POLITICS: ST. PATRICK’S DAY RECEPTION / FIRST LADY & YOUTHBUILD AMERICORP HOME / PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT ON THE BUDGET

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama join the Taoiseach of Ireland Brian Cowen and his wife, Mary Molloy, in the annual St. Patrick’s Day reception in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday.

FIRST LADY & YOUTHBUILD AMERICORP HOME

First Lady Michelle Obama greets members of YouthBuild AmeriCorps while touring an energy-efficient home construction project with the organization’s founder and President Dorothy Stoneman on the National Mall on Tuesday.

More than 100 YouthBuild students, graduates and members of Congress celebrated the organization’s 30th anniversary by starting the construction of an affordable, energy-efficient home on the Mall.

The First Lady even planted a seedling inside the rooftop gardening box while touring the construction project.

PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT ON THE BUDGET

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama met with Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad and House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt.

After the meeting, the President spoke about the investments and hard choices his budget makes. He noted at the outset that it “will bring discretionary spending for domestic programs as a share of the economy to its lowest level in nearly half a century” over the next decade. But he also made clear that while the budget does not attempt to solve every problem, it does not walk away from the crucial investments that will ensure our economy is on a strong footing for the future.

I love that Mrs. Obama is sticking by her roots! Very few know that she use to lead a Chicago AmeriCorps agency (Public Allies) back in the day. She took a big salary cut by doing this…she could have stayed at the corporate law firm! Point blank, Michelle is the REAL DEAL! She is truly my role model! Every time I see her, I smile within!

  14. Get A Grip

Its nice that Michelle is contributing, its fine and dandy. When it comes to President Obama’s mouth about the economy he just needs to more conscious. I’m so tired of watching the news hearing & reading about his negative view of the economy. He needs to let people know that there is indeed a green sign of vitality in the job market, stock market, etc. Yes, sure realistic about the current situation and also be positive. Its nice he’s making history but he should also make history as a president who practices what he preaches.

    WASHINGTON – Cue the outrage.

For months, the Obama administration and members of Congress have known that insurance giant AIG was getting ready to pay huge bonuses while living off government bailouts. It wasn’t until the money was flowing and news was trickling out to the public that official Washington rose up in anger and vowed to yank the money back.

Why the sudden furor, just weeks after Barack Obama’s team paid out $30 billion in additional aid to the company? So far, the administration has been unable to match its actions to Obama’s tough rhetoric on executive compensation. And Congress has been unable or unwilling to restric
t bonuses for bailout recipients, despite some lawmakers’ repeated efforts to do so.

The situation has the White House and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on the defensive. The administration was caught off guard Tuesday trying to explain why Geithner had waited until last Wednesday to call AIG chief executive Edward M. Liddy and demand that the bonus payments be restructured.
