MAG COVERS: THE FIRST LADY JOINS OPRAH ON THE COVER OF O MAGAZINE

The new issue of Oprah Winfrey’s magazine was released this week. First Lady Michelle Obama joins the media mogul on the cover of O and yep, this is the first time Oprah shared the cover with someone.

Mrs. Obama gave Oprah a tour of the new White House digs and spoke about how she feels privileged to be calling it home. She also spoke on the rules she laid down for daughters Sasha and Malia: (“I want the kids to be treated like children, not little princesses”). Here’s a couple snippets:

Oprah: So after the inauguration, what was your first weekend in the White House like?

Michelle Obama: Well, we still had family here, so it was almost like a wedding. A huge, very complicated wedding. The last visitors didn’t leave until Sunday. And then the first Monday was kind of weird. You know: Now we live here, and Barack is getting up and going to work, and it’s just us. This is our home now.

Oprah: I had heart palpitations coming through the White House gate, recognizing that this really is now your home. It’s the White House, and it’s your home.

Michelle Obama: And it’s a beautiful home. When you go out and come back, especially at night, with all the white lights on—it’s just beautiful. We feel privileged, and we feel a responsibility to make it feel like the people’s house. We have the good fortune of being able to sleep here, but this house belongs to America .

    #1:

Sweetie there are plenty of Black positive female role models out there. Maybe you need to open up your eyes. What about the women in your family, community, or the ones who work at the top executive positions at multi-billion dollar companies, etc… What about those women???

  22. Oy-Vey

    I’m LOVIN this right here!

The first lady of these United States and one of the most powerful women in the world! And their Black! Stuff like this makes you proud to be Black :)

  23. Sister S

Oprah we love you but why couldn’t you just let the 1st Lady be and give her the cover? WHY ARE YOU ON THERE? If Vogue can let her have the cover, why not you??? Re-print special edition covers please!!!!!!

  24. Inspired By Change

I really appreciate the First Lady’s sense of style. Its very fashionable, and not stiff like the other first ladies we’ve seen in the past. I can tell that she cares how she looks but doesn’t let it overwhelm her.

I can also appreciate her recent travels aroud the White House bringing attention to so many overlooked causes. We are only a couple of months in to the Obama’s tenure at the White House I only pray that things gets better from here.

  25. I agree with #1. They both look amazing! I love Michelle Obama’s belt

  26. Rayne

WOW Oprah is sharing a cover??? I always thought it was kinda weird that she was always on the cover. I mean I know she owns the mag but dang O! LOL….I’ve never purchased an issue of her mag but I’ll pick up this one while I’m getting groceries tomorrow.

  30. Intrigue216

I wonder if they worked their beef out because I heard the First Lady was giving Oprah the cold shoulder during an interview and only was talking to Gail…

  31. Q*U*E*E*`N

i’m excited for this…. gotta get it!!!

  32. LiveNLearn

“As far as I am concerned, these are the ONLY famous, positive, black female role models today.”

What about Jada or Alicia Keys? Queen Latifah? Angela Bassett? Alek Wek? Iman? Venus and Serena? There are tons of famous positive black female role models. It all depends on what we choose to focus on.

  33. Bohwe

Finally a black woman that isn’t representing us as women in a negative light. She isn’t an entertainer, athlete. Mrs.Obama is our first lady to the nation, married to the most powerful man in the world. Her education surpasses Oprah. She married Pres. Obama.

Please donot put the First Lady of the United States of America in the same category as a journalist-t.v. host. That is an insult.

  34. Lisa

@33 Oprah is a trailblazer in her own right, she’s been supporting education (numerous Morehouse endowments, South African School, etc.) and helping people all over the globe, supporting Hurricane Katrina and other national disaster victims, helping pass legislation, built a billion dollar company way before we ever heard about Michelle Obama. I certaintly think Oprah is in a category of her own. I for one, appreciate Michelle’s grace and intelligence, but just because Oprah didn’t go to Ivy league schools doesn’t mean she is less of a force. She is the woman after all that reportedly delivered Michelle’s husband over a million votes. How about we just be proud of both of these very graceful, intelligent, black women.

  35. Sha Sha

I love Michelle O’s outfit. Now what other first lady would you see rocking a plastic belt…Get it! I love her….I really do!!!!!

  36. Lisa

@33 Oprah is a trailblazer in her own right. Before we heard about Michelle or Barack Obama, for that matter, Oprah’s been funding education (numerous Morehouse endowments, South African School, etc), helping pass legislation against child abuse, assisting victims of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, helping hundrends perhaps thousands of people in need through her Angel Network, built a billion dollar company, rised up from poverty, shed light on the accomplishments of Black women with her Legends’ Ball, and has always been a superb role model, etc, etc. I for one appreciate Michelle Obama’s intelligence and grace but just because Oprah didn’t go to Ivy league schools doesn’t make her less triumphant or worthy of respect. Both women should and can be appreciated and respected. Not to mention, Oprah reportedly delivered over a million votes for Michelle’s husband, I think she can hold her own with the First Lady.

