NEWS BIT: BLACK HISTORY MONTH AD CAUSES A STIR

Acme Markets’ recent Black History Month circular has sparked quite the debate. The company has run the advertisement for seven years and says there has never been an issue before, but the ad is now being called racist.

Products advertised include corn bread, collard greens and grape soda. The Delaware chapter of the NAACP says more than 100 people have complained that the products perpetuate stereotypes: “It’s racist, it’s insensitive, it’s not culturally correct. Don’t assume that to celebrate Black History Month that we must have corn bread. Whoever put this ad together thought it’d be a good joke,” said Delaware NAACP President Cecil C. Wilson who demands Acme run a full-page apology in “all of Delaware’s newspapers”.

In a statement from Acme, the company said the advertisement was designed to highlight Black History Month and many of the items are products supplied through the company’s “supplier diversity program”.

“For example, Glory Foods, an African American-owned manufacturer, is featured with four of its products because it is our way of supporting and strengthening their brand with added exposure during the month of February,” the statement said.

Wilson also said Acme shouldn’t be discounting any foods specifically because it’s Black History Month. In Colonial times, slave owners would discard the remains of butchered hogs, and slaves would cook and season those parts, such as chitterlings and feet, into delicacies. The Acme ad took on a similar theme, Wilson said, by discounting Acme soda and maple syrup instead of the brand-name counterparts.

“This whole thing is cheapo,” he said. “All the products on sale are typically low-grade products that they have to clean off the shelves. I don’t know what their motive is, but it still reeks with suspicion.” [SOURCE]

There are some people with too much time on their freaking hands. Screaming “racism” at every stupid implied slight is why some people don’t pay us any attention when the real thing does happen.

What a waste of time and CL a waste of space………..sheesh.

  2. MeMyself&I

@FYBay – DO YOU SEE PICS OF THEIR RABBI’S ON SALE TOO??

GUESS NOT SO WHO IS WRONG????

  3. Carlyle

the NAACP needs some young blood. i mean c’mon now. these same ppl know they’ll be at the next funeral at the church chompin down on some cornbread and glory collards. they may as well save that money for the building fund. they ought to be thanking acme for the sale!

  4. lol

YES LOVE BLACK PEOPLE & IM PROUD TO BE BLACK, BUT I DONT THINK THIS IS RACIST..ITS FOOD THAT THEY ARE WELL AWARE THAT BLACK PEOPLE ENJOY EATING..NOW IF IT WAS MOSTLY MEXICAN FOOD , BLACKS WOULD BE COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE WE ARENT MEXICAN..LOL..BUT NAACP IS COMPLAINING ABOUT “STUPID SHIT”..REALLY, WE HAVE MORE PROBLEMS AMONGST EACH OTHER THAT NEED TO BE HANDLED!!

  5. Wayne

It’s Grape Drank ;-) they dont sell that shit

  6. D.Bell

There is the place in Pittsburgh called save-a-lot. They are located in primarily urban neighborhoods. Its strange because they will put fresh collard greens right next to hamhocks. They sell really sugary drinks, chips for cheap, and all that other stuff. There is a thin line between racists and catering to the community. People around there drink that stuff. Its not a reflection on them. It’s the same as when I go to the grocery store and they stop selling low-fat dinners. People are not eating them so they won’t sell them. They sell what people buy. The NAACP needs to focus on real issues. But I am hot they have grape soda though.

  7. ashleighTDOT

I think that some people at NAACP are mad because they went grocery shopping BEFORE the sale flyer came out. could’ve saved some SERIOUS money.

i know i get upset when i go shopping only to find out that i could have saved 5 dollars on a bagg of rice if i waited just ONE more day. that gets me sooo burned. LOL

  8. BRITTANYBEAUTY

    i love cornbread

  9. thickems

——- LOL @ grape soda —– sorry to whomever find the circular to be offensive……

  10. MONRAEA

You know Black America, it is good that we have a black president, but your taking things way out of context. How do you not know that these ads weren’t based off of a survey. You do know there are survey’s? If they don’t have the “black face” you should fall back. Stop playing the racist card all the time. I’m not saying that racism is fine is fine, cause definetly not. Nor do I think that it should be over looked even if something has been over looked for years. But this ad is fine.

