MAG COVERS: THE FIRST LADY JOINS OPRAH ON THE COVER OF O MAGAZINE

The new issue of Oprah Winfrey’s magazine was released this week. First Lady Michelle Obama joins the media mogul on the cover of O and yep, this is the first time Oprah shared the cover with someone.

Mrs. Obama gave Oprah a tour of the new White House digs and spoke about how she feels privileged to be calling it home. She also spoke on the rules she laid down for daughters Sasha and Malia: (“I want the kids to be treated like children, not little princesses”). Here’s a couple snippets:

Oprah: So after the inauguration, what was your first weekend in the White House like?

Michelle Obama: Well, we still had family here, so it was almost like a wedding. A huge, very complicated wedding. The last visitors didn’t leave until Sunday. And then the first Monday was kind of weird. You know: Now we live here, and Barack is getting up and going to work, and it’s just us. This is our home now.

Oprah: I had heart palpitations coming through the White House gate, recognizing that this really is now your home. It’s the White House, and it’s your home.

Michelle Obama: And it’s a beautiful home. When you go out and come back, especially at night, with all the white lights on—it’s just beautiful. We feel privileged, and we feel a responsibility to make it feel like the people’s house. We have the good fortune of being able to sleep here, but this house belongs to America .

Nice cover, but the “only famous female role models” is a bit much. We have several black female role models in this country.

Famous is such a broad word; however it’s so many I can’t begin to count them. We need to stop overboard with these two.

My Mother is famous to me and “the top role model” and Oprah, isn’t a role model to some black America believe it or not.

I heard one of older aunties say “Oprah, has insisted that she is religious, but continue to live in sin with Stedman without being married. Yes, she is rich, and she does good shows; but she is like do as I say, not as I do. She never promotes waiting until you find the right person to marry and have sex. However, it’s really up to the parents to ‘be’ role models to their own children. Also, it’s my personal opinion, that Oprah and Stedman “is married” and just on the low.

While I don’t agree with the sentiments of #1, it’s not hard to see why some might think that way. Of course there’s others out there, but even so a lot of the hard working, intelligent, academic black women are being overshadowed by everyday stupidity of certain young black women. I mean go on Youtube and you can’t even finish counting the number of sisters shaking their asses for the camera. Or go on Myspace, where a large number of sisters booty tootin in pictures while they take them with their camera phones facing the mirror.

  10. Secret Life of Me....

Great cover for Women’s history Month! Oprah seems to be in awe of Michelle Obama.

mMICHELLE OBAMA LOOKED NICE ON THE COVER OF O MAGINZNE THEY DIDNT REALLY NEED TO PUT OPHA ON IT SHE IS ALLWAYS ON THE COVER .

Oprah looks like a modern day house mammy in that dress, she should have worn
something different and then have the nerve to choose something with a belt around
it, come on. Michele looks like the classic mother first lady what have you. but
again OKRA should have stepped it up a notch, just check out all of her previous magazine “O” covers, she’s photo shopped and georgeous. Don’t wait until you’re photographed with the first lady (african american at that) to go natural, it ain’t pretty.

  14. HALCYONC

Finally a black woman that isn’t representing us as women in a negative light. She isn’t an entertainer, athlete. Mrs.Obama is our first lady to the nation, married to the most powerful man in the world. Her education surpasses Oprah. She married Pres. Obama. “
    ***********************************************************

This is a bold face lie. There are plenty of black women who are doing positive things. If you look hard enough you may find them in your family/community. I know I have.

  15. HALCYONC

“Please donot put the First Lady of the United States of America in the same category as a journalist-t.v. host. That is an insult.”
    **********************************************************

Insult how? Oprah has done and continues to do positive things in the black community. The First Lady I’m sure would disagree with you. Oprah was doing her thing way before you even knew The First Lady existed. Give credit where it’s due.

  16. all i can say is “wow”….
