Secondly, I know I’m not the only one who even for a quick second asked why she was singing Ettas song for the inauguation, I had to ask my self why this woman was being choosen to sing this womans songs repeatedly almost like some weird after death tribute when the woman is still alive and eating off the performancs of that very song herself, I just seemed kind of weird, a little disrespctful, couldn’t she have sung dangerously in love, or is that too modern I don’t know. Third I honestly don’t know how she truely feels about Barack, but I’m willing to guess that was her snuff talking was sort of in gest at his descision to choose Beyonce to sing her song, I really don’t believe it had to do with anything other then her snuff talking to the audience.

I think basically people didn’t realize how uncooth Etta James was, she is lady from the streets, and will tell it like ti T.I. iz, the way I can relate it too you younger people who can’t grasp it but picture Mary J blige early on in her career, shes very candid.

She can say whatever she wants about Beyonce but her dissing Obama was uncalled for.

I have to be honest and say that I thought it was way off for Beyonce to choose someone else’s song to perform during the inaugeration. Etta James is a living legend, as Beyonce will will be when she is that age. If Obama was interested in hearing Etta’s classic song, it would have been decent to have the legend herself perform it. Since he chose to have Beyonce perform, it would have been great for her to have performed her own material. You see he didn’t have Mary J. sing Aretha material, Aretha sang her own material. Etta should have had the same opportunity-if her song was desired.

Etta has never been classy i fail to see why she should start for beyonce? I mean do you people actually believe everyone is going to bow down to beyonce like she is some kind of goddess?

And This inuagaration was not only unique because a blk man took the stand but aloooot of young people came out this year and voted so I thought Beyonce singing at the Ball was perfect since indeed alot of young adults participated in the voting of our new President. Beyonce is young gifted and the “it” girl that soo many ppl love to hate. So it only made sense and plus she just did the movie for C.Records so I believe not only did she honor Barack and our 1stLady but also Etta herself so when young folks think like “woow I wonder who really made that song” they can do there history and discover the great Etta James.

Even though i am highly disappointed in Etta I still love her I just wish she would have been more mature now that she is older about the situation and she if she really felt so cold about Beyonce she should have been the last person she chose to act her out in Cadillac Records.

I’m sorry but I prefer Etta’s version over Beyonce’s. Beyonce as she got older and has made her way in the pop market, she has made her voice sound more lighter like they usually perfer women to sing on pop records. “At Last” as not a pop record at all. The song is a very romantic R&B/Blues records that has become an American classic. Usually on Blues records you hear more deep husky alto voices that are song by the women on these records. Etta’s voice fits those records. I love Etta’s version because even though I wasn’t born in that time period that Etta sang the song, but however when she sings it get chills and I start to think about all of the horrors that the country was facing then. It’s like with her version, you can tell this song was needed to be recorded then to have Americans remain sane in a country that was undergoing a crisis from the civil rights movement and the wars. I just get more from Etta singing that song than Beyonce. Most of it from her deep husky voice to and from a historical view point.

Now for Beyonce, I thought Beyonce sang the song well. Her voice was perfect, however, I didn’t feel anything from it. Most Beyonce ballads are like that for me. “Dangerously In love” does sound like a teenager love song. It’s beautifully written for a young couple in high school. She sang that song well but she never moved me. Same goes for “Listen” beautifully written song that Beyonce brought so much strength to it, but once again I didn’t feel anything from it. I noticed that from her catalogue she never could really sell a ballad. What I mean by selling a ballad as that when you think about Beyonce, there really isn’t a ballad that you connect her with. When you think of Mariah you think of “Visions of Love” or “Hero”. When you think of Whitney “I will always love you” (Even though that wasn’t originally her song but she made her own and made the “The Bodyguard one of the best selling soundtracks of all time). Celine Dion “My Heart Will Go On”. Even though Beyonce has released ballads, but she seems to be more known for her up-tempo to mid-tempo songs such as “Crazy In Love” and “Irreplaceable”. Hell “Diva” and “Single Ladies” have really made I am… Sasha Fierce album successful and that says alot about where her talents lie within. She is more of a performer than she is a singer. She is not a dancer like Janet but she delivers alot of energy on stage that makes her very entertaining. So as far as her being able to make “At Last” her own, I don’t see it. If she can’t sell a ballad of orginally written songs from her own catalogue than how can she sell it one that is already self acclaim by Etta? That means she really has to come harder. I think she did well personally and many will agree, however, Etta’s by a public opinion still remains a classic. I think that Beyonce singing at the inaugral ball was not an insult but I do think that the managagement didn’t really think it all the way through. I do think that her management tried to make it her moment, by serenading to the obamas, but an even better idea was for Etta to come out and sing as well. That would be even more beautiful and memorable. Bridging in two different generations is an honorary and respectful move. That’s just by 5 dollars in.

I think etta is just mad at the situation. i too wondered why beyonce sang that song. however earlier post had reported that beyonce had wanted to be a part of history and any way she could. i saw etta perform the song at the essence festival a couple years ago(she was still heavy then) but blew me away. she was also here when blacks didnt have many of the freedoms we do today. so id be angry too. yes she could have express it better but i remember reading that she wasnt happy about beyonce portraying her in the movie(hello lil kim notorious). its got to be nerve racking when you’ve when youve paved the way and credit is not recieved. we all want respect. i think thats what it boils down to. People are sick of her NOW - me being one of them. I loved the Destiny’s Child group. But focus was always put on Bey back then- thanks to her father.
