MOVIE PREVIEW: ‘PUSH: Based on a Novel by Sapphire’

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire, is the story of Claireece Precious Jones, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child. She endures unimaginable hardships in her young life: abused by her mother and raped by her father.

The film won numerous awards at this years Sundance Film Festival and was recently picked up by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Oprah had this to say about the film:

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The moment I saw Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie.

“The film is so raw and powerful—it split me open.”

Make sure to view the clip to see some stellar performances from Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and new comer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe. Can’t wait to see this!

I have read this book several years ago and thought then that it was powerful and artistically written. I will show up in support of this project. I think it’s a wonderful thing. I like Sapphires candidness in her work and in real life.

I read this movie in the 9th grade (6 years ago!).. It’s a hard read at first because it’s written from the illiterate girl’s point of view, but once you get into it, its hard to put down. A very powerful book. You can picture every graphic scene in your mind. I don’t know if I’m ready to see a movie yet lol.

I don’t know. I wonder why only black women’s pain is real and authentic and why it’s so much easier to get a movie made about it than about our triumphs and our joys. It does look powerful and I know people have been through this kind of situation, though, thank God I have not. It appears that both Mo’Nique and I never thought I’d ever say this - and Mariah - have been directed to some of their most powerful work. I’m sure it will be provocative and thought-provoking, but I’d still like to see a quality family drama without cariactures ( I enjoy Tyler Perry, but c’mon) that shows the issues that a black middle to upper-class family go through because I think that is just as authentic and real as constantly showing our pain.

Just reading the discription makes me so much more appreciative

I am always down and sad because I feel like things could be so much better for me but just when you think u have a bad others have a worst. Being overweight alone I think I couldnt deal with, but being overweight, illiterate, abude and raped. Wow, I have to see this movie

wow this looks like an incredible film! I cried just watching the preview. The lead actress ‘Precious’ is a great actress especially for a new comer. Mariah does an impressive job too, she’s stepped up her game but those cheek implants need to go. Paula is actually a good actress it seems, I’ve never seen anything she’s in but have only heard about her acting (which was described as bad) but at least she’s proving people wrong.

Hope this film will be online cus thats the only way I can watch it!

19.

let's not lie

Thursday, February 5, 2009 /

like another post stated, why is it that so many movies about our hardships come out yet producers overlook positive themes involving black women? this is so stereotypical. nope i’m not watching it

20.

Uplifted-girl

Thursday, February 5, 2009 /

@ #13 No ID, I understand what you mean, but the truth is that the problem with our black community is that we still don’t confront our own negative issues to focus enough on the positive ones. The negatives such as the constant name calling amongst ourselves, the light-skin/dark-skin issue, the absence of fathers and a strong family foundation, and I could go on and on. A film like this needs to be seen by everyone to open our eyes to the damage we do to ourselves and others in everyday life so that we can change. This movie looks like it’s brutally honest and it’s something some people don’t want to see, but it’s reality and happens everyday in society. If people can’t face reality and try to change things, what’s the point of moving forward? I hope everyone supports this movie.

HMMM

Thursday, February 5, 2009 /

Wow this looks extremely powerful and am very pleasantly surprised by Mariah’s depth. Although I completely agree that there should be more positive and realistic representations of black women in television and theater, films like these need to be made to expose these issues that are normally kept so bottom shelf paper bag.

I read the book over 15 years ago when it first came out. Extremely poignant story. I recommend anyone that is going to go see the film to read the book FIRST. There was so much more to precious than met the eye, and she ended up becoming literate to a point to where she could write poetry. As far as the film, based on the above clip, new-coming Gabby IS THE BOMB!!! She truly brought Miss Precious to life! Great job!

Mariah’s role looks also promising and redeeming from her earlier work in Glitter, so I look foward to seeing more from her. Monique was probably the ONLY woman I could see playing the role of the abusive mother. This role will be ground-breaking for her career, I even smell OSCAR!!!! lol She touched me when I read in Essence how she overcame sexual abuse in her own life. Paula Patton, if that’s who that was in the clip also, does a great job as well from what I see. She’s so beautiful.

I’m so pleased with all of the great, and grossly under-rated actors coming out now to give us REAL PROJECTS after most of television has been saturated with reality television. I’m looking foward to this film!

wow. i cried. mariah carey? I had to really ask myself if that was her at first… wow… beautiful… mo’nique… I’m just in love with the reality of it. I’m gonna buy the book now.

It is, however, quite telling that we have that complete polarisation when it comes to black female roles; either really raw and unbelievable painful and real to watch or just a total fabrication of what a black female is.

beautiful… I hope this really takes them places and they fly

I am at a loss for words. This book was one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. I know the movie will be just as great. And with an all-star cast like that, I can’t wait to see the film.

To those who’ve read the book:
Didn’t Claireece have a younger brother who also abused her? That was a very powerful story line (at least for me.) I hope they didn’t omit that from the movie. But I haven’t seen a brother in any of the promos.

I watched the clips and started crying. I can’t stand to see/hear abuse esp. when MoNique’s character was cursing around that poor child and calling her an animal…I could have jumped through my PC…lol.

Miss Gabourey played that part so well, then to see her speak along side MoNique…WOW! I can’t believe she’s never acted before. Anyway, I’m not sure if I can handle seeing it but I think I will just suck it up and do so.
