NEWS: SHARPTON CALLS OUT NY POST FOR RACIST CARTOON

Wednesday’s NY Post features this cartoon from Sean Delonas following news that a police officer shot and killed a rampaging chimpanzee in Connecticut.

Al Sharpton issued a statement early Wednesday saying,

“The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that “Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

“Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?”

What do you think The Post is trying to say about the stimulus plan and the police shooting of an angry chimpanzee?

To express your outrage with the cartoon, send an email to the editor, Col Allan, at colallan@nypost.com, and the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, at seandelonas@gmail.com.

Wow. Im embarrassed to be from NY sometimes…

This is really racist and they deserve to be fired.

  2. The Real Why?

    wow….the cartoonist better be fired

  3. That is sad…

Cops in NY shoot black men like its nothing.

NY post runs comics like the one posted above.

A man has a store in NY that sells “N” cookies… To so called honor obama…

And I read on yahoo that 76% of white people think racism no longer exists… Are they blind?

  4. Kay

This is very disturbing. But we can’t give up the fight.

  5. #4: Do you have a link to that Yahoo story? I’d love to read that.

  6. Reese

    No they didn’t …..

  7. OOOH NASTY

Yeah they (that means ALL of them the one who wrote it AND the ones who posted it) knew what they were doing.

  8. Somad

OMG! This is so bad! I can’t believe that they outright did that and shown the assanation of the ape. With their sick reference of what is going on today with today’s events and tying it into this cartoon is a disgrace. Especially with this countries history with assinations…any joke any threat should be taken seriously. This is a disgrace to the magazine as a whole.

  9. queen tee

thats very racist!! The dumb ass who did this needs to get his/her ass whipped!!!

  10. JJ

Well, I am not surprised. It’s time for all people to open your eyes. As we celebrate black history month, many of us watch films and documentaries of the things that happened “back then”. You better recognized that “old massa” just got a new way to play an old game. Wake up people. This doesn’t mean that you should go out and be angry, beat down every white person that you see, or go so Pro-black that you can’t function in society, but it does mean that you need to educate yourself on whats going on around you. Ignorance now can be your worst enemy. I was born in Alabama, twenty minutes from the Edmund Pettis Bridge, and educated at Tuskegee University so my history has always stared me in the face. Everyone has not had these same experiences, but you can READ. Learn your history and learn from it. It makes a difference.

If I can’t say anything else, I will just lift up my hands………………………………………………………………………………………..

  12. ...........PHILLY..

YES, IT IS RACIST……PEOPLE NEED TO STOP Fu!!KING -W- BLACK FOLK …

  13. sowhat_12345678

Don’t just sit there and be outrage…send an email and complain!!!!!!!!

  14. Taj

The NY Post has a history for bigoted behavior against African Americans. It is no surprise to me about this cartoon which is sad and unfortunate because you should never get used to prejudice. However the NY Post is just proving to me once again that it is run by a moron and journalism is not their main focus because they are untalented hacks whose paper costs exactly what it is worth.

  15. sowhat_12345678

    SEND AN EMAIL AND COMPLAIN!

IF there wasn’t an email to complain too, then I would have suggested we burned that building down just to show them whose the boss!

  16. BLKSIREN

THIS IS BLATANTLy RACIST & IRRESPONSIBLE. THE CARTOONIST SHOULD BE FIRED. HOW DID THIS GET PRINTED, LIKE HOW DID IT MAKE TO THE FINAL DRAFT. THE NY POST AS A WHOLE IS WRONG FOR THAT.
EFF EM LET’S BOYCOTT, I’M TIRED OF STUFF LIKE THIS.
GET OVER IT RACIST BASTARDS, OBAMA IS THE PRESIDENT!!!!!
    WHITE FOLKS HATE BLACK SUCCESS

  17. CHANGE

For once, I completely agree with Mr. Sharpton.

    Mr. Col Allan,

Although I understand that political cartoons are supposed to be taken with humor and a grain of salt, I find that your recent illustration in reference to the Stimulus Plan to be a disgrace, highly offensive, and unacceptable. By no means should images such as these be published especially after a major step has been taken forward by the American people by electing our new President. Not only should you be ashamed of yourself and your ignorant, insensitive, and unethical display of nonprofessional behavior, but you should consider finding a more constructive use for such negative energy. Do better, because this is NOT acceptable.

  18. @ J. Dakar

I will go and look for it. It came out right before the elections.

  19. CHANGE

BTW, people please send emails! Dont just sit around complaining and being outraged. Change comes through ACTION.

