As promised, Amerie is back with her new single, “Why R U?” from her upcoming fourth studio album, In Love & War. This will be Amerie’s first project released via Def Jam Records. The new single was produced by The Buchanans, who Amerie worked with on her last album, Because I Love It…, as well as Touch.
I can appreciate the ’90′s flavor Amerie was going for this time around, but I think she’s still trying to sell us on the old Rich Harrison sound, even down to the vocal arrangements, and it’s just not the same chemistry because it’s just not Rich Harrison.

this song is blazin! i have always loved the mixture of amerie’s slick vocals over raw hip-hop beats. this also sounds like nothing rich harrison produced, so i don’t know where brian got that from.
Its not bad since she can not do much with her vocals.

Actually, this song sounds nothing like Rich Harrison…Rich Harrison is known for his go-go ish type of vibe. DC Go-Go and 90′s are def not the same thing.
I honestly like Amerie and think the songs good, BUT I don’t think it’d do well as a single. Additionally although I wouldn’t say she ever had the greatest vocals, it sounds as if she’s straining a bit on this one. Best of luck to her though.

Brian this does sound like recycled Rich Harrison. Beyonce came and took over the Rich Harrison stuff, but Amerie really has got to find a new sound even though she used him first. I really like her though, her songs are like fresh air.

I really like Amerie and at first the song was sounding aight til it got to the chorus. I’m not feeling this one, but I really hope she come out with something blazing. Unlike alot of girls out, this chic can actually sing.

Guess I’m in the minority but I love this one… It has a summer vibe to me. Cook-out, chillen in Hanes Point, road trip kind of sound IMO. Downloading it.. But agreed when someone said she needs to work on her vocals.. maybe work with a vocal coach or something.

Only real hip-hop and r&b heads can appreciate this quality track. Amerie has always been a breath of fresh compared to these other r&b chicks. She went a little avant garde on us with her “Because I Love It” album but I see she’s coming back to her hip-hop roots. The only bone I have to pick with this single is that it sounds more like a fall track than a summer banger.

When inthe game you have a beyoncé, a rihanna, a ciara, a keyshia, a keri, a jennifer hudson, a jazmine sullivan…. u cant coe with that song as a FIRST SINGLE cuz its not strong enough, but I must say I love the song and I am a huge fan of the beats from the 90′s like lil kim’s last single. I like the song, but is it enough as a first single? Does she have a signature melody for ‘oh oh’? cuz it seems that u can always recognize her singin that lol

I agree with both perspectives, but I’m a big Beyonce fan & Amerie is the only other girl that gives me what I need. Only this time around its obvious that she needs to come harder, possibly a big dance record. Although I actually like this track…its more of a album filler. I still bump “1 Thing” heavy these days, so hopefully it can be something as timeless as that. We’re all rooting for her so I pray that she can come back on top…especially since she’s not releasing any nudes or drastic hair changes for attention. Thank God

As an afterthought.. I think the problem with her songs is that they are always very short, have no bridge – break in the melody – and usually are 90% chorus. She needs to work on that.
I am a fan of Amerie. But. Its seems that every song that Amerie has sounds the same to me. Her voice is good, but it needs more depth. I already know how the song will sound before is listen to it.

Wow, tough crowd in here lol. I’m in the minority on this, I think the song is hot. It captures the essence of the 90s which is one of the best eras for R&B. I think what some people are looking for is for her to recreate One Thing, and she already did that with Gotta Work. Also I don’t know what people are talking about this has summer jam written all over it. This could be a hit if promoted correctly. Good job Amerie, you’ve got my support girl.
