VIDEO: STAMPEDE @ AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL AUDITION

March 16th, 2009

Check out this footage from this weekend after a crazy stampede took place at NY’s America’s Next Top Model auditions.

Hundreds of people lined up in front of Manhattan’s Park Central New York hotel when the commotion broke out. Reports say that it started after one contestant reportedly saw a smoking vehicle and said there was a bomb or fire in the car.

Two people were taken to the hospital while four others that were injured declined treatment. Two women and a man were arrested on disorderly conduct charges and the audition was shut down by authorities, AP reports. Host Tyra Banks released this statement:

We are concerned by the events that occurred Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of the New York City casting call for the next cycle of ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ At this time, we still don’t know all the details of what happened or what triggered the incident. We appreciate the efforts of the NYPD and will assist them in any way possible in this matter.”

Why were there so many people there for a casting call for a lame ass show that hasn’t turned out a “top model” at all!!! if you call doing “Essence Clothing Catalog” top modeling or wig catalogs, then excuse me!!! False hope for those so desperate during sad to say, desperate times.

only top model on the damn show is Tyra!!! and she isn’t even modeling anymore while she tries so hard to become the “second coming of Oprah”!!!! Her shows make me throw up a little in my mouth!!! What I wont take from her that she is a black woman making moves but her topics on her daytime show are corny and the model thing show is boring, but I don’t expect her to be the next Walter Cronkite or Katie Couric, but her hustle should be commended.

I don’t know why everyone is so excited when they get picked on the show. Your “career” still doesn’t go anywhere. No one will ever hear about you after the show cycle is over. And it’s true, the only top model who I ever really hear about is Eva, and semi- Jaslene but everyone — WHO? WHAT?

    LMAO

this is really awful. it’s a serious situation and i won’t stoop to making fun of it because this could have turned out much more tragic. i think many ppl are there just for the fun of trying out, others there to possibly just be on tv if they make it far enough and a minority of women who are really there to live out their dream. whether these models on the show win or don’t win, they always seem to get some kind of opportunity that was afforded by their antm appearence. plus, keep in mind. this is one of tyra’s first ever auditions for SHORT models, who had never been given a chance on the show before. i think a lot of girls were excited about that.

I was there… and it was CRAZY!!!! “Hundreds of people”… you mean THOUSANDS of people!!! It was about 4,000 people there and it was unorganized. That’s the top model staff’s fault. If you know you’re stopping in such a major city, security shopuld have been lined up. NO ONE EVEN KNEW WHAT ENTRANCE OF THE HOTEL WE WERE GOING THROUGH. There were like 4 entrances to the hotel. Totally unorganzied.

    Any whooo…. until next time??

OH… and for those who don’t understand why so many people came out, this was the first time Tyra was casting short girls. 5’7″ and under to be exact.

idk how true it is, but i also heard something about someone yelled out that someone had a gun. like i said, i don’t know if that’s true or not but i think yelling that would cause chaos anywhere. cuz i’d be the first one moving. i wouldn’t stand around waiting to get shot.

were any of u cl readers there?

I auditioned in LA last year and there was barely anyone there!

That really is a lot of people, maybe it was because it was for the short girls!

I bet you those people who got hurt are going to try and sue Top Model or Tyra!

I literally stumbled upon this site. When I first walked by @5pm there were a lot of girls standing online. The line wrapped around the block and then around the next block. Immediately I figured it had to be the Top Model audition because all of the females were like 5’5″ and most of them were Black or Latina and practically everyone was dressed to the nines like they were either going to church or to the club. I was rushing to my shoe repair 2 blocks away so I didn’t linger long but I noticed and thought it odd too see so few police officers relative to the crowd and also there were quite a few guys just standing by ogling the girls and saying rude ish. I felt awkward standing around simply because I’m 5’10″ and was one of the tallest chicks out there so these guys were certainly out of place. When I came back around 5:25 sh*t had hit the fan. There was a car smoking and someone shouted something about fire or a bomb and people started running and so many girls fell and were stepped on. I got there maybe 3 mins after it happened and girls were crying. Handbags and shoes were on the floor and get this… many girls in the melee were saying that they have been groped by these guys who were mostly to blame because they screamed gun or fire. Quite a few girls were also mugged in the midst of all this drama. I took photos with my phone and will post some later or send them to Concreteloop. Definitely NOT funny! And the sad part is that there had to be a thousand girls out there all seeking some level of validation from a reality show. Kudos to Tyra for making girls of color feel like they can be somebody but shame on our mags, our videos, our music and even some of our men for making these same girls feel so devalued!