  20. OOOH NASTY

    @4 juicy
They not blind they know that it still exist. There is a dormant racism that still exist that white folks want to keep. Have you heard about how they talk about Mexicans (taking jobs from them) , about Asians + Arabs (white children are going to have to compete with in college and for future jobs). They figure that have one leg up on black ppl & that black ppl aren’t a threat to them, & they took away affirmative action by protesting these statements (that racism doesn’t even exist anymore). To admit that racism still exists the nation would have to enact affirmative action to its fullest (in every state) & African Americans may actually get a chance at receiving reparations (sp?). During the election it was clearly broadcast world wide that racism still exists. Don’t believe that crap.

  21. U M V Me

The NY Post is IGNANT for publishing that mess!

  22. dukesman2000

—-Lmao. I am mad at Black people for not thinking about this a long time ago.
—–Get monkeys to slap the sh!t outta white people…lol

—-White people are so bitter. I never could understand why they associated
—-Black people with monkeys. I saw a hairy white man at the gas station last night
—-and he looked more like a monkey than any Black person I know….lol

—-On a serious note, what the h*ll was that white woman doing with that monkey in
—-the first place? It is unfortunate the monkey had to die when he was unwillingly
—- placed in this quagmire. But white people will try to domesticate any animal. And
—–they will take care of the animal better than how they’d take care of their own kids.
—–Have you ever seen those white people and their dogs? They pick up the dog sh!t
—– with their hands but hire someone to change their baby’s diapers.

  23. U M V Me

I can get with the police shooting the Chimp cause that’s real news, but the caption took the cartoon to a whole ‘nother level.

  24. drea1227

Wow! I never buy the post anyway.Every minority should boycott the paper, because obviously the only color they know is green , then when they are facing bankrupty,go to washington and beg President Obama for a bailout .Karma .SO un called for and very distasteful.

  25. YIC

Remember the NY Post is also owned by the same people who own Fox News. What a Shame…

  26. Reese

Ooooh, You better believe I’m sending an email. This blatent disrespect will be addressed.

This is sooo crazy, it’s straight up old school racism from the 30′s, no underlying, implied underhanded racism by questining Obama’s competence to do his job because of his race, they straight up called him a monkey, incredible.

  27. sowhat_12345678

You can’t even send an email because the mail box isn’t responding or something!

  28. @11 Great Post

    @ 6
I will keep looking for the yahoo poll but here is an article by Fox. At the bottom of the article it references the yahoo poll as well.

    http://www.foxnews.com/wi...PollRaceinAmerica,00.html

“The poll, however, shows that blacks and whites see racial discrimination in starkly different terms. When asked “how much discrimination against blacks” exists, 10 percent of whites said “a lot” and 45 percent said “some.”Among blacks, 57 percent said “a lot” and all but a fraction of the rest said “some.”Asked how much of America’s existing racial tension is created by blacks, more than one-third of white respondents said “most” or “all,” and 9 percent said “not much.” Only 3 percent of blacks said “most” or “all,” while half said “not much at all.”Nearly three-fourths of blacks said white people have too much influence in American politics. Only 12 percent of whites agreed. Almost three times as many blacks as whites said blacks have too little influence.”

  29. Chrystal

We must email the editor! Even if he’s not fired, we have to be heard. This is totally racist and I don’t see the humor AT all. I’m forwarding his email address to as many people as possible. This was mentioned on the Tom Joyner morning show.

  30. natalie

This is crazy people need to accept the fact that we have a black president in office. Get over it, damn!

  31. irrational rationalist

oh HELL NO!…i cant stand this place(America) sometimes…most the time

  32. irrational rationalist

    this world rather

  33. MR. COOL

Why do the monkey have to be black and why do the caption say “SOMEONE” when the stimulus bill was created by a team of people who were at least 80% white?

Damn! This is some really sad shit here? I think the NY Post Editor and the Cartoonist should be fired!

  34. becca

oh my lord. you have got to be kidding me.

  35. There's a blessing in the storm...

What a ridiculous cartoon…. I tried sending an email to the address you listed but it came back “undeliverable”.. is there another email address to send my complaint. Please Black citizens BOYCOTT the NY times!!!

  36. MR. COOL

Please someone post the NY Post Editor’s email address. If I lived in NY, I would boycott the paper until he is fired.

  37. yumyo (1 month old bebe)

Wow, born and raised in the heart of NYC, I am deeply saddened by NYPost comic strip. But not surprised since The Post and Rush Limbaugh are cronies….

  38. OOOH NASTY

Yeah I tried to send an e-mail too & its not working.

  39. janee

  40. I am sick tired of being sick tired

In some countries, this guy and the editor would be already DEAD! Do anyone think the cartoonist should be killed over his piece?

