I like Amerie! :D I like the video, but I don’t like the song. This should not have been her first single. :(

eh, the song didn’t do it for me. she’s so pretty, but that’s just not enough. video steals an awful lot from the video for 1Thing in feel/shots too, like they’re trying for lightning to strike twice. It’s amazing that someone keeps pouring the money into this girl’s music year after year. She seems really down to earth and smart, but it might be time to rethink the career.

Reading most of the comments on this page is sad. It seems like no one is interested in artistry anymore. Rather they are interested in hits. I love this song and I’m glad Amerie isn’t selling out by getting every producer under the “hot” sun at the moment, and that she is sticking to her signature sound.I think she’s should be aplauded for having a signature sound and taking the time to build her own style and sound.

Love the song and the video is okay.

When Amerie first came on the scene, I was NOT fan at all. It was not until later listening to her albums that I realized there was some talent. Obviously, her range is limited. She is not Whitney, Mariah, etc etc… However, her “sound” is good and not like the competitors.

I like the fact her music doesn’t sound synthetic. You get what you get with her voice. If you don’t like it…move on. I think the music is quality and her voice has appeared to mature over the years.

All in all….good vibe. It won’t be song of the year but it’ll probably be a song I can listen too in two years and it still have a good sound.

she needs to do rock music. I can hear it in her voice the raspyness. Maybe mellow rock and work her way up. She don’t have 2 sell her soul but just study it, you never kno she may end liking it. yall been brainwashed to think all black artists are obliged to do rnb. please get rid of that mentality and i hope she does the same. her voice dont work for rnb.

Yo Heemi thank you,
THE HATERS R up in the house tonight. If this was a Beyonce video the Hater would be giving shout out’s all day long. Since it’s Amerie it’s this it’s that whatever. The video is off the chain that’s all that need to be said. It’s way better than EGO which looks like all Beyonce videos off that SASHA BULL CRAP CD. EGO looks like cheap water down version of SINGLE LADIES with that same one piece bathing suit enough said. It’s about time someone stepped out with some style and originality.

It’s all good because Amerie got the HATER talking!

@91 I caught on to the same thing along time ago. I remember someone else pointed that out months ago and I co signed on it. Trust me, you aren’t the only person who’s noticed this.

@151 Ain’t that the truth. I was just about to say that. People are too caught into hearing the “catchiness” or if a song is a “hit”. That’s why there’s so much garage music out, too much focus on catchy and not enough on quality. Don’t complain about the state of the music industry if you keep comparing every new song to the sound that’s already out there and want it to sound the same way. That’s defeating the purpose of wanting to hear originality. I was guilty of it myself, but I know better now.

Also for the people who genuinely don’t like the song. The single choice is not Amerie’s fault. I read an article Billboard.com last week that L.A. Reid was going to drop her because of “creative differences”. In other words he wanted her to comply to the his artistic vision and not hers, so she finally gave in to keep her record deal. So blame him not her. I actually like the song though btw. This same situation happened with Janet’s album. Everybody like her song “Luv” and thought it would be a good single, but L.A. Reid wanted “Rock Wit U” to be the single. He got what he wanted but you see what happened with that. I also remember last year a lot people wanted Mariah to release Migrate as the 2nd single, but that did not happen. I think a lot of us including myself think artists have a lot of control over their work, but actually they don’t especially if they’re on a major label. The head record exec based on these examples obviously gets the final say. I was wondering why Janet left Def Jam all of sudden but I see why now, she should have just formed her own label a long time ago like Prince, Jill, and Akon. That way she can do what she wants.

I like Amerie’s drive and “why don’t we fall in love” is still one of my favorite songs. She’s beautiful, intelligent and clearly passionate about what she does, but her voice leaves A LOT to be desired. If I watched that video with my eyes closed and had no idea how the singer looked, I wouldn’t even take that song seriously. That’s real talk. I criticize Beyonce and her antics on a regular basis, but the one thing I never challenge that child on is whether she can sing, cause she can. And she jacked Amerie’s style two albums ago and unfortunately, did a better job at it. Once again, that’s just real talk.

175.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 /

@165
I kind of agree. I don’t think rnb is for her either. As for rock idk about that. Maybe jazz or something. She has a natural sound but its not for rnb.

