PROMO: THE PRINCESS & THE FROG TEASER POSTER

Above is the teaser poster for the new Disney cartoon, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG. This movie marks the debut of the first African American Princess (Princess Tiana). The movie is due out around Christmas time.

Set in one of the greatest musical cities of them all, New Orleans, the film teams Ron Clements and John Musker, creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, with Oscar winning composer, Randy Newman. Voice talent includes Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Jenifer Lewis, John Goodman, Jim Cummings, Terrence Howard and Oprah Winfrey.

I remember growing up watching Disney movies and always wishing they had a black princess. Finally! I used to be obsessed with the Little Mermaid and really wanted red hair. Long story..

  4. Lean

I’m going to go see this movie OPENING DAY! No matter! what! I can not wait! ….also I LOVE little mermaid and Aladdin! So I’m sure this movie will be great…Disney never disappoints!

  5. sowhat_12345678

Apparently the prince is of Brazilian decent….(something to think about…)

  6. Danielle [what the fruitsnacks!?]

Psssh. If you watch the trailer, there’s racist undertones. Especially with the lightening bug character. Disney thinks they’re slick. This isn’t a step forward, but a step waaaay back. Ridiculous.

  7. Really?

Granted there is going to be some negative feedback because the Prince isn’t Black. But I think it’s way more important that Black girls and women see that we can/are respected, desired and love by ALL men regardless of race and that we don’t have to settle. Also, it’s time that other races see that too.

  8. prissy since1908

I’m gonna have 2 agree with u Angel I was obsessed with the little mermaid as well! Almost eveything I had was related 2 arielle, blankets, bags, clothes u name it! And its stil 1 of my favorite movies till this day :)

  9. bambino

deffo gna c this it took too long. we get spring 2010 in the u.k so the waits even longer for me

  10. JUDAH

Disney has always been reknowned as a company that espoused racism, pedophilia, and witchcraft in their movies and I wouldn’t expect this film to be any different. I saw the trailer for this film as well and it is obvious that it will continue mainstream America’s overt attempt to endear itself to the black woman in order to indirectly destroy the black male, as well as encouraging spell-casting and the buffoonery of black people. I also saw a subliminal mockery of the government sponsored destruction of New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina.

  11. Cold as Fire Baby Hott as Ice

Angel should have posted up the trailer its on youtube.
I love Disney films so I’ll be seeing it.

@6 and 10- I think you guys are reading way too much into this!

  12. Times are Changing

I agree with number 7 and the message Disney is sending, love is love no matter what race and African American women are just as deserving of love from all races of men as white women and Latinas are, this is 2009 and our president is bi-racial times have and are changing.
And I like the firefly You can go New Orleans or anywhere, and see many old men who look and sound like that character, hell my uncle looks and sounds like that ain’t nothin racist about it, it’s a cartoon character for kids he has to be comical looking.

  13. dree

I actually saw the trailer and it looks pretty good, I don’t know why people are talkin racism, though none of disney’s movies are accurate the characters are reminisint to people in 1920′s in New Orleans, the accents, the costumes, and even the firefly, there were black people with no teeth back then too, lol. Black people get over it, the whole world in not against you, only if you want them to be.

As a animation student i’ve got to say the classic 2d is excellent work

  14. Natasha

Omg I cant wait to see this! Will it be out in theatres or is this going straight to dvd?

  15. cali panamami [check the eBayness...]

    finally, right?!
yeah angel, i used to know the little mermaid verbatim. so you are NOT alone.

but yeah i’m excited to see the film. gonna take my goddaughter.

[negative comments start below this comment.]

  16. J.DASH

OMFG…i am beyond excited for this.
BTW…the movie will have previews in NYC & LA on november 25

  17. PYT

Lol Angel me too I put red Koolaid in it one day my mom was HOT!!! I can’t wait to see it that’s a good look Disney finally.

  18. JUDAH

    Lmao @ Really?

