Singer Ashanti attended a press conference promoting the upcoming Summer production of ‘The Wiz’, in NYC on Monday morning. Ashanti will be starring in the play and gave a sneak peak performance of the song, “Home” for the press that attended.

Ashanti looks Fab…absolutely beautiful!!! Amazing how she’s still on the scene, record sales or not! I was shocked to see she’ll be doing the Wiz…but, one thing with live theater, you can’t fake it…New Yorkers aren’t an easy crowd to get over on either…so, my bet is with producers putting up some serious cash and there being other choices, the girl can do it…I didn’t think Michelle Williams and Fantasia could really pull off the color purple on Broadway in Chicago and New York, after its initial success…with Oprah’s approval…but, they both received good reviews…sometimes, we don’t hear an artist’s full range or ability because of the sound they may have started off with, production, A&R, etc…I applaud Ashanti for sticking it out, staying on her grind, making things happen, instead of being a joke on VH1′s “Where are they now, hip hop divas and vixens?”…The flipside is that Broadway need to expand its market share of consumer entertainment dollars during this tough economy and bring in new theater goers, using actors with an already established fanbase and is a strong brand…just like how we bailed out the film industry in the 70s with blaxploitation films. Ashanti obviously has done some things right ! Those movie roles were quite beneficial and her publicity and management team has done a great job in sustaining her career without charting or selling well… Then the girl is just good lookin…the color palette is really working for her…the pretty sexy girl next door becomes her and is disarming…she gives her own meaning to “quitters never win and I’m not a quitter!”

Ashanti seems kinda old to play Dorothy, imo. Plus, I’m not a fan of her voice. I would have liked to see one of the actress/singers get a chance at this, since Ashanti can’t act.She does look decent here, though.
