SNEAK PEEK: BET’S NEW REALITY SERIES ‘HARLEM HEIGHTS’

Check out this sneak peek of BET’s new reality series, ‘Harlem Heights,’ think ‘Baldwin Hills’ for 20-somethings..

Dubbed as a half-hour reality docu-drama, the show highlights the ups and downs of several young, African-American professionals struggling to balance hectic work schedules with complicated social lives. The series is set to premiere Monday, March 2nd at 10pm EST.

I’m not going to lie, it looks interesting. I just hate when they try to pass something off as real. We all know this is scripted, but hey we’ll see how it turns out.

I agree, it looks very scripted.
But at least they’re trying to show African Americans in a more positive light.

  2. pz

top ten…i think! it actually looks very good! i appreciate that it’s far from baldwin hills (which i hate because it tries to be like laguna beach) i can respect black ppl on the grind career oriented and making something of themselves! and it has fashion all up and through it! i’m def watching!

  3. LISALOVE

    I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…..HARLEM STAND UP!!

  4. Q*U*E*E*N

  5. DCELLA

actually, it doesnt seem scripted to me.. but either way it looks good. clearly this is like the black version of The City on MTV. lol

  6. no thank you

the show is definitely scripted for the most part (the relationship parts anyway). They were casting in my area a few months back.

Looks good though and it’s entertainment, so I’ll probably watch it when I’m bored.

  7. Kim

Looks interesting, but yeah I am getting the feeling that its scripted!

  8. Q*U*E*E*N

the best part of this snippet was the end!!! not just because it was over… but because it talked about obama!!! WOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!… hmph… idk…. maybe i will end up watching this bs… anothr show to tivo… FOR CRYING OUT LOUD YO!!!

  9. Diaz

    I will definitely be watching!

  10. bella

hmmmm ill leave the verdict out on this one till i watch a full show.

  11. FATIMA

When BET was bought by CBS,which also owns MTV,it seems like they are trying to turn BET into a black MTV,they concentrate on selling to the public ,shows like Harlem Heights, which isn`t very original and is nothing but a cheaply made low budget copy of a popular MTV show. I will not be supporting BET until they start coming up with original programming,BET is not free! The people who pay for it,are entitled to original programming, and not cheaply made, low budget imitations of shows that are hits on MTV.

  12. bella

ye’s ex girl is on the show too. Drama lol

  13. Queen Bee

Yea I agree also, it do look scripted

I wouldn’t watch it. Its just for t.v. Look at Baldwin Hills, its scripted and you can definitely tell.

  14. bella

preach on it fatima thats how i feel with baldwin hills which is a black lagunabeach-hills hybrid. This almost feels like the City but with added socio-conscious efforts. I

  15. ANDWHAT?

It bears repeating that this is definitely scripted. They all are. looks good though. I almost didnt recognise Kanyes ex-girlfriend Brook. She looks cute with her hair cut.

  16. Lauryn

FATIMA – U ain’t lying. Just another The Hills BET has become really wack. Do y’all remember when was so bomb now they are boring. I don’t have BET (waste of money imo) but when/if they step it i’ll support them. the only show i watched on BET kinda recently was KEYSHIA COLE’s the way it is but actually that was a while ago…

  17. no thank you

yeah that is kanye’s ex. here is concrete loop’s post about her when she was promoting the show:

  18. Young But Very Gifted

For certain,BET,is run and owned by white people now,it is basically a white television network, that is fronted by black people.I would rather see creative new shows, something that I have`nt seen on MTV. How about BET doing a reality TV series about Chris Brown.Or a reality show on Beyonce! or take some inner city kids from Harlem and send them over to Africa and see how they interact with African kids. The point is I want to see something new and fresh, everybody is doing a show on 20-somethings like Harlem Heights, been there, done that!

  19. yea whatever

How is “scripted” a reallity show? The two are very different — maybe Angel meant to write “unscripted.” Because a scripted show is not reality.

  20. Lisa

Well, it actually looks interesting and it seems like it will appeal to my age group and not just the teeny-bopers

  21. Greatestloveofall

ONLY thing ima be checkin this show for is them fineass brothers Pierre and Jason lol!

‘Scripted’ reality show wtf that don’t even make it reality. Its BET so its just a cover up gimmick for more foolishness imo.

  22. REALeyes

you can tell that they’re actors.. i doubt i’ll like it..

    REALeyes.

