♫ ALBUM REVIEW: ELECTRIK RED – HOW TO BE A LADY

They’re no Spice Girls or Pussycat Dolls, but the fearsome foursome known as Electrik Red is ready to stake their claim on the debut album, How to Be A Lady: Volume 1. And the girls aren’t leaving any stones unturned.

LISTEN UP:

Electrik Red was Shakir Stewart’s last baby over at Def Jam before his untimely death, but the girls have been together since Usher’s Confessions era, when Binkie Reevey, Sarah Rosete, Naomi Allen and Lesley Lewis met up as dancers on his 2004 tour. Binkie and Lesley asked Sarah if she wanted to be a part of their girl group. She agreed to join, and requested that they meet with her best friend, Naomi, who they “fell in love with.” Thus, Electrik Red was born.

Still in grind mode, the girls continued their careers as dancers to pay the bills and make the rent, appearing individually in videos for Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, and Chris Brown, just to name a few. The girls got their big break after being cast in The Dream’s “Shawty Is A 10!” video, where Shakir Stewart organized a meeting for the girls to meet with LA Reid. Reid signed Electrik Red with Def Jam and linked the girls up with dynamic duo, Tricky Stewart and The Dream to collaborate on their debut album, How to Be A Lady: Volume 1.

The girls say that the album title “plays on the stereotype of what a lady is supposed to be, how she is supposed to act and what she is supposed to say.” And it does just that. They tested the boundaries of what “classy” ladies are supposed to be on their debut single, “♫ Drink In My Cup” but really saw the feedback and success that they were looking for on the slinky, sexy synth ballad, “♫ So Good.”

Lady is a pretty straight forward effort. The Dream, Tricky Stewart and the girls have a clear chemistry. The production duo understands the girls’ vision, and they understand that you need a certain swag to really carry off these tracks, pulling inspiration from Vanity 6, Apollonia and Rick James’s Mary Jane Girls. Channeling everything that is mysterious, raw and risque, the girls ooze sex and femininity throughout the immaculately produced debut.

Highlights from the album including the single, “So Good,” as well as the album’s opener, “Muah,” where the girls coo with an uber confidence (“Shawty, I’m the shit with this shit… mmmm, muah!“), as well as the intoxicatingly sensual “Bed Rest.” The Dream lends the Toronto and New York natives his Atlanta swag on the outlandishly banjee “On Point” and “P Is For Power,” which is slated to be the next single.

Make sure you pick up your copy of Electrik Red’s album, How to Be A Lady: Volume 1, in stores and online today, May 26th!

  1. ISLAND GYAL

Love the album and the girls, they so cool, talented and they r all beautiful. u don’t see that in every group where all the girls are equally pretty and they don’t outshine each other, which makes them a great group. and they can sing. what the hell wrong with ppl ears, just because they ain’t hollaring like a cat that don’t mean they can not. Some ppl need to educate themselves about singing, in this world they are different types of voices, tones and range. and guess what haters they have the num1 album on 1 tunes. So say what u wanna!

lol at this crazy Rich Girl stan who be hitting ER up on twitter sending them bullshit hate tweets. I see u on the loop posting negative shit over and over again yes i know WHO u are STARNUFFSAID u crazy fool! I’m gonna pray for. and fyi i like Rich Girl but i love “Electrik Red”.

  7. WHEREISTALENT?

I like “So Good” but that’s about it!
    Where is the talent?
It’s a new group that’s called RichGirl who has talent, beauty and class.
I would have to pick them over these chicks…. sorry.

Richgirl video is called “He Ain’t With Me Now (Tho)”
Check em out if you get a chance.

  8. Lynn

#38 and #56 said it at best. Truth be told this is simply not going anywhere. Sorry but that is the truth. Yes they are different which is always refreshing , however in this case this is a mess a flop and that is not me hating, however that’s how we black people do, we give honest opinions that the majority normally never likes.

  9. Payshence

Pu-LEEEEEEEEEEEEz. they are gorgeous. but they suck. like be serious. if they were ugly everyone wud not even give them a chance. the lead singer sounds like kelis on crack and the rest?! ha! hell no. they havn’t showed that they can even sing. womp womp. next!

  10. MRS. SK8BOARD P (AK & BK STAN)

I like em..they eventually grew on me..but im not sure about the success of their album..like some have said b4 this might not go anywhere..but i wish them the best

  11. Geyonce[tha]Great

I like the album! Muah, Bed Rest, P is For and So Good are my ones!

  12. Geyonce[tha]Great

Oh and they most def sound like Kelis and Janet!

And The Dream is hot! I love all his work! It started with Nivea!

