After months and months of speculation, First Lady Michelle Obama stepped out looking gorgeous as expected on Inauguration Day.
During the ceremony and parade, Michelle wore a custom-made yellow sheath and matching coat by Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, accessorized with Jimmy Choo teal heels and J. Crew leather gloves.
As for the ten Inaugural Balls she is scheduled to attend, Mrs. Obama selected a beautiful silk chiffon Jason Wu one-shoulder ivory gown. See what the young Obama girls wore after the cut…

Malia and Sasha Obama stepped out Tuesday morning in these J. Crew Crewcuts wool coats, that are scheduled to be available in Fall 2009. The designers at J. Crew exclusively made these sketches for the girls.

I thought she looked very elegant!!!
They all looked sooo cute!
I’m so proud! Our First Lady…. she’s looking amazing!
I think the dress was nice, but I know Michelle was tired of ball hopping to dance to the same song.
I wasn’t a HUGE fan of the Toledo ensemble and I thought it was a little too much for a noon time event and luncheon, but the color looked great on her.
The Jason Wu dress probably looks better in person than on tv and photos. I love the one strap and she has such amazing arms and shoulders. I wish she would have worn her hair up and wore a little more makeup. But it’s been a long day for her and she has like a gazillion balls to go to tonight.
All in all I think she was a solid B. Not as much glam as we expected but still lovely. I wonder if her people actually looked at any of the sketches from WWD because some of those designs were really up her ally. She seems to like embellishments but the kleenex look of the Wu dress just doesn’t look that great. Oh well.
And no Maria Pinto? I wonder if they had a falling out because I was certain she’d wear something by her at some point during the day. Weird.
I love the first lady style. The Jason Wu dress is beautiful. Tonight Mrs. Obama placed Jason Wu on the map. A designer that have only been around three years. She have just skyrocketed Jason WU career.
J. Crew is a great choice for the Obama girls, we should always allow kids to be kids.
Michelle looked fab!
The girls were too cute.
Michelle looked great!! i wasn’t to keen on the dress though
Malia and Sasha are just too cute!!! but why is Malia’s coat shorter than the sketch??
First fit yes.
Second fit no.
She’s still fly.
The girls are adorable.
president barack obama!
the younger sister with the pink coat i thought she looked ADORABLE LOL.. she was jus a boppin around today….
i think michelle looked nice in both outfits but i wasnt really a fan of the daytime look…i was hopin she did something a lil more fashion forward..as well as with the evening gown. I thought she would come out in a halter dress or something..she could have really pulled that off…but i guess overall everything was safe..nothing thats gonna get her on any best dressed list but im lookin forward to catching her out in the future
BEAUTIFIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My mother is a seamstress and made a outfit similar to the one she wore during the day to my college graduation and all my family been calling abut that all day, when they saw her dress
Congrats to our new president and his first lady!!!!!!!!
everyone looks amazing
they are the most attractive
and most elegant people to ever step into the white house
a change has finally come
and im so proud to say that I have lived to see America have a black president
They all looked sooo FABULOUS!! I am so freaken proud to be an American. What a beautiful day in the world today. OBAMA!! Yes We Can!!!
Michelle respectively will soon be going down in history as a fashion icon….right next to Jacki O!! No matter if you liked the outfit or not she’s got you looking, talking, and being in the Top 10 blogging; she ROCKED both designs and looked great doing so. She is stylish, elegant, graceful, and classy!
RESPECT HER…she’s like friggin royalty!
I LOVE MY FIRST FAMILY! They’re dolls!!
Michelle and the kids looked great, i loved both her evening gown and her yellow ensemble.
