MOVIE TRAILER: PRECIOUS: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Friday, May 15, 2009
Lionsgate has debuted the new trailer for Lee Daniels’ ‘Precious’, originally known as ‘Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire’ earlier this week. The film, adapted from the 1996 novel about a teenage girl living in Harlem. The film premiered in January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for best drama, as well as a Special Jury Prize for supporting actress Mo’Nique.
Some of you may remember our post from earlier this year speaking about the film; now with the backing of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry the movie will open in theaters nationwide later this year.
The movie stars: newcomer Gabby Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey and Paula Patton.

I think they should’ve kept it as ‘Push’ even though they mentioned something about the movie ‘Push’ that came out earlier this year possibly confusing people, I don’t see how it could.

This character reminds me of a lot of girls I know, including my self, as a kid I wanted to be famous, with a hot boyfriend lol. I’m not banging my mom she was nothing like Precious’s mamma, but my mom was a bit negative, she the reason why i didn’t even attempt to apply for Baltimore School of the Arts, when i was younger she told me I wouldn’t get in, we have to be careful of what we tell our kids, sometimes we don’t realize we put them down.

This looks so good, Mo’nique is really stepping out the box playing a character like this. The trailer bought me to tears, so I already know how it’s going to be in theaters. I thought that was Mariah Carey, but I wasn’t sure she looks really different, and I guess the last time I saw her in a film was that flop Glitter. Good to see her in real role.

I have read this book twice since it came out in 97 and I love it. Very excited about the movie although I still dont think that Paula Patton should play Blu Rain who was the one dark skinned person that made Precious love her skin color. But whatever…it will still be an amazing movie.

I remember the post from earlier in the year here when it was posted and wished even then that this movie would viewed in the regular theaters. Now, it will we just need an official release date! This movie is really going to open so many peoples eyes to what is going on around them and especially parents will see what us young people go through and how they treat us and what they say to us affects us more than anything. Hopefully this movie will have a very powerful effect on people in a positive way and by the looks of it,it already has just by the trailer alone. This trailer alone brought me to tears. This is a must see movie , Can’t wait to see this gem of a film and this is an REAL Oscar worthy film, no doubt.

I read the book…. EXCELLENT!!!! Mo’nique play the description of the mother perfectly. Her mom was a real B****, and nasty ass hell. I know it took Mo’nique a lot to get thru this role, especially if she read the book first. This is a very gripping story, and I hope the movie does the book justice. I def agree that putting this out will introduce the world to all the inside drama and abuse that some kids suffer from.
Big ups to Oprah and Tyler Perry for backing this project. it needs to be in view for all to learn from.

Wow, that’s all I can say. I have seen the previews for this movie twice and everytime I start to tear up. It looks really good and even though I don’t think that I can stomach the realness of this girl’s life, I know that I have to go and support. So that more little black girls can great roles like the one of Precious. Unfortunately though I doubt that any of them will win an Oscar. I think that the Academy is getting more open minded but they’re not quite there yet.

I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THIS COMES OUT!!!! I’ve been jonesing for it since it hit the Sundance Festival. It looks so good; the preview had me tearing up!! #14-I think that unfair that would jeopardize the story line by putting a light skinned actress in that part. Tichina Arnold or Gabrielle Union would have been good choices as well. Anywho so need a release date!!

@Mickey, I agree with you. This is not the Ms. Rain I envisioned. If I recall correctly, she had locks…I’m not at all surprised that the novel had to go through so many changes in order get the academy’s attention. I appreciate Sapphire’s piece for what it is, but I think it’s time that we, people of color, be portrayed in a better light.

