MOVIE PREVIEW: ‘PUSH: Based on a Novel by Sapphire’

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire, is the story of Claireece Precious Jones, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child. She endures unimaginable hardships in her young life: abused by her mother and raped by her father.

The film won numerous awards at this years Sundance Film Festival and was recently picked up by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Oprah had this to say about the film:

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The moment I saw Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie.

“The film is so raw and powerful—it split me open.”

Make sure to view the clip to see some stellar performances from Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and new comer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe. Can’t wait to see this!

This movie looks deep but I think I’ll go see it. I’m not sure if I can take Monique serious tho, even tho there was nothing funny about how her character was treating Gabby’s character she still made me chuckle a bit.

This movie reminds me of Monster’s Ball a little, I guess by the way that it’s filmed. Was it directed by the same person?

in the words of Florida Evans, “Damn, DAmn, DAMN!” This movie looks like a killer to me! I’ve heard so many wonderful things I’m just excited to see these clips from it. I think its wonderful that it involves and is being promoted by so much african-american talent!

I can’t wait to see a really good movie. The last good movie I recently saw was Not Easily Broken. I have already called my local library to check this book out. Even Mariah Carey look serious in this one. This got to be good if Tyler and Oprah got a hold of it. I

These are the kind of films that really interst me, it just makes me think about all the girls that are going through/have been through this, that upset me alot. But im not sure if im mentally ready for the film, I think i’ll need to start on the book first.

I think I might see it but the only thing holding me back is Paula Patton (I think that’s her name). She was HORRIBLE in Mirrors and I would act to see her horrible acting again.

Hey for everyone confused on the name of the movie. This movie and the other movie starring Dakota Fanning & Dijmon. Lionsgate & Weinstein Co. are suing each other for film rights.

I agree with some of our concerns here about how this movie lines up with our need to see Black women in happier, more vibrant more uplifting situations on film….

But i have also taught in Harlem, The Bronx and Brooklyn for over 12 years and have met many-a-’Precious’; young black girls who’ve become the burden in their families, many of whom are treated like dirt, garbage just for being born, just for being black, just for being their father’s child, just for being fat, just for wanting to read, just for wanting to be…many of these girls carry the pain and regrets of their parents, adults who haven’t yet found their purpose and take their anger and frustrations out on their children.

Remember Pecola Breedlove of Toni Morrison’s Bluest Eye? When this book came out, the Black community was beside itself. Many were ashamed of the depiction of this Black family poisoned by the hate bred by racism…the hate turned to self-hate and explains why Pecola’s own father would sexually abuse his little girl; she looked JUST like him and he hated himself, he was taught that Black was ugly, that he was ugly, so how could he love himself and the splitting image of himself in Pecola?

The Color Purple also received criticism from the Black Community. Understood. The depiction of the Black Men in the story is hard to swallow. They were abusive, degrading to the women…but let’s look at the similar strain in these stories….what is the thread that would lead to Celie’s….Pecola’s…and Precious’ pain? Self-Hate…..each woman was taught to hate themselves by people who abused them as a result of their own sickness and self-hatred.

I do think we can and with the presence and symbols of the Obamas, produce films that reflect a more assured Black community. But let us not turn away from the opportunity this film and stories like it present in creating discussions around age old poisons in our community…from self-hate, poor body image, color complexes, sexual abuse, violence….these issues won’t fade in the light of more ‘positive’ film images….yes the Cosby show made us aspire to be more…but how do we get there? By knowing and loving self first…and sometimes the FIRST step is healing from the very things that have chipped away at our character and spirit….

I know the older generation doesn’t like to ‘air our dirty laundry’ but it’s stinking up our homes…and with the advent of new technologies (something else the older generation throws their nosed up at) comes the ability to get the word out…to disseminate the information…take make issues global and pull the sheet from over the ugly truths…

PEACE

CAN WE SAY GOLDEN GLODE AND OSCAR. JUT BY LOOKING AT THE SNIPPETS THAT THEY SHOWED US OF EACH CHARACTER THIS SHOULD BE SOMETHING WORTH AWARD WINNING. I’VE NEVER READ THE BOOK BUT SEEING THIS MAKE ME WANT TO GET IT AND WATCH THIS MOVIE. I NEVER KNEW THAT MARIAH COULD ACT LIKE THIS. SHE IS A VERY TALENTED PERSON AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HER IN MORE MOVIES. THEY ALL DID FANTASITC AND CONGRATS TO GABOUREY SIDIBE FOR THIS BEING HER FIRST PERFORMANCE EVER. I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL PPL CAN SEE MY STUFF ON THE BIG SCREEN. IT’S AMAZING TO ME HOW MUCH WE AS AFRICANS (ALL TIMES) HAVE SO MUCH TO GIVE TO THE WORLD. GREAT JOB EVERYONE.

I read the book several times. I always buy a copy, read it, then give it away for someone else to read. Personally, for those who feel that it is just another stereotypical black story-should understand that this book has so many redemptive moments, which is indicative of real life experiences. Many of life’s positive and negative situations come together or fall apart in a fragmented way. This story is about the process of such an overcoming spirit that says that “I will not go quietly” and that “I matter.” Please take the time to read the story, you may find the inspiration you need to get through any current hardships. Big ups to the cast, writers, directors, and producers for bringing this story to the big screen as I will be first in line to view it…

I read this book awhile ago, in my teenage years and i swear it made me so grateful for the petty shit that i had going on in my life. I tell you back in the day books were really good. now its like half the stuff on the shelves by black authors are all about some hood-rat doing some grimy shit to survive or something. Nothing that stimulates the mind at all. I loved this book, and I know I’m going to see the movie. They forgot the mention that the girl had HIV and shit. Her father was the father to them kids…shit is crazy man.

# 118, i am with you. As soon as I saw the post, I went to the bookstore and copped it. I just finished it! My heart was so heavy, at times I had to put the book down because at times it was very graphic and to think that young kids go through this on a daily basis. Also I want to point out, that some of the dialect was hard to follow because Precious was illiterate, I sometimes had to read some parts a couple of times to get the drift of the story. But great story and I cant wait to see the movie!

I so excited about this movie! I read push back in 97′ and I just adored it since. Being a NY native with roots from the south, I can understand the language used and vividly picture the sound of the vocabulary in my head. But I am thoroughly pissed that the release of the movie in the theatres will be delayed because lionsgate and another production company is filing suit against eachother, fighting over the rights to the film and who is entitled to it! Arghh! I haven’t even seen a preview and I am desperate to see this film, will see it more than once to show my support.
