CL BEAUTY: GOING NATURAL
Friday, May 1, 2009

These days, more sisters are embracing their natural hair - straying away from harsh relaxers and drying chemicals for a more free feel to their hair. The transition to going natural can be a tough and lengthy decision for some (chopping off your hair/growing out a relaxer) - but, the end result can be well worth it.
In entertainment, where glam and long lengths are to the full front - it’s always great to see others like India Arie, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu hit the stage with natural dope hairstyles. Its also great to see the growing movement of locking, that’s has even been considered trendy these days despite its roots and historic value.

So with natural and non-relaxed hair becoming more emphasized and popularized - its important to learn where to start and how to transition if you are thinking about taking this step. Here is a list of site where you can do your research and get help on beginning this journey - whether it be for natural curls, a super fro, or long dreads:
It’s also important to know that straight hair isn’t the only type of hair with alot of styling options - that are many fly natural styles to choose from as well! Check these blogs on ideas for styling:

These fierce ladies show that you can be just as fab in Hollywood with natural locs! Who is your favorite natural hair’d celebrity? These aren’t the only ones of course, so feel free to shout out the ladies I forgot to feature!

I don’t knock people who wear perms but you guys should research on it. You can still straighten your hair and rock straight look without having to put relaxer in ur hair. I do it all the time…and I like that I can still go back to my natural look.

I really hate when people refer to LOCS as dreads. What’s “dread” about them? And how the term “dread” came to manifestation is what’s really dreadful. Big up for the Natural Hairstyle shoutout…

It is really not a difficult transition at all!!
I went natural by getting my hair pressed instead of relaxing. It blended right in and no one even knew I was half curly half straight. I did it while my hair was cut really short like Kelis’ too. Then I finally clipped the straight ends off last January and I now I always rock my curly fro! I love it! it’s much easier and if I want the straight look I can just press it out! Alot of hairdressers can press your natural hair with just a flat iron it’s not a hard transition at all!!

Concreteloop, Thank you for doing such a post. Somehow I am not surprised that there aren’t as many comments here as I’ve seen on other posts (maybe it’s too early in the day). This site regularly gives “ace time” to those sisters that are committed to wearing their natural hair or texture.
One style of locks that I thought I should mention is Sisterlocks (which I wear). I really hate to distinguish them from other locks (because really it is all the same to me) but I must admit that people who had not considered traditional locks stop me almost weekly to ask about mine. I would be more than happy to provide you with some pics. While I am not a model, I would love to share with other young women who are considering another form of locks other than traditional palm-rolled.
Keep up the good posts CL.

Me going natural happened as a result from me wearing micro braids for way too long, then getting a relaxer the very next day after taking them out (dumb…I know). The relaxer started burning about 2 min after he applied it to my hair, and of course, became unbearable. The relaxer had no chance to take, so I ended up cutting it all off because I couldn’t do the half ‘fro half relaxed thing
Anyhoo…Going natural was the best thing I could’ve done for my hair! My hair has always been thick, but now it just feels healthier all around. The biggest thing for me to get over was that everyone wasn’t gonna like it. That bothered me alot in the beginning, but now I’m like whatever. My hair is the ISH!!! I can press is straight, wear a weave, braid it, ‘fro it, twist it… The options r endless. I thought that life would be miserable without relaxers, but I was soooo wrong.

great article Concreteloop
you have much more versatility when you’re natural. even though it’s hard to figure out how to work with your hair at first, it’s really worth it.
anyone who presses, take a look at this website
http://www.milstan.com
I saw a youtube vid and the iron seems ten times better (and easier to use) than a pressing comb. I haven’t seen any vids on really kinky hair yet (they said they were working on getting new vids up when I asked) but the little girl’s hair came out GORGEOUS….
http://www.youtube.com/wa...bmuww&feature=related
and just so everyone knows, Michelle Obama does not perm her hair. I’m sick and tired of seeing ppl on another popular gossip site that I won’t mention posting comments about how “Michelle needs to get her roots done” and “they need to comb that child’s hair” blah blah blah.
and bigup to the Japanese people rockin dreads and getting nappy perms

Hello ladies, This is absolutely wonderful! You DON’T have to cut off your perm to transition to being natural… go to http://www.naturallyisis.com to find out more information about natural hair care and products that will help you maintain and grow your hair. Isis has been doing natural hair for the past 30 years and was the first in the State of Texas to be grandfathered to do braids and natural hair and teach natural hair care techniques in the state of Texas. Great photos CL! Check out Isis’ site for more in depth information and add it to your blogroll!

