MOVIE TRAILER: PRECIOUS: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire

Lionsgate has debuted the new trailer for Lee Daniels’ ‘Precious’, originally known as ‘Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire’ earlier this week. The film, adapted from the 1996 novel about a teenage girl living in Harlem. The film premiered in January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for best drama, as well as a Special Jury Prize for supporting actress Mo’Nique.

Some of you may remember our post from earlier this year speaking about the film; now with the backing of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry the movie will open in theaters nationwide later this year.

The movie stars: newcomer Gabby Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey and Paula Patton.

As a social worker, I feel EVERYONE should read this book to open your eyes to the abuse that goes on everyday. Saaphire did an amazing job writing this book. From the look of the trailer it looks like Oprah and Tyler did an amazing job bringing this to the big screen. I can’t wait to see it! Plus MJB is on the soundtrack… : )

    i can’t front…one thing is urking me….

Paula Pattons character was initially described in the book as a brown skinned woman with locks….sorry to take it there but the issue of color kind of bothers me….this character was one of the few people who really loved Precious….and now all of the characters who ‘help’ or love her (social worker, hospital nurse) are portrayed by fairer skinned folk…..and those who perpetrate pain and hate on her (her mom, step dad & neighborhood kids) are dark in complexion….

    i just don’t like the sub-concious message this sends….

    @ ROCCO

i agree….this was whitewashed on some level….why NOT have a beautiful brown skin woman tell Precious she is beautiful..its not only more meaningful, it speaks to the truth in the book!

I am really dissapointed that they went in that direction…especially since being dark skinned created such a disallusionment in Precious (very much like Pecola Breedlove in The Bluest Eye) she believed she was ugly because of her color…how much more POWERFUL would it have been if the person who helped herself was also dark in color. It’s just SO rare to see a strong black woman reflected in films as it is but Lee Daniels absolutely had the power to change the same old same old but instead stayed in the same old same old.

I will definitely go and support this film. I cant think of a film lately that has put this strong of a message out there like this. I didnt recognize MC and Mo was very solid from what I see. The young lady in the lead was very convincing in this trailer. I really hope we all go support this film.

@ #64…They could have easily gotten Vanessa Williams (not the singer…the one with the locks) to play the part of Ms. Rain. But, I guess you gotta work from the inside out…I’m just glad that I get a chance to see it on the big screen. Monique seems to have done an awesome job. The director said that Gabby pulled so much into it that they never imagined her character being as deep and realistic as she made her. The Academy better not act brand new next year

@ #42…there is so much that the trailer doesn’t show..if you read the book you will see that. I know because the movie doesnt have a R rating that they will leave a lot out so I definitely suggest reading it. It will be hard to get through especially since Sapphire wrote it the way that Precious speaks. But it is well worth it

I have been telling people about this book for years

  8. laylah

umm why the hell am I crying over a trailer? thats all i wanna know!

  9. Nichole

  10. MiMi

ALL I CAN SAY…..I GOT TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

  11. Twitter/Ms_Hustler

I’m super pressed to see this movie, the book was awesome, I think this movie will be able to reach the attention of young ladies in today’s society of what sadly to say is the image of what is happening. Sapphire hit many points in the book which I hope the movie will live up to, she demonstrated a struggle of a young black illiterate woman, who dreamt and invisioned a better life ofr herself which she PUSHed to obtain, this book is what young people of all races are struggle from, it hits home.

