POLITICS: PRESIDENT SPEAKS ON EARMARK REFORM / INTERNATIONAL WOMEN OF COURAGE AWARD / PRESIDENT SIGNS STEM CELL RESEARCH ORDER

Thursday, March 12, 2009

President Barack Obama speaks about new guidelines aimed at reducing earmarks in appropriations legislation on Wednesday.

The president said that, in the future, all earmarks should have a “legitimate and worthy public purpose”. He added members of Congress who propose them should post them on their Web sites for public inspection and that the measures should be discussed at public hearings. Read his full remarks.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN OF COURAGE AWARD

First Lady Michelle Obama speaks at the awards ceremony to announce this year’s recipients of the Secretary of State’s Award for International Women of Courage on Wednesday as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton looks on.

The awards were given to eight women from around the world who have shown leadership while struggling for social justice and human rights.

PRESIDENT SIGNS STEM CELL RESEARCH ORDER

On Monday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order on stem cell research which removed curbs on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

According to Pres. Obama:

With the Executive Order I am about to sign, we will bring the change that so many scientists and researchers; doctors and innovators; patients and loved ones have hoped for, and fought for, these past eight years: we will lift the ban on federal funding for promising embryonic stem cell research. We will vigorously support scientists who pursue this research. And we will aim for America to lead the world in the discoveries it one day may yield.

The President added that “the full promise of stem cell research remains unknown, and it should not be overstated. But scientists believe these tiny cells may have the potential to help us understand, and possibly cure, some of our most devastating diseases and conditions.”

Earmarks are how selected officials make money. Why in God’s name do you think a politician would spend million of dollars on a campaign to win a senate seat or governorship that’ll only pay him/her 160,000 per year? The power and the perks. Do you think if a senator or governor puts in a bill for 20 million dollars to build a museum, or rec center or fix a road in his/her state, the full amount gets utilized? He/she has his/her own contractors who he/she’ll use. The contractors have to pay the politician to get the contract and the politician gets crazy kick backs from the project. In turn, the politician may walk away with 5 to 8 million from the deal. That is politics and Obama should expose these unscrupulous bastards.

I’m impressed about the remarks to the earmarks and I would definitely like to see the information posted on websites. Nice touch Mr. President :)

So far First Lady Michelle is doing a great job at being out and about (different from when Hilary Clinton was 1st lady & from Barbara Bush, she is the medium). And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; from First Lady to Secretary of State! Wonder who the eight women are and what obstacles they overcame.

Not sure about this Stem Cell Research; what price are we willing to pay.

President Obama is making moves.
He overturned Dubya with that lift of the stem cell ban. In my opinion, anything that’s going to help us find cures for the epidemics in the world is a good move. And as far as the earmarks…thats another thing he’s keeping his word on! He talked about putting a stop to them during the campaign!

I’m always happy to see First Lady Obama as well. I keep trying to tell people she’s dope! :)

I voted for Obama, and am proud to have him as our First African-American President; however, I don’t agree with everything he’s doing right now.

I’m not for all of this spending…I really am not, this is just too much! Earmarks, earmarks, he campaigned against earmarks! I understand we need to stimulate the economy but borrowing the money from other countries is not going to get us there.

It apprears that anything Nancy Pelosi wants him to do, he’s doing it. I question my vote for him sometimes….

And this stem cell research, I DEFINITELY DO NOT AGREE WITH KILLING EMBRYOS AT ALL!!!!! LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION!!!!

I totally disagree with him overturning the band for stem cell especially embryonic stem cell.

I’m not sure how I feel about this stem cell research thing. I have to do some more research, but from what I understood, the reason there was a ban put on it was because it was found that scientists and doctors were not doing proper research. Instead of trying to find cures they were trying to clone people.

Barack Obama is So Sexy. Never Before has a president made me go “damn” lol
at least not in a good way. I wish they would let the man do his job. When two or three years pass by then critique him.
Michelle Obama is Stunning as Usual. I love them as a couple the compliment each other.

I am so proud of President Obama. This man has hit the ground running from day one! I’m not saying I will like all his policies but I do believe he has a sincere interest in getting America out of the economic mess that we’re in. And you when America catches the cold the rest of the world gets pneumonia…so kudos to you President Obama.

Michelle Obama is doing an exceptional job as First Lady…and did I mention she is fly too! :D

On another note, not all earmarks are bad so I don’t believe they should be eliminated all together. After all earmarks do create projects that in turn create jobs.

Oh and President Obama never campaigner against earmarks…that was JOHN MCCAIN. Obama said he would lessen them but he NEVER said he would eliminate them. I do believe that some earmarks are good for the economy and local states.

To whoever asked for details on why the women were being honored. View the video here. Hillary Clinton gives the story on each woman before she is honored and you also get to hear her and Michelle’s speeches.

Not to be critical but CL is slow on the news. They are quick to cover a Beyonce photo shoot or a “Guess Who” eating ice cream a local ice cream shop, but the real news and events that affect people lives, y’all are moving at a snail’s pace. If nuclear bomb went off somewhere and we were depending CL to inform us, we’d all be dead.

Bernie Madoff got his day in court - No coverage
Michael Steele getting his ass kicked by his white masters - No coverage
Reports came out that bailed out banks had friends in high places (politicians) - no coverage

I am just saying…

All you people that believe that Obama is going to save this country are idiots. It’s good to see one of us up there for a change, but everything that he slammed McCain about he’s turning around and doing. He has lied from day one. He works for the Federal Reserve not us. Do your research and looked at everyone on his staff. The New World Order is in motion and it is too late to stop. He said first that thing that he would do was bring the troops home from Iraq and what did he do, he sent 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. Before they invaded Afghanistan, Afghanistan produced only 10 percent of the world’s heroin but now they produce 90 percent of it. Open your eyes he takes orders from the Big wigs of the world.