  37. noimagination

number 33.. i like michelle.. think shes such a breathe of fresh air for the american people but please do not insult the big O. That woman has overcome so much to become one of the most powerful and influential PEOPLE of her generation… and all on her own… while Mrs Obama is MRS Obama. They are both great women.. Oprah does not need to have her light stumped on so that Michelle’s can shine.. the world is big enough for a lot of shining stars!!

  38. T

Wow! My fist thought was…Umm…Oprah has NEVER had anyone else on the cover of the mag with her…heck…this is her mag and she can do what the heck she wants!

    I love it!!

  39. Lisa

@ 34 and 36/ For some reason my comment didn’t show that is posted the first time so I added more and that’s why the posts are almost identical in those two slots.

  40. hilltop

I LOVE IT!!! First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah are beautiful!!!

  41. Elle'

Yay First Lady Obama and Oprah. Black women stand up theses two represent what we all can be!

  42. coco

its about time oprah put someone else other than herself on dat magazine!!!!!… love u first lady michelle

  43. Soul_4_Reel

It is quite disturbing when a young black woman can say that these are the oonly two black role models in the world. There are so many other women out there whom, becuase they are not in the spotlight don’t get the recognition they deserve. What ever happened to the old lady who sits in the front seat at church every Sunday or the woman who womb you inhabited for 9 months? Do you not think that she is a role model to someone also? In a society where you are not worth something if you are not famous, we as women need to create for ourselves the roles that we want to model or have others model from us. I think as women we need to focus more on the postive things that we can do to enlighten ourselves than to be looking solely to people with a “CELEBRITY” status to determine what morals, values and standards we should set for ourselves.

HAVING SAID THAT MICHELLE OBAMA HAS AN AMAZING SENSE OF STYLE (or her stylist)!!!

  47. Mr. FAMU

    @ commenter number 1

Have you not heard of Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Bell Hooks.
There are tons of amazing, positive black women.

I get what your saying but we a lil better than what you portraying.

  48. pentelandsword

Beautiful cover! It is beautiful to see successful black women!

  49. Getting this! Loving what they have on! <3

  50. Sam

They are excellent women who are Celebrities representing african american women in a very positive light.
And to #1: If you wanna see more positive black women look at role models like Judge Hatchett, Judge Mablean, A. Keys, Queen Latifa, the women in A.keys’ superwoman music video. Im not gonna say look at ya momma cause not everyone has a mother who is setting a positive example so you have to be the judge on that one.

  51. risingSTAR

its oprah magazine and she has said on her show its her mag she gonna be on the cover..why she need someone else..oprah is a brand lol

secondly..this is a great honor for michelle cuz oprah did at least decide to share..u knew that old biddy was still gonna have her mug up on the front somehow lol..but who are we?

they both look gorgeous.. i always heard stories bout jackie kennedy and her garments..wasnt around then..but michelle is killin these ho’s wit her fashion..every time i see her out somewher im always lookin at her outfits im like she better work

  52. Highly opinionated and rightfully so!

Gosh…they are both absolutely beautiful INSIDE AND OUT!!! Their dresses and the colors of the dresses are absolutely stunning!!!

  53. FallBackHaters

You know I just love how classy and sophiscated Michelle is. She’s a definate inspiration

  54. UrbanChic

    @Sade,

You know what I love Michelle, but I co-sign 100% on what you are saying. We are so starved for role models until we miss the obvious one.

  55. ballrmom

It’s good to be a Black female, look who’s representing us, go away new york and all the rest of you skanks,it’s a new day!

  56. Whadidujusay?

The ladies look beautiful…but looks like they didn’t even pose for the cover picture! It looks like somebody photoshopped two random shots together. Whaz that about???

  57. Amazing!

Michelle is the best! Obama is a lucky man to have found such a lovely and classy lady. I love the way she dresses and shame on the people for talking bad about her.
They envy her. Most women don’t look half as good as she does at her age or younger!
She is an awesome mother, wife, first lady, and role model.

  58. Kitten

This is major! I love Oprah but MIchelle is it! I love how classy and intelligent she is. She reminds me so much of my mother and her sisters (my auntie’s). A strong black woman! Beautiful!!! Simply beautiful!

  59. Bohwe

Mrs. Obama isn’t my role model, my mother was and is my role model. RIP. And, no my mother didn’t go to an ivy league college. She didn’t fulfill her dreams of completing college, having a life to raise me and my siblings. Her grace, sophistication, elegance surpassed Mrs. Obama and Lady O.

Although, Mrs. Obama is sophisticated. I was pointing to the fact that Mrs. Obama isn’t apart of the entertainment industry, and in the scheme of things, in Mrs. Obama’s world, that surpasses Mrs. Winfrey, believe that.

And for the record, I like Mrs. Obama but I love Pres. Obama.

  60. LINDA

Our first lady nothing but grace. She is very beautiful. She is a role model for us not the only one but she is a very intelligent and beautiful african american role model. She will be certainly one of the reason i will buy my first O magazine. We can choose who we want to be our role models whether its our mothers, aunts, cousins, or rockstar whomever, just so long as we keep it positive.
