NEWS: SHARPTON CALLS OUT NY POST FOR RACIST CARTOON

Wednesday’s NY Post features this cartoon from Sean Delonas following news that a police officer shot and killed a rampaging chimpanzee in Connecticut.

Al Sharpton issued a statement early Wednesday saying,

“The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that “Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

“Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?”

What do you think The Post is trying to say about the stimulus plan and the police shooting of an angry chimpanzee?

To express your outrage with the cartoon, send an email to the editor, Col Allan, at colallan@nypost.com, and the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, at seandelonas@gmail.com.

You’re going very hard on an issue in which you have no wins, lol. You’re platform revolves around people assuming racism because they are not aware of the story concerning the out of control chimp, but many people on this thread (including myself) are from NY and are aware of the story. The point is that the story was used as an occasion to take a shot at the supposed “stimulus package”, the warranted use of police brutality on “out of control” black males, and the ethnicity of the “president” at the same time. As I said, it is an extended metaphor. Quite honestly, you’re not dropping any knowledge whatsoever. The only thing you’re doing is showing your house negro pedigree. At a major periodical outlet like the New York Post, where a visual depiction has to be planned, plotted, and brought before a series of editors, do you actually believed that no white person at the Post could see a tint of racism? Not even a, “Naw, the blacks aren’t going to like this.”? I mean please. You have to be a complete idiot to believe that (which is possible based on your commentary). This is undoubtably a concerted attempt to kill about 3-4 birds with one satirical stone, and it was well-done.

  2. SANTIGOLD FAN

Obama DID NOT write the Stimulus Bill. If I recall, it was all under Nancy Pelosi and company. While yes, Sean Delonas DOES have his fair share of racist, homophobic, and sexist cartoons, I do not feel this is one of them, given what has occurred in the past few days. Those of you who are riled up are equating the African American community and Obama to being chimpanzees. The mere fact that this crappy cartoon is garnering this much attention over nothing (well, it’s over nothing IMO) says it all. If we aren’t [insert racial slur here], then don’t respond to it! An angry e-mail will not accomplish a damn thing. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if the man is getting a raise as I type this.

Let’s save the race card for a situation that’s actually worth it :)

Okay, I am offended by this “article/cartoon”. Now whoever drew this picture was most definitely talking about our current brillant, intelligent, President Mr. Barack Obama. Who the hell left the gate open for this mess to be published??? In my opinion, the cartoonist and editor should be disciplined to the fullist, if there were a cartoon with african americans police shooting a pig I bet you that we would a major problem not only would the cartoonist and editor be fired but the newpaper would probably be made to shut down and every article pulled from newsstands. My father always said that racist was alive, but we(the young generation) are seeing it in different forms. We(African Americans) need to stick together during “Our President’s next 8 years and one day we will over come all of this racism and become as one.

i feel like they proved how i feel about america and whites that ive encountered and other blacks i know is that they threatened and scared like theyve always been the reason being is they know they foul we know they foul 2 so why the f we keep lettin them get away wit it nother story on the cartoon they can color all they like but MR PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is the first BLACK PRESIDENT whether they like it or not deal wit it like blacks have for hundreds of years balls in our court now

This goes a long way to tell us all that racism and resentment is far from over in this island we call home. as far as the sun rises in the morning, race relation between blacks and whites will continue to be a problem even though we have a black president. I have and will continue to tell people, Obama was elected for his charm, charisma and because he seems to be passing the right message and not because race relations has disappeared into oblivion. infact i believe racial resentment between whites and blacks has increased dramatically after the election. Blacks chants and sing of the victory after years of being regarded as second class citizens. Moments like this tends to resurrect the hatred that has long been partiallyy buried. A white dude that lives in the suburb or a major city said this to me and i quote, “you guyz are now happy becuae u have won, just watch how he will be killed”….I just think blacks should be conscious of the feelings of new generation white folks, and instead of chanting “the first african american president”, they should just say, “the 44th improbable president”….its makes sense although to stand up for black pride after years of being in the dark, but blacks should remember that new generation of white enormously voted for Obama.

This is a call to action! Like president Obama call for community organizers around the country, this is a call for community action! We need to show our displeasure and outrage from this depiction by hitting these narrow minded racist where it hurts; in the wallet! Stop buying their publicatons, cancel your subscription, protest them and their sponsors!

