I really like Keri and she’s doing well…the industry and public just more readily celebrate lighter skin black female artists, i.e. Teairra, Estelle, Jazmyne S. and others don’t get as much editorial space and exposure…or Halle Berry vs Nia Long…Keri’s performance on the BET Awards Show was indeed weak, but I’ve seen other performances and she was good. She’s a competent vocalist with a range that does exceed Ciara and Rihanna and can do much more than we’ve seen. I wish they all would continue to get vocal coaching, it’ll just make them better! Tthey spend much of their time with the marketing, networking and deal-making aspect of their business. Artists today are pressured to put out a proudct that will sell, not artist development. An artist has to be determined to get better and not believe all the rave reviews or stans who are enamored. They have to want to get better with their craft and not just sell records. The ones who do may not get the just promotion and exposure…i.e. Jazmyne S., Michelle Willaims (tremendous growth and a really good album, Unexpected), Keyshia Cole, continues to get better vocally, still need to work on her styling, continuity…but, she’s happier these days and that says a lot…I was amazed that Ciara did as well as she did on the Awards show…her upper register was pretty good and her bottom register was basically non-existence, now this is something that a good vocal coach could help her mend or make accommodations for the lesser vocal strengths…these artists don’t have anyone demanding that they learn how to properly sing to maximize their vocal ability…Beyonce and Mariah have excellent vocal ability but, for the most part make mediocre music…you know it’s so…in singing talent competitions, how many of their songs do you see people using for auditions?…Mariah and Bee both have a couple, but should have many more given their vocal range and talent, like Whitney Houston or Anita Baker. They’re consumed with the sex pot imagery and making radio hits and video seduction for fans and critics. Neither one of this chart-topping artists have lived up to their potential, so why would we expect artists with less ability to do more? They get a pass because we know these songbirds can truly blow…but, what about the music. As long as we buy it, the record companies and artists will continue to put out what sells and not great music that moves you and compel you to run out and buy it…we’re stuck on numbers, how much an artist has sold, but how moving is the music? This is why you can listen to Michael or Janet Jackson music and just about every song is still a hit, classic timeless music reaching the masses….not just how good they looked…substance or quality over quantity…so don’t hate the artists, truly hate this game, the music industry, a sho nuff pimp industry!

The truth comes out when an artist performs live because they don’t have all the computer programs and “autotune’s ” to help them out. I was a riri fan,until I heard her perform live, have you ever heard her perform live. Its awful. But she sings okay in the studio but at essence last year, it was weak.. very weak. Keri’s performance on Letterman last month was weak too, which surprised me because her album sounded good.

I think you took a long time to make a point that’s not a point. Color had nothing to do with some of her bad performances, I can afford singing lessons, if I wanted them, why can’t she. It’s just excuses.

You forgot to mention the dark skinned Jennifer Hudson she’s come along and won an Oscar and a Grammy, Mary J is doing OK, in the UK at the moment you have a group called the Noisettes being fronted by a dark skinned girl,that are getting a lot of love, I’ll even throw in Fantasia, the difference is confidence and real talent. Beyonce and Halle are successful because they work hard. I agree the music industry has been ridiculous, but I think even they have to learn tough lessons about the talentless crap they’ve aloud and I think we will see some change.

I think Keri Hilson is a really talented songwriter. I also think it’s hard to transition from songwriter to artist. I say Keri’s performance at the BET Awards and I was a bit disappointed. What happened to practicing every move, every step, every flip, jump, etc? I don’t know if it was sound or what (which I doubt) but her vocals sounded shaky and off key. I am not going to “diss” her an artist because that’s not my style but I know the singles she put out did not make me feel confident enough to buy her album.

Anyody remember seeing the movie “The Temptations”? Remember when Barry Gordy asked, “If it was between buying lunch or this album, which would you choose?” Let’s just say I bought lunch with my money!

I was there and NeYo BLEW me away. He can really SING LIVE. Now Keri..she gave a good a pretty entertaining performance (old school medley, men stripping). I can say she’s NOT the best dancer nor singer but give her some time, she’s still a “new” artist. I can say I’ve watched Ciara perform live too and to you stans both of them could use some work live. Keri would be okay if she wouldn’t try to hit notes that are out of her range, and Ciara needs to stop whispering/talking into the mic. And for you IDIOTS wondering why she was wearing some of that stuff, it wasn’t HOT here in Chicago, it actually was cold and rainy for awhile but it warmed up a little. I had on half sleeves and I still needed a jacket. So glad I got to experience this firsthand!