I haven’t had a perm in over 10 years. And I’ll never use one again. EVER!
It is a common misconception that you must cut your hair to grow out of a perm.
All you have to do is deep condition the hair once a week and wash it every other week (or as often as necessary-depending upon your hair type.)
Then, if you want to wear it straight, press your roots and all unpermed portions of the hair first. Then wait until the flat iron cools down and press the permed portions of the hair later.
That’s it!

I have been natural for almost 3 years ( June 1 is my 3rd anniversary). I absolutely love my hair! For the first time, I feel absolutely comfortable and absolutely divinely me. I am no longer afraid to go out in the rain and don’t have to sit underneath a hair dryer for hours on end or fear chemical burns from the perm. I decided to go natural after my hair was fallling out like crazy.
Natural hair also has so much versatility. I can wear my hair in twists, braid it or just wear it out and curly after a twist out! I get so many compliments on my hair. And men find it sexy! Ladies try it and I guarantee you will feel totally free!

Goin natural is great. You really get in touch with your beauty when you do it. We’ve been tricked into thinking if your hair isn’t down your back straight or if you wear your hair they way is naturally you are beautiful, sexy, fine … whatever. DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE SISTAS! Rock your natural hair.. My motto is if you are really pretty who gives a damn what you do to your hair. Might not be such a good example, but Cassie is currently rockin this crazy cut of the side hairstyle, but she’s still very pretty.
Go for yall!

I went natural 2 years ago and I will NEVER put a relaxer in my hair again. I always had long hair as a kid but during my late teens I abused my hair with excessive heat and so it broke off and became short (neck length). So I decided to cut it all off and go natural and my hair has grown so much in 2 years its crazy.
Websites like motowngirl.com, growafrohairlong.com and afrobella really inspired me and have offered so much help. Once you learn how to do your real hair you’ll realise that you don’t need relaxers. There are no black hair shops where I am but I have learnt how to look after my hair using natural products and by doing lots of research. Hopefully more and more women will continue to do the same.
And I have to add that I love CL even more now, you guys have realy stepped up your game, especially Angel and Tiana- well done!

Love this post. I have been natural for five years now. The process of growing my hair out was pretty easy, it only took a year and a half. Although I don’t have a perm, I usually wear my hair straight. I flat iron it myself with my $13 flat iron from wal mart and the whole process of washing and styling my own hair is an hour and a half on average. The only thing I hate is when it is humid early in the mornings or when it is going to rain. That’s why I have lots of hats. Anyway, I think I made a great decision and I love the versatility I have with styling my hair.

I want to get as natural as I possibly can without going straight commando. So I use all natural shampoo, conditioner, etc… and avoid those harmful cosmetic ingredients (read the labels folks), but I still relax.
For those who want to try a “chemical free” relaxer try Phytospecific. My hair has been the healthiest its been in years since I started using it and I can still rock a natural look because it’s never bone straight.

