That actually isn’t Etta James’ song… but she put the song on the map with her version. The song was originally written by Matt Gordon and recorded for a musical. I think Nat King Cole recorded it and then Etta James recorded it and made it her own with her sultry voice.

I’m no fan of Beyonce at all. But to make these types of comments on such a historic night is really uncalled for. This goes against everything that that night stood for. Beyonce did a good job that night and she put her nation first. And I think it was just great timing for Beyonce since she did that song in the movie it’s not like she went out of her way to disrespect anyone. Also, the movie has a soundtrack and of course, Beyonce is suppose to sing Etta’s song as part of promotion. Etta got paid for the movie and from the soundtrack. Wow, very sad. If in fact it is Etta James on the audio, she sounds like an old, bitter woman. I am not a Beyonce stan (I think that’s what you call it), but I have nothing against the woman, and not sure why so many people dislike her…..did she kill their dog, steal their man, shoot someone, molest a child….what is it? I don’t hate on anyone for following their dream and getting their hustle on. This is just sad. Etta should be ashamed of herself. Beyonce did a great job and was actually invited to sing there. Obviously, President Obama wanted Beyonce to perform this particular song for him. Well, I been knowing for a while that she wasn’t too pleased with the way she sung her song period, that goes for in the movie or otherwise. I think she was just more upset that she was uninformed that Bey would be sing the song at the Inauguration. I’m more surprised that she insulted the president, damn, especially for someone who knows 1st hand about racial setbacks. Somebody said previously on this blog how she should stop calling “At Last” her song because she didn’t write it, that is true. It is her “Signature” song, but it doesn’t belong to her. You’d be surprised at certain legendary songs that were made such a big deal of and being called “so & so’s” song, when there were written by someone less noteworthy. Many people still don’t know that “Thriller” actually wasn’t written by Michael Jackson, but people call it his song, when Rod T. from a British group called Heatwave wrote it. But anyway, I guess not every legend is so humble to the fact that the younger generation is actually so respectful to their accomplishments. Aretha had a similar problem like this around this time last year, and she is the Queen of Soul. Just because they are not in their 20s anymore and not on the front page of every magazine does not mean they should be so bitter.

True there are some songs that I didnt know and found love for them due to Cadillac Records but thats where it stops. I agree with Ms. James’ point HOWEVER; I think she could have verbalized it in much better (classier) way.

I also think that the SAME people who are vehemently saying that the “At Last” song does not BELONG to Etta, are some of the SAME people who have a fit when another artist has covered one of their beloved Beyonce’s songs. I do not blame Etta James for how she feels. She just should have made this known from the get go. She should have NEVER allowed Beyonce to sing her song in the movie. NOTHING is better than the original and I felt cheated and offended to hear Beyonce in the movie. If Beyonce wanted to reprise the song, so be it. Get permission and do it on your own dime. NOT mine. If Etta James thinks she should beat down Beyonce for covering “her song,” then by her own logic, Etta has a couple of ass-kickings coming her way too — ’cause Etta’s version of “At Last” was a cover too!

Etta went on stage in Seattle last week and told the crowd she’s gonna lay the smack down on B for “singin’ my song” at Obama’s Inauguration Ball. But not only did the 71-year-old not write the song, she wasn’t even the first — or second — to record it!

Glenn Miller did it first in 1941, followed by Nat King Cole in 1957. Etta got around to recording it in 1961. In fact, Glenn’s version ranked higher on the Billboard Pop Singles chart than Etta’s ever did.

FYI — neither Miller nor Cole ever threatened to beat Etta’s ass — although it’s about time someone knocks some sense into that lady.

