♫ Whitney Houston – I Didn’t Know My Own Strength
Whitney Houston’s first single, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” hit the internet yesterday. The new track comes from her long-awaited seventh studio album, I Look At You. It was first announced in March 2007 by Clive Davis who revealed that the singer would be heading into the studio to record her first studio album in 4 years. It will be released September 1, 2009 by long-term record label Arista in assocation with J. Records.
The new single, produced by David Foster and penned by Diane Warren, tries to capture a timeless sound that Whitney should be going for. On the album, Whitney is slated to also work with hitmakers Akon, Swizz Beatz, Sean Garrett, Alicia Keys and R. Kelly.

This vocal is HORRIBLE. with all the Modern Technology why does whitney sound HOARSE and like she just left a smokey bar? ? ? She has no passion in her voice. This is really sad to me, i was rooting for her, but this vocal leaves me sad, that she can’t sing anymore.
She sounds AVERAGE, whitney has NEVER been an average singer.
Looks like Mariah is gonna continue to Claim her status as the Biggest Selling Female in History.
Whitney loses this battle. “It’s Not Right, But It’s Ok” is the last good song she recorded. SAD SAD SAD
HORRIBLE VOCALS
VERY HORRIBLE VOCALS
Perfect song for her to make it through love it glad she is back and hope she can stay clean stay done with him and happy.
One word describes this song for me – REDEMPTION!
This is a great vocal for her – seems to be auto biographical, even though Diane Warren wrote it.
I pray nothing but success for Whitney! I heart Whitney!
PLEASE READ THIS!!
For all you naysayers, THIS IS JUST A DEMO! The vocals, beat, production, EVERYTHING is not final! Stop talkin shit!
OMG!!
I LUV IT
I REALLY FEEL HER IN THIS SONG
GWARRNN WHITNEY!!
BEAUTIFUL SONG!!
To be honest, I expect more from this ‘single’. Yes, very inspirational lyrics but will this be a hit? No, I don’t think so. Of course, I am more than happy to be proven wrong!
This song is hot 1. because it’s Whitney’s comeback. 2. because it’s song about what she’s overcome in these last years. Welcome back Whitney!!
Love this song….Not sure if it’s a comeback single but it will get the job done. Sure the follow up will be a mid tempo banger. GO NIPPY!
It’s nice to hear her voice again, the song is ok it kind of sounds like an American Idol finale song. Can’t wait to hear the whole album though. Whitney in her worst voice sounds better than a lot of these so called singers in their best voice.
I like this song! Oh that girl has magic in her voice! I hear this is not the final version but a demo track. Glad that she is taking the mature route and not trying to compete with all the other so called “divas” Welcome back Whitney. You have been missed.
I LIKED IT. SHE BEEN THREW SOME THANGS AND IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER.
Maybe I’m the only one but I love that song she did with Akon called
“Like I Never Left”
This song is very powerful and I love the lyrics. I have been a Whitney Houston fan, since day 1. Even when she was going thru it, I was praying and hoping that one day she would grace us with her wonderful voice. This is to those people who claim to have been these great big Whitney Houston Fans “back in the day”. You ARE NOT TRUE FANS! So dont even call yourselves fans. A True Fan will admire you for your strengths and your weakness. God Bless you Whitney!! Cant wait to cop your CD Sept 1, 2009. Love Ya!
Go Whitney!!! It’s not the best song she’s ever sung, but she sounds great. Her voice sounds clear, strong, and as usual her pitch is right on. I am so proud to see her coming back and I will be buying her album UNHEARD just to show my undying support for her.
Ok….I’m glad to see she’s no longer putting her self in DANGER (no drugs, no Bobby, etc). But Dianne Warren is total cheese and this song is NOTHING SPECIAL. Even if it is a demo, how much different is this song really gonna get? I agree with another poster who said she needs to follow the template of MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE, which was (and still is) her best and most current-sounding album….. great vocals, great songs, great moods, and it challenged the public’s perception of her as an artist.
Whitney has been through so much, and to act like she’s a 60-year old woman who’s seen it all and now the past is long gone is false. Everyone can feel how false this song is. She needs to rock out some uptempo/midtempo club and radio bangers about coked-up nights in the club and the man who did her dirty. It would be true. It would be a smash. I’m excited for the Alicia Keys collab but even she borders on cheesy from time to time…..Wyclef, Lauryn Hill, Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliot, Tweet, Ms. Dynamite, Faith Evans, ERYKAH BADU!!!!!!!?????? Why isn’t she collaborating with any other artists who are DEEP IN THE GAME? There better be something that hits harder than this and that other piece of trash with Akon. I miss my girl.
I have to admit this song was quite a bit more pleasant than I would have expected….but…still it’s sad to hear her because she is just not the old Whitney…she sounds good…but she def. is not THE VOICE anymore…sorry.
@Missy…I don’t know how *OLD* u r, but if u have been a singer more 25 yrs, u would know da voice gets worn over da years. I guarantee u will not sound da same in 25 yrs, or be around. Show some respect.
This song is a nice inspirational track. I don’t think it has the bang as a first single she needs since she has been gone for so long, but it’s definitely a decent song. The rude comments about her voice need to cease because I’m sure she sounds better than the overrated singers some of y’all worship. Give this woman a break, she hasn’t even release her album yet and you are already counting her out. It’s also obvious this song wasn’t arranged for vocal acrobatics. I swear this generation of music fans are some of the most pessimistic people. I’m so glad I grew up to great music in the 80s and 90s, where music fans were more open minded and compassionate.
i love whit i amped for her return
like the song
theres nothing to do about her
her voice which im sooooooo dissapointed about i miss n feel in love with the strong higher pitched sweet voice………she still have the same amazing voice but is not the same…………..*TEARS*
It’s a nice cut, but I think she needs to come with some much stronger, the bar has been set. I get the story line, but I am not buy the strength of the voice. I think the song is good and she sings it well.
Whitney I hope there are more songs to select from for the debut single. Please bring it out.

Goodness you guys the woman hasn’t recorded in a really long time! I think people are being hard on her too soon. Give her a chance dang! She will belt out the notes like she used to back in the day once she starts really singing and recording again. Its just step one and day by day that she has taken. I am so glad to hear her voice again. It is still clear and crisp. Great job Whitney love the song!
