People try to be relevant for others when they have nothing else better to do with their lives. Now, I’m going to say it, and call me a hater. Number 1 at the box office simply means that the promotion sold the movie, not that the movie was good. I went to see the movie for myself, and I’m sorry, there was nothing complex about the movie, the storyline, nor the characters. I know Beyonce stans will declare that somehow this is a victory for Knowles, but quite the opposite. In my mind, the fact that she is continually given substandard roles speaks volumes about the amount of respect that the Hollywood community has for her as an actress. Angela Bassett tried to have that conversation years ago about the quality of the roles offered to black actresses, and people dismissed it as jealousy against Halle Berry. (When you talk smack about the only two black women with talent, Beyonce or Halle, you are a hater). After seeing the (excuse me), piss poor role and writing of this movie, we now need to have that conversation. The only highlight of this movie was the fight scene, and frankly that began to wear off. Elba is entirely too good of an actor to have gotten himself caught up with a poor quality script. If Beyonce accepts another role, I beg her, have someone with experience in acting to evaluate the script and help you to discern what is a quality role and what is some bull put together by white folk who just want to say that they have a black body on screen. White folk have sense enough to know that Beyonce’s name sells tickets, heck I went there to support the sister, I’m not going to lie. I can’t sit here and pretend like this abortion on the screen was a quality movie. Again, the establishment makes money, and black folk still have a limited amount of actresses due to the fact that non-actresses such as Beyonce refuses to have dignity and say “No, lets try some new talent.” If she wants to make money, heck, produce a movie or a script featuring newer black talent.