And people talking about hating. Oh lawd please! This girl aint done nothing to hate on. People are giving honest opinions. If she was dat good she would have more support, more recognition, more promotion. I heard she was on the brinks of getting dropped from her label. With that being said she is still here by the skin on her teeth. She was almost gonna be signed to myspace records like you-know-who. Her management can’t be serious giving that poor child this song as a first single. This song is forgettable and if she wants to sell records she better do something else. No one wants to be a loser but we can all live with respect. Right now i dont give her any respect because she came back so weak with this song. And all this talk about she didn’t wanna sell out please sometimes you gotta do what you have to do to get people’s attention. She could always go back 2 her roots after she develops a fan base that will buy her album no matter what. Like ahem….beyonce and her stans.

176.

@149
You hit the nail on the head! I’ve been saying Amerie does not have the best voice. People are praising her voice on here and it is because she not that successful. Yes we have been brainwashed to accepting no talent whether you think so or not and some people think its good music just because the artist is not successful. Shows a lot about what is going on with the music industry nowadays.

CLEARLY THE SONG AND THE VIDEO ARE BOTH FUCKING CRAZY. IT’S TOTALLY 90′S AND ONLY A 90′S PERSON WOULD KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THAT. IT’S REMINDS OF OLD MARY J. BUT WHATEVER, WE ARE IN A GENRE OF AUTOTUNES, STUTTERING, AND RAPPERS SINGING SO AMERIE IS JUST GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE A BACK SEAT WITH OTHER TALENTED PERFORMERS WHO NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF SUCCESS. ie (tierra marie) THE REST OF YOU FUCKS CAN GO ON THINKING THAT BEYONCE IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN MAKE MUSIC. AS FOR ME IM ANTICIPATING THIS AMERIE AND LETOYA’S NEW ALBUMS WHILE EVERYONE ELSE SLEEPS ON IT AND MISS OUT ON GREAT MUSIC.

I see the direction Amerie is going and thats very smart cause this is her lane. Many female artists are transitioning to all this different sound and very catchy radio friendly records but this is just old school/new school vibe all in one and thats what i like. I think this song is very well produced and the lyrics will appeal to young and older audiences but the video is just alright. Its very simple no real concept but thats exactly what she wanted Director Ray Kay to capture and i think this video will get a lot of air time on BET and other music networks. She will have to come harder with her second single though before the release of her album. Something more uptempo that can be an international hit as well as in the states.

I Love Amerie… Have bought Album #1 and then the touch album. Imma HUGE fan.. But with that being said.. I feel like this song is mediocre and nice for the album… but not lead hit single material.. This single makes me think she is not growing as an artist and is not changing up the formula to give her fans something new and exciting. I hope she comes harder on the next single… If not, I may not buy it. :(

i’m reading through the comments and i’m truly baffled. how can you praise folks like ciara and rihanna and knock amerie’s singing? she can sing circles around those two broads! amerie is a breath of fresh air to the game and i’m glad she’s staying true to her style and who she is. this song goes sooo hard and so does the video. just because it isn’t your typical “pop/r&b” record doesn’t make it any less good. i’ll be in line to pick up her album when it drops. one thing i can always count on amerie for is GOOD MUSIC.

Read this haters:

While it is often said that “all is fair in love and war,” not much is mentioned about the place where the two intersect. With her fourth album, In Love & War, superstar Amerie proves she has survived the twisted road to that inevitable collision and lived to sing about it.

Since Amerie first debuted in 2002 with the smash single “Why Don’t We Fall in Love,” she has always thrown her mind, body and soul into her songs. As a young girl, Amerie lived in a variety of places including South Korea, Germany, Texas, and Alaska because her father worked for the United States military. Having to constantly adapt to new environments, Amerie developed a very strong sense of self early on. While she always excelled in school, she also found solace in music and began expressing her self through song as a child.

“I always sang but I didn’t know I was going to be a singer until I was in high school,” she says. “My family was really big on academics; they thought I would be a lawyer or a professor. So I said okay, I’m going to be a singer, but I knew I had to go to college first because I was already on the road to academia. I wanted to finish what I started.”

After high school, Amerie was accepted to Georgetown University and graduated
with a degree in English and Fine Arts. While studying at Georgetown, she befriended a Washington D.C. club promoter who eventually put her in touch with producer Rich Harrison, the man who would lead Amerie to signing her first record deal with Sony Records.

Amerie released her debut album All I Have, and, together with Rich Harrison, she helped steer contemporary R&B away from synthetic sounds through the use of live instrumentation. Three years later, she dropped Touch, which solidified her as one of music’s most exciting artists, thanks to the overwhelming success of the go-go inspired track, “1 Thing.” In 2007, Amerie released Because I Love It which featured the hip-hop electro sound that is still prevalent in pop music today.