I’ve been perm free and natural since December of 2004. Let me tell you, it’s a great feeling. My hair has so much more volume and it can hold any shape.
I’m not super-super natural like most, because I flat iron it.
The transition wasn’t exactly easy, because I have multiple textures due to a rather mixed ancestry (bone straight on the top, spiral curls in the back, and kinky by the temples.) But contrary to what most have heard, you don’t have to cut your hair off and start fresh. Just keep it well conditioned and moisturized and trim the ends here and there.
The best flat iron that I can recommend is the MaxiGlide and it’s straightening gel. (bed bath and beyond has the best price if you use one of their coupons.) The pins allow for you to comb through your hair rather than press down on it, and the gel keeps your hair straight for days on end. One time I went 7 days without running a flat iron through it and it still looked as straight and shiny as day 1

Ross’ curly fro, but I mostly keep my hair straight. My hair stylist had been begging me for over 4 years to go natural, but I was afraid of how it would look. I am so glad I took her advise! B/C now I have a completly different texture of hair than when I had the perm. My hair is EXTREMELY thick & FULL of body!!!! I LOVE being natural!!!! My fav natural chick is Michelle Obama!!!

Friday, May 1, 2009 /
I’ve been happy nappy for 5 years now!!! I reluctantly went natural after getting braids for the first and last time. The procedure of getting braids caused my follicles to become infected at the crown of my head (Hello, bald spots). I think the more we rock it, the more corporate America and other black women will see it as the norm. Unfortunately, it’s still a challenge. Nevertheless, My nappy gives me this strut, this confidence… when people stare; I hold my head higher and strut harder.
P.S. If you do decide to go natural, you can still blow-dry it… if you like….
You won’t believe the length and health of it.
Until then, do you!!!

Wow I am pleasantly suprised to see this especially with the Weave revolution going on (not knocking it) I just find it shocking how many ppl weave it up these days. I went natural a about a year ago, and it was haaard I was - that close to getting a perm a couple of times lol. But i like it and when i want it str8 i can just straighten it. SOme times i do miss not having to go thru all that, and ppl talking who might like at me like im soul sista/ black power (even if i am some of that lol) just because im natural like im not normal. But i have gotten lots of positive feed back too.

I’m a guy and very very straight. This post is so fucking sexy might I add. I have to say that I find it amazing to see women who are confident and secure in their selves and their bodies to go and chop off years of oppression. When I find a women who is not wearing a weave, the assertiveness it exudes makes my dick hard.
When she knows that her mother probably made the decision for her to get a perm, but she has returned to her roots. That she knows that there will be a challenge in not having the long locks down her back; it will give her time to find inward peace. To realize the beauty she holds without a lacefront falling from her face.
I have locs myself now and I started growing out my hair in January 2005. Loced on 9/28/05. Almost four years now.
I have colored and abused my hair but when it is freshly twisted I still get hella compliments on it. When women take care of themselves and do their hair, that is one of the most sexiest things they can do .Especially when women go out of their way to respect and pay homage to being who they were born to be and not who theyve been created.
I’m proud of this site for making this post, encouraging these young impressionable black women to make a choice, a change, realize that their shit aint growing, YES, because its being affected. When you take your body out of its element it responds accordingly - it DOESNT respond. When you eat bullshit, though most people do it mindlessly, your body responds accordingly. And people wonder why theyre so big..
But the difference between people who have natural hair and are nice, sexy looking, dont have to wear make up and do all the numbers to feel beautiful is that step by step , day by day, these people, men and women, make the choice and have the courage to challenge themselves for something different. To know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with change.
For me monotony in my life bores the hell out of me. To see a beautiful women with a short cut or locs, or sisterlocs, or non-weaved braids, looking sexy and confident is one of the most amazing and chest-flexing feelings Ive had.
WOMEN - do it!
We always talk about what white people do, but theyre talking about what we do, too.

i decided to go natural last week. my mom thinks im crazy but she was born with nice coolie hair and my hair is just thick and hard to comb. i think i made the decision because perm makes hair drop out in heaves. everyday there is hair on the floor. it eventually got so bad i had to chop most of it off. it’s grown back since then but i’m definetly not going back.