I agree with Hollywood Blackout…the first dress, though it was a nice color, did not flatter her figure. It instead came across as too matronly. I know it was cold, but that is the art of designing to compliment the body while bringing warmth. Her shoes, though Jimmy Choo, were an absolute NO. The color was just not great and the style was once again, matronly. The Inaugural gown was a step in the younger feminine direction, but can you please explain to me why she chose something that made it damn near impossible to dance in??? The gown was way too long and had Barack tripping up while trying to dance with her. On top of this, I felt that Jill Biden’s red gown was well fitted, a great color, and just the right length for the Joe’s dance with her. I know I am majorly picky on this but the vibes between Jill and Joe during their dance were just a lot smoother than Michelle and Barack’s…she looked a little tense and more focused on Beyonce singing rather than making it a moment to take it all in with her and her husband (that feeling where there is no one in the room but you and your significant other)…yea, I kno, very opinionated, but I call it like I see it. Proud day to be an American nonetheless
I love my SOROR Michelle Obama but the first fit made her look like she was going to a church anniversary program, but I love the ball gown—chic and unique
As for the girls! ADORABLE and their hair was on point!
I agree with #12 that I wasnt really a fan of Michelle’s daytime attire, but hey, she’s the First Lady so she calls the shots I guess!
Congrats to the First Family!!! I am so proud of them and this day!!!! CHANGE HAS COME!!!! Whatever your opinions are, just remember, the clothes don’t make the person, they are still one of the most, educated, and intelligent families around. Give credit where it’s due….OBAMA ALL THE WAY!!!!!
I liked both, Im glad she had something a little interesting for the morning, instead falling on the old standbys of red and blue like most. She probably coulda picked different shoes though, they were a little matchy.
The ivory really made her skin look gorgeous!
The girls looked really cute, nicely put together
the kiddies look so cute, and the first lady was stunning
I absolutely love the First Lady Michelle Obama & the Girls…..
First Lady was just beautiful beyond words….. Her sense of style is remarkable…
The girls are adorable as always….. I love that Michelle keeps it simple and sweet
I love them….
I Love America……
I Love Concreteloop
“Oh Happy Day, How sweet the sound”
omg leave to the idiots to critque her fashion!!!! Is that what you take away from this whole experience…smh
The girls look so cute in their coats.
lol @ 24!! I thought they all looked real nice.
I the Toledo out fit was okay I read on another blog said it looked better in person. I liked her ball gown. The girls looked great.
Alright its not that deep…All that needs to be said is the First Lady Obama looked FIERCE today at the inaguration and at the inagural balls. Matter of fat she should be called First Lady is…Fierce or MiMi Fierce because homegirl rocked it. Malia and Sasha looked to adorable the end. Let’s not get into so petty as ” I didn’t like her dress and blah blah blah”.
Michelle and the girls were extra FAB!!! The End….
Lets Go Change America~Barack Obama ( At the youth ball 01/20/09)
NICE VERY WHOLESOME yet fashion forward!
I liked Dr. Jill Biden’s red coat that she wore today as well. But what it was NOT was what Cynthia McFadden (ABC’s Nightline) had on tonight.
very elegant and classy!
very classy!
Um this is a FASHION post! Just because she is the first lady dont mean we have to worship her like she is god. had this been about the inauguration then yall would have had a point, but this is about her dresses so get the stick outcha ass and let folks critique the DRESSES. yall act like we are talkin bout yalls mama’s lol.
I think she should’ve worn a different jacket with the daytime dress. She’s young, and the outfit made her look about 60. The girls looked ADORABLE! The jackets were so cute, and I loved little Sasha’s scarf. Michelle’s ballgown was beautiful. Nonetheless, MICHELLE IS BEAUTIFUL, AND HAS IMPECCABLE TASTE IN CLOTHING. Big up’s to the first lady
lol Cosign #33! damn, some of us have half a brain and can critique an outfit while still appreciating the signifcance of the day.
I like the little details in Michelles early outfit, the bow and the collar, very nice and out of the ordinary.
17: AGREEEEEEEEEEEEEEED! But the white dress she wore was beautiful. The kids look awesome tooooooooo! (:
The First Lady looked beautiful.. The girls were simply adorable..