  41. Here is the racist cartoonist personal email address

THE CARTOONIST WHO WROTE TODAY’S DISGUSTING AND OFFENSIVE CARTOON IS SEAN DELONAS… HERE IS HIS PERSONAL EMAIL……
    seandelonas@gmail.com

  42. TRUTHBTOLD

Say that #18, That there is all that needs to be said and for editor who approved this crap. They should be ashamed as well!!! Who would think that anyone of color would find this humorous, is an idiot. I’m so pissed I can’t even say what I want to say!!

  43. sowhat_12345678

The editor shouldn’t be just fired; that fool should be roughed up (if not worse!).

Black folks, we don’t get respect by simply asking a person to get fired. Forget turning the other cheek! We get respect through a fist!

No magazine has ever dared publish anything bad about mohammed when the arabs nearly killed some danish cr@ck@ for messing with their prophet! We should do the same thing!!!

  44. OOOH NASTY

    @ juicy
‘And I read on yahoo that 76% of white people think racism no longer exists… Are they blind?’
I know that was a rhetorical question, my apologies, I just got heated.

  45. Trenton, NJ Resident

………….This sh!t Is not funny so why is it in the comic section??????? And they
…………..wonder why black people get so ignorant at times because we reflect on
…………..dumb shit lokre this. Fu(k Them salty ass crackers .. Mad because OUR

    .

  46. WTF. . .

This is ignorance @ its best!

  47. whateve

This is extremely demeaning to the african american race!!!

The NY Post should immediately retract it and issue an apology to the enitre african american community!!!

  48. Reese

Yeah, I need the editor to the NY posts email address or the email to the News paper, I’m nto gonna bother with the small fish, They are not goint to just fire the cartoonist and think they’ve pacifiered the situation, I want to deal with the people who greenlit this to go through.

  49. YOU GUYS NEED TO CHILL. SITTING AND MOPING ABOUT RACISM IS LAME. IT EXIST AND IT WILL ALWAYS WILL EXIST. I DO NOT VIEW THE CARTOON AS BEING RACIST, THE CARTOON IS FUNNY. ALL I GET IS THAT THE POLICE SHOT A CHIMP, THE STIMULUS PLAN IS CRAZY… HENCE THE CARTOONIST IS PLAYING ON ALL OF THAT, IT(STIMULUS PLAN) MUST HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY A RAGING LUNATIC. BLACK PEOPLE (I AM A BLACK AS A WELL) EVERYTHING IS NOT ABOUT YOU. THE PRESIDENT BEING BLACK DOES NOT EXCLUDE HIM FROM BEING MADE FUN OFF. I ALSO DON’T THINK THE NEW YORK TIMES SALES WILL SUFFER IF BLACK PEOPLE BOYCOTT AS IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T THE MOST AVID READERS AND I AM INCLUDING MYSELF. BEING A BLACK PERSON MYSELF, I HOPE THAT ONE DAY OTHER BLACK PEOPLE WILL GET PASSED THE COMPLEX OF HAVING WHAT ANOTHER ETHNICITY THINKS OF YOU AFFECT YOU OR TAKING AS BEING ‘GOSPEL’. ON A SIDE NOTE I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD BE ALLOW TO SPEAK THEIR MINDS, EVEN RACISTS, I PERSONALLY MUCH RATHER KNOW WHAT A PERSON’S THOUGHTS ARE RATHER THAN BEING AROUND PRETENTIOUS PERSONS. PLEASE GUYS JUST CONCENTRATE ON IMPROVING YOURSELVES AND DON’T ALLOW THE OPINION/STEREOTYPES OF OTHERS TO DEFINE YOUR LIVES AND BEINGS.

  51. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

stop being so ultra sensitive.. this was NOT racist.. goodness people… get over it.

  52. sowhat_12345678

@ 55: Thank you! Maybe number 54 can do the same and gets his or hers salty white ass off this blog.

  53. Secret Life of Me....

Well the NY Post is equivalent to second grade reading level so it’s understandable that this type of racist illustration would come from them. I have never purchased a copy of The Post although I have skimmed thru a copy and I do know from a male friend that they have or had the best sports section.

I know quite a few people that don’t like Sharpton however without him there are a lot of things that would slip thru the cracks and he rallies up and does the dang thing. Everyone has their purpose. So make sure you write an intelligent letter or email in support and change toward media racism. I was think ing this morning that a lot of media venues esp CNN and their guests sometime slip a couple of racist remarks in during commentary… Some good old boys are tee’d off by PResident Obama and whenever they can they get it . !

  54. Horse.head.nebula…. good to see one person shares the non racist sentiments of the cartoon

  55. The Wayno Show

The NY Post should be ashamed of themselves! How can not see that cartoon as racist? What America are they living in? I will never support anything that the NY Post is a part of.