If we want to truly bring about change, money talks, and the lack of it makes them wake up and see a better way!

***********Not enough words to express about this foolishness!************

  9. Chet R.

Very disturbing. The press is really going out of its way to re-enforce and promote racism. This is why peace can’t happen in this country. The power of the news media continues to keep racism alive and well in America. This kind of thing confirms what’s on the minds of people who are in control of what gets published by the NY Post. How can the editors allow this kind of thing to continue to happen! Maybe because it helps to sell newspapers…

  13. this is the tip of the iceberb

racist white people and even non racist white people have only BEGUN their antics. wait until the t-shirts and bumper stickers come out… pop culture as we know it will change, and it will incite world wide race riots.

we’ll be so divided that only a illuminati like power will be able to save us from destroying one another…

    everything is by design….

  14. Tianni

Sometimes, I notice these political cartoons featured in the news papers can be sarcastic & over the top alot of tmes

But this specific cartoon has CROSSED THE LINE! My coworker sent me a text (fowarded) asking to boycott/protest the NEW YORK POST news paper about this specific cartoon. I stopped supporting THE NEW YORK POST even before finding out they didn’t support the DEMOCRATS/OBAMA-BIDEN during the presidiential campaign. Its just a WACK news paper any way. They wont get a cent from me!

  15. Tianni

Here in NEW YORK there was head lines news made on a CHIMP that went wild on its owner just yesterday (all over the news & in the papers as well), The cops actually had to catch the ape…the owner was crying & upset over the whole thing. Not sure if the cartoonist took that incident & ran away with the concept to link it with OBAMA,,,Im sure the chimp story played apart in this cartoons creation. Its STUPID & WRONG. Only simple minded, ignorant, naive, one track mentality individuals would create a cartoon such as this.

    ITS FLAT OUT RACIST!

  16. kmniles

    Jay

Know your history (you know…the one that caucasians are always trying to leave in the past) and do your own research. Your astute forefathers have always tried to dehumanize us by attempting to link blacks to apes. For someone who is trying to portray himself as being well versed in political satire you sure are ignorant to the ramifications of this cartoons timing and political climate. I suggest you spend a few dollars and take some cultural studies classes or read a book on the subject to help bring to light what is obvious to the naked eye for most people.

  17. Lamar James

Yea, very interesting right here. We blogged about this on our site. Im going to go with racism. the similarities are too close for comfort.

  18. plastiQ

So much for HOPE AMERICA. So much for blurring racist lines. Seems like white America only wnated a fall guy…who else to bear it than a near-NIGGA. Who are we kidding?

Even us in Africa know better.

  19. danny

IM 57 yr. old white male living in mid america.. i find the cartoon in terrible taste, i personally find that trash as treason.. all americans should be hoping he gets us out of this mess. pres. george bush got us in too. ..and a war were not going to win! americans had better get together it could get far worse..

  20. kids next door

racism is alive and doing just well!!

  21. MICHAEL OLIVER

ITS TOO BAD STILL TODAY OF THE WAY THIS GREAT NATION’S PEOPLE ARE STILL TROUBLED BY RACIAL DIFFERENCES.

THIS CARTOON SAYS IT ALL. THAT RACISM IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE AMONG US. ITS A SHAME THAT IN THIS GREAT NATION OF OURS A PERSON IS MEASURED MOSTLY BY THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN INSTEAD OF THE COLOR OF THEIR CHARACTER.

THE THING THAT BOTHERED ME WAS THE NY POST POSTED THIS CARTOON ANYWAY. I’M SURE IT HAD TO PASS OVER THE BIGS BEFORE IT WAS PRINTED.

MY GRANDMOTHER HAD TOLD ME, WHENEVER SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD OCCUR, ‘BABY BOY, GOD HAS A SPECIAL PLACE FOR THE NOT SO SPECIAL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD.

AFTER THIS, NY POST IS THE NOT SO SPECIAL.

  22. Shannon

this is absolutely horrible and embarrassing! i find it hard to believe that in 2009 this type of racist thought would pop into someone’s minded. But to draw it and publish it is unconscionable! i imagine the cartoonist and editor must be in or over their 60s due to this kind of racist hatred. i’m as white as can be & this just makes me sick.