After releasing three critically acclaimed albums, Amerie decided it was time to reposition herself. In 2008 she parted ways with Sony and created her own entertainment company, Feenix Rising, with business partner Len Nicholson. They then secured a distribution deal with Island Def Jam under the tutelage of LA Reid.

“LA and I had been talking about doing something together for a long time,” says Amerie. “He was one of the first people I met with when I got into the music business. He’s really excited about the music I am making. And what I love is that he doesn’t try to make one artist sound like another artist. He’s all for creating your own lane.”

Never one to follow another’s lead, Amerie’s latest album, In Love & War, is an aggressive mix of trunk rattling hip-hop, raw soul reminiscent of James Brown, and classic Zeppelin-era rock ‘n roll. The three-time Grammy nominated singer managed to turn the tumultuous times of her past relationships into a moving collection of songs which will resonate with anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of love.

“This album is very personal, whether I’m talking about my own past situations or situations the people close to me went through,” says the striking Korean and Black singer/songwriter/producer. “I really wanted to make sure that everything I was writing wasn’t too far from myself.”

Unlike many artists who follow whatever trends have proven the most successful, Amerie mapped out the sound of In Love & War before she sat with any producers. “The process would usually be quite a few steps. Usually I’d get a raw instrumental, and from there I’d pick out parts and sounds, and then format them to create the arrangement of the song. Once I wrote and vocaled, I’d talk to the producer again about adding additional instrumentation I felt was necessary, like strings, additional keys, building the bridge, just basically formatting the record.

“For this album, I told people I needed music that was really heavy, something with knock,” says Amerie. “Nothing too pretty; I wanted something that sounded ‘70’s-ish, when rock had a lot of soul in it, and it was still so related to the blues. And of course it needed that hip-hop element.”

One producer who instantly understood what Amerie needed was Teddy Riley. Of the record, “Tell Me U Love Me”, she says, “I didn’t really have to say much to Teddy. I told him I wanted something signature ‘me’. He knew exactly what to do. It was like magic. I wrote that record freestyling in the vocal booth after hearing it for the first time. Killer.” Another “killer” moment was with Warren Campbell, who produced “Higher.” “I told Warren I wanted a live, hard, rock sound, something mean, something with swagger. I wanted the intrumentation to have a strong personality before I even opened my mouth. He started playing the bass guitar, and I was sitting there creating the lyrics and melody and it all came together really organically. That’s what I mean when I say that this album, in addition to being an extension of my first, is also an extension of ‘1 Thing’ because ‘1 Thing’ has its go-go roots but it’s also very soulful, ‘70’s rock. I went from that and took it all the way live.”

For the song “Different People” Amerie enlisted the Australian producer M-Phazes who tracked a mid-tempo backdrop for the songstress to explain how important it is to accept your partner for who they are, while on “Pretty Brown” (also produced by M-Phazes) Amerie hooks up with Trey Songz to sing about a relationship that is quickly approaching the breaking point. Amerie also linked up with the Buchanans, who have produced on all of her albums, for the riotous “More Than Love” and “Why R U,” In Love & War’s head-nodding first single.

“Why R U” is about being in a relationship and hating that you’re so attached to this person,” explains Amerie. “A lot of the songs on this album deal with wanting to be done with a relationship but you’re just not really ready to leave, so you hang around and wait for a person to change. I really wanted the lyrical content to be real conversation. I didn’t want anything to be sugar-coated.”

On the sexy, catchy ladies anthem “Heard ‘Em All”, Amerie let her long locks down over Sean Garrett and Eric Hudson’s up-tempo club track while challenging a prospective lover to bring something different to the table.
With her latest album complete and up to her own creative standards, Amerie’s In Love & War represents her ever-evolving artistry and insatiable drive to continue to carve out her own path. “I’m really big about staying true to my sound,” she says. “I just love to emote,” she laughs. “I really feel like I live through music. It’s been that way as far as I can remember. I’m always going to do what I want to do, and no one is going to tell me I can’t. That’s just me.”

I love Amerie but this song sounds like all the other tracks off her old album. Maybe she shoul work with Ryan Leslie, B.cox, Ne-yo, A.keys or even The Dream to work on a hit single. They have a gift of making non singers sound good. And its not like amerie can’t sing she has a more unique voice then Rhi rhi. Her managment team just needs to get her a hot producer