I haven’t had a relaxer in a year, and I recently cut off all of my relaxed hair. I thought I would be sad but I was actually excited to be done with the relaxed hair, dealing with 2 different textures was a pain after a few months w/ no relaxer. My mother had my hair relaxed when I was just 5 years old! Going natural was really about discovering myself as a young women and also my curiosity about the natural texture of my hair.
I am so happy even though my hair is short now. Right now I’m wearing braids mainly because I am little nervous as to my friends and family reaction which will be why did you cut all of your “long, pretty” hair off, but oh well they are just going to have to get over it. My hair will eventually grow back and I don’t plan on relaxing it ever again!
Thanks for the links to the websites!

Good post. More people should know that they can style their naps.
I’m not gonna say “natural hair” b/c some black people’s hair is not like those pics above.
I say BE YOURSELF. Don’t stop straightening your hair b/c you feel oppressed by the white man…trust me, the white man ‘these days’ could give a hoot about how your hair looks. Barack and Michelle are in the white house, playa.
If you like straight hair, you can staighten it while natural too. I did that for 2 years. Only problem is water, sweat, humidity…and I live in the South. I was flat-ironing once a week.
But for me right now, I can get most of those styles w/ my relaxer (besides the locs), and It’ll be easier to comb. It’s hard to get MY naps into a simple ponytail, so I am gonna keep it perming.

MY LAST RELAXER WAS AUG 2007 AND MY BC WAS FEB 14 2009!!!!
SINCE MY BIG CHOP I’M REALLY GETTING THE HANG OF THIS NATURAL THING! IM GLAD IM DECIDED TO MAKE THIS DECISION YOUNG! NOW IM FOCUSED ON GETTING MY LENGTH BACK! ITS A LITTLE PAST MY COLLAR BONE NOW. MY GOAL IS WAIST LENGTH!
WHEN I HAD A RELAXER MY HAIR WAS AT MY BOOBS BUT IT WOULD NEVER GROW PAST THAT BECAUSE IT ALWAYS BROKE OFF AND SPLIT UGH!!!
IM NEVER GOING BACK!!!!!!!

I feel that for me, having locs would be LESS freeing. That’s like only having 40-60 strands of hair on yo head. :/ you can only do so much with it. The other styles, yeah, you’re free from required touch-ups.
I would go natural if I was gonna wear a fro all the time. otherwise it’s too difficult to style, imo, how i would prefer it to look.
But don’t be fooled ladies, no matter how you wear your hair- straight, indian remy, nappy, curly, dreded—you are a black, beautiful woman, and no hair”style” is gonna change that.

@ CHIGO
IF YOU DECIDE YOU DONT WANT YOUR LOCKS ANYMORE, DEPENDING ON HOW MATTED THE LOCS ARE SOMETIMES THEY CAN DETANGLE SOME OF IT FROM THE ROOTS AND IT’LL SAVE YOU SOME LENGTH BUT MOST OF THE ENDS WILL BE DAMAGED AND ALOT OF SHEDDED HAIR WILL BE CAUGHT UP IN IT
BUT YOU SHOULD TRY TO GET SOME DREADLOCK EXTENTIONS AND TRY THOSE OUT FOR A WHILE

Thank you! I quit getting relaxers in 07, but I still wear my hair straight, and no one is the wiser unless I tell them. Simply ironing out my hair with a ceramic iron achieves the bone straight look, that I had when I was getting relaxers on the regular. My hair is still long as well.

I agree 100% that natural hair is the best way to go. I went natural a year ago and I am totally in love with my hair now. It’s healthier, it grows faster and I can do almost anything (drive with my windows down, go to beach, run though a drizzle of rain) and not be worried how my hair will look. I can’t wait for my locs to get should length so that I can wear them in spirals etc.
The texture of my hair is softer than I had imagined! I get more compliments about my hair then when it was relaxed. The transition to natural hair was easier than I though…. I chopped off the relaxed ends and braided the new growth with natural twist and started the locking process. After my hair got to a length that I could wear it neatly the braids came out and my locs were beneath.
At work not everyone embraces natural hair but that’s too bad for them. Natural sisters are here to stay!!