  23. Brittney

    WTF…I’M SPEECHLESS…

  24. TAM

Since the President doesn’t actually WRITE the bill-congress does-could it be that Congress is being called a bunch of monkeys? I don’t see anyone complaining about the Careerbuilder.com commercial with all the monkeys in it dressed as employees, and there are plenty of us that DO have jobs. The saying a “trained monkey could do that job” comes to mind when people are referring to idiots doing things that a majority doesn’t agree with.

  25. Mike

Racist cartoon, editors and writer should be fired.

Racism will always exist. What I believe is that the amount of racist people are dwindling. A Black president was elected and of course there was no chance of that without carrying a significant white vote. Thos polls are ridiculous, of course white people are going to state the politically correct answer.

There are still white people who hate black people just like there’s black people who hate white people. Shown by some of the posts on here…

  26. Andre

Its clearly referencing congress not Obama…

  27. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

@Brittany.. you’re dumb… it goes ‘Blacks will not be told to GET back”
dumb… just dumb… its a reference to an old saying.. dumb…

  28. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

@JUDAH…..lol at you calling me a house negro because I dont think this was a racial thing. Why cant someone make a reference to a primate? Why is it that WHEN a reference to a primate is made, black people automatically think that its an insult to them?? If this was a rabid dog or a dog on Xanex it would not be an issue.. ..HEy People.. guess what.. . when someone is talking about a monkey or chimp they not ALWAYS trying to take a snap at Black folks… simmer down and stop being so sensitive..

  29. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

OH.. and Judah.. YOU’RE = you + are. .. I think you wanted to say ‘YOUR’ platform

  30. Usain

All Al sharpton has to do is open his mouth, and y’all follow whatever he says like sheep. Sharpton needs to STFU

cartoon doesn’t offend me at all

I am more offended by blacks goofing off in college and flunking out, I am more offended by the way so many rappers portray black women in videos

Before we can properly address racism we should address how we view each other. Al Sharpton only seems to talk about unity when its to go against the white man. He is doing you a great disservice

  31. Kaleidascope

I read it and didnt take offense because Obama didnt write the stimulus package. Congress did. However I do believe they understood the consequences of publishing the cartoon. They knew most people assume since this is Obama’s first victory as president and it’shis face yoou see when you hear about the package, that most people would take offense. Nonetheless, white people are totally ignorant on the whole race issue. Why? because they are the race that counts. Unless they are immediately affeced my what’s going on, they dont give a shit

  32. Kaleidascope

Usain…I totally agree. we are quick to get angry when someone else points out our truthful flaws. Black folks STFU and get a grip on reality. Fix yourselves first…then we can kick racisms ass.

  33. JUDAH

    ——-@HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

——-Hey; the drug is “X-A-N-A-X”, not “X-A-N-E-X”, since we want to play the petty
——-game. Lmao. Furthermore, you are a house negro because you do what the
——-house negro is trained to do, which is guard the master’s house (that being his
——-societal structure). Any fool knows that this “stimulus package” is associated
——-with Barack Obama. If the cartoon were in reference to the actual crafter(s)
——-(plural) of the bill, you’d have a better case if they slew a pack of chimps. It’s
——-only 1 chimp, and the depicted police officer refers to only one entity. Really the
——-only case one could possibly plead for the comic illustrator was naivete in
——-regards to who writes bills as opposed to who signs them. The chimp rather
    ——-blatantly represents Obama.

  34. Rayne

CRIMINAL CHARGES should be brought against the cartoonist, editor and paper. This type of publcity is a threat to the President and can’t be tolerated. If it had been drawn in regards to the previous presidents it would not have been tolerated and the person would have been arrested and interrogated all day and night. Yes we have made it to the top position, great BUT, we want all the attributes that go along with the position!!!!! Where are ALL OUR BLACK AGENCIES??? They should be holding press conferences demanding prosecution!!!!! They established the rules NOW they must be play by them as well!!!!

  35. better than u

if he wasnt a monkey it wouldnt be offensive.

  36. Joseph

Though appalled at the cartoon and caption, I am NOT surprised at the numerous attempts to hide racism under a “freedom-of-speech” blanket. I am reminded of a wise man’s words, “I have more respect for a man who lets me know where he stands, EVEN if I think he is wrong, than one who acts like an angel, but is nothing but a devil.” (Malcom X)

Our response should be to organize a boycott of the NY Times and damage its “stimulus package” – profits! Moreover, why have we not heard an outcry from PETA?