Amerie is absolutely beautiful..the video is fantastic, .the song is ok…it has some very good moments…she’s more fierce than ever before in her presentation, still with so much more behind the exterior we don’t see…with heavy rotation and Def Jam behind her Amerie will do just fine…unfortunately, this business is about looks and sex appeal first and music second…artists spend more time on trying to figure out what’s going to sell and get a hit rather than the music itself…it’s not their fault…it’s the industry’s demands…personally, I think what’s missing from Amerie’s music is more CONFIDENCE…I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she doesn’t really realize how beautiful and talented she really is, especially, being multi-raciial…as a Georgetown University Grad, we know she’s smart as well as pretty and winning an Ascap award for 1 Thing says she’s a good songwriter…so much has happened for her…but, she still has the same job we all have and that’s discovering our true self-worth—value. All the money and accolades in the world won’t give it to you…because any” thing” can be taken away, so things or positions can’t be who you are or what you’re actually worth…you are worthy simply because you were born! God only made greatness…look at the beauty of animals from the wild, a rain forest, a water fall, a sunset or moon…Maybe she does know just how fab she is and hold back because of haters or self-doubt, unconsciously so…confidence, beauty and talent with humility and a sense of fair play (integrity) makes anyone exceptional, it’s the way God intended us to be…good grooming, personal style, good manners, graciousness, kindness, a sense of humor and wit will make anyone beautiful from the inside out and very appealing regardless of how the outer stack up…this is why people are so fake…they know people like nice, humble and capable or talented people…Amerie was just given it all…but, she has to realize it’s ok to believe (if she doesn’t) that’s she’s exceptionally beautiful, caring and compelling and God gave her this beauty and a platform (Singing, writing and acting) to atrract and reach out to others! We love beautiful things!

Go Amerie!!!…you’re awesome and someone quite unique and different and not just your awesome looks!

Number 188 Fallback damn I.m loving what you said about Amerie. This girl is so smart and intelligent own her own buisness, write, her own music and even arrange it wow how many female artist due this? The album is going to HHHoooooooot I heard a few othe cuts off it like Tell Me U Luve Me and Love Off The Chain. I love the video it’s so diffrent than anything out at the moment and home girl is stunning as always.

I find it shocking home Beyonce can make all her video’s off this Sasha album all look the same an her fans love it. Ego she is dancing in a circle like she did in Single Ladies. Where is the originality in that.

ERM, I DIDNT LIKE IT AT FIRST,
BUT AFTER 500 LISTENS ITS STARTIN TO GROW ON ME.
I MEAN IT AINT THE SORT OF SONG YOU LISTEN TO AND STRAIGHT AWAY YOU KNOW ITS A HIT.. ITS GONNA TAKE TIME.
I DONT THINK THIS WILL BE THE SONG THAT PUTS AMERIE BACK ON THE MAP, I THINK ITS JUS LIKE A STREET SINGLE, MAYBE AN INTRODUCTION TO HER ALBUM… I PRAY TO THE LORD O’ MIGHTY THAT THERE IS BETTER MATERIAL AND THAT SHE COLLABORATES WITH SOME OTHER ARTISTS, BECAUSE SHE SOOOO NEEDS THIS, FOR HER TO MANTAIN HER RECORD DEAL AND HAVE LONGETIVITY IN HER MUSIC CAREER..
IT WOULD HELP IF SHE SWITCHED UP HER STYLE A LIL, BECAUSE I SEE NO PROGRESSION THERE. SHE IS STILL DRESSIN LIKE SHE DID IN 05′ AND THAT IS NOT GOOD! IT GIVES THE IMPRESSION TO PEOPLE THAT SHE IS STUCK IN HER WAYS AND NOT VERSATILE AND AGAIN THAT IS A VERY IMPORTANT FOR A LONG HEALTHY MUSIC CAREER…
MAYBE SHE WOULD BE A BETTER MODEL, OR BETTER YET MAYBE SHE SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT UNIVERSITY AND GRADUATED…
THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS NOT FOR HER…
SHE ENTERTAINED US WITH ‘ON THING’ NOW ITS TIME FOR HER TO P1SS OFF!

I LOVE Amerie. Really I do. She’s sexy. She’s CLASSY! She’s beautiful. She’s intelligent. And I wanna see her succeed. I really do. But Amerie, sweetheart. This song is BORING. I dunno why they let her release this as her first single. Smh. She needs something more upbeat or something more dramatic if she wants to do a ballad. Blah. She needs new management? But didn’t she just get no management? I dunno. She’s still gorgeous though. I still have faith in her. Maybe she’ll bring it on the second single…. If LA Reid lets her have another single.

The reason why this site is going crazy over this Amerie post is
1. We have nothing else to go crazy about since Concreteloop doesn’t post stories that frequently anymore

&

2. Amerie has what it take to succeed and do well in the music industry. But for some reason, she keeps falling short. We want to like her new material, but the new material isn’t that likeable.