Tracee Ellis Ross and Yaya both have texturisers. A texturiser is like a weak relaxer, and it means that you’re NOT natural any more, so they don’t belong on the natural list any more.
I’ve been natural for two years (I talk about it more on my website HealthySistersUnite!). I imagined something really hard, but I LOVE my hair and how simple it is. You can never say never, but I hope that I NEVER relax or straighten my hair. One day black girls will actually CHOOSE between being relaxed or natural, instead of feeling relaxed is the only normal option for them.

This is indeed an excellent post! Ladies, we are as great as our creator made us.
Say no to self hate!!!!! and this is “if the shoes fit, wear it” remark. Some women perm and love themselves; some women don’t. I too, wanted to act like some black women couldn’t hate themselves. I heard otherwise. It’s shocking the amount of women and men said we are cursed because of our hair, lol!
I think God, was giving us a gift because he knew black women “would be queens” and love styling their hair in different styles and just being regal. I see no other women that can style their hair in so many different ways.
We can go from kinky to curly to straight with our own hair. Other when can’t go from kinky to straight, so be happy with what God gave us.

THANK YOU for doing this post!! Growing out my perm and leaving my natural curls out to breathe is definitely one of the best decisions I’ve EVER made on my own. No matter how much mom and aunties said not to, it definitely was the start of me making my own decisions and living MY definition of beauty. Plus, it’s so versatile, SOOOO much healthier, and I get WAYY more compliments on my natural hair than when it was chemically straightened. I’m in a total lofe affair with it; I can’t stop touching it. Although the natural hair market is not as apparent in the media and drugstore aisles, it is definitely out there!! My favorite site is naturallycurly.com!

WOW This is truly a beautiful post. I went natural by wearing a weave for a year straight and my hair grew VERY long VERY Fast. I could not believe the health and length of my hair. I kept it natural for about a month and succumbed to my boyfriend’s & mom’s jabs about being “nappy”. I couldn’t have been more stupid. No sooner than six months my hair begin to thin horribly from relaxers even with waiting six weeks in between. Now I have started to do it all over again….and keep it that way. I never really gave it a chance and I really could have enjoyed the outcome. For a person who has never had really long hair and to see the difference of hair in a years time, Natural is the ONLY way to go for me and I promised myself no matter how ignorant others maybe I will keep my natural hair for ME!

It’s not that I’m ashamed it’s just less time consuming. I get relaxers probably about every 9 months and I have no shame whatsoever. Loc’ed since ‘06 after two-strands and YEARS of micro-braids. At one point I was perming and braiding just to keep a sleek look. It still took me awhile to embrace locs but one night I saw these sisters in the grocery store who looked like video models but they were all loc’ed and that convinced me that you don’t have to be a certain way to loc. I cut my hair, did two strands for about a year and then loc’ed. I’m very, very happy, I feel like it reflects me as a creative, sexy, unique woman. Now that I’m loc’ed I have aeen so many woman in so many walks of life wearing locs and natural hair all kinds of different ways. I’m sorry our celebs don’t embrace it more…but that’s them. I encourage anyone who is interested to try it…or at least do the research there are so many myths.

@YOYA…Actually, maintaining Natural curls can be just as pricey as getting a relaxer every six weeks. I get my ends clipped every eight weeks, hot oil treatments, and pressed and curled when I want to wear it straight. I’ve been Natural for about four years now from being on and off with it and I have to say it is very liberating to not have to stress about relaxed hair; the many relaxer burns, getting it wet, and most of all breakage. Natural hair has with all hair types, is more manageable when it’s taken care of and that can be pricey…

Thanks so much for this! Natural hair is healthy, beautiful and versatile. It’s great that we have lots of options and sisters ought to do exactly what they want with their hair. However, it would be mentally and spiritually healthy if we could get past the good-hair bad hair slave mentality syndrome. Women who rock natural styles look confident and beautiful. We also get hordes of compliments. If you’re interested or doubtful, please read Alice Walker’s “Oppressed Hair Puts A Ceiling On The Brain” from Living By The Word. Enuff said!

