On Wednesday, President Obama and Vice President Biden met with Sec. of Defense Robert Gates and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to get what the White House called a “comprehensive view of the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the impact on our forces”.
The administration plans to decrease troop deployment in Iraq and focus on the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Gates wants to put Obama “in front of all the people that are involved in these decisions and all the people that are involved in committing the lives of men and women in our uniform so that the president can get all this advice in an unvarnished way,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
HOUSE PASSES $819B STIMULUS BILL
On Wednesday evening, the House passed an $819 billion economic stimulus package on a party-line vote, despite Pres. Obama’s efforts to achieve bipartisan support for the bill. The final vote was 244 to 188. No Republicans voted for the bill, and 11 Democrats voted against it.
The Senate is likely to take up the bill next week.
Following the vote, Pres. Obama said:
“I hope that we can continue to strengthen this plan before it gets to my desk. We must move swiftly and boldly to put Americans back to work, and that is exactly what this plan begins to do.”
VATICAN CLASHES WITH PRES. ON ABORTION
The Vatican is upset with Pres. Barack Obama just days after his inauguration, accusing him of arrogance for overturning the global gag rule which bans state funding for family-planning groups which facilitate abortions overseas.
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said that with “the arrogance of someone who believes they are right”, Pres. Obama signed a decree which would “open the door to abortion and thus to the destruction of human life”.
He added:
“What is important is to know how to listen, without locking oneself into ideological visions with the arrogance of a person who, having the power, thinks they can decide on life and death. If this is one of the first acts of President Obama, then with all due respect it seems to me that we are heading toward disappointment even more quickly than we thought.”
Archbishop Fisichella said he did not believe that those who voted for Obama “took into consideration ethical themes, which were astutely left aside during the election debate. The majority of the American population does not take the same position as the President and his team”.
Well I am someone who is against abortion. I don’t feel that no one has a right take a life except for God. The only time that I do not vote against abortion is if someone is raped.
Each man and woman knows exactly what they’re doing (without protection).

Well I feel it is my place to opine when my black and Hispanic sisters are disproportionately affected by abortion (i.e. having abortions at three to five times the rate of white women). Regardless of what side of this issue you’re on, common sense tells you something not right there.
While I’m pro-life and agree w/ the Vatican, I voted for Obama despite my disagreeing (vehemently) on his stance on abortion because the Republicans haven’t done much to reduce abortion rates either. The so-called “party of life” pulls the issue out every four years, dusts it off to sway voters and once they’re in office, it goes back under the rug.
Roe V. Wade is never going to be overturned so if you’re pissed about abortion, instead of just yelling about how it’s wrong (which it is — it’s murder and deep down we all know it) get off your asses and do something about it. Donate your time and money to a crisis pregnancy center instead of just blowing off steam. Support programs that follow the ABC system (abstinence, be safe, use a fucking condom/birth control), programs that help mothers when they have their kids to raise them well…pro-life from the womb to the tomb, not just before the baby’s born.

I am offended as an Obama supporter that the Vatican would suggest that we did not “take into consideration ethical themes”, meaning that we did not do our research on the candidates ideas and policies he wanted to implement. I am a very informed voter and to be honest on both sides, there were going to be “unethical” themes. I am so tired of the conservative Christians bashing Obama supporters because of the Abortion issue.
1st- let me say that as an informed Obama supporter, I knew that he would reverse the Gag order…. He SAID he would..so Why in the Hell are people surprised?? Guess they didn’t believe him or sum.
2nd- Allowing funding for these family planning organizations is not simply funding abortions. These types of places offer all types of Government help, counseling, Free contraceptives.. etc. Meaning that it will also offer alternatives to abortion such as adoption and foster care. These places Inform the people in these situations of their options and offer care for people in any instance. It doesnt just perform abortions.
3rd- I do not believe in abortion… personally. I wouldnt do it. Children are blessings and Abortion is killing a child. Its a sticky situation because I also dont want a woman inserting a hanger, throwing a baby in the trash, or any other ridiculous stories that may come up just because someone doesn’t want their child. So… I am a bit flip flop on that issue…

Abortion, legal or illegal is plain wrong. I used to be quite indifferent to the issue of abortion, but after much discussion with my mother as well as learning it as an aspect of my college degree, I have grown opposed to it. All the left wing “pro choice”, women’s rights groups will whine about their bodies being their possession…but they can’t deny the life of a foetus. Right to life is an inalienable one!
And look at some of the implications LEGAL abortions can have on the rest of the world. I’m not too sure about the abortion laws in India and China, but I am aware that lot of people in those countries favor boys over girls. It has been reported that there are high levels of female infanticide in rural parts of them. Legal abortions will fuel that desire of “sex selection” of children.

