid, Canyso.

  38. Greatestloveofall

Good riddance to that blood sucking devil incarnate Bush. I’m not gonna say the cliched lines about Obama, as I’m yet to see what he can do, but seeing Dubya out of the door would have normally made me glee, but look at the economy. A train wreck orchestrated by this fool.

Look at what years of uregulated markets and capitalism and greed did to the world. Thank you Bush (and Tony Blair and whoever else subservient to him)

  39. LA

Why on earth does he need a live singer for his first dance? It”s not his wedding!!! And Beyonce is a magnet for negative energy. She does not epitomize a wholesome girl. She is a high school drop out, illiterate and rarely speaks unless she’s singing. Her claim to recognition has been exploiting her sexuality. She is not a humanitarian. If she was noted for outstanding community service she would have been selected and invited at the outset of planning. NOW SHE IS DESIGNING A DRESS, TO WHAT, UPSTAGE MICHELLE? I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED BECAUSE BEYONCE IS NEW MONEY AND LACKS TACT AND CLASS.

If Ms. Hudson declined, then Obama should have put on a record and danced his heart away.

Obama and this grand public entrance is rather flamboyant. He should have toned it down and kept the occasion simple yet classy and dignified.

The official balls were more than enough to garner publicity.

Sorry but this event planning personifies stereotypical boastful blacks, and their “get my groove on mentality” that is played out on BET and the big screen.

Save the name-calling. I”m just not blind to the fact the incoming administration is making a mockery out of tradition. Being different doesn”t equate to over the top.

  40. ANN

LET OBAMA GET SWORN IN ALREADY!

    ANOTHER THING….

CONCRERELOOP WATS UP WITH U GUYS!!!! damn yall are late with everything n yall are lacking post your post are getting boring aint like it use to be wat happen to tha end of the year list of 2008 that yall always had????? the least u van do is let your readers know! ybf is is way a head of yall i still love CL yall my fav blog IT aint how it use to be if yall did not it is confirmed that kemora lee simmons is preggers!!!

  41. itzzzkimmm

President Obama is my hero! He is everything a man or woman should strive to be. What a role model.

  42. Ashanti

THERES ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN TELL PEOPLE & ONLY SO MANY SIGNS, ITS SAD THAT PEOPLE STILL DON’T GET IT, WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

  43. ummmm

ok, how is this “dont ask dont tell” policy going to work???

  44. fififj123

How old is Roland? He looks old.

  45. Chanizzle

    @LA
Yeah we’re changing the traditional ball, but everything is different if you haven’t noticed.
Let Obama, his family, and his supporters have their glory.
We’ve made it this far and everything he does from here on out will be written in the history books.
Don’t minimize his accomplishments. If it epitomizes the typical black stereotypes then so be it.
And the first dance singing is not about beyonce, it’s about president obama and first lady Obama so don’t go bringing Beyonce’s life into this because it’s irrelevant.

  46. fififj123

39 you got down with it. I do agree it is over the top and I am a Beyonce fan, but don’t think all that hollering and acrobatics is tasteful enough for the Inauguration for the President of the United States!! It is not the Bet Awards! It is sorta embarrassing to a point. But, I guess each President has his favorite singer as a guest and it happens to be Beyonce. And then also, I think its unlike any other Inauguration because a Black Man is being sworn in right after MLK Day and its more like a celebration for a new day, a new time. After all of the hoopla, hope he is confident, matter of fact, and indignant when it comes to where it counts. Hope he finally does something about these cops that keep killing our black boys. I’m so tired of that and it could be any of us, he has got to do something about the terror that black men have when confronted by an murdering cop.

    Nice presidential portrait!

  49. UM...I GUESS

love obama… can’t wait til tuesday. it can’t come soon enough

  50. Kinu Binu

First, if Bey upstages Michelle, I will cut her MYSELF!.. Love her.. but don’t do it girl.. don’t have the masses mad at you like that please!

Ok, seriously now.. Black people.. deep in my heart I know that we can come together and truly celebrate the occasion in a COHESIVE and POSITIVE way.
No middle fingers, guns and cursing at each other needed right. Now then and ESPECIALLY not now.

good points 39. Did J hud decline the offer? If so, I wonder why… :(

    To dukesman2000:
——To all my Black folks out there…

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, Let’s be Extemely Proud and Show our Pride.. but Uppity is not the same as being Proud of one’s Accomplishments. Don’t act like we’ve lost our damn minds right because for the umpteenth time: WASN’T JUST BLACK PEOPLE that put that BARACK in OFFICE!

And I think what D-most meant by this is bigger what what any of us imagined is that… no one could have REALLY imagined such a great thing happening in OUR lifetime.. I mean, slavery happened for 445yrs.. 538yrs? (something like that).. and the civil rights era and KKK riots were happening just 40-50 years ago..

So YES we are making progress.. YES this is GREAT! But lets celebrate for all of our grandparents and ancestors who DIED trying to make this moment HAPPEN.. don’t just act like ghetto ignorant asses with your pants saggin and drinks in your hand doing the same ole s–t on the block and call it ‘celebrating’. Do some real celebrating and go into your neighborhoods and BE the Change that Barack speaks of! Or hell, follow a similar path so that you can be the NEXT Barack, right?

Sorry if I sound like i’m preaching.. but us black folks need to get on one accord with uplifting our community.. Let’s Celebrate.. but then lets get our own Asses up and start rebuilding OUR image for ourselves and for our kids, so that America and the rest of the world will take us seriously! Barack is the first step.. But we are in DIRE need of So many more positive Black world leaders.

Love u CL readers. Good night.

  51. UrbanChic

Wow, I just love how people fault Clinton for the economic disasters. Isn’t one of the first rules of leaning Republican learning to take responsibility for ones actions? Okay, Bush needs to step forward and take responsibility. It was his continuous focus on deregulation that lead to the abuse of our economy by the rich.

  52. Kinu Binu

i was so driven.. i didn’t think to spell check nothin.. lol.. ya’ll get my drift though :)
    nite!

THE OBAMA’S ARE THE EPITOME OF A CLASSY FAMILY!! GOD BLESS AND WATCH OVER THEM…AMEN!!

  55. Shon

I agree with 39 also, if J. Hud turned him down he should’ve gotten someone like Kathleen Battle, opera singer or something. But Beyonce’, honestly I’m just hoping she doesn’t embarass us as a people. Maybe Jay-Z will explain to her simple self how important this is and how she HAS to not bring that sasha fierce bullsh!t into play.

  56. EbStar

Burris = Boo! If we didn’t have Obama, I wouldnt even tell people I’m from Illinois.

  57. UrbanChic

Shon, don’t worry about it. Like I tried to explained to other under the whole Beyonce article, she is only singing at a concert like a whole host of other artists. CL highlights Beyonce because she generates web traffic (think of her as our black version of Sarah Palin). Yes, I know CL made it a point of only saying that Ri-Ri is singing at the Disney concert, but she is indeed scheduled to sing at the same inauguration party with Beyonce. Understand, the Obamas will not allow business as usual from these two women, they have received a talking to about expectations.

  58. NtotheO

    Two things to celebrate today!
Michelle Obama’s birthday and the Notorious movie!
I’m brining the whole family for sure.
Want my kids to see where Hip Hop was and what it could be again….