  13. Brit

THE ALBUM IS GREAT!!! This is a great review too

    ELECTRIK RED WORLD DOMINATION!!!!

  14. imnotthatstoopid

    Unh-no. Just…no!

  15. ELECTRIK RED - HOW TO BE LADY IN STORES NOW!!

    Richgirl sucks!
Electrik Red has great music, look better, and amazing personalities.
Richgirl isn’t bringing anything new to the game. They are just a Destiny’s Child reject group.

  16. ...

yeah, but ER is Kelis x4 + profanity and skankiness.. which will get them nowhere..

These hos can not sell this mess.

lol @ some of these trollops sayin they liked the album, but downloaded it last week. Where are your coins sweetie? ER standin on street corners with posters like they givin out the album free with purchase of a carwash. girl boo..

  17. kmniles

Ok…so from Brian’s review I should expect phenominal dancing with mediocre vocals?

    I’ll pass…

  18. ATX

The album is pretty good. Definitely a different sound other than what I am used to hearing, but they are doing their thing.

  19. stewart

I’m really not feelin’ them, but Naomi is sexy as hell!

  20. Christmas Jones

One of them is a man, or all of them. This is highly disturbing.
Number two; WTH is going on w/ the song, “ON POINT”??? Not all of the “women” (questionable) in this group are black, so why is the N word being thrown around so carelessly.

These are some homothugs in drag. Not impressive!

  21. Jasmine

Their album is not good. They cannot sing.

  22. Roderick

I LOVE THESE GIRLS ALOT..ALBUM DOPE……THEY AINT THE TRADITONAL GIRL GROUP THEY REPERSENT LADIES….SARAH SINGLE MOM STILL IN THIS BUSINESS….RICHGIRL IS A GOOD GROUP JUST NEED TO SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE FROM THEMI JUST FOUND OUT BOUT THE GROUP BOUT 3DAYS AGO..I CAN ACTUALLY SEE ELECTRIK RED BEING NEXT BIG THING….IN OUR TIME

  23. Flowerchild

The shit-hop beats overshadows there voice if they have a voice and one of the lead singer sound like kelis. Don’t compare them to Vanity 6 because Vanity alone makes it rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Alvin

Love Electrik Red they’re hot and love the new cd. Hot Hot Hot!!!

  25. Lil CiCi

who are these no talented rejects? you’ve got to be kidding me. and for those who are comparing then to Vanity 6 are INSANE!! these girls are hot garbage and their music shows. they are all focused on one topic and that’s ass. i mean c’mon now who would want to hear every track talkin about sex. i mean it’s okay to express sexuality but on every track. that shows me they are unbalanced and they don’t have any direction in thier music. and then throw us off with the album cover HOW TO BE A LADY. please how to be a lady my ass. this is what’s wrong with the music industry today. RICH GIRL is what’s up!!!

  26. cp3 loves Jen Jen...yes he does

i just bought it…i love it!

  27. Kellz

Did #25 tell me I should just support them? WTF for? I don’t support trash; I support quality. I am ashamed to have supported them at one point. I am SO sick and f-ing tired of chicks coming along and further pushing the male ideal of what I female should be while have the audacity to call themselves “divas” and “empowered ladies.” Bitch, please! Take a damn look and the mirror and be real. There album, their image and just what they depict themselves to stand for is what’s wrong with the damn society and why we are going NOWHERE fast.

  28. Teeyah23

Yeah I got the album it’s aight but I didnt pay for it bootleg you know but I wouldnt buy it unless your really feeling the group.

  29. Chrystel

The song on point… could of sworn it was just the dream the whole time? why? its their album. I could be wrong but, overall its a solid debut!

  30. Kellz

Oh and did anyone read #57′s comment? If not, you should because they are speaking the truth. And who was the idiot who said they are representing for the ladies? What f-ing ladies are you speaking of? You must mean the chicks who still live in the ghetto thinking they are fab by flashing their gucci and prada they paid for with bill money lol. I don’t know what you were raised to admire BUT I admire no b**ch who is holding back the advancement of my women counterparts. Either you are for helping others or you’re harming them… this is lethal ignorance at it’s best!

  31. LoveMuffin

1st off: Overkill w/the advertisements on here. LMAO they are haunting me during every click! :P
2nd: I understand they don’t want to be a stereotype of what a “lady” is supposed to be, but some of their stuff is just tacky. “On Point” was wack on so many levels. WTF was that? That n*gga do this, do that? Next. P is for Power..NEXT. Go Shawdy’s beat was pretty cool but again they’re a little too sexed up for me.