Mariah and Monique: we are so PROUD of you. Black women continue to push On. The movie looks Incredible. They say these lyrics go to the theme song of the movie. Incredible. Lord bless them
I WISH YOU WELL (lyrics by Mariah Carey)
This goes out to you and you and you
You know who you are
Hmm hmm hmm
When glory days turn to stormy nights
You must have been so petrified
Didn’t you, didn’t you feel so cold
You against the world in a losing fight
Captive of your demons inside
So you sought an enemy
(I’m not your enemy. He lives in you, you know it’s true)
Like times before to mock ignorantly
(But the Lord said love, love your enemy so just…)
Take heed to the Word it’s time
Check Proverbs 19:29
Don’t cry
I wish you well
I wish you well
I wish you well
I truly wanted solidarity
Still wearing my blinders back then
(So much I didn’t see)
I weep for what I dreamed we all could be
I’ll keep you in prayer till the end
Still bruised, still walk on eggshells
Same frightened child, hide to protect myself
(Can’t believe I still need to protect myself from you)
But you can’t manipulate me like before
Examine first John chapter 4 verse 4
And
I wish you well
I wish you well
I wish you well
Be strong in the Lord and power of His might
If my shows of gratitude are miniscule
Inside your mind, sorry
(I’m so sorry, please forgive me)
There’s only so much I can do I love you and did all that I could
Maybe when you’re cursing me
You don’t feel so incomplete
But we’ve all made mistakes
Felt the guilt and self-hate
I know you’ve been there for me plenty
Maybe still got love for me
But let him without sin cast the first stone brethren
But who remains standing then
Not you not I see Phillipians 4:9
(Put it into practice and the God of Peace will be with you)
So
I wish you well
I wish you well
I wish you well
(He who the Son sets free is free indeed)
No weapon formed against me shall prosper
Surely God is my salvation
I will trust and not be afraid
The Lord, the Lord is my salvation
I will trust in Him
Yes, I know that I know that I know that I know
But I have had God’s help to this very day
And so I stand here and testify
To small and great alike
So the more you curse me
The more you’re blessing me
The Word said it
Love your enemies
Do good to those who curse you
Pray for those who mistreat you
Psalms 129:2
They have greatly oppressed me from my youth
But they have not gained victory over me
(In Jesus’ name)
I wish you well
He that keeps his mind state on the Lord
He will keep them in perfect peace

i’ve read the book push and i loved it but i can see from the preview that they are not taking the movie as far as he book. I guess thats why it is based on the book. If you haven’t read the book don’t read it until after you see the movie because it touches on so much more in depth things then this movie will. It really gets down to the nitty gritty and I wish the would just give it a R rating and do the novel the justice that it deserves because it was the first book I read and one of my favorites today

How can someone treat a child like this? Her own child? IGNORANCE, anyway, I know that Mariah was good as well, Gabby Sidibé’s face expresses all the sadness the role needed, I feel so sorry for Precious in the movie already.

@ 14…here is what i posted on a previous entry
_________________________________
i can’t front…one thing is urking me….
Paula Pattons character was initially described in the book as a brown skinned woman with locks….sorry to take it there but the issue of color kind of bothers me….this character was one of the few people who really loved Precious….and now all of the characters who ‘help’ or love her (social worker, hospital nurse) are portrayed by fairer skinned folk…..and those who perpetrate pain and hate on her (her mom, step dad & neighborhood kids) are dark in complexion….
i just don’t like the sub-concious message this sends….

@ ROCCO
i agree….this was whitewashed on some level….why NOT have a beautiful brown skin woman tell Precious she is beautiful..its not only more meaningful, it speaks to the truth in the book!
I am really dissapointed that they went in that direction…especially since being dark skinned created such a disallusionment in Precious (very much like Pecola Breedlove in The Bluest Eye) she believed she was ugly because of her color…how much more POWERFUL would it have been if the person who helped herself was also dark in color. It’s just SO rare to see a strong black woman reflected in films as it is but Lee Daniels absolutely had the power to change the same old same old but instead stayed in the same old same old.

@ #64…They could have easily gotten Vanessa Williams (not the singer…the one with the locks) to play the part of Ms. Rain. But, I guess you gotta work from the inside out…I’m just glad that I get a chance to see it on the big screen. Monique seems to have done an awesome job. The director said that Gabby pulled so much into it that they never imagined her character being as deep and realistic as she made her. The Academy better not act brand new next year
@ #42…there is so much that the trailer doesn’t show..if you read the book you will see that. I know because the movie doesnt have a R rating that they will leave a lot out so I definitely suggest reading it. It will be hard to get through especially since Sapphire wrote it the way that Precious speaks. But it is well worth it

Sapphire hit many points in the book which I hope the movie will live up to, she demonstrated a struggle of a young black illiterate woman, who dreamt and invisioned a better life ofr herself which she PUSHed to obtain, this book is what young people of all races are struggle from, it hits home.