  11. martinalutherking

Anyone in here who acts like they don’t love cornbread is a damn fool and a liar. I see nothing wrong w/ this ad, I’m one to jump on a racist bandwagon but this one ain’t it.

  13. strange....... but true

this is nothing but the devils backlash. all the years of my exsistence there have been persons of the other ilk that has caused us as a race/or black folks to constantly preoccupied about race issues. ‘they are in our head’. its going to have to come a time when us folks are going to have to face the FACT that there’s a segment of colored people of the other shade that hate our guts. the descendants of the tribe the bears the name of CAIN. most of them are republicans and are cacuasians now not all white folks fit in this category iam just talking to the ones that IF THE SHOE FITS. now mind you there are some black folks too that fit the bill. these are the dark-shaded descendants of cain. they are the ones that are calling for the end of black history month and saying that martin l. kings dream is fullfilled. these are the folks you better keep your eye on. its in their genes, massur is been doing alright by me is what they are claim’n. like the jews stated ‘we will never forget’ about their holocaust. now some blacks are ready to throw in the towel because there is a black prez. thinking race issues are behind us. thats them iam doing alright negro’s talk’n. you can follow them sheep’s in wolves clothing if you want. but i feel its only just begun and you can NEVER turn the lights out on black history.

  14. hood_shit

I think they taking this too far…. they crying wolf man and that messes it up when REAL shit pops off!

  15. pat

i dont drink grape soda, or eat half of the stuff on that list….so i dont think its really a bBLACK HISTORY add in that sense,,,,maybe it should be called STEREOTYPICAL BLACK HISTORY SALE or somethin

  16. wow

You know what black people when are we gonna learn… sometimes ya just need to SHUT UP!!! People are never gonna take us serious if we cry about every daggone thing. This is not racist. Black people love cornbread- its a fact- and so what?????? Is it racist to say Asians like rice?? Come on. We got to do better! If someone calls you a n*gger thats one thing but this is just ridiculous.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOW
I think I have an idea of what you were trying to say, but you really fudged it up and came off rather ignorant. You can’t boil down race, ethnic groups and nationalities to that point.

  20. Cublktigress

well it may have been someone black who came up with the idea…it may be stereotypical but let’s not front and say that those foods aren’t highly ingrained in our culture…we definitely have bigger fish to fry than tackling this ad…I love Glory’s collard greens, and black eye peas….well let’s just say Glory’s has a good line, but I also like all other types of food from asian to mexican…but I don’t do crazy rich food…I ain’t with that escargot and caviar and the expensive plates of food that look like art but the portions arent big enough to fill up a toddler….

  21. boombox

    totally agree #29.
imo, we need to start trippin about the little stuff because if they think they can get away with somethin, they’ll just keep moving right along.

if it doesnt offend you, great. but don’t try to negate the feelings of people it does offend.

and anyway, we’ve come a long way this past year. black people aint puttin up with this dumb shit anymore! hahaha

  22. TammyP

Please racist my a…..!! Where’s that store again?? Laury’s 10 for 10 bucks???

  23. lilkunta

If this has been printed 4 10 YEARS y is Delaware just not complaining?
B/c PRES BARACK OBAMA is y they feel they’re being insulted?
    Stupid.

  24. cali panamami

    is it that serious?!

hell, i wish lawry’s was that cheap in l.a.
    lol

  25. cali panamami

    [slaps #73]

i get it whatcha sayin, but hush. please.

  26. Nicki

I say we give ACME the benefit of the doubt. I can completely understand, when the rep. from ACME stated that they were especially using products submitted through their supplier diversity program. I mean on one hand we want to be acknowledged for the major accomplishments and strides that we as Black people have made and done. Then on the other hand we do not want anyone to purposely state the obvious–case in point ACME. We just can’t have it both ways–no one can including other races, women, the young, etc.

Unless evidence proves that it was malicious and meant as degradation of some type, then I say harmless and enjoy the food that you enjoy. Take the shame out of what you particularly enjoy eating and eat it.