See that? There it goes. That poor self-image that the black woman has, and the need to be considered atractive by the master rears it’s ugly head again. That’s the point of these movies, and mainstream media in general, to imbed in the minds of the people what they should want to be and how they should want to look.

  19. LULU

I can’t see the image but I’m so excited for this movie.

  20. Get Over your self

    LMAO @Judah!!!

You are the main one to talk. Your always talking about how messed up (I dont want to curse) how black women are, how dumb we are, how crazy we are, how ugly we are, how devious we are and how black men would be better off without us. So frankly, this movie for you should be a dream come true. Tell me Im wrong?

  21. ugly

You guys do realize she’ll be in frog mode for the majority of the movie right? so this race issue is kind of nonexistent then. She will only be her normal self for the first like 5 minutes of the movie then *poof* frog. Why can’t she be human throughout the rest of the movie disney? oh well it’s a start i guess…

  22. I have to take my daughter to see this movie.

  23. I have been following the developments of this movie for awhile now and overall im happy with Disney…my only, biggest concern is how SADDENED I was that they did not depict the prince as a Black man…do they realize the type of impact this has on little Black girls?

I don’t care about the whole “Disney is sending the message that love is colorblind”–That’s great. Not hating on that–but thats NOT the point. If you’re going to finally, after DECADES of not having a BLACK princess, make a story about one then MAKE THE PRINCE BLACK TOO! Let’s at least try to keep it consistent…

  24. Lo

Finally! This makes me so happy! I can’t wait, good choices for the voices as well!!

  25. Mr. Kane

What the HELL? @ some of y’all complaining about the Prince not being black.

    SO WHAT!

Just because she’s black, the Prince has to be black too?

Shut the hell up with that HORRIBLE logic.

I guess some of y’all DO NOT UNDERSTAND that love comes in ALL types of forms.

And if you base your self image off of Disney cartoons, media in general,

    You don’t even deserve life.

You’re a follower and you are not even living life for yourself.

  26. S. Dot ANN

WELL IT’S ABOUT TIME DISNEY! I cannot wait.

  27. SEXY LOTUS

ok, I agree w/ u Angel; I always wanted Disney to create a movie that was african american friendly; but y is it now that they have a princess for us, She is a FROG???? damn! Is that how Disney depicts our race? I mean really, first it was lion King ( I didnt mind that one).. now we have been reduced to Frogs,,,, SMDH in disgust!

  28. mamakilya

I’m with 25.. that’s all nice that we can pretend to be in fantasyland but it’s just like Halle Berry in “Losing Isaiah”.. she makes a damned good point when she tells the woman she doesn’t want her kid reading about purple people and green people.. She wants her kid to read about real people that LOOK LIKE HIM. Little black girls have all the time in the world to learn about other races. Why Disney just couldn’t stick to the script and have a BLACK MAN is just unbeknownst to me. You never seen any of the other princesses datin outside their race (then again.. they were based in other countries) Regardless, most Black girls dream of being with a BLACK MAN.. and I believe Ebony Magazine put that in writing. I’m so peeved with Disney about that and i’m sure that there will be other things that will tick me off in the film too.. But overall, I’m so FRICKIN GLAD the black princess is FINALLY HERE.

I’m also usually totally against Judah and his extreme views, but this time.. he’s actually pretty on point. I’m saying this as a Black woman that HAS WORKED FOR DISNEY in the Entertainment department as a performer. I loved what I did, but when it comes to that company.. I actually think they have a bit of a stigma against blacks… maaaybe not all the other cultures..but DEFINITELY Blacks.

I don’t know about that company.. there’s a lot of “interesting” (gay, drugged out -cuz they don’t require drug testing and probably perverted) folks who work there to say the least. just do a search for disney subliminal messages and you’ll find lots of em.

    se la vie.

  29. sowhat_12345678

One thing, why should Disney educate black people about loving ourselves? What would they know about black love? And why would they care?

As a matter of fact, what do black folks know about black love?