I totally agree with “the hottness” (#17). I went to the D.C. casting last saturday. I’m from NYC but i decided to get a lil mini vacation in for the weekend. With the new requirements (girls 5′ 7″ and under) I had a feeling that the new york casting would be ridiculously packed. I was right! If u think about it, the average woman is 5′ 5″, and the average woman would also love to be a model. So of course the turn out would be pretty damn substantial. Honestly I think the producers should have enlisted a weight requirement for this casting, even though it goes against what the show preaches. From what I saw in D.C. of the girls chosen to go to the next round, they were definitely not looking for the in-between woman: not quite skinny and not quite plus size. And that is exactly the category where a lot of the women auditioning fall (including myself). But nonetheless, I enjoyed the D.C. weather and the sightseeing and stuff. Sidebar: I didn’t get to see my dude Obama :( and the club closed early cuz we forgot to take day-light savings into account :(

This is sad, ANTM is a joke. NONE of the “winners” get anywhere. The show is all about Tyra giving girls false hope. I’ve been in the fashion business for years, and ATNM is a joke to the fashion community. PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! If you want to be a model go straight to a legit modeling agency. The problem with this NY casting is that it was advertised on TV, there was no exclusivity. It was a come one come all approach which is beyond unprofessional…..

people really want to be on this show. i love the show actually. I’d hate to see how auditions will look when she cast for cycle 13, cycle 13 will only be fore those 5’7 inches and below. I trully can’t wait. cycle 13 will be the reality show of the decade!!

MANY OF THE GIRLS DO WORK OVERSEAS..SO MANY ARE MAKING MONEY…WE JUST DON’T SEE THEM BUT LIKE TYRA SAID..THE SHOW GIVES YOU AN OPPORTUNITY & OPENS DOORS FOR YOU..WHAT YOU DO AFTER THAT DEPENDS ON YOU & HOW SERIOUS YOUR HUSTLE IS.

PLUS THE DAY OF THE “SUPERMODEL” IS OVER..IT’S NOT LIKE IT WAS BACK IN THE DAY..NOBODY GIVES A SH** ABOUT MODELS..AND NOW YOU HAVE ACTRESSES AND SINGERS GRACING THE COVER OF FASHION MAGAZINES (EVEN VOGUE)…SO IT IS WHAT IT IS..

I was there and it was ridiculously crazy! I got there a little late around 11:30 and by that time of course it was PACKED and that is an understatement! I…however ended up getting an interview with the production staff a little while after I had arrived which was great(hopefully it was worth something considering all of the foolishness that went on), anyway…every short woman in the state and surrounding states was there! OMG!!! WTF! I mean there was a girl there that was about 4’7! Seriously! So everyone in the line was cutting and pushing and arguing and everything else you could possibly think of, so some guy was in line and got into an argument with some lady and was put out of the line by the police and he was PISSED! So he starts threatening people and said “Maybe if I start shooting people then this line won’t be so long!” WTF! And the bad part is the police were standing right there! I started getting worried at that point, and it wasn’t for nothing because immediately after that everything got CRAZY! First everyone was pushing every time the line started to move just a little bit which ended up causing that ridiculously tight-packed crowd. So then someone was driving down the street and ran into something(most likely they were trying to pay attention to the crowd and crashed), and the car started smoking really bad and someone yelled out “OMG! The car’s going to blow up!” (Why oh why did they do that?!), that’s when everyone started trying to run in that packed crowd and I was standing on top of a comforter that someone had dropped on the ground and some chick next to me immediately before the stampede started, screamed out ” OMG, WE’RE STANDING ON TOP OF SOMEONE!”…and I’m like no it’s just a blanket and then everyone started running and my foot got caught in the blanket and I started falling down and all I could think of was “Oh God, please help me get up! This is no way to go out!!”. So I grabbed on to someone’s arm to pull myself up and someone also helped me up, and some lady came in the crowd to get her daughter and I grabbed on to her and her daughter and got myself out of there. I just said this ain’t it and bounced but before I left I saw the man that got kicked out of the line run back in the line and start fighting with someone though. That ish was CRAZY!!!! Never again!

And the mistake that Tyra made was deciding to do a “short” season, there has NEVER been a commotion like this for castings, I bet she will never do it again! Or at least I hope not.