I’m sorry but I prefer Etta’s version over Beyonce’s. Beyonce as she got older and has made her way in the pop market, she has made her voice sound more lighter like they usually perfer women to sing on pop records. “At Last” as not a pop record at all. The song is a very romantic R&B/Blues records that has become an American classic. Usually on Blues records you hear more deep husky alto voices that are song by the women on these records. Etta’s voice fits those records. I love Etta’s version because even though I wasn’t born in that time period that Etta sang the song, but however when she sings it get chills and I start to think about all of the horrors that the country was facing then. It’s like with her version, you can tell this song was needed to be recorded then to have Americans remain sane in a country that was undergoing a crisis from the civil rights movement and the wars. I just get more from Etta singing that song than Beyonce. Most of it from her deep husky voice to and from a historical view point.

Now for Beyonce, I thought Beyonce sang the song well. Her voice was perfect, however, I didn’t feel anything from it. Most Beyonce ballads are like that for me. “Dangerously In love” does sound like a teenager love song. It’s beautifully written for a young couple in high school. She sang that song well but she never moved me. Same goes for “Listen” beautifully written song that Beyonce brought so much strength to it, but once again I didn’t feel anything from it. I noticed that from her catalogue she never could really sell a ballad. What I mean by selling a ballad as that when you think about Beyonce, there really isn’t a ballad that you connect her with. When you think of Mariah you think of “Visions of Love” or “Hero”. When you think of Whitney “I will always love you” (Even though that wasn’t originally her song but she made her own and made the “The Bodyguard one of the best selling soundtracks of all time). Celine Dion “My Heart Will Go On”. Even though Beyonce has released ballads, but she seems to be more known for her up-tempo to mid-tempo songs such as “Crazy In Love” and “Irreplaceable”. Hell “Diva” and “Single Ladies” have really made I am… Sasha Fierce album successful and that says alot about where her talents lie within. She is more of a performer than she is a singer. She is not a dancer like Janet but she delivers alot of energy on stage that makes her very entertaining. So as far as her being able to make “At Last” her own, I don’t see it. If she can’t sell a ballad of orginally written songs from her own catalogue than how can she sell it one that is already self acclaim by Etta? That means she really has to come harder. I think she did well personally and many will agree, however, Etta’s by a public opinion still remains a classic. I think that Beyonce singing at the inaugral ball was not an insult but I do think that the managagement didn’t really think it all the way through. I do think that her management tried to make it her moment, by serenading to the obamas, but an even better idea was for Etta to come out and sing as well. That would be even more beautiful and memorable. Bridging in two different generations is an honorary and respectful move. That’s just by 5 dollars in.

I agree with you I was a diehard destiny child fan and loved Beyonce’s first album..and when i heard about her coming out with the sasha fierce persona i was really looking forward to that because i thought it would be fresh…i mean i thought she would really push it to the edge and do something with maybe a little rock and roll twist to it…she’s big enough to really experiment now…but instead the whole thing was contrived and very commercial….she’s just not that original….like i said she needs to go away and come back…like madonna did in her hayday…madonna would go away for a year or 2 and then come back completely reinvented..new sound, look and everything…beyonce should do that…enjoy married life for a couple of years and come back completely new…bold and fresh….i have confidence that she could do it..because she is a good performer.

When Jennifer Hudson sang and still is singin ‘And Im tellin u’ nobody was/is on her ass; and this brings exposure to Jennifer Holliday as well and Etta should be happy about it and take advantage of the fact her song was chosen instead of acting like an old b!tch, I mean ppl will remember her negatively while all this was supposed to put some light in her career. If it wasnt for Beyoncé, a lot of ppl wouldnt know about this woman at all!

Wow, that’s really sad. Etta James is too old to be acting like that. I guess she’s jealous that Beyonce is more famous than she ever was, and more people know the song now because of Beyonce than they did because of Etta. I feel since the inauguration begun Beyonce went around ” beggin” to perform pledding on TV shows and such. Beyonce was NOT smart to keep her fat mouth shut and WAIT FOR the inauguration comittee /Obama to invite her LIKE THE OTHER ARTIST WHO WAS INVITED. It almost appear she beg her way to perform.
