DAVID GARIBALDI’S MICHAEL JACKSON ‘POP TRILOGY’ TRIBUTE PAINTINGS
Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Visual artist/ performance painter David Garibaldi hit me up earlier this week and shared his new paintings of legendary entertainer Michael Jackson. I was blown away by them and had to show him some love on the blog.
In what he calls the Pop Trilogy, here is what he sent me:
I am a Performance Painter from Sacramento, CA and I read Concrete Loop everyday, and it keeps me up to date on my Urban Pop Culture. It influences my art subjects in a huge way, and just wanted to share with you these paintings I just completed in honor of the king.
Prints aren’t available for purchase, but if you want more info on them check out David’s official site. Peep larger versions below - sooooo dope!

Everybody is trying to capitolize on MJ’s death now, when they spent so much of his life ridiculing him. Like my mother said, they ran him out of America and hounded him everywhere else he went until they ran off of the earth. RIP MJ! They will get theirs.

@15, you took the words right off my keyboard…Everybody’s trying to get their piece now that it’s “cool to like MJ again”, i.e. he ain’t “Wacko” anymore, obviously. People coming out with unreleased MJ mixes out of the blue and ish. Same people that were callin him wacko and weird. Like the family said at the memorial, maybe now they’ll leave him alone, or HEY in this case, maybe they’ll try to draw attention and profit to THEIR SELFISH SELVES through this tragic death. SMH people so fickle and foolish.

@ 32 & 15
Yall making it seem as if David Garibaldi had bad intentions towards Michael Jackson. Not everybody had bad intentions towards him. Plus hes not tryna get money out of doing it…or else he wouldve sold it on the spot.
But I like how artists can create something just like that.

wtf are some people on here talking about?
why is it that every single time someone does something MJ related, he/she must have been one of his haters before his death…smh
not everyone who loves him now hated him before so stop trying act like you’re talking with intelligence…

You people act like MJ never was given a tribute before his death. He was the living legend. After that trial however, he lost a lot of fans in the U.S and respect. However he was given tributes prior to that. He won the AMA award of Merit in 84, won the MTV legend award in 1990. He won the Grammy Legend award in 1992. He was given the Artist of the Millennium in 2000. He had his 30th anniversary in 2001 and many more that I don’t feel like naming. He was imitated by Justin Timberlake, Usher, Chris Brown, Omarion, Ciara….the list goes on. In the early 00s Vh1 created the MJ best video moments they used to have the MJ marathon where they show his Dangerous concerts, i remember because I used to watch it. In the 90s they had MJ marathons on MTV. He made some poor decisions by letting that little boy in his house!! After he had kids that should have been the end of it. I’m sure this person is not trying to profit from his death, yall just act like he was never appreciated. I appreciated him, what about you?

Nice. But honestly I don’t like them. I mean they are beautiful to look at but the young one looks the least like him unless you are not paying attention to detail. The middle one is nice, but it looks like a woman and the last one his nose is…..?
Only thing I like about the paintings is that MJ is colorless because I don’t like seeing the collages of a black boy turned white man. I don’t care if you hate what I say, thats what I feel, it looks funny.

I DON’T KNOW IF IT REALLY DOES MICHAEL JUSTICE. I KNOW THEY SAY A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS OR WHATEVER, BUT TO ME IT JUST LOOKS LIKE A BUST OF A PERSON AND DOESN’T INCLUDE MIKE’S SOUL WHICH WAS HUGELY MADE UP OF HIS DANCING

@49 you’re right. I always loved MJ and i never really “dogged” him per se. Maybe there were times when i disagreed with what he did, ie, the allegations and the baby dangling and whatnot, but plenty of people still loved him and respected him while he was alive. I do know that many people who never really liked the older MJ are now paying tribute, and i find that fake, but at the same time it’s like they are now realizing what a true genius this man was. I heard a quote online somewhere “Dont wait until someone is dead to give them flowers” These pictures are amazing and im glad David G is paying tribute.
