You may remember our good friend Steph Jones from previous artist spotlights. But it seems that since his split with Ludacris’s Disturbing tha Peace label, Steph has taken the reigns on his career and moved forward, with the new single from his upcoming six-song EP that he plans to release entitled “Shooting Star.”
I got a chance to chat with Steph about the song and here’s what he had to say:
“The inspiration for the song came when I was sitting in my car and all of a sudden, it was a meteor shower. The whole sky was lit up for hours… And I just had to make the record,” he explained.
“I know T-Pain is the Auto-Tune dude, but the effect I put on it fits the record, so I went with it…”
I definitely love it. Although he’s using the vocoder/Auto-Tune, Steph’s voice is different from any other male crooner out there, and I think what I dig about it is the Stevie Wonder-like quality of the song. It just takes me to a different place, unlike most of the other male vocalist that we get nowadays.

Some people over use Autotune because they DONT have an ability to sing. I was fortunate to hear Steph Jones perform in London last week and this boy can blow…I counted at least 5 Octaves in his range!
Steph has been very clever in his approach in using Autotune, with the aim of portraying a concept that relates to stars, space, etc, which works… Roger Troutman did it with “Computer Love”.
This track has incredible cross over appeal, and will go worldwide, and will be on the “A” list playlist of many radio stations…
He is literally a “Shooting Star!”
Im going to have to agree with number 5…im so good damn tired of the auto tune..uts been drag thru the mud and worn out..ehhhhhhh i dont like the song and i cant see it being a hit..

The song is cool. However I agree #5 just about every hit song is in auto tune, it’s kinda played already. If this keeps up.. pretty soon people are not going to need to have a beautiful voice to be a “singer”. The auto tune crap got people classifying Kanye as a song writer/producer/rapper/SINGER!. HA!!!! Now that ish is funny!

Hey he was on Baldwin Hills last night, he knows Seiko.
That song would be 1000 times better without the auto tune. I’ll be glad when this phase is over and people get off each other’s nuts and decide to be original again and not follow the flavor of the month.

I think Steph Jones is unique, his music is real different but he is just not that great of a singer.

I love Steph jones He’s so talented! I’m really digging the song, but I think it would even better if he did a combo of his magnificent singing voice and just used a little bit of the autotune in the hook or something, but other than that it’s fire.

Steph is just awesome, for so many reasons, most importantly the songs, they’re real and catchy, good vibes, he can really sing, he’s talented! and he talks to his fans and communicates, thumbs up dude!
Great song. I think it sounds great with Auto-tune! It fits the whole vybe of the song. Unlike T-pain’s shenanighans…He played that shizzle out. But i think it sounds cool. He’s not using autotune. The device is called a vocoder. Autotune is used for pitch correction when a track is engineered.

I’m picky about my music, I don’t listen to much of the junk on the radio nowadays. But Steph Jones is different, his music just makes you feel good! He’s been hustlin’ for a minute, check out his myspace for more of his music… you definitely won’t be disappointed.
There is something so genuine about Steph Jones which fully comes accross in his material. I think he just restored my faith in young Urban music. I have heard songs he recorded before shooting star, and I think his vocals are amazing without auto-tune! He obviously hasn’t used it on this track to improve his vocals, I think it just adds to the whole vibe. I LOVE IT!!! Please keep making great music! xxxx