Maybe the second single will be better. Fingers crossed.

i love how amerie stans are so obsessed with beyonce.

they hating on her ‘ego’ video but that video got cassidy and trey songz and other folks trying to make remixes to it.

when has anyone ever tried to remix an amerie song or video.

beyonce had the president and first lady talking about her SL video.

the difference between amerie and beyonce is that bey DOES NOT have to have a hot video to have successful. she sells off her name alone.

and amerie isn’t even on ciara level yet(pathetic) so dont even think about mentioning her in the same sentence as queen bey who is #1 and has been for years.

“when has anyone ever tried to remix an amerie song or video.”

UM, 1 thing was remixed 21393820958325 times!

“the difference between amerie and beyonce is that bey DOES NOT have to have a hot video to have successful. she sells off her name alone.”

that’s the sad part, beyonce doesn’t have to put EFFORT in her shit anymore that’s why all her videos look the same. amerie puts HELLLLLLLA effort into her music, amerie is an underdog and she’s going to bring it this summer. WATCH!

“and amerie isn’t even on ciara level yet(pathetic) so dont even think about mentioning her in the same sentence as queen bey who is #1 and has been for years.”

LMAO! please don’t bring C-ERROR into this. she’s desperately trying to keep fantasy ride from flopping.

Beyonce can suck a dick. She is fake..unoriginal..can’t write or compose. She is a brainwashed puppet with puppet followers and she always jacking someones style. You need to read that bio and educate yourself..o wait your artist doesn’t have a degree and isn’t articulate. Go post about that drag queen somewhere else. Check album sales B is not #1 she just popular. Amerie got you mad for what? People always comparing for no reason..if she is so wack you wouldn’t be in here posting hoe.

“blackxxx. why everyone “music videos” by black artists is done by white people, now i understand why videos today so WACK! Impudent white people have raped our culture….i am sick of shit!”

i’m sorry, the whites have raped black culture? when did this happen? how do you explain hype williams, who is a prominent video director, however he is also a huge hack that rips things off from romanek and others. what about the multitude of black directors that have been successful without following the route of williams? at least this director comes across with original ideas. i’m sorry if there aren’t chicken heads and hoodrats showing their cooches and bentley’s, but what the fuck does skin color have to do with a director’s ability?

also, i would like to point out that amerie has had 4 black directors, 4 white, and 1 is female. i think that’s pretty diverse. now go take your racial slander and shove it up your ass. kudos for the use of “impudent”, however you may want to review your choice of “why everyone ‘music videos’. now go back to raping the world with your false hysteria, accusations, and poor grammar.

Is Pardon My Swag some kind of industry expert or something? Sounds more like a misguided fool to me! A few people on the internet say that they don’t like the song, so that automatically means that the majority of people don’t like it, and it’s gonna flop? How do u know who or what’s gonna sell? Things change constantly!

Amerie should not listen to people who think that selling your soul or following the crowd is gonna ultimately bring success.

Now pardon me!!

Damn, it’s like we’re on a Beyonce post up in here… LOL

So, in my opinion, the song is no “One Thing”, but it’s good. It’s not AMAZING, like fall-off-your-chair-because-you-can’t-believe-it, but it’s good. Definitely grew on me after listening to it a bit longer. The video has its cool moments, but I think they could have done more with it. Love her first outfit though.

@BestCritic I’m surprised that you thing M.I.A. is a novelty. I think she’s only a novelty to mainstream listeners who are looking for that “edgy” song to play over and over again for a year so that they can look “cool”. Eventually they’ll find some other song and forget all about her. But M.I.A. has staying power because she has a dedicated following who actually enjoy her music as a whole, and not just “Paper Planes”. Audience plays a big role in determining whether an artist remains popular or not.

That being said, I don’t think Amerie is a novelty. She’s unique, but not unique like Lady Gaga (whose success is largely based on shock factor and the rise of electropop) or M.I.A., who’s music really doesn’t sound like anyone else’s. (Don’t say Santigold because M.I.A. came before her).

I think Amerie is talented enough, and has enough fans to stay in the game. And as someone pointed out earlier, her first two albums went gold, and though her third wasn’t released in the US, people still had good things to say about it. It’s not like she lost relevance - it’s more like we didn’t get to appreciate her last album since she left Sony and they stopped promoting the album. She definitely has more than just looks going for her.

It looks like she’s sticking with the tried-and-tested formula for her new album, which is surprising because she stopped working with Rich Harrison after Touch. It may or may not work - only time will tell. I’d love to see her move in a new direction though. Don’t want every Amerie song to start sounding the same.