In 2007 (I think), China had to reform their population control policy because they realize over a million males will grow up w/ no chinese female counterpart to marry. Why? My view is.. I would never advise someone to have an abortion. I feel like people should step up to their responsibility because they are the ones that laid there. However, some people are raped.
With that being said, I feel as it should be a choice. I can’t judge anyone. I don’t have a heaven or a hell to put them in. As a Christian, we can try to bring people to Christ and lead them the right way but we CANNOT judge. All of us sin. Religion has no place in U.S. politics anyway.

Im not for abortion. However, I think that everyone should have the right to make decisions about their body. For the Vatican to be so concerned with the well-being of children, it seems odd that they consistently turn a blind eye to child molestation. That seems awfully hypocritical. 1. In 1984, Ronald Reagan at a United Nations Conference in Mexico City issued this policy prohibiting FOREIGN family planning groups from receiving U.S. funds if among their other services they included abortions, if they lobbied for abortion, or provided info/referrals to women seeking abortions. In other words, “You betta not let me hear you SAY abortion, or I’m cutting you off.”
2. In the U.S., we are fortunate to have Planned Parenthood and other organizations which actually receive about a third of their funding from guess who? The U.S. Government. (Hmmm….. so you’re holding other countries to this standard since you can’t get it passed here)
3. When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, he repealed Reagan’s policy. (Vatican issued the same statement then – look it up.)
4. Dubya (Baby Bush) goes into office and reinstates Reagan’s policy (This ain’t nothing but a game. Ya’ll didn’t know?)
5. 2009, Barack (I feel like we’re on a first name basis for some reason) following suit in the political tradition of Repub vs Dem overturns is again.

this is money for facilities that perform family planning services and abortion is in this country considered a family planning service whether you agree with it or not. There are parameters established both for medical and ethical reasons.
This has nothing to do with legalizing abortion or money specifically designated to buying abortion equipment.
Due to Reagan’s policy, Planned Parenthood of Romania and Columbia stopped providing abortion services/info so that could get the U.S. Money.
However, many other nations did not discontinue their services and lost funding. Countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East
In Zambia, Planned Parenthood lost 25% of their funding and 40% of their staff. They had to thereby decrease ALL services including immunizations, pap smears, and contraception. thereby INCREASING the number of unplanned pregnancies, many of which are children born HIV+. Most of which will face a lifetime of malnutrition.
I have worked in a pediatric HIV clinic in Africa and your eyes are open to many things when you are outside of this country. I’ve handed out condoms to women who had not had access to them until they already started receiving treatment in the HIV clinic. Women who’d had to walk 4 hours to get to their clinic appointment. Women who are forced to breastfeed even though they’re HIV+ because there is no Similac or Enfamil formula.
There aren’t irresponsible teens using abortion as birth control.
And I’m not saying abortion is right.
I guess pro-lifers may feel like these facilities SHOULD have lost their funding. But it sure is something to hold someone a world a way from you and that may or may not be Christian to a standard that you can’t force your neighbor here to be held to. People with no sexual education, no contraceptive options, no money, no food, inadequate public health care systems.
These are the people that need our help,. But if we want to, we can put our foot on their necks and make them do what we want them to do since they need our money.

Planned Parenthood Org’s adn similar org in the US lost funding for preventative screening such as breast, ovarian and cervical cancer, and STD screening because the provided referrals for abortions services. Referrals–i.e, they didn’t perfform them themselves.
Many people don’t realize that in othercountries, it’s either spread your legs or die via starvation, violent death, etc. They have no choice.

I’m a black Canadian and Catholic, basically abortion is legal in Canada and we don’t have a high rate of abortion. Rather, most women are aware of all kinds contraceptive, abstinence to avoid that kind of situation. In Canada, we have family-planning programs that are there for young mothers or women in bad situations. I think it was time for the US to do the same. It’s going to help so many young mothers who do not know what do. I also think it’s wrong for the Vatican to say that Obama broke “global gag rule”. It’s not in there position to tell a country what to do. I really find it sad that the Vatican still thinks that we’re in the early 1900′s when the Church had control of the state.

I have friends who have gotten abortions….i tell dem that i dont agree wit em but i will support dem in their decision. because at the end of it all their the ones left wit the memory, the scar and most likely the guilt.
I wouldn’t want other people’s rights to be infringed upon but how I wish the doctor I had didn’t insist in a round about way that I should go through with an abortion after I had told him and the nurses that I just can’t go through with it though the father expressed that he does not want us to have the baby and he will not accept the baby.
Had I been stronger and had not had the doctor who wanted me to have the abortion and basically telling me it’s not big deal to do it (he performed it so I guess it was in his best interest) I would not have gone through with it. Because it’s some years later now and I still regret it SO much, the emotional pain is there still and it’s always hard to watch a show or movie where someone has an abortion. I don’t know how to just see my decision as something to get finally over and I definitely have not been able to forgive myself for cutting short a human life that, for me, was my own flesh and blood.
If I could turn back the hands of time and just walk out of the office and don’t return I would have. I do take the blame and responsibility for not being stronger and just listen to my soul but I would have loved if the abortionist doctor said don’t do it, just follow your heart. Despite that the father did not the child and that we may end up drifting apart. He was hell bent on convincing me that it’s alright to do it because it’s a common thing to do.

