I am not one of those people who begrudge our lighter sisters, but we need to question why isn’t there a variety of representation as far as sisters go in entertainment? I know we have Gabrielle Union, we have a Naomi Campbell, but for every dark sister I name, I can name at least 10 light sisters who are recognized for black beauty. I have pushed for us to examine ourselves. We can’t ask for respect from anyone else until we respect ourselves in all our shades. When I had a writing prompt at school defining beauty, I paid particular attention to what our young black boys wrote. Almost unanimously, they specifically cited being light as criteria for being beautiful. What is going on? What message is being sent that they feel this way. Is it just mere preference, or is there something in our society that still rings, the closer you are to white, the better? I just want that as food for thought. I don’t want my light sisters to take it personally because you are my sisters. Remember, self-examination is the best examination.
