AWARENESS: LAILA ALI SPEAKS ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

A new study by the government’s National Center for Education Statistics says almost 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese. According to the CDC, nearly 1 out of 3 children ages 2 to 19 is overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.

Boxing champ Laila Ali speaks about the importance of preventing childhood obesity along with Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle in the video above sponsored by the National Institute of Health’s We Can! Program.

Partnering with Subway restaurants, the program aims to reach families throughout the United States and beyond with practical tips and tools to help children and their parents maintain a healthy weight and prevent obesity. The program promotes three easy steps for preventing obesity: eat right, move more and limit screen time.

I’m glad someone touched on this subject, many kids today are very overweight. I was recently in South Carolina where we went to this restaurant called Golden Carrol (sp) and the kids plates were more filled than the adults and they would finish their plates and run right back to the buffet, even though their were healthy choices on the buffet, i would never let my boys eat that way.

Parents should stop feeding their children McDonalds and Subways.

Society is to be blamed for this. The children are suffering as a result of the women being missing from the household. Society has made it difficult to sustain a family on one income, hence, forcing the women to work. So now, how do you expect your children to get the proper nutrition if you are working 12 to 15 hours a day at a job somewhere? But women are not absolved of any blame, either, because y’all lobbied for this via the Women’s Liberation movement of the 1960’s, didn’t you?

Women’s Liberation is all good and dandy because the vision was to give women the choice to work or stay home. But the extreme radical feminism, we see in today’s society, eliminated that choice. It has taken the true inequalities of the past and used them to trap women in perpetual victimhood. They use the bullwhip of guilt and the sledgehammer of lawsuits to force society to adhere to unreasonable and unsustainable standards of “equality,” ultimately defeating the purpose the women’s liberation movement. Radical feminism has caused women to neglect their roles in the family structure. Now women wanting to be equal to and independent of her male counter, and now we have seen the matrifocla family structure is virtually extinct. In today’s society, we see our women are focused on career and advancement in the work force and the opportunity cost to chasing these pipe dreams are detrimental to our children’s development. And these kids are even further up sh!t’s creek because in addition to working 12 hour days, most jobs give these women laptops to they can “take work home.” Now you find yourselves working 24 hours a day. And like everything else, the woman usually over compensates, never finds that work/family balance so they leave it up to the TV, Day Care and other peripheral devices i.e Playstation to be mothers to these children. I don’t want to sound like a Neanderthal here, but one cannot deny the fact the American family structure is in a dismal state. Today’s woman wants to be leader, head of household, the man, so she never learnt or never cared to learn how to be a woman, a wife, a mother.

@ Dukesman it seems as if you are implying that the man is not supposed to, or cannot be a contributing member of the household duties. A man can cook, clean, and tend to the childrens’ needs as well. A successful work-life integration is possible with both parents working. It should not be deemed necessary for a woman’s role to be within the home, or the man’s role to be outside of the home. It should be at the discretion of the family. I do agree with the notion that a stay at home mother is somewhat looked down upon in our current society. This should not be the case either, people have a right to choose which role they want to fulfill. It is also fine to feed a child McDonald’s or Subway as long as it is done the right way. Both of these restaurants have healthy options to promote the necessities that a child needs. Fast Food is still okay, it should just be done in moderation.

@ Rell….

You have missed the point. My argument transcends the trivial notion of “Oh, the man can cook too…” I cook and I am a damn good one at that. My argument is about what characterizes a sound family structure and today’s society doesn’t allow for these characteristics to prosper. A man is supposed to contribute to the house hold in the form of the protector, the provider, the teacher and the leader. The woman is the nurturer, the supporter and the care giver. Now these roles are as paramount as the man’s because the man cannot carry out his tasks without the woman fulfilling hers.

@ Waxed….

I see you’re point; your definition of a real man is one who takes the role of the woman…..today’s women will only consider a man REAL, if he tucks his tail between his legs and let them trample on his manhood. I am not capable of being THAT “real”

It need to be talked about because generally speaking African American and Black families are more accepting of overweight and obese children and take less steps to create healthier lives for these kids.

I understand that it can be difficult to pick the healthiest choices because buying healthy food at your local grocer is def. more expensive than the unhealthy ones. Also single mothers and/or father might not have the time to create the meals. But there are SOO many resources on the internet and in books on quick healthy meals. That and my mother has 4 kids taking care of on her own and manages to get healthy food in us while attending college.

It’s not impossible if you acknowledge that it is an issue that needs to be tackled.

@Dukesman

Very well put, but don’t bother brother. The Americanized woman, particularly the black woman, is completely lost and destroyed. Their heads are so far up their own backsides that they have no possibility of understanding anything other than what this society propagates, which is the destruction of the female role. The white mainstream is the drug pusher and the black woman is the addict. She will continue to get high until she overdoses. That’s all these women are about, is their own destruction. When you stated your case, which is rather irrefutable, this person “Rell” was so eager to be contentious that she was forced to say that “fast food is ‘ok’ in moderation”, lol. This is what the condition of the battle is. Women who are willing to risk the health and livelihood of their children in order to be “independent” (corporate America whores) in subliminal hopes of destroying the male image and dominance. The woman actually thinks that she is “equal” to the man (whatever that means). Up next is the children’s revolution, in which children declare that they are “equal” to adults, lol. This is why this society is on the fast track to destruction. The real issue is when is the black man going to wake up.
