As promised, Amerie is back with her new single, “Why R U?” from her upcoming fourth studio album, In Love & War. This will be Amerie’s first project released via Def Jam Records. The new single was produced by The Buchanans, who Amerie worked with on her last album, Because I Love It…, as well as Touch.
I can appreciate the ’90′s flavor Amerie was going for this time around, but I think she’s still trying to sell us on the old Rich Harrison sound, even down to the vocal arrangements, and it’s just not the same chemistry because it’s just not Rich Harrison.

I’m guessing you never listened to any of her albums because none of them sound the same. Before passing judgment, do your research.
after all this time Amerie could have come with something better. It sound to me on the chorus of the song she is struggling vocally. Do her people really think this is Radio Friendly? I hear they are going for an old school hip hop feel.. but it is not completely working for me. Maybe when a hot producer remixes this song and puts a different beat on it, it will be better. and honestly I’m tired of songs about girls crying over dudes, missing and obsessing over them. It is time for a great summer love song!!!!
I love this girl so much but HATE this track. I mean I was excited when I saw this post becuz i’ve been waiting for her return but I am hella disapointed…they better not release this. I only got to the first chorus, I reallllllly hate this.

Well I guess I’m in the minority, because I am really feeling this song. Amerie brings something that some of the mainstream people don’t have and can’t even reach for. She is an actual talent, and really like this song. Hopefully she will bring the heat that she needs to garner her more respect and space as a true artist.
I really like Amerie but this sounds like a left over from one of her last albums. She needs to take a risk and try something different.
This song will grow on most of you…..you will all be hummin it pretty soon and then finally singing the lyrics, then comes the head thump and before you know it you will be on the dance floor jamming to it………especially when little wayne, jay z, TI, or one of them rappers bless it with verse! Brian you’re off base. As stated before, this sounds nothing like Rich Harrison. If anything it sounds like Chucky Thompson/early Bad Boy. Her vocal arrangements are very early Mary J. I don’t think this is the strongest song, but I think its good enough for me to be interested in what her album will sound like.
I love the track!! Its a throw back that is so called for. She has her own song that Beyonce/Cicra pop head can’t wrap there small minds around. I love the fact that when the radio plays one of her song I can pick her voice out unlike the other ladies out there. Its to the point they all song the same. And for the person who said there are tired of chick crying n depressed over guys in there songs Helloo that’s RnB! It they make a hot video for the song she’ll out sell any female out there now. So glad they dont have her sounding like every other female artist out there right now…but on the other hand in order to have a hit your music must sound like material that are in the moment…so idk I will support her!

A song not talking about shaking ass or material things or all the other BS thats out right now. A song with some substance and real life lyrics and you folks want to hate. Damn shame! All of us who don’t dig that artificial BS glamorous, autotune, degrading ish! stand up!

great song! its different from everything else and her vocal arrangements are incredible! and this sounds nothing like rich to me, but its whatever, thats how you feel. i think that another single will come up though.but either way, def jam is going to reinvent her, so the end result will be interesting.
I’m lovin’ this!!!! It does have a 90′s feel to it. I’ve always liked Amerie. Her voice sounds different from the other ladies out right now. And, her musical style sounds different too. You don’t always have to come out with a head “banger” for it to be good.

I think this song is hot! Yes, I may have a little bias because she’s from DC/MD… but i love the 90s flava in the song. Amerie has a vocal range that is broader than a lot of females toppin the charts these days. Her voice is raspy..and it suits her…I love it. Her vocal arrangments/chords–off the chain. I heard she does her own vocal arrangments.
I just think Brian is quick to judge before letting the song grow on him. Not every song appeals to everyone after the first listen. Everyone doesn’t want to try soooo hard to be different to sell records..aka Solange (although..I looooove Solange)…i’m just saying, not everyone wants to be a hipster. Amerie is bringing back the old school Mary J Blige flavor. Which I like!!!!

I love it! It’s a great beat… very hiphopish and the tone of her voice is unique and hot!
I guess it has to grow on me ,,,dont really care for the hook tho. Love some Amerie wish she had more success. I don’t want to lose my life but I actually think she is one of the very few that could give Bey a run for her money BUT the machine behind her is weak. She needs better promotion and new material and I think she can go far.

The song is ok and she has a unique voice but she should have hooked up with the Dream or Jaime Foxx to help write some songs. This song shouldn’t have been the first to come out she she have came with a club banger and then this.

No one is Hating. The truth hurts and the truth is that it sounds like her other music. She should come out with something more refreshing. Honestly she can hold a tune but you can’t tell if she has range. I say team up with a Rock band and develop a different voice. I think we are all getting tired of hearing the crap that’s out today. Well at least I am. BRING SOME SUBSTANCE!!! Don’t release anymore SH%$ because you only have one more chance and the public will consider you a MONICA or BRANDY-washed up. No matter what they do… it will take another 5 albums before they ever get a #1

Wow I love this chicks voice, she sounds diffrent than all of these wispy chicks out here. She has that Mary J, (but can actually stay in key) vibe. I love the old school loop and the chords in this song.
Plus she’s fucking dumb fly. She has her own lane. Couple of bum notes in there, not sure why she did not re do them, but the song is dope.
Lets be clear on one more thing, Nothing Rich Harrison has ever done had as many chord changes or sections of the song that change.
The hook is diffrent than the verses,. and this song actually has a bridge. Unlike Rich’s stuff that just loops. Rich’s stuff always relied on samples and a few well placed keyboard parts. This sounds nothing like Rich’s stuff its superior. And he has not had a hit in a few…he needs A more than she needs him.

I think the song is OK. I’m an Amerie fan, so I;m hoping her next album is promoted better this time around. She has the talent – just need a really caring team of people behind her to better promote her.
I’m diggin this Amerie. I appreciate her sound, and def think she shouldn’t stray too much from what she does, it works for her… She’ll never be hugely popular and successful, and I’m glad that she isn’t doing this euro pop dance music that EVERY OTHER artist in the industry is doing now. I’m so sick of that sound. Looking forward to seeing what A has to offer on this fourth album.

Amerie is pushin 30 so she aint got too much time in the game. Love her or hate her, Bey is only 27 and worth close to 100 million. The game is not kind to us ladies. We have to get out there and hit it big well before our 30s or its too late cuz the record companies are hurting right now and it’s easier for them to recruit the little teenyboppers. Amerie had beauty and talent in my book but like a lot of good artists she didn’t have that powerful machine Bey has behind her and also Bey may not be that strong a singer but she is a powerful stage presence just like Janet J and Madonna. I have to give the girl credit. She keeps on making that comeback.
