The patriarch of the Jackson Family, Joe Jackson, speaks publicly for the first time since his the death of his son, Michael Jackson. The interview was very awkward and many people are saying Joe just attended the awards for media face time. He even had his assistant read this statement, ON THE RED CARPET:
“Until such time, however, we have the personal and legal authority to act, and solely Katherine and I have authority for our son and his children. We wish to handle his memory and legacy with dignity. The attorney for the Jacksons is L. Londell McMillan and no one has the authority to speak on behalf of the Jackson family at this time.”
In the press room, where he made a brief appearance, Joe Jackson was asked if Michael might have a message for his fans at this time. He responded,
“I think if Michael was here he would’ve enjoyed the celebration, but … he couldn’t be here. It’s like he was larger than he was ever before. I think Michael gives his love to everybody and we hope his record will never be broken.
As for how he would like his son to be remembered, the elder Jackson said, “Well as you know, since the tragedy has happened, I would like him to be remembered forever all over the world. We know that all over the world everybody will support him.”

As for Joe Jackson, I never liked the man, but my dad tried to put some insight into me when he attempted to explain his motives. He was just doing what was best for his kids. At a time when segregation was rampant, and where it was dangerous and damning (financially and socially) to be a black man in this country …I could see how Joe Jackson was just trying to protect his family. However I’m disturbed by the lack of a father-son relationship, and the fact that he only saw michael with $ signs in his eyes. The whole “blu ray technology” “the next big step” sh*& signaled to me that he was really just about money, how disgusting. I don’t care how old he is or if that’s his way of grieving, I am going to be ignorant and call it out like it is: he is an opportunist.
And Al Sharpton too…he is getting on my nerves. If you were such a “good friend” where the hell were you when michael was suffering through all this. He’s once again riding on the coattails of opportunities of his “friend’s” death. Like a fan, you desperately showed the only picture of Michael and you to prove this so called “friendship.” How dare he take advantage of him like this….ugh I could go on and on…

1-10, I would rate the show a 4 for trying. Tiny and Toya and that other new ghetto show coming was embarrassing to me – all they did was reinforce the stereotype. The VMA will do a better job, I suspect, but I’m not happy about it.
I skipped YEARS of the BET awards, but watched this year specifically for Michael Jackson.
I’m going to try to watch it next year to see if they’ll redeem themselves.

But what was clear is that she had a problem with JOE JACKSON, not Micheal. A lot of people do NOT like him….including me. I’m sure he loves his kids….for what they can do for him. Last, BET had a segment for the OJay’s, what happened to a segment for MJ. If they scrapped the original show for what aired on Sunday, please tell me, what were they gonna show us if MJ didn’t die? The show was whack. Period. It was not live either. They recorded the show on Friday…professional entertainers should be able to ad lib and create something show worthy in no time. They lacked creativity on this project. Yes, miss tianna, go big or go home. As far as the new ‘ghetto line up’ I’ll be tuning in. You have to learn to appreciate all of our ‘blackness’ classy or trashy…lol. No need to run away from the way we are represented. These personalities do exist in our community, Such as they exist in other non black communities. I do agree that we need uplifting shows just as we need the ghetto ones.