  37. Ayoka

Make your voice heard! The New York Post has an African American readership as well and usually the only way these corporations will hear your voice and change their content to reflect their readership is through their wallets….UNSUBSCRIBE and let them know why. Below is what I sent:

    To: ‘colallan@nypost.com’
    Cc: ‘seandelonas@gmail.com’
    Subject: Cartoon or Racist Retaliation?

To: Editor in Chief of New York Post

As a politically active African American woman, I am both outraged and appalled at the poor judgment that you as Editor in Chief of a widely circulated news magazine have displayed in running Sean Delonas’ derogatory, obviously racist cartoon. Despite having a wonderful editorial content in the past (and not content that I have always agreed with by the way), your magazine has stooped to a Barbaric low in running such a blatantly negative, poorly executed, and socially unacceptable piece.

Pray tell, is this the New York Post’s way of taking a pot shot at its educated African American readers and at the African American public in general?

In these changing times, disagreement and discomfort at the changing of the guard is expected. If your magazine’s subscription base and constituency has in the past been a majority of card carrying Bush supporters, then so be it. However, it would do your management a disservice to imply that the portion of the population depicted in this cartoon will take lightly the implications embedded therein. There are overtones of assassination and institutionalized violence, promotion of antiquated racist tenets, and expression of a general disdain for my people. It seems especially insensitive to this sector of your readership during what appears to be an uptick in shootings of unarmed African American males. However, as an American staple and the voice of many, this magazine has certainly made a special point to alienate that sector of your readership and the general thinking public as well.

    Shame on you!

In this day and age one would think that the educated public, having elected an African American President, would express their moral outrage at this poor decision by cancelling their subscriptions to the New York Post. Believe that I will be sure to promote that action as thoroughly as I can! Each of the people that I know that subscribe to your magazine for social relevancy will be certain to receive a copy of the cartoon and urged to unsubscribe.

    Outraged!

I sent my e-mail. Rather they respond or not, I want my voice to be heard, because that right there is some bull shit. I didn’t realze how outraged I was until I started typing the e-mail. My words were just flooding out of me and I coudn’t stop. Thank you Concreet Loop for posting the e-mail address of the cartoonist and the editor. You guys do a great job posting important information as well as entertainment. I remember when the Jena 6 petition was going on, this is one of the only places where I found a link to add my name, and I thank you guys for that. keep doing what cha doing:)

  39. Diana Jones

We have a BLACK PRESIDENT. I have watched and I have observed and it makes me sick to the pit of my stomach to see how he is being DISRESPECTED. It is so obvious that certain people, mainly white men, can not get passed the FACT that we have a BLACK PRESIDENT. I have never heard such outward disrespect towards any other president. We already know that if we don’t get your character straight one of you are going to slip up and call him a Nigga, or should I say the N word. You are totally out of line. You are totally disrespectful and you didn’t have all of that lip and month 8 years ago. NO I don’t like that so called CARTOON! Who do you think you are? I ask again, Who in the heck do you think you are? I have always wondered about a race of people who can come to America and claim it as theirs, although there were Native American’s here, but you woke up one day and decided to get in a ship and sail for who knows how long and land in the Continent of Africa and bring back what you called a slaves to wipe your butts and tend to your cleaning and cooking and farming and to make the women your sex slaves and have your babies. I often wonder about the mind set of a race of people who think like that. You continue to think like this two hundred years later. I have a poem in my personal that reads like this: We traveled many miles, we traveled for so many days to come to a land where we would be a slave. What kind of place can this be Where a man is not free? We were given a task and separated by class. We were brought and sold like precious GOLD. We were called names as our Masters held claim. What kind of place can this be where a man is not free? How long did they think it would last, treating us like outcast? The time would soon come when we would learn how to run. “Wade in the water” and I’ll meet you in about a quarter-pass that midnight hour. MY GOD give US POWER! With our hearts beating hard like a drum We knew that day would soon come. HALLELUJAH!!! That day came to be. THANK GOD I AM FREE!!!!.
You better recognized because yes WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT.