These are beautiful young ladies, and I’m sure they have talent but they need to come w/a different formula. Talking about sex in every track is not hot. I’d just listen to most rap songs if I wanted to hear that..

  32. LoveMuffin

& who the heck is RichGirl?

  33. crunkpoet

they might not have the best voices but their songs are the shit!!!

    get into them!!!

  34. brezzy bre

i heard one song from richgirl and it was 24s or something with bun b and that shit was garbage sophia fresh they better

  35. Black-n-Mild

    love love LOVE this album.
    go girls!

  36. vainsmith

I brought their album off of itunes – i plan on buying the actual album tomorrow. I really believe that anyone who pushes themselves can go far whether the mass believe it or not. Electrik Red is different – especially their sound and alot of people arent into it BUT there are people that are and people that can grow to like it – so really the album is for them. They are humble chicks tryna make it & if they dont make it to where some of the big names are I dont think they will be that mad – the industry to me isnt likely because of all the bs that goes along with it. Just listen to a few tracks off of it – if you dont like it continue to listen to whatever floats your boat.

  37. Mutada al sader the king

Well I’ve never posted on a blog site at 12:41 at night, but I just got the album. And its pretty dope. Once again LOS steals the show with the best tracks on the album, Tricky came with it, and Dream did his R-Kelly/Prince thing. And it sounds like Pensado and company mixed it, which is what I listen to Redzone for anyway. Great job, once again by the mix engineers, they really make Redzones music shine and sound far superior to, Phill Tann, Ms Lago, and the rest of the flavor of the months.

If I can catch this on sale, I may pick it up.,.the bitches cant sing, dont get it twisted, but it does have its own thing going on.

  38. irrational rationalist

daaaaaaamnnnn at all the hate…the album is BOMB!…loves it…they keep it real…

oh and sarah isnt the chick with a baby…its lesley

  39. Leonie

Nuh, Sarah is the one with the baby and gosh, why so many haters?!

  40. Renae

Why are we even still talking about this? He was wrong but dam, he still deserves to live and go out in public like all the rest of us! How many celebrities have done the same thing he did or worse and did not receive half as much criticism nor did it draw as much media attention? And I’m not supporting any of them because when you commit a serious crime you need to be held accountable for it but I don’t see this as a serious crime. I honestly feel he should only get community service, this case shouldn’t even still be in court.

Its never right for any adult to put their hands on another adult for any reason. Domestic Violence happens everyday in someones life and where is their help, where is all the support at for the poor and middle class. They call the cops and their man/woman is back at the house before they can hang up the receiver and we know its true. If this was a white celebritiy couple this would have been over with. Tyrese and the Winans guy did the same thing, why aren’t we still talking about them. Abuse is abuse, whether it leaves a bruise or not. Is this only drawing this much attention because it happened to involve RiRi who is in at the moment and because they are 2 young black people? White people know what to do which isn’t much because we hang each other, what if some of us weren’t given 2nd chances.

  41. Renae

My bad, thought I put this under Chris Brown.

  42. irrational rationalist

    you right my bad…

  43. Diamond Latrelle

Nice Looking Girls. Horrible Album Cover. Not Feeling Those 3 Tracks Listed Above. Its sounds like one person is doing all of the vocals and the other members are humming silently. We should petition that Tamia, Mya, Monica and Nicole Wray become a group with producers and songwriters Neyo, Babyface, Warren Campbell, R.Kelly, Brian Alexander Morgan, Timbaland, Rich Harrison, Dave Foster, Diane Warren, Rahsann Patterson,Neptunes, Darryl Simmons,Robin Thicke, B.Cox and some the producers from Usher’s “Confessions” album and producers from all of Brandy’s album.. OK – Who’s with me???????

  44. WTF. . .

The album is dope…LOVE ELECTRIK RED!

  45. ME

    BOO…BOO….Booooooooooo….NEXT!

  46. Jai

    There’s only two good tracks
So Good and Bed Rest which is the best track on the whole album…
And their Vocals are never challenging..
    I wish them well
Too bad I had high hopes….
Bed Rest IS the highlight of the whole album

  47. Focused1

I was ready to write these girls off, because I only liked So Good which is their 3rd single, but their album is actually good! They’re sound is obviously influenced by Kelis and TLC. Who I’m big fans of. A mix of Vanity 6 too. The whole sound of the album to me is just simply fun, fresh music perfect for the summer. Good job ladies and The Dream for the good production. I gotta learn to stay in the habit of giving artists a chance even if I’m not feeling like their singles because I’ve ended up liking an artists’ album even though I didn’t like their singles three times recently from what I recall who were this group of course, Lady Gaga, and Lily Allen.

  48. Manda