  23. kelvin

i dont think so. i think ill pass on this old ppl show. im young and i dont think i wanna watch something that shows the hardship of growing up. stay young forever!!!!

  24. Marcus Diaz

This is something that I truly wish that BET would do,instead of giving us another MTV clone, and that is do a show about black latinos. This would help to educate the public about black latinos,90% of all African slaves were taken to spanish speaking countries around the world,we outnumber Mexicans in Latin America, worldwide we number over 200,000,000 and the last census indicated that the black latino population is growing in America, yet we are constantly ignored by the media,as if we don`t exist.

  25. Queen

Its looks very juicy!…I definitely believe Brooke was ‘using’ Kanye for whatever amount of fame she is trying to get! But I guess, I’ll watch the show and see for myself.

  26. Damn it was some fine black men on her!!

Too bad I cut off my cable. lol. Its a recession! :)

  27. Zoe

Yea it looks pretty good. i like when the little girl said: “the point is Obama won.” I was like awww. lol but anyway the fact that it looks like a positive black show makes me a little disappointed that it is scripted. They should make a Brooklyn Heights next since I live in Brooklyn Heights. lol

  28. brezzy bre (why im so late)

hope its better than that other show SOMEBODIES

  29. Wayne

This looks like “Friends” with black people….im gonna watch it

  30. just me

The show is going to be WEAK just like BALWDWIN HILLS, which aint nothing but a poor version of laguna beach, and now we have a low budget version of The City!!! Its all stupid ghetto trash!!!!!!! I miss old BET WHEN A.J AND FREE HOSTED 106 ,AND RAP CITY WITH TIGGER, AND HITS!!!! THAT’S THE BET I USE TO WATCH, BLACK MUSIC TELIVISON NOW ITS BOOTLEG MUSIC TELIVISON, SICK!!!!!

  31. Wait so is it scripted or non-scripted?? You say it’s scripted but doesn’t seem like it. I’m confused.

And I love what BET is doing. People are always complaining about BET, even though other stations are waaaaaay worse, but these seem to be some ambitious, successful Black people. I love it!

  32. mack

her and kanye broke up over a internet battle?! are you serious?!!
the show looks ok but aren’t almost all of these so-called reality shows scripted?

  33. i’m aware what I said was an Oxy Moron. LOL! But most reality shows are scripted, right down to outfit selections and this one looks no different to me.

some scenes are probably real. like dudes reaction to obama winning. but the dating drama and stuff, makes me go hmmmm

  34. Junk

Yea, it’s looks scripted. But in their defense, at this point, pretty much all reality shows are bordering on being surreal. I mean, The Hills, c’mon? Am I supposed to believe that those girls really work for a prestigious fashion magazine, when I’m not fully convinced that they even know how to read very well? They’ve never been to college and don’t hold any degrees, yet, somehow they manage to beat out the thousands of intern applicants who do? Puhleeze. Even the people who work at the mag say that the girls’ positions are fake and that they rarely see them in the office unless a scene is being shot. I wish they’d just call it what it is: Soap operas for the late-teen to mid-twenties set; real people in faker than fake situations.

  35. Destanie

Yeah,BET keeps on giving us these shows that are MTV clones, hours and hours of watching these MTV clones, until we are all going to be clones and robots who think alike,No thank you! Almighty God made me to be a individual.

  36. NAKEISHA

I Agree with some of these posts that say that BET is following behind MTV too much,BET needs to be a trendsetter and take the lead by creating fresh new original shows instead of always being guided and following MTV`s lead. Something is wrong! It seems like those white people at CBS who bought BET,have cleverly turned BET into a poor inferior copy of MTV.Like a bootleg MTV or something!

  37. just me

Actually# 36(junk), lauren was in school so was whitney, and lo! The only girls who were not was Hidei and Adurina both had jobs that didn’t require a degree Adurina was a receptionist and just got promoted and Hedei works for some promoters but I agree she probably wouldn’t have gotten the job if it weren’t for the show but it still didn’t require one, most of them were in school they even show when whitney graduated !!!

  38. M+mikey

Since I live in Harlem I will def be watching this … I can agree that some things are scripted but I guarantee the majority is real..

  39. dont type to me

    boooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

a hot unsavorily blessed mess is what it is and who the hell is that girl they said kanye use to date? that must of lasted a day cause i dont remember her..bougie ass ppl like this irritate my soul not saying they have to be all hooded out and ish

  40. M+mikey

And the girls from “the hills” did go to school Whitney went to USC they showed her graduation on the show

Lo went to UCLA, she was in one of my classes in 2006 and I used to see her in my neighborhood everyday almost and lauren went to the fidm in dtwn … Most of the scenes were fake.. Not all, but these were actually their lives

  41. Jasmina

Just adding my two cents…i wouldn’t say that it’s completely scripted, the producers may have set out episode scenarios, but overall let everything play out as it happened.