    @ 68
IN LOOKING AT THE CHARACTERS PORTRAYED AS THE CAREGIVERS IN THE FILIM I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOUR PROFOUND WILLIE LYNCH-LIKE OBSERVATION. IT’S A CONSTANT DAILY BATTLE THAT WE AS THE DARKER SKINNED PPL FACE ON A REGULAR BASIS. WE AS A CULTURE HAVE THIS THEORY THAT ALL GOOD COMES FROM FAIRER SKIN…..LIGHTER EYES ETC. THE BOOK DID CLEARLY DESCRIBE THE CHARACTER MS. RAIN AS A DREDLOCKED FEMALE WITH BEAUTIFUL BROWN SKIN. DREDLOCKS ARE CURRENTLY WORN TO THIS VERY DAY…..SO I CAN’T SAY THEY WERE TRYING TO UPDATE OR MODERNIZE THE STORYLINE. SO WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR THIS CASTING FAU PAUX……THERES A BEAUTIFUL DARKSKINNED ACTRESS WHO I FEEL WOULD HAVE DONE THE ROLE OF MS. RAIN REAL JUSTICE……HER NAME ESCAPES ME, HOWEVER, SHE’S PLAYED IN ” WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT ” AND NEW JACK CITY. I BELIEVE HER SURNAME IS STICKNEY.

  28. Bull City Kid

Movie Trailer is Deep. Can’t wait to see the movie

@ # 72…The song in the background is called Destiny by MJB.It’s from the original release of the No More Drama album. They deleted the song of the re-release for some reason..anyone the lyrics go well with the trailer…

  29. Bull City Kid

sorry my comment was mean for # 74

  30. Be A Role Model

    Can”t wait

  31. Flee

Damg! when I saw the preview all I could do is cry. This movie is so necessary and way overdue. It will open people eyes to abuse as well as help kids understand sometimes why they are abused. 9 times out of 10 its because they were abused and didn’t break the cycle.

  32. wow, this looks so powerful…the trailer has me hooked

  33. Take That

This movie is going to be hard to watch. If you haven’t read the book, the book is bananas. The sad thing is this really could be going on in someone’s life.

  34. THICK & SEXY

  36. saint

this book made me so made many years ago. I cannot wait to see the movie. I have tears in my eyes from the trailer. this kind of thing? is happening all over the ghetto and every other place where morals are lost and demons rule the people’s minds. Claireece “Precious” Jackson, my God!!! she is real, she is in the ‘hood, she is in appalachia, she is in beverly hills, my God!!!

i look forward to this film and i pray that it starts a serious movement on exposing doggish pedophiles and mothers start taking a look at the men in their households, and when your daughter or son tells you that man is messing with them? YOU LISTEN, GET YOUR BEHIND UP, GET THE POLICE AND DISCONNECT YOUR HEART FROM THIS DAWGISH MAN!!!

and don’t be a dawgish female.

    this story is BRUTAL.

When I saw the trailer I cried. It brought up so many bad memories and emotions for me because I was abused for my uncle. For years I wouldn’t read books or watch films that had scenes with incest or rape in them, but when I saw the trailer I knew I had to get the book. I read it in one sitting. It was extremely hard for me. I still have emotional scars from what happened to me, but I think I’m better off having read it. My mom told my grandmother what my uncle was doing and my grandmother said that I was lying. My mother didn’t call the police or get me treatment for what happened to me, and my uncle went on to molest lots of other girls in my family incluing my little sister. Thankfully she is too young to remember any of that. I grew up and I never let what happen define me. Even through crippling depression and self-hatred I kept going. I went to University and was the first person on my mom’s side of the family to go. I identified so much with Precious that it’s not even funny.
I feel that I am a stronger individual for having been able to face my own pain and read the book, and I will definitely see the film.
I don’t remember who wrote this, but this one writer wrote that reading about others who have been through the same things as you can be very therapeutic. Now, I’m not talking about going to go out and get a bunch of books on rape and incest, but I think I know what she means. It’s worse to hide your head. It’s better to air out the ugly truth in the full light of day than it is to keep everything bottled up and hidden. Sapphire and Lee Daniels found a way to air our dirty laundry. They found a way to open up the dialogue about something that a lot of people have gone through; that is powerful. I will definitely be going to see this film. I know that it will make me laugh, cry, and PUSH.

who is the artist playing on the trailer; I know it’s Mary, but what’s the name of the track and when/where can I pick that up?
