MUSIC NEWS BIT: KELLY ROWLAND NO LONGER SOLO ARTIST UNDER COLUMBIA

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 |

Grammy-winning R&B/pop singer Kelly Rowland will no longer be recording with Columbia Records as a solo artist, it was officially announced Tuesday by the label.

Rowland, a founding member of Destiny’s Child, the world’s top-selling female group, will continue her relationship with Columbia Records in her ongoing role in the iconic ensemble.

Because Columbia Records has been my home base as an artist for more than a decade, the decision to move out on my own required a lot of soul-searching. As a solo artist, I felt the need to explore new directions, new challenges, and new freedoms outside my comfort zone and my friends and family at Columbia have been incredibly understanding about my evolution. I want to thank everyone at Columbia for the love and support they’ve shown and I will never forget how many good times we’ve had over the years.

NEWS ROUNDUP: MASSACHUSETTS FAMILY TRAGEDY / ANOTHER OPRAH SCHOOL SCANDAL / COP DELAYED NFL PLAYER AS RELATIVE DIED

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 |

Twenty-three year old Kerby Revelus fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, Samantha, decapitated his 5-year-old sister, Bianca, in front of a police officer and then turned toward his 9-year-old sister, Sarafina, with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as “a killing field” in Milton, Massachusetts.

According to reports, there was nothing to indicate Kerby “was capable of something like this or that this tragedy could have been prevented”.

He had been in trouble before, but his criminal record does not show anything close to the level of brutal violence he unleashed on his sisters on Saturday.

In September 2004, he was charged with assault and battery after his then 17 year-old sister, Jessica, called police after he punched her over a phone bill at 19. She declined medical attention and told police she did not want to get a restraining order against her brother. He was arrested for assault and battery in August 2004 after he was involved in a fight with several other teenagers. Then in December 2005, he was charged with carrying a firearm without a license after he tried to buy alcohol at a liquor store.

POLITICS: AUTO TASK FORCE REPORT / NEW STRATEGY FOR AFGHANISTAN & PAKISTAN / CEREMONY FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 |

On Monday, President Barack Obama announced that his Auto Task Force had completed its evaluation of the viability of General Motors and Chrysler in light of their requests for federal assistance. He also released a new policy with the American government guaranteeing warrantees for cars from those companies to ensure that if you have one it “will be safer than it’s ever been”.

The President pledged that he would not simply stand by and watch the American auto industry fail. He also pledged to work with Congress on further action, and he made clear that the government has no interest in running these companies. He added that his decisions were not made out of despair, but out of certainty that the ingenuity and determination Americans and these companies have shown for decades.