My friends developed, produced and shot this show then got it picked up by BET, so I’m going to be supporting by watching. I remember when they first set up casting calls for young harlemites a couple years ago, now look… They’ve worked hard and definitely have my support!!

  42. juju

WHY ARE YALL ALWAYS SAYING BET IS TRYING TO BE LIKE MTV UGH VIA COM RAGEDY ASS OWN THE BOTH OF THEM SO IM SURE THEY ARE GONNA BE SIMILAR!

  43. Ashley in CALI

I’ll be watching.. It looks great to me. BUT.. can we please stop calling all of these shows ‘black versions ‘ of.. blah blah. because honestly The City is a spin off and another version of ‘The hills’, ‘Gossip Girls’ is another version of THE OC.. my point is one show begots another show, if the formula works..shucks.. they’re going to keep recycling it.. the only color that matters in entertainment business, (and any business) is GREEN. soo stop with his ‘black version’ of ‘White’ shows.. it’s only puttin one another down and we don’t need that

HARLEM stand up, all of them look FLY and most importantly INTELLIGENT!!

    Love from L.A. :)

  44. li

Oh shit I’m watching and I haven’t watched BET in about 6 months!!!

  45. li

Dont Type Me, you dont remember that girl, I forget her name so I must not remember her either, but I remember all that drama surrounding her and Kanye’s break up and then she was in some magazine with an article about it, some stupid shit she did on myspace over him?? I cant remember it all cause it was irrelevant….

  46. Mr. Kane

It doesn’t look bad at all. NO ONE has seen AN episode so I don’t know HOW ANYONE can say it’s scripted.

Even if its was, people would still watch. Damn hypocrites.

And if it’s wack and lame to you, why waste time talking about it? YOU ARE GIVING THE SHOW MORE ATTENTION DUMMY!!

    So thanks!

  47. Junk

    I stand corrected, 39 and 42.

  48. Junk

@Mr. Kane: I don’t think anyone’s saying that the show’s bad or will be bad, we just think it looks scripted. Which is not too far-fetched a notion considering that most reality shows nowadays are. I won’t watch it because I dont’ support BET, however, the show looks fine, IMO. And like all shows, it’ll find it’s core audience.

I think that the reason people are talking about it, is because it’s a blog and that’s what you’re supposed to do, offer your opinions on a post. Even if you don’t like the subject of the post, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to offer an opinion about it.

  49. Don't Be Churlish....[Happy Valntines Day]

A LOT “reality” television shows are scripted. More than we think.

  50. theComplex

Definitely scripted but it beats watching reality tv that full of people that look nothing like me or the friends I keep, ie: The City/Laguna Beach. This show looks interesting! And as a New Yorker, Im excited!

  51. MsBossofNYU

Did she just say “poets, revolutionaries, etc. once walked these streets, but now/today they belong to us” …that was a joke right????? Then what the heck does that say about you and what you are doing for your people …..and you’re in Harlem for God’s Sake. Damn Shame.

  52. me and you

Well,I will defenitely be watching this for sure! It seems very interesting. Plus, i love reality shows so bite me!! lol.

  53. MsBossofNYU

Marcus Diaz, I LOVE your idea.

  54. Lamar James

You will love it. A fresh new look on Black perception and BET. Ya’ll have way too many negative views on Black Television. Im going to need you to have a little more faith in our people.

  55. NO NAME!

this looks good and i don’t care that it’s a rip off of other MTV shows or that’s it’s not really a “reality” show or whatever.

i like to see people that look like me on TV doing something positive or at least showing different aspects of our experience and this show looks like it’s going to deliver just that.

y’all should give it a chance before completely writing it off.

  56. Lamar James

Make sure you check me out. I will be in about 5-6 Episodes. And this is real life. No script. Just a group of friends and how we live.

  57. shutup

    booooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiingggggggg

  58. Quickblood

I don’t buy its real life. American Networks really have lost faith in watching drama unfold by just being there with a Camera. All these shows look so incredibly scripted I can’t even begin to watch. Still it’s nice see some normal Black people on TV though cause I am getting sick of the crazy ones sucking up all the air time.