We can’t necessarily materialize something that’s increasingly becoming an afterthought for so many of our people.

  30. sowhat_12345678

    @ 30

By the way, its “C’est la vie”

French people are really anal when it comes to their language!

    Its just constructive criticism…no hate!

  31. JUDAH

    @Mamakilya

There’s nothing “extreme” about my views. I just get right to the point. Either you can comprehend reality or you cannot. It usually goes hand in hand with a comprehension of order.

    @So What

I hear this jargon from many black women about “black love”. What is your definition for that?

  32. Really?

    @20 Judah

The problem I have with some black men and I am assuming you are one. Is that I don’t need you or any man (regardless) of race to define who I am. Because if I had to wait for a black man to encourage or appreciate me…well I will probably be waiting forever. That is not an insult it fairly factual.

And Lord knows if this were the other way around and a Black Prince fall in love with a non-black woman I doubt we were hear the majority of “black men” expressing their displeasure. They would take it as a compliment and move on.

  33. BJB

Come on people, Disney (like anyone) can not escape its’ past (go here~ http://www.cracked.com/ar...st-disney-characters.html) or cracked. com- most racist disney charaters; I don’t believe they’ll be able to produce anything with minorities WITHOUT racist undertones.

  34. BlueDiva

You know, I agree with #31…if we are letting Disney movies raise our children then we have some serious problems!!

I mean I’m sure Angel didn’t run away and explore the world when she turned 16 because Ariel did it!!!

I absolutely love Disney movies and I’m not going to stop loving them because they designed a fly with no teeth or made a Black princess kiss a frog! I am very secure with who I am as a Black Woman and no movie is going to change that…guess who I learned that from..MY MOTHER!!!

  35. Misha

I imagine some other people will be pissed the princess is black, y’all mad the prince isn’t black…oy vey. It’s all so tiring lol.

Anyways, here’s a link to the trailer is anyone is interested:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6DmEgtibOg

  36. Jenny

Isn’t it a good thing that the prince isn’t black? It shows that love isn’t limited. You can love anybody. I don’t see it as a problem at all. Do you think kids are that tight up on race, like adults are? And for God’s sakes, it’s not like Disney would blatantly tell us that the princess is black, etc.

Remember Pocahontas? I know I may be the only one here, but I thought the point of that film was that people can love anybody, regardless of race and cultural differences. Why is it any different here? Because the princess happens to be black?

No matter. I’ll watch this, anyways.

  37. GreenEyedGirl

Disney’s First Black Princes in 2009.
That shows you how much Disney thinks of Black people after how many years and how many films?

  38. GreenEyedGirl

Read a little more between the lines and you will understand where Juduh is coming from on this one. I know his views are strongly disliked on here but he is thinking on a more conscious level.

While I won’t go into everything I think about this kind of film coming from Disney, I will say it is all too easy to acknowledge how great it is to see a black female in the lead and a non-black male as the love interest and how easy it has become for mainstream America to gut the black man at every chance it gets. I know it is just a movie but mainstream cinema has influence to a large degree what people think and feel about the black man…and to take it a little further, to a large degree of how it views the black female and her ability to sustain her black family unit. I am sad to say that while we want to reduce it to something as simple as love is love, my question is, why not put a black man in that role and make him clearly defined as a strong black man that wins the heart of the woman through honor and strength. I wonder how many drawings it took to come up with this character and why the decision was made to not pair her with someone in her own likeness. Why is that not a good image for young African-American girls to see. Love between a black man and a black woman.

Disney is clearly trying to slide one again and if you cannot understand that then Disney has succeeded again.

If you cannot see the implications of films like this then I think you might want to look at some of the previous Disney films.