  27. DEZMAR TYSON

lmao….COME THE HELL ON….AINT THAT WHAT BLACK PPL EAT?? IM BLACK, I LOVE CORNBREAD AND GREENS. NOT SO MUCH THE ORANGE SODA, BUT MY BROTHER LIVES ON THAT STUFF!! WE NEED TO STOP TRIPPIN SOMETIMES. WE AINT GOT TO CALL THE NAACP ON EVERYTHING. HELL WHEN CINCO DE MAYO COME DONT THEY ADVERTISE CORONA AND TAMALES??? AND THE LATINOS GO BUY IT!!! ITS GOOD INFORMATION. WE NEED TO CHILL OUT BLACK FOLK!!!

  28. Aaliyah

That’s messed up because Pick-N-Save is the popular grocery store in Milwaukee and they ran a similar ad in January and I laughed…and thought how friggin racist. I’m Black and the first time I ever had greens was at my sister’s house a few weeks ago. It’s such a stereotype…and the reality is…although I laughed to myself. It wasn’t funny!!!!

  29. Kimmie

Call me insensitive but this mess is funny! LMAO

  30. LadyCole

    why are people so sensitive.

  31. applepie

why dont the naacp protest the black guy in the grape costume for fruit of the loom underwear

  32. TRAILBLAZER

The NAACP needs to sit their fake azz down. They need to fight about unfair hiring and firing practices and other urgent disparity issues than some collard greens. Shucks, I just bought some collard greens and grape soda last week-no lie and it was damn good. It seems like they try to stay relavent by fighting fires that were put out a long time ago. I do agree that urban communities need to have more of an option for their eating and shopping needs..but ppl have to get off their azz and demand it. They have to stop waiting for gentrification to bring them a Whole Foods store. Why do white ppl have to move in before their are organic stores and side walk cafes placed on the boulevard? Step ya game up NAACP becuz right now ya’ll looking petty instead of “effective”. But on a side note I still drink grape kool-aid, it help keep me grounded. LOL

  33. brezzy bre (why im so late)

i see nothing wrong with it someone the food is something you eat at thanksgiving any way i dont eat collard greens and cornbread so i dont care much about the items they have. yea im black

  34. Khadijah

LMFAO at the Lawry’s, hot sauce, two kinds of iced tea mix, and grape soda.

At the end of the day, I really don’t see the big deal with it.

I went shopping earlier at Walmart and got half of that shiz.. only wish I would have gone to Acme for the $10 for $10.

  35. *****

PEOPLE LOVE FINDING THINGS TO MOAN ABOUT
    DISGRACEFUL
IF ANYONE SERIOUSLY FINDS THIS OFFENSIVE THEY NEED HELP.

  36. Dat NapTown Due

Can someone send me a copy of this? That’s ridiculously funny.

  37. RIP TO THE MARTYRS

there is NO right now to be offended…so put some ointment on your sensitive wounds and SUCK THAT SHIT UP!
what offends you may not offend another …so these OFFENDED people need to stop

  38. AWJ

See now I think they reachin for this one right here. I happen to like Greens and Cornbread and if they on sale thats better for me. They should just stick to big issues this isn’t one of them.

  39. fififj123

white people need to get it through their thick heads that that was the mess they gave our fore mothers to feed their children. Can you imagine working all day, being raped, slaughtering pigs and cows to feed the white family and at the end of the day, be thrown the intestines full of feces to feed to your kids! But those mothers found a way to make that slop food for their babies, they cleaned it all night, washing all that feces out and boiled it to kill more germs and then cooked in a way that their kids could eat, can you imagine the reaction these mom had looking at that pile of mess and then at their kids faces. Had to eat greens from those rip off sharecropping, but how bout they still got the iron, vit C, fiber and anti cancer nutrients from those collard greens. we ate chicken bc that was what we cld afford on that 50 cent to $1 a month from the same sharecropping where those greens came from, white people even think the food they eat is all that and look down their noses. That food is not indigenous to the Carribean and African cuisine-they eat the opposite of so called “black/soul food”Our original diet was full of fruits and spices. With all that said, the ad is offensive and derogatory, surprise they did not have a forty in there too.

  40. BigBlue10989

How long before Al Sharpton demands an investigation??? Seriously some of us are so racially oversensitive it’s ridiculous.

  41. Queen Cee

we have a black president now! we need to up our game a little bit and move forward. we tend to forget that ALL people in the south eat cornbread and collard greens, they want a good sale too!!!!! let’s not be so sensitive about dumb shit. if “they” know it bothers us, “they” will keep doing things that “offend” us.