You’re absolutely right. It’s not just a christian or whichever faith issue. I never thought of it in terms of “moral issue” without the inclusion of christianity based reasons. When I (#43) was making the decision to have an abortion, I wasn’t even thinking about it going against religious faith. I was thinking it goes against my conscience about ending the life of my flesh and blood, human life. But sometimes the conscience and the growing beings lose out to the weaker side of the mind – if one regrets having an abortion.
I can see where #1 is going when he/she said that they were for abortion if they were raped. I have always felt the same way when it comes to that subject. What I do not agree with is(and I think that someone has already touched on this) girls who think that abortion is a “get quick” fix.

And I’m not sure if this stimulus package will help or hurt this country. I would love to have a seat in either the senate or house and be allowed to view the bill from beginning to end to make my own opinion versus taking the word of different economists on CNN. You know every one has a different opinion and want what benefits them.
Abortion is such a heated topic. Some people get really upset. The Archbishop’s words were extremely harsh and uncalled for. The door to abortion has been open legally since the 1950’s in some countries and to my knowledge human life has failed to destruct.
I am a Christian and I do NOT oppose abortion. The Bible does not mention abortion. Even if it did, people twist expressions in the Bible to fit their lifestyle anyway. Why would this be any different?
But like I said this is a very touchy subject and every one has a different opinion.

There should be a separation of State and religion everyone has to understand with America being a country that “claims” to allow everyone, there should be the understanding that not everyone is Christian. However, one of the main important things in Christianity is having freewill if God gives it who are you to take it away. Now I don’t agree with abortions when it comes to those being careless but other situations it may be necessary. I feel as though maybe there should be a limit to all of this idk. This situation is touchy and should be made with ALL citizens and beliefs in mind.
This seems like such a I told you so moment. Read all my past post on President Obama. He is so Pro-Abortion ( No PRO- Choice its a difference) that its hard to see him as Christian. With this bill and the stim pac he has just made sure that i 2010 more republican and liberal Demacrates like Chet Edwards (TX) will be siting in Congress which will kill the remainder of his term. What happen to that tax cut everyone under 200,000. Biden had it right 75,000 and under will get tax cut, Welfare ill increse, about 35% of working American will recieve breaks ( not extra money) and no relief for famlies middle to lower middle class who are streched thin but making it work. Oh yea we just bombed Pakatstan.

it’s arrogant to think you can force your beliefs upon the collective, diverse body. i’m Christian, but we as a religion have a problem with intolerance. the Bible says “be not be of this world, but be transformed of it.” if it’s not for you, keep it pushin in the other direction. God gives us free will, and it is He and only He we will have to answer to when the time comes. besides, no sin in greater than the next.
furthermore, providing access to safe means is more responisble than discouraging it forcing others to seek alternative and unsafe means. providing aide to these services will also mean an increase in awareness and prevention to hopefully curtail the last resort effort of terminating a pregnancy.
WAKE UP PEOPLE…change is here. it’s time to start thinking about the common good vs. your personal convictions.

lord hav mercy; let me pump my brakes………. here iam read’n the republican party the riot act. calling them everything “but” a child of god. about their opposition to the stimulus pkg and how they voted along party lines to embarass our prez. then the [today] on the news show it flashed up on the tv, some of the reason why the republicans, went left field on this stimulus pkg. and when i saw some of the things in that loaded pkg. i said; I BE DAMN………….. its alot of loaded shit in that pkg. you could of brought me for a penny. 231 million for contraceptives ain’t that much teen baby making on this earth. and other things that have you just shaking your head. the republicans have run this country in the ground and this loaded stim pkg, is going to finish the job. if not careful the wheels are going to come off. example; like back in the late 60′s the ‘urban renewal program’ where the people who lived by the railroad tracks, we wasn’t high pollut’n folks, and peeple’s like my parents could fix their houses up w/ gov’t grants and loans. “the man” came out and did the remodeling and was all resentful and them folks and my daddy stayed into it. because they were remodeling our house w/ their scrap lumber and wood from their other jobs and billing the GOV’T the price for the new material price. them folks were hosing the gov’t even back then. now if you could follow all this money in this entire bailout . you would find out who’s got who in their back pocket. its time for just tell the truth man………. to take a chill pill, pump his brakes and just watch all this shit fall apart. but seems like president barack is on it. them republicans is going to hold that admin feet to the fire. the prez never ceases to amaze. sarah palin is on her way to the white house for dinner and conversation. this is why this prez is on a whole another level he reaches out to any and all. and i got to sit my hostile critisizing ass down somewhere. and let these people do what they do. and that f up things . republicans and democrats don’t have me coming that way w/ a bag of shoes………. cause i’am tired of this foolishness…… i think i am going to STAND DOWN.