IN LOOKING AT THE CHARACTERS PORTRAYED AS THE CAREGIVERS IN THE FILIM I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOUR PROFOUND WILLIE LYNCH-LIKE OBSERVATION. IT’S A CONSTANT DAILY BATTLE THAT WE AS THE DARKER SKINNED PPL FACE ON A REGULAR BASIS. WE AS A CULTURE HAVE THIS THEORY THAT ALL GOOD COMES FROM FAIRER SKIN…..LIGHTER EYES ETC. THE BOOK DID CLEARLY DESCRIBE THE CHARACTER MS. RAIN AS A DREDLOCKED FEMALE WITH BEAUTIFUL BROWN SKIN. DREDLOCKS ARE CURRENTLY WORN TO THIS VERY DAY…..SO I CAN’T SAY THEY WERE TRYING TO UPDATE OR MODERNIZE THE STORYLINE. SO WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR THIS CASTING FAU PAUX……THERES A BEAUTIFUL DARKSKINNED ACTRESS WHO I FEEL WOULD HAVE DONE THE ROLE OF MS. RAIN REAL JUSTICE……HER NAME ESCAPES ME, HOWEVER, SHE’S PLAYED IN ” WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT ” AND NEW JACK CITY. I BELIEVE HER SURNAME IS STICKNEY.

Damg! when I saw the preview all I could do is cry. This movie is so necessary and way overdue. It will open people eyes to abuse as well as help kids understand sometimes why they are abused. 9 times out of 10 its because they were abused and didn’t break the cycle.

This movie is going to be hard to watch. If you haven’t read the book, the book is bananas. The sad thing is this really could be going on in someone’s life.

this book made me so made many years ago. I cannot wait to see the movie. I have tears in my eyes from the trailer. this kind of thing? is happening all over the ghetto and every other place where morals are lost and demons rule the people’s minds. Claireece “Precious” Jackson, my God!!! she is real, she is in the ‘hood, she is in appalachia, she is in beverly hills, my God!!!
i look forward to this film and i pray that it starts a serious movement on exposing doggish pedophiles and mothers start taking a look at the men in their households, and when your daughter or son tells you that man is messing with them? YOU LISTEN, GET YOUR BEHIND UP, GET THE POLICE AND DISCONNECT YOUR HEART FROM THIS DAWGISH MAN!!!
and don’t be a dawgish female.
this story is BRUTAL.

When I saw the trailer I cried. It brought up so many bad memories and emotions for me because I was abused for my uncle. For years I wouldn’t read books or watch films that had scenes with incest or rape in them, but when I saw the trailer I knew I had to get the book. I read it in one sitting. It was extremely hard for me. I still have emotional scars from what happened to me, but I think I’m better off having read it. My mom told my grandmother what my uncle was doing and my grandmother said that I was lying. My mother didn’t call the police or get me treatment for what happened to me, and my uncle went on to molest lots of other girls in my family incluing my little sister. Thankfully she is too young to remember any of that. I grew up and I never let what happen define me. Even through crippling depression and self-hatred I kept going. I went to University and was the first person on my mom’s side of the family to go. I identified so much with Precious that it’s not even funny.
I feel that I am a stronger individual for having been able to face my own pain and read the book, and I will definitely see the film.
I don’t remember who wrote this, but this one writer wrote that reading about others who have been through the same things as you can be very therapeutic. Now, I’m not talking about going to go out and get a bunch of books on rape and incest, but I think I know what she means. It’s worse to hide your head. It’s better to air out the ugly truth in the full light of day than it is to keep everything bottled up and hidden. Sapphire and Lee Daniels found a way to air our dirty laundry. They found a way to open up the dialogue about something that a lot of people have gone through; that is powerful. I will definitely be going to see this film. I know that it will make me laugh, cry, and PUSH.

who is the artist playing on the trailer; I know it’s Mary, but what’s the name of the track and when/where can I pick that up?