  39. MxdcksRock!

BLACK PEOPLE (ESPECIALLY BLACK WOMEN) ARE SO ANNOYING!!! DISNEY SHOULD JUST MAKE THE PRINCESS WHITE SO YOU PEOPLE WOULD SHUT THE HECK UP!!! THE PRINCE SHOULD BE BLACK…BLAH, BLAH, BLAH! WHO CARES! LITTLE BLACK GIRLS NEED A STRONG BLACK COUPLE? HMMM..MAYBE BECUZ THEY DON’T SEE THAT IN THEIR OWN HOME OR IN SOCIETY? I GUESS LITTLE BLACK GIRLS HAVE NO OTHER MODELS OF “BLACK LOVE” EXCEPT IN ANIMATED FILMS! PLEASE…IM GLAD THE PRINCE ISN’T BLACK!! IM GLAD THEIR RELATIONSHIP WILL BE COLORBLIND! THAT’S THE WAY IT SHOULD BE! SHOW YOUNG BLACK GIRLS HOW TO LOVE WITHOUT FOCUSING ON SKIN COLOR! SHOUT…MAYBE YOU WON’T HAVE SO MANY CLOSED-MINDED SINGLE BLACK WOMEN COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW THEY CAN’T FIND A GOOD MAN…I CAN’T WAIT TIL DISNEY HAS A BLACK PRINCE WITH A NON-BLACK PRINCESS! ANYWAY…. I can’t wait to see this movie! Yay!

  40. V

Im sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited! and yes I loove (d) me some Ariel!

  41. theComplex

I got peek at this last year while doing a conference with Disney in L.A. Im sooooooo excited!

  42. Michelle

    @MXDCKSROCK

You’re really immature typing in all caps so that someone will say something to you. welp, you got your wish!

Don’t generalize us. I am a black young lady and while ALL movies have it’s flaws, this movie movie looks cute. And I don’t have a problem with the (sexy) Brazilian prince.

But if there IS undertones of racism. Oh well, people are people right?

I think that us brown folk, (we’re all shades of BROWN! not black. O_o) tend to harp on stuff that may seem really important… but they just slow us down. If we want to go forward, we got to stop letting stuff like this get us upset and just.. shrug it off. Shrug it off and prove them wrong. :) Don’t forget what Dr. King and all those before and after him did for us.

  43. GreenEyedGirl

    GOOD POINT MICHELLE
To add to what you are saying, I find it amazing that people come on this site and insult black women. That is very immature.
People are entitled to their opinion about the movie and many people will go see it regardless of the subject matter. No need to generalize people (as you said @MXDCKSROCK especially black women).

  44. Kellz

All I have to say is MOFOS NEED TO LET SHIT GO. This is the main problem with “black” ppl… STILL HOLDING ON TO THE F*ING PAST. Don’t you know that ignorant ass way of logic spreads throughout the universe ERGO you allow others to hold on to the past as well. Also I agree w/ the ppl who think if you let Disney movies raise your child instead of YOU, then you don’t deserve f*ing kids. If you don’t like the morals/messages a movie highlights, teach your child the damn opposite and MOVE ON. Not everyone believes in the same sh*t as you so don’t speak on the behave of EVERYONE else. Personally, I’m happy the prince isn’t black. “Black” ppl constantly talking about black women needing to stay within their ETHNICITY (there’s only one “race” you f*ing morons… HUMAN; stop identifying w/ your oppressor genius) while the black man is congratulated for the opposite. That’s BULL! If it wasn’t for my mom ignoring ethnicity, I wouldn’t be here and have such the diverse family and diverse look on life. I’m proud to be multi-ethnic and I wish more ppl were instead of being forced to choose one ethnicity to identify w/. Ignorant social norms like blacks staying w/ other blacks is one of the main reasons things are still f*ed up. How the hell you expect other ethnicities to respect and love you when you segregate your f*ing self? Yea, that’s real damn smart and a wonder message to send your children when you bitch about how the prince isn’t black. GET OVER IT.

  45. Kellz

Oh and I don’t mean all black ppl, I meant black ppl to which my rant related to. I know some black ppl don’t feel, think, or act like what was mentioned in my prior comment so that comment went out to the ones that do.
