Director Rachid Bouchareb, is setting up a movie on the early life of legendary civil rights activist Angela Davis (read about her life) and in a recent interview with THR, he said he wants Beyonce to play the leading role:
“I want Beyonce Knowles to play Angela Davis,” he said. “It’s a great dramatic role for her.” [SOURCE]
Bouchareb, who will produce the movie through his French production company, plans to shoot in summer 2010 with a budget in the region of $20 – $30 million.
I love Beyonce to pieces, but the acting is just not working out.

Jada Pinkett-Smith would be a better choice. Beyonce is too polished and I cannot see her doing a role like this. Jada, on the other hand is a excellent actress and has more depth to her. Beyonce honestly just needs to disappear and let people miss her already!

It’s funny how directors and other actors who are in the movie try to act like she can act just because they like her. I am tired of seeing her in movies. Oh my goodness! The idea of Beyonce in a role of this nature is laughable. She is a good entertainer, but actress and serious actress at that, she is not!
Beyonce is great at what she does (musical stage performances) and really should stick to that sort of entertainment. There are so many more (unknown) actresses that are actually talented and qualified for such a strong role (Read: IMO Traci Ellis Ross would actually be a good fit). If actresses like Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Kerry Washington, Sanaa Lathan, etc suddenly decided to release an album and go on tour how’d you feel about that? It simply wouldn’t work. SAME THING. Not to discredit Beyonce, beautiful woman with a great voice and loads of talent. Maybe she could go on Broadway or something, but please, stop with all the “serious” movie roles. Seriously.

Beyoncé what ppl dont realize is that she is growing with every performance in acting. From Carmen to Cadillac Records, she is growing and does what she has to do really well. She knows it thats the most important thing, not the awards, have a growth, growing in what u do to get better; Iknow some talented actors who dont have any awards. I dont find anything negative to say about her acting, she doesnt even have big parts (I didnt watch all her movies) Her performance in Cadillac Records was amazing and she proved she can play something different and I will see her next movie. No way, potraying Angela Davis is more than just wearing an afro. You have to have depth to carry this role, and that is something missing in Beyonce’s acting. Her acting is one dimensional and monotone. The director’s desire for her to have this role is obviously based on dollar signs. I think a wiser choice would be Jurnee Smollet. She’s a much better actress and she is already active in humanitarian causes like her foundation for young black women, so her real life experience in activism could probably translate well on screen.
Please DO NOT disrespect Angela by giving this role to Beyonce. Angela stood for education, empowerment and self-respect. Beyonce sings songs that make black women look stupid, wears a weave and couldn’t even be bothered to speak out when L’Oreal blatantly lightened her skin for that ad. Angela understood that in order for black people to move forward there needed to be respect for the family, knowledge and a consensus for change, not running down black men asking can you pay my bills and put a ring on it. It’s an insult to black cinema audiences to assume that the only way to get them to see movies is to feature a black singer/rapper. There are trained black actors and actresses out there, if you truly care about the subject of this movie, use one of them. The best films bios are when the actor playing them cares and has something in common with the person they are representing. Please do not trash Angela’s legacy in this way.
