Disney Consumer Products and actress Anika Noni Rose, voice of Princess Tiana, unveiled a new toy line inspired by the upcoming film, “The Princess and the Frog.” The event was held at the American International Toy Fair in New York City earlier this week.
Opening Holiday 2009, The Princess And The Frog is a magical fairytale set in New Orleans that marks Disney’s return to musicals and the warmth and grandeur of 2D hand drawn animation. It also marks the first time Disney has ever had an African-American princess.
In related news, Anika Noni Rose will be co-starring alongside Jill Scott in HBO’s newest series, ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’. Set to premiere in March.

That’s really nice because is it just Vegas or have they taken the black barbies out of Wal-Mart? And is Wal-Mart the only store they’ve done that in?
Pingback: DISNEY FINALLY GETS A BLACK PRINCESS » MEANINGFUL DISTRACTION
I’m really happy about this new princess. I agree with everyone else…it was about time. Now about the name…quite frankly “Tianna” sounds more like a so-called black name than Maddy. Sounds a little made up to me…which you know we are famous for. You have to think about the time period. Maddy was a cute name 4 that era. I guess you can’t please all of the ppl all of the time.
To LILI, people of African decent, african american do have kinky hair growing from the roots, Whether it’s coily, curly, wavy, loose curly…its still KINKY. If that wasn’t the case, the perm would have never been invented.
@#64 that is so ignorant. SOME perhaps most people of African decent have kinky hair -not ALL of them, which is what she was saying. You forget that some people of African decent are also of European or other decent however much they’d like to deny/ignore it. My daughters’ hair is just straight. I barely know what to do with it because it is not kinky and that’s what I’m used to.
SMH @ the “natural” people. There is nothing wrong with anyone’s hair and changing your hair to suit yourself isn’t a manifestation of self hatred. If that were the case any form of changing your appearance would be – pearcing your body in any place, tatooing, wearing body shapers, makeup, hair color, weave, wigs, high heels, et al. Why is it that all of this is o.k. but getting a relaxer isn’t. It kills me to see some broad with an Afro shaking her head at my relaxer when she’s got a gd earring in her nose. I’m relaxing my hair to straighten it and my daughter who’s hair is straight wants box braids that will only slip out so she can look like the other black girls at school – everyone wants to change their appearance sometimes. I wish people would stop saying that it means you hate your self.
I was on this site when the first reports of this movie came out and people were complaining that “Maddie” looked ghetto and ragedy w/ her little “puff” now people are complaining that she’s been gentrified because she doesn’t have it. WTF?
#2 – Jazmine is NOT a unique name. In fact, it didn’t really fit the princess’ ethnicity. I agree w/ Buffy (#6 I think lol).

That’s She a Dreamgirls WOW>…… She Tryin Do Princess Black Barbie Person?
Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought Maddy was a white girls name (lol!). I have yet to hear a black woman with the name Maddy…
Black people are soo hard to satisfy,
1. People complain that Tiana is ghetto or whatever, but if her name was Jessica, we would protest that too
2. People complain that her hair is kinky and natural, but if it was silky and smooth, then people would complain that the character was being white washed
I honestly understand standing up for what you think is messed up, but I feel like it doesn’t matter which way they go when trying to depict black people, it will always be insulting to someone. Get over it.
You can’t pls everybody, just be happy Disney is doing a cartoon that our little girls can relate to. Dammmmmmmmmmmmmn
Wow… Thats Great that finally after I don’t know how many years, Disney has a black princess character. It’s about time, but I guess better late than never.
