AWARENESS: JURNEE SMOLLETT NAMED YOUTH AMBASSADOR TO AFRICA / MOREHOUSE SUMMER PROGRAM / MARIO HELPS KIDS POWER UP THEIR READING
Thursday, March 12, 2009

Actress and activist Jurnee Smollett just returned to the States from Swaziland, South Africa and Botswana where she emphasized the benefits of self-empowerment and civic involvement. In honor of Women’s Health Month, Jurnee also educated young girls about sex, body image and HIV/AIDS. Her visit was hosted by the U.S. Embassy in line with its ongoing foreign exchange programs.
Jurnee is the youngest board member of Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA), a non-profit organization working in the U.S. and South Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, advance human rights and equality, safeguard voting rights and assist, educate and empower children orphaned by AIDS as well as other at-risk youth.
MOREHOUSE SUMMER PROGRAM
Morehouse College’s Project Identity Summer Institute is a four week, on-campus program for rising male high school sophomores and juniors that replicates the college experience with a curriculum and activities to assist in developing their academic, social and leadership skills.
The curriculum consists of algebra II and pre-calculus, argumentation and debate, creative writing, leadership development and SAT preparation. Participants are taught by college faculty and paired with student tutors and mentors. Enrichment activities include roundtable discussions on various subjects relating to college life and daily life experiences.
Applicants should have an A or B average with some accelerated level coursework; have taken the PSAT or SAT; and present two letters of recommendation. The program fee is $1,400. For more info, visit morehouse.edu/projectidentity.

Its good to see people making a positive influence on other peoples lives. I feel like we get so caught up in trivial stuff sometimes, and then forget what is really important. Give back people!! It’s important!

# 6 DukesMan2000…I have noticed more and more black folks stepping up to the plate and more going above and beyond the call of duty also.
I’m in college now, and I don’t have that much longer to go before graduation but I’m kinda wishing I had gone to a HBCU. Maybe I’ll get my graduate degree from one, we’ll see. Morehouse’s summer program is gives young men something constructive to do during the summer break and helps them advance, and realize their potential. I see only great things comming from this prgram and many others to follow.

Naomi Campbell is THE woman! Too fierce too handle!
I knew there was a reason why I liked Jurnee Smollet. But come to think of it…why don’t they ever name ambassador to east europe countries where aids poverty and drugs strike too? Just wondering why some regions in africa are always under the spotlight as if it was the only place on earth with aids and poverty. Well more to the topic, the morehouse programm “sounds” good…
Hey Mario!

christina milian is just messy. she’s all up on The Dream, how weird that The Dream is producing a few songs for mariah and Niick is producing his videos.
Note:
Christina, Mariah is marriaged to nick, that union is protected by god. You will never have mariah’s hair texture or her voice.
Your sad Christina milian.

Jurnee “Boule” Smollett is at it again, lol. These type of things are so phony and contrived. For black American people, any black American person at all, to go to Africa to “help”, “teach”, or “assist” the Africans would mean that black people are at the point where they can help someone. That is not the case at all, because black people in America are the most confused people on the planet earth. The only thing that black Americans can do, in any capacity on a worldwide scale, is be representatives for the white man. If the South Africans wanted or were able to solve their problems, they would remove the caucasians from their land, and while they’re at it they’ll kick black representatives of the white man out as well. Watch how quickly things would get better for them if they did. What is she going to do, teach the young South African women how to wear tight jeans, show half their behind, and get tattoes like the black American woman? She’s going to teach a people that have lineal knowledge of their customs about sex, lol? When the black American woman has the highest rate of AIDS? Yeah, ok.

Judah your statement has no basis. If Jurnee or any African-American, or better yet any individual can assist, teach or better the life of someone else they should. Why do you believe African-Americans are monolithic? Jurnee does not respresent all African-Americans and therefore her efforts do not imply that African-Americans have reached the finish line so to speak. We never will and we should not strive to be better off. We should strive daily to be better than the previous generation and help others on this never ending journey of success.I am only sorry for you because you spew the ignorance that is Prejudice. To be better doesn’t mean to do without another race it means helping yourself as you help others. After all if only one race is getting ahead then we might as well be living in slavery times.

Furthermore, Jurnee has spoken to over 5,000 inner city youth at middle and high schools about sex and HIV/AIDS with her project, Positively Speaking through the Los Angeles Unified School Distric in the past year not to mention her work for the Obama Campaign, her work with pipeline to Prison and work with the Children’s Defense Fund and the Black AIDS Institute. So know your stuff before you turn something positive into a negative. We could take a cue from her cuz she’s only 22.

Hi Judah,
I see you are on your high horse today. I wonder what you do in your life, you must be making a hell of difference for us black americans for you to spout out the dribble that you do. I can appreciate that you have a difference of opinion and you can effectively voice your opinion, but for someone who is supposed to be so pro black why do you call her a name.
I happen to have met her, and the young sister is one of the most genuine, passionate and humble young lady I have ever met.
I would love to see her play Angela Davis.
Great post, thats my two cents keep the change