  40. jessica

this is foolishess!!!! I’m Canadian and this not exceptable period!!! They really need to shut them down and the post needs to get a life and do something postive with their news!!! Post have too much time in their hands going on stupid, GET A LIFE INGORANT ASSES!!!!

  41. Southernbelle

This is a threatn against the President of the United States and should not be taken lightly.

  42. ZULU

I agree with most of what JUDAH said in post 135, especially the last paragraph.

What bearing does some spineless insecure white f*ggot have on my life? They are not even man enough to look a black man in the face in real life. Subliminal jabs are for pussies. Anyone with half a brain would be cognizant of the fact that their worthless empire is toast. Asians and Arabs are f*cking them hard and all black people do is get emotional for no reason.

This is trivial at best and black people are ridiculous.

  43. Money Magnet

While everyone is up and arms, just like old opportunistic race card pulling Al Sharpton told yall asses to be, did any of you actually follow this stimulus bill??? Do you know anything about it other than the fact that you may receive a check from Uncle Sam?? I seriously doubt it. President Obama did not write this bill, Congress did. This stimulus bill has been Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s baby since it’s creation back in late October 2008. Congress was going to present this to President Bush, but due to the fact that everyone couldn’t agree on amounts and content, they decided to wait until after Obama was in office to present it to him. There is no way in hell Obama could have written a 1700 page bill and run a presidential campaign. Please stop smoking crack!!

And the fuggin chimp was referring to the 200 lb chimp that had to be shot because he mauled that caucasian lady in Connecticut.

While I admit the cartoon was in poor taste because the lady is in the hospital, the only people who should be offended is Congress (especially Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid) and the victim of the attack. There was no reference in that cartoon to our president or our race whatsoever. Therefore it was not racist!!!

It’s so sad that there are so many fuggin mindless followers in our community. Will the real leaders PLEASE STAND UP!!!! Can someone please Al Sharpton’s ass a hefty fine for faulty race card pulling????

  44. Money Magnet

    **Correction**
That’s “Can someone please GIVE Al Sharpton’s ass a hefty fine for faulty race card pulling?”

  45. jessica

I’m sorry, it not acceptable period, Its wrong and Al Sharpton has a right to boycott this crap!!! There is soo much things is going on in this world and the post decides to to this as ratings?? Give me a break, and I think America needs to stop the racism crap, it over, it 2009 get over it. What next if you have a chinese president or a spanish president, this foolishness is going on too??? I agree with Al Sharpton and everyone to boycott this Paper!!!

  46. Rochelle

This cartoon just shows African Americans that although we’ve come a long way, we haven’t come far enough (in their eyes). I feel like this cartoon shows us (African Americans) how a lot of Americans still view us….we will never be good enough in their eyes..we will always be n****rs! It sucks because this is the America we must live in, this is what we must go through EVERY DAMN DAY and dare we retaliate! Dare we publish something like this….or even draw something of this nature…our lives are over! To me, this is nothing but a “Remember your place” message….

  47. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

Judah.. why do black folks always need an apology?? Why are people always looking for one…??? Why? Give me a break.. take your blinders off. You can never get anywhere in life if you’re always trying to be a victim. If you see this cartoon as insulting….. you are looking at it from a VICTIM’S point of view. I am not a victim so I guess I dont look at it that way….. you do… so … if the shoe fits….

  48. HORSE.HEAD.NEBULA

OH>. and Judah… I dont know how to spell Xanax… because I’m not on it.. I guess you would.. being that you see it on your medicine cabinet every night…. lol (Just playing)…. anyway… I DO know English.. though… lol

  49. OMG

r u serious im sick and tired of all this racism it needs to stop!!

  50. Stay True

I have to assume that the NY post has NO BLACKS on it’s editors staff ! There is no way this would have gotten through. Or maybe the editor was Michael Steele…

  51. Tiara

Racist white people just mad that it’s a black mans’ world now go sit down and solve some cases. These officers have to much time on their hands! FIRE THEM!!!!!

  52. IGOTTASAYIT

If Bush were still President and this cartoon was published we would look at it as if they were saying that Bush was as dumb as an out of control ape for his politics. But since President Obama is in the White House the same cartoon is taken as if someone is saying Obama is an ape, Which of course He is not. People lighten up I am sure it was not meant the way most people are reacting to it…and yes I am Black!