Oh the girls looked great…go head with their designer coats…come next fall every little girl will have one. I like Michelle’s yellow/green outfit, but I wasn’t crazy about the white gown. For me, a sleaker gown would have sealed the deal.
didn’t like the first dress but i liked the 2nd one
i don’t see why it’s petty to say i don’t like one of her dresses. i can’t like everything she wears just b/c she’s the first lady
the kids looked cute but why do the sketches not look like them? you would think that if you’re sketching a dress for someone, the model would look like them. ok lol maybe that’s petty
Those girls are tooo cute!! and they look good! but i never like the things michelle wears! I really didnt like her gown …i swear there had to be better options then that
I love the honorable first lady Michelle Obama, but I did NOT like her dress, sorry. On tv, It looked like it had yarn balls hanging off of it. She also should have worn chocolate brown or metallic creamy pumps with the inaugural outfit that was design my the cuban guy. The green shoes really threw me off.
The Obamas are a part of the blogosphere now, so Michelle will be under the fashion radar. They are not perfect, and they are still the First Family..criticizing the wardrobe is not “ruining the moment” @ the dufus above
and Michelle Obama has great figure now…she should have worn something strappy, black or navy, and SEXY!!
a sexy evening gown…not a hoochie prom dress….there are sexy evening/ball gowns that would have flattered her figure a whole lot better
Forget the dresses, I am just appreciative that the First Lady represents what African American woman all over the U.S truly are. So impressed and inspired by the First Family. President Obama is truly Blessed to have such a great support system. I truly wish I could relive this moment day in and out. Thank God our generation has become a part of history!
LOL @ 26
It was so enduring when he said “Hi my love” at the 0:29 mark
the girls were great .. they are so cute.. the little one is something else …. the first dress was fantastic…. but the gown eh eh is was aaight nothing to call mom and say LOOK …
like michelle’s dress
sorry, but the girls look like they are 40…of course the have to wear elegant clothes…but how about something more childish and not something that makes the little girl look like she’s married to obama…
Love Them.. They Are Trendsetters!!!!!..
I guess being a guy I don’t know fashion…..but that second dress reminded me of a bed spread. I swear I remember seeing it on my mother’s bed.
@18. . . Umm Soror? Well I kno she’s not ª DST. She must be one of those “honorary” AKA’s lol. I swear AKA’s realllllly need to stop the madness.
But back on subject! Michelle looked great. Didn’t like the green attire. However, the night attire was stunning and elegant. Malia and Sasha are cute and beautiful as they want to be. Nice lookin lil gurl. Malia looks just like her dad. Wow
@47 u have the thickest mind ever what did u want the kids to dress like huh like a two yr old or something please go sit your thick self somewhere neverthe less the kids looked so cute and michelle’s dress was elegant as well as Mr President’s suite God bless the whole family
Although I didnt like the Toledo dress I understand why she wore it, its understated and took attention away from what she was wearing so that the focus could be on the Man of the moment, Barack. Makes total sense and I admire her for that.
The ballgown is beautiful and Sascha and Malika look adorable as always.
Such beautiful outfits.
Michelle looks like the first lady of the Old Mission Baptist church in the green dress. I don’t know who picks Michelle colors but I think she shud stick to nutural colors like black, navy, cremes and tans. I would much prefer her to wear a fitted two piece trendy creme skirt suit.
@50:
You’re actually right-she is an honorary AKA. She wasn’t able to pledge when she was in college because Princeton didn’t have a chapter at the time.
Michelle looked so pretty. I didn’t care for the dress, it look to much like a wedding dress. But they are such a stunning couple. And those little girls are too darn cute.
@Lena B
I told my sister-in-law they need to stop trying to pull EVERY black woman with some clout in there sisterhood. I have NEVER heard Michelle say she wanted to be an AKA. LMAOOOOOO!!! Ima need them to stop making up stuff!
All looked beautiful. Michelle was breathtaking in that gown. Loved it!
oh my god, where is the problem that i said that i dont like how the kids are dressed…
i never said they should be dressed like 2 years old…
i just think that they look a little too old and not childish…and i dont mean they should wear a mickey mouse shirt or something like that, just something that dont make them look like 40 year old ladies…
dont be so fanatic…it gets frightening
michelle and the girls are lovely. period.