  42. BarbaraB

@101 Grocery stores are not allowed to sell liquor in Delaware. That’s what put the Kabash on the forty.

  43. Jay

I don’t think the ad is racist at all. I mean, I usually support the NAACP and they’ve done great things for us black people, but I think this is a non-issue. Here in Toronto, Ontario I always see ads that highlight ethnic foods at certain times. No one race in particular is being targeted or made fun of. For example, at Chinese New Year they’ll have specials on Asian foods. At Caribana time (Caribbean Carnival here in Toronto) they’ll have specials on West Indian foods. So it’s no big deal really.

  44. Tommykimon

I think this ad is full of stereotypes and is racist. Not all black people eat cornbread and hot sauce this is wrong!

  45. lee

black ppl always want to have it both ways. we are proud of the fact that we eat and enjoy soul food but other ppl can’t acknowledge it? that’s ridiculous. when will we as a people ever be proud of who and what we are. jeez louise. i guess they are mad too because the models depicted don’t have afros and dashikis on. get a life!

  46. Tee

To me it is not racist at all!!! That’s what we like… Would putting some cauliflower, lobster tails, and asparagus on the ad make you feel better? We are soooo quick to say something is “racist” when I don’t even think that was the case…You see they got olive oil on there? And you know damn well black folk don’t cook with no olive oil…we use store brand vegetable oil….and some use it over and over…

  47. Diamond1

I BELIEVE THERE R CERTAIN THINGS YOU SHOULD SAY BEFORE THINGS DO GET OUT OF HAND…AND THIS MAY BE ONE OF THEM….I WENT TO THE GAS SATION NOT TO LONG AGO AND MY FRIEND AND I THOUGHT COCA-COLA HAD A RACIST AD ON THEIR SODA BOXES….THERE WAS A MIXED GIRL IN THE MIDDLE THAT KIND OF LOOKED HISPANIC, AND ON THE RIGHT THERE WAS A WHITE FAMILY WITH TWO KIDS MOTHER AND FATHER THEY HAD HEALTH FOOD AND FULL PLATES….AND THAN THERE WAS THE BLACK FAMILY ON THE LEFT, THERE WERE TWO KIDS , A MOTHER, AND A GRANDMOTHER, THERE WAS NO I REPEAT NO FATHER ON MALE IN THIS PICTURE…AND THERE WAS FRIED CKN ON THEIR PLATE’S THERE CUPS WERE HALF FULL….I REALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY PUT THAT IN STORES…ANYBODY WHO REALLY LOOKS AT IT LIKE I DID YOU WILL SEE THAT IT WAS UN CALLED FOR, ITS LIKE SAYING BLACK PEOPLE DON’T HAVE FATHERS AND GRANDMA TAKES CARE OF THE KIDS… IT REALLY BLEW MY MIND….WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT BUT YET PEOPLE DO THINGS LIKE THIS…I DON’T UNDERSTAND!!!!!

  51. Kim

they are right #110 blkack families dont really have fathers and the grandma 9 times out of 10 raises the nuckle heads while the mom goes to get laid for some more children to get food stamps that’s real talk

  52. K

LOL! this is too funny. im sorry maybe im not one to talk because im not black… but i think this issue is totally getting blown out of proportions. shoot im from california and everywhere you go you see sales on “ethnic” foods and whatnot. like at FOODS CO, which pretty much everyone knows is a supermarket that all the mexicans go to, we always got sales on mexican cheese (not even good sales btw, that ish is expensive) and lengua. or the asian markets that sell primarily asian foods or the bootleg versions. i think the only reason this is getting all crazy is because it has the black history month on top, which is kinda wrong. but then again no one be tripping when you go to popeyes or something and you know thats “black” food. or when people buy hella chicken wings on the superbowl, we all know thats what the superbowl is for. anyways… i think the NAACP needs to grow up and dude needs to quit taking it to the gutter. calling it cheapo, well duh you are getting 69 cents soda lol. hhm idk im just used to these kinda sales in my community. im from fresno, we are ghetto haha. so please let them be building one of these stores on the corner, i think id catch the whole community up in there lol. thats just my two cents…
