Lil Wayne covers the April 2009 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, on stands this week. The rapper speaks on venturing into the Rock genre for his newest album. Here is a snippet:
“The rock shit just comes from what my life is now,” Wayne, 26, says. “I’ve grown into this person.” He released his first album, 1999’s Tha Block Is Hot, when he was only 17, and built his name on being the busiest rapper in the game, dropping a relentless stream of mixtapes and cameos. But aside from plucking at electric guitars onstage and in videos, Weezy never let on that his rap career could take such a significant detour. Describing a wild night when he woke up in bed with three or four women he couldn’t name, Wayne reveals he had an epiphany. “I just got — I’m not going to say ’so good’ at what I was doing, but it became such a regularity for me that I got tired of it. Being from the south and having listened to Lil Wayne WAAAAAY before Cash Money & southern rap blew up…. You couldn’t pay me to believe he would grow into the artist/person he is today. I’m proud he was able to evolve as he did.

I respect anyone trying something different and purposely (or incidentally) opening some eyes in their fanbase to something “new.” On the other hand, I’m a true rock fan so to label him anything besides pop/punk is an insult. I think ppl really need to stop gassing this dude’s head up by making him think he’s the next Jimi Hendrix (just like ppl gassing The Dream being the next Prince. HA! That nig wishes!). I’ll admit I’m intrigued to see what he’s gonna come out with because “Prom Queen” had a good riff (plus I’m naturally an optimistic person) but I highly doubt he’ll do anything remotely rock. Pop/punk and SOME post-punk is NOT ROCK. Maybe to children who don’t know any better but to ppl who do, that ish is NOT ROCK and never will be. Of course ppl are gonna buy his album because ppl are on his nuts. But will he get rock cred from actual rock fans… doubt it.