#120, I know a lady who has gorgeous locs, but she pays the same to get it twisted and washed as the next woman would to get relaxers, washes, color, etc., so I get what you are saying. She never does her own hair. She said she likes for someone else to do it. Her daughter is natural as well w/2 strand twists. I personally do not believe in little girls, 4-12 years old, getting relaxers. I see so many little girls with invisible hair lines and no hair in the back. I personally have never had issues w/relaxers and color such as breaking off, burns, falling out, etc., so it was never a big deal to me. I do not need a relaxer, but I think for a lot of people, it’s something done out of habit.

Wow! I’ve been natural all my life and one thing i despise is when people refer to going natural or being natural as a movement.
Why does hair have to be such a political statement. That’s why some black girls do not want to go natural because of fear of being associated with a revolution or movement.

I researched for 5 years and talked to ladies who had already loc’d their hair. I never liked relaxers. As a child I had long, thick, beautiful hair, but as an adult it was limp, thin, and dull due to chemicals. In August of 2007 after spending all day removing fake hair from head that I had worn in twists I had a “waiting to exhale moment” and cut all of my hair off. I wore a natural for a month and in September 2007 I loc’d my hair using the latch hook method. It is the best decision I ever made in my life. I feel so much better about myself. It was a big self-esteem builder and I feel so beautiful and sexy. I don;t have to worry about the weather and I can wear my hair in so many different styles just like I did with a relaxer, except I don’t have to worry about my hair “falling” or looking a mess because it rained or it is humid. It was a physical and spiritual journey for me. Other than battling others ignorance (including my family and friends) I have received nothing but positive feedback. I use Tah Waajid natural haircare products which can be ordered online if you can’t fine them in the store. She uses all natural ingrediens and she is a sista so I like supporting her. The products are light and non greasy and do not build up. The website is http://www.blackearthproducts.com or http://www.naturalhair.org. Going natural is not about saving money because I spend money to have it “tightened” and on natural haircare products just like I did with a relaxer. Peace, love, and hairgrease! Be blessed!

see that’s the beautiful thing about natural hair: the freedom! even if you don’t have loose curls like traycee ellis ross, you’ll still love your hair. natural hair works for every woman that wants to make it work for her. if you can, hit up some of the suggested sites, because you will see ALL types of women rocking great natural hair…biracial, multiracial and yes african (like you asked). all hair textures (because that’s what your referring to) can be grown and maintained with a lot of care. personally from what i’ve seen, every woman has hair that grows in some kind of curl pattern. however, it’s just the tightness or looseness of the curl (one’s hair type) that varies from woman to woman…but i have seen some women on hair sites who have said that their hair has NO curl pattern. so i guess it depends on who you ask.
i added a few links of a young woman with (what she describes as) afro-hair. afro-hair can be translated to meaning that she has coarse, kinky hair. her natural hair journey is incredible…and she proves that you can have and GROW great hair in ANY texture.

It’s so refreshing to see Concrete loop celebrate natural hair. Going on 4 years here, its a rebirth, an awakening. Caring for your hair encourages you to care for the rest of your body and soul.
If I can give one piece of advice, if you’re going to go natural, use natural products, no petroleum or commercial products. Shea butter and mix of vegetable glycerin & water is all you need. Vegetable glycerin makes my hair super soft, softer than any commercial conditioner, AND it’s natural. Also try sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent breakage.
Good luck with any woman on a new natural hair journey!

@84 re: … some black people’s hair is not like those pics above.
I am SOOOOO glad someone said that. So many people who are “natural” don’t want to be “nappy.” I HATE HATE HATE that the natural hair movement has become just another way for certain black people to obsess over long/curly hair.
I think way too many people think “natural” equals the whole Joan from Girlfriends look. I found out quickly that my hair was NOT going to do that. I went through alot over that, especially since on a lot of these so-called “natural” sites, all you will see is curly curly and more curly. I went to that natural hair expo here in ATL last month. Baby, if there were 400 products being hawked there, 200 of them were curling pomades and 199 of them were curling devices! I find it all so frustrating - it’s just another form of self hate.
I won’t go on and on, but I blogged about this: http://shade4days.blogspo...o-be-nappy-not-quite.html
If you want to go natural, by all means, do it. But be realistic about what it means and understand that you may not get what you think you will get - but that doesn’t mean your hair isn’t any good. You also can get a curly look with twist outs if that’s what you like.
Ironically I get ‘waves’ with my twist out - but I prefer it to ‘fro out! lmao I also like locs that are bigger rather than those skinny ass ones. Go figure!

Bravo! I love to see a site where being natural is ‘hot’ and not ‘extreme’. (I’ve heard some insults that were supposed to be complements, TRUST. ) Anyway..
@ Chigo, locks do not make your hair fall out. I’ve heard stuff like that before.. It’s all supposed to scare you off from the style. I’ve also heard that relaxers make your hair grow and if you stop getting them your hair will fall out. This is also not true. Though sometimes the relaxed hair will fall off, it’s only because of the damage previously done to it, not the fact that you went natural. Infact, most people have to actually CUT the hair off. So that’s not true. If you’d like to give locks a try shop around for the best price if you want them done in a salon, or you can just do it yourself. (It is not as hard as some make it look, trust me. )
As for the cutting of locks if you don’t want them anymore, that is KINDA true. You can pick them loose, but it would probably be mostly a waste of time, since locks are formed from shed hair. Meaning, when you pick that long long lock apart, most of the hair will just drop off, as it is shed hair anyway. Locs were pretty much meant as a permanent hair style, as it takes so long to acheive, and is nearly impossible to pick apart. If you do decide on locks, know that you will more than likely have to cut them off if you don’t want them anymore. (And for all those ‘experts’ out there, I actually have locks.. I’m not just blowin’ it out my butt here. I have a little experience. :p )
Anyway the most important thing is to have your mind set to do it. Just like going natural it takes having a well made up mind or you’ll just go back to the usual. People are going to have all sorts of ‘advice’ for you. (Especially advice to NOT do it.) You have to weed out all the crap and just get the straight truth. Say thank you, and go for what you know is best.

Oh and Chigo, you don’t have to cut off all your hair to lock. It’s not well known, or frequently told, but you can even start with RELAXED hair. (If white folks can lock, what makes you figure yours is too slick with a relaxer to lock? )
However, that relaxed hair may be damaged and may break and the lock may not look the same all the way down. But you can always take care of your loose natural hair, then start your locks once you get some growth.
A good site to take a look at is http://www.nappturality.com , you’ll need to let Dee know you’re wanting to join if you have a ‘free’ email address. (hotmail, gmail, yahoo, ect.) because of all the spammers comin’ up in there. But the site is FULL of information. It will do you good to check it out.

Just because a black woman’s hair is curly does not mean she has a texturizer, or is mixed ,in some cases this is true for either but not all. Our hair comes in so many varieties and most of us have more than one texture on our heads anyway. So let’s not go talking about things we are unsure of.
And for those of you who are new or thinking about going natural, don’t free your self from the relaxers and get bound into natural hair typing. No one’s texture whether straight, curly, or kinky is better than the other, it’s just different.

I ‘ve been “semi-nautral” as I like to call it for 2 years now. What I mean by semi-natural is I only relax my hair 2-3 times a year, which means I stretch my relaxers. I love doing this b/c I still have the option to wear my hair curly, too. My hair is much more THICK, and overall healthy. And anytime I need my hair bone straight, I just break out the CHI iron. It straightens your hair like you’ve just had a fresh perm. Don’t believe me? You guys can check out my pics at

I love being natural. Its the best decision I’ve ever made and honestly, I feel prettier now than ever. Sometimes I have my regrets about not having cute springy curls, but I would rather have my nappilcious hair than anything else.

Ladies, save your edges!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A pretty face and straight hair doesn’t look cute with bald spots and a hair line that starts behind your ears. Go natural at the first sign of thinning…. Nice post and I’ve been “kinky” for more than 5 years.
